people happily using Yahoo, getting decent result for searches , will now start getting rubbish served by by Bing and get frustrated and annoyed and try google instead to find what they are looking for.
After about 4-5 times of this happening , they will switch full time to Google.
Yahoo, you have just handed your client base to Google.
Bing will end up with the remainder of people who dont know how to change their search engine and what value are they to them? They are usually the people who type the full URL into the search engine box instead of the address bar.
Go Ballmer !!!
@Aaron 10, good post.
now some answers...
"Apple products use the same componants as PCs you idjut, just in shiny wrappers."
ferraris are fancy Fiats. and they do lack things found in other cars. You think the metal or fibre glass in a ferrari is somehow "better" metal etc. than in a ford?
"Good analogy, assuming the Ferrari only runs on Ferrari-sanctioned roads, and can only use petrol dispensed from Ferrari-sanctioned garages, and lacks basic features like seats, steering wheel and an engine. Shyah."
Just tried to put the dashboard from a ferrari into a mini. didnt work. bloody ferrari !!! ripping people off as always.
Are you suggesting I can put a HP motherboard in my dell laptop?? last time i check you could replace parts like HD' s etc in a mac and you can run os x , windows , linux on it. Maybe you are saying that linux is bad because it also doesnt natively run win apps?
Good job personal preference and freedom of choice exists. Option are not 'bad' just because they are not your options...
Its strange how 99% of people who use macs think they are worth the money, but 99% of people who use PC's think they are too expensive but are unwilling to accept others opinions. Open your minds
Do ye muppets spend your days over on the Ferrari forums complaining about how much more expensive they are and that only FerrariTurd Fanbois would pay the price for it and how Ferrari rip people off because you can buy a Toyota for a quarter of the price.
Sarah, if its causing you such bother, I have to ask :
Why do the Reg provide and icon for "wheres the IT angle?"
Surely self defeating in trying to get the message out that ye run non-IT stories?
You seem angry today... need a hug?
hot hot hot
Firstly, i am an iphone owner, 3g.
No phone should get that hot from just being left under the pillow. Phone would be on standby so whats causing the heat. No mention in the article that he had left it playing music and even at that, there is no way it should get that hot. No matter what way you look at it.
its a flaw, simple.
That said, its probably not a flaw in Every iPhone, most likely confined to a limited number.
Also, has anybody noticed the volume of the speaker drop dramatically after upgrading to 3.0? Mine has gone down a good bit and yes, i have checked everything. Even uploaded a new plist file to increase it but didnt make much difference.
"originally identified on the iPhone 2G "
the 24kpwn was originally identified in the Touch 2g
"The iPhone Dev Team hasn’t said how long it’ll take to update ultrasn0w"
They dont need to it works the same , they have to update redsn0w, the jailbreak app.
come on.. its not that hard to get right...... i know its friday and all, but the pub can wait 5 more minutes
Why its faster to get to Glasgow in a car rather than a bicycle.
Also in this article we compare a Honda 50 to a BMW M5. The Honda doesnt seem to be able to keep up with the BMW, although it is cheaper to run. Even though the BMW is 5 years OLDER !!!!!
Make sure you read it.. you'll be amazed at the results !!
Holy God Miley !
of course there is an IT angle, they referenced the other sensitive data that has been lost on CD's etc in the same way that this was lost. An obvious link.
Also, the instructions were on an A4 paper, no co-incidence that A4 is the same paper size you will find in most printers in a typical IT office.
1. @a/c Cash strapped Apple are not.. $29 billion in cash reserves.
2. 22 emails in 2 days is stupid. I run a support department and the biggest problem we have is clients who do that to us when we are trying to sort a problem. All it does is delay our efforts to get the issue sorted as resources have to be allocated to dealing with answering the same question 5 times an hour to the same person.
3. Yes it is totally crap of Apple to not be able to sort this within a week maximum.
Its all true.
i actually know the employee in question. He is living in my house at the moment.
