Re: I guess it IS rocket science

I see lots of interesting possibilities, too. Dangling skycrane cables awfully close to hot rocket exhaust. A martian wind gust or hasty computer maneuver and the rover falls.

Their mixed use of units in the skycrane video also seems a bit suspicious. 20m above ground, the skycrane deploys a 6ft long cable. Or was it 20ft long, 6m above?

Re: Warm wet places...

Now that you say it... our Sharp VHS recorder had a visual indicator (LED) observeable from the outside that would light if excessive moisture was detected inside. With a sturdy belt and large battery pack, it was also a mobile device. The innovation clearly lies in the irreverseable chemical reaction.

Cheesy

These pointless glass effects have looked cheesy even when they were introduced.

And they where completely non-functional: Because the main part of a window needs to be easily readable, they only made the outside border transparent, while the rest of the window stayed opaque. That looked idiotic. And even on the outside border, this caused problems, e.g. for the window title. So they had to add drop-shadows to the text of the title bar, etc.pp. Jut a bad idea that they tried desperately to fix, but it did not work because it was a bad idea right from the start.

Of course power users used the "classic mode" on Win7 because of this. I am glad that MS understands this and will fix it.

Google+ not a success?

I'm so sick of every media outlet repeating the endless drone of "Google+ is a ghost town!" With over 100 Million users currently, and analytics predicting growth as high as an additional 300 Million users by 2013, making statements about how G+ hasn't been a success is just irresponsible at this point. I check my feed three to four times a day, and have new posts every time. And I don't have to deal with the bugs, unnecessary clutter, endless stream of ads, or seeming hatred for privacy that Facebook harbors anymore.

Screenshot proves nothing

I have a Windows 7 machine and a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. They both have that file shown in the search, so the screenshot proves nothing.

Additionally, it'd be harder to reskin the OS than to just launch new instances with the correct OS.

Re: edgy

On SLED the default file system is still ext3, I've not checked SLES yet. Their promotion of btrfs puzzles me a bit, I have the same doubts you cite. Also my experience of running virtual machines with btrfs just to see what happens shows it being prone to declaring there's no disk space left even when there's actually loads.

Re: Why is this jsut a service pack?

There is a lot that hasn't changed. E.g. they've stuck with GNOME 2.28 and KDE 4.3. Firefox and Libreoffice are the same versions as in SP1. I think there's actually fewer changes in versions of things between SP1 and SP2 than there were between the original release and SP1, despite SP2 taking nearly twice as long to appear.

Not interested because

I've had the electronics on USB sticks fail. At which time the soldered on memory chip/s become inaccessible. At those capacities the drives would be used by many as a backup device. A far better solution would be a USB thumb drive adapter with replaceable SD cards of that higher capacity..

Did you notice where it was stated that Eben Upton works for Broadcom who make the chip the Raspberry Pi is based on? Might be a clue there as to how the project manages to get favourable pricing on the components.

The pricing does seem almost too good to be true but if you read up on the project the people behind it really do seem to know what they're doing. They're also financing it themselves. Putting their money where their mouths are, as it were.

Money is an exhaustible resource

If they want to do a worthwhile study, find out how much copyright infringers pay for media, etc. compared to their snow white compatriots.

I'd bet that the total spent is similar or more for those that annoy big media. Rather than taking and spending nothing, these people are simply enforcing an 'all you can eat' model onto an industry that habitually overvalues its product.

People can't spend more than they have, and one way or another they tend to spend it in the end.

Better for government to do something to break down the parasites in big media and ensure that the producers get more of the bottom line. Frankly, in a download world, there is no excuse for the creators cut to be less than 50%. Put that into a law and I'll believe you have the interests of promoting new production at heart.