I was contracted last year to install BeOS onto those servers in China
And while talking on Skype this morning on my iPhone, when i said 'hammer' it suddenly launched 'Days of Thunder' (an american racing program BTW)
you may laugh now, but just wait....
do ye all think that apple's dev road map for any device is just thought up the week before?
i'd lay a safe bet that v1 , v2 and v3 were largely planned before the 1st gen iphone even hit the streets.
kinda like the way, say , EVERY large company operates... mad that , isn't it???
cool, its snowing outside....
oh shut the fuck up
bunch of fucking whiney twats the lot of you.
Its not like loads of companies wont make 3rd party headphones with the controls.
Anyway, if you do want to use "brilliant" more expensive 3rd party ear-buds, why the fuck are you buying a £50 player.
Fucking Toyota with their stupid Yaris, I cant fit my 28inch Alloys on it. It'll never sell.
Or maybe Apple just have no clue what they doing and havent produced any item that sells millions of, and dont actually have 30 billion in cash reserves.
'Cause everyone else who posted above me has done sooo much better and are all kings of their own international Empire.
must go shoot a fawn or something.....
consumer vs "real"
why do people keep referring to the "consumer" market as though its totally mutually exclusive?
When it comes to a desktop or even to some degree , transport then there is a divide. I could want one pc at work and one for a family at home. i could need a van for work and a mpv for home. grand.
But a phone is something that you use all day, working or socialising. how many people change sims to a different phone when they leave work? practically zero. So for this device there is a clear cross over. So my phone has to be able to do both and nowadays with people being so stupidly image conscious, the phone has to have street cred in the pub/dinner etc. cant impress a bird with how easy your phone connects to a VPN, but show something like an iPhone ....
what was my point??
its technology could be used for illegal purposes????
ok, prosecute Dell/Apple/Compaq computers because i can rip a CD on to it and copy it... illegal.
After that prosecute BMW etc because its technology allows me to speed... illegal
Prosecute Colt because its gun technology allows me to kill .. illegal
and once again they fail to see that stopping the most popular just means that another most popular will soon appear... ala Napster (remember them????)
anyway , time to eat a kitten
1 wall of xbox's, 1 shelf of Zunes (covered in dust) and the rest of the store filled with Microsoft Mice.
Seriously, what PC manufacturer will be selected? They risk ticking off all the others, no?
This is going to get very interesting... another way for MS to burn more cash and have another loss-leader.
advice on update
After I updated a few apps were behaving badly, specifically Mail which would crash if you viewed a mail with an attachment or tried to send one with an attachment.
After a bit of digging, i accidently stumbled on the problem.
About a month ago I purchased a new MBP 17" and had copied the contents of my old machine to a Subfolder on the new one and then Started moving apps, prefs, data into the relevant locations manually. Now, i know i could use Migration Assistant but i'm old-skool and like to use the opportunity to remove things i dont use etc.
I then keep this Old-Drive folder for a few months in case there is a pref/framework file i need that i didnt copy.
Turns out that the 10.5.6 Update upgraded all the Apps in the Applications folder of the OldDrive instead of my main folder :
ie : all os x apps in /OldDrive/Aplications for updated instead of /Applications
So the version of mail i was using after the update was for 10.5.5 hence the crash.
Removed the rogue Apps folder, re-applied the updated and bingo... perfect machine again..
Might help soneone someday out there...
@ AC with 2 arguments
your post confused me as a cant make out if you were agreeing or not, but anyway :
Re point 1. I wasnt relating fewer production lines to getting the product right. I was only pointing out that fewer lines can be better. You still have to go through the same process of getting the product right no matter how many lines you have.
Re point 2. you are mixing producing hardware that runs any os, with open source software. Not sure how you made that leap. And who said they have to give their software back? their choice. My original point that its not closed hardware stands. You can run any os on it that you are allowed.
@Kiminao : many thanks!! but maybe it was me stalking webster for the last few months.. ;-)
RE:I know trolls shouldn't be fed but...
lets see how all the config options offered by Sony etc pan out over the next year or so, shall we.
Already the phone makers have realised that they have too many offerings making the choice confusing, in light of Apples single offering.
Same will apply to PC's in the current economy... the logistics of all the offerings and the stock costs and multiple production line configs etc become a noose around your neck.
and relating to OSx on non-macs, even though i would love to see it, i fully understand Apples stance.its their product, they decide where to sell it and on what device.. their decision. I'd prob do the same in their position... profitable company with big cash pile.. seems to be working. And yes, i am capitalist, not a tree hugging hippy. ;-)
anyway, my original point was that you can run everything on a mac that you can on a pc, so the Mac is not a closed hardware...
lets face it... bmw's, ferraris, audis cost more than skodas, fords, volkswagens. People pay for brand, image and also (percieved) quality. Apple take advantage of that. fair play to them.
am i missing something in these comments or something?
Closed hardware etc??? but you can run os x , windows and linux on macs too? same as pc's except the are not allowed to run os x.
so the consumer has the choice to do all they can on a mac that they can do on a pc?? and i wrong here?
or maybe you referred to the config options when you buy? well to-date 99% of all people i know with laptops have ever only updated the ram, sometimes the HD, but mainly dont touch it.
" a closed monopoly (in the hardware provision)" -- dont ALL manufacturers have a monopoly over how they produce their own hardware? I cant order a Sony laptop and tell them to put in a PPC chipset.
anyway, fuck Apple for releasing a Firmware update, the bastards. They should have not bothered and let us the way we were. We'd all be happier.
All of us here on the forum have SO much experience in running a large Multinational and we all know that its possible to release every product with 100% perfection. Its easy to predict and test all possible combinations of what each user will do with a laptop. OR... maybe we are all muppet employees at a desk job without the balls to go out and take a risk and try it ourselves...
hmmm, thank god its friday, i think the pills are wearing off.
green my hole
if all car in the planet were powered by leccy, has anyone calculated the impact on the environment it would have to produce all that leccy to constantly recharge all those cars every 100 Km? its a well known fact that electricity is the most in-efficient means to power transport.
So, the main possible source of leccy will end up being nuclear power (as stated in an earlier post)???
so, take the next leap of faith... nuc power stations have become taboo and un popular, a puplic menace, a safety threat.
Whats the bets that the people behind the FUD of Climate Change ( note, its no longer Global Warming, because Climate Change can be true whether it gets cooler or warmer..handy that!!!) are the same people with a financial interest in nuc power... plays into their hands nicely....
bugger, lets go mental and thing about the possibility that if everyone cycled instead of driving then the extra CO2 we would exert from physical activity might be worse than the cars???
or maybe i am just an idiot....
oh, and read this
the intelligent among you will know what it means... ;-)
this year , i will be mostly driving a V12.
great tactic at the start of a global economic downturn. Now this make Apple look like Samaritan. I seriously hope i meet someone with one of these one day.
So another company realises that apple may be a threat and decides to kind-of adopt their thinking.
Bets SE, then nokia, then motorla will soon all start telling the world and dog about how they have JUST figured out that people dont want all the range and that, anyway, its the software features that make the products different. And the world will be in awe at their wisdom... !
The dog will just shrug and kick a chair around..
this could stay buried in my case or back of the car, and if i need to do something that benefits larger screen, like techsupport on VNC or ssh or even just spend an hour doing emails, then I have the option, without having to worry about syncing 2 devices for documents/contacts/apps/bookmarks etc.
People touted the idea of Home folder on an iPod before and this is kinda it, only using processor/modem too.
Forget having OSX screenshot. Just dock the phone and have its display come up full screen.
Wonder when we will see openoffice or neooffice ported for iphone?
and iphone haters... if they are so bad, what are ALL phone manufacturers starting to make similar offerings? eventually most phones will go this way.
Remember the little touch pads they had in Star Trek TNG? and they were in the FUTURE!! ;-)
if the bbc are so concerned about the people who need aid, why dont they give some
of that £111m profit to homeless/less well off . Could start in Britian even and move on from there.
Then they can throw stones.
The same circle since the VAX (and before?)
1. Central Mainframe to run all your apps from (now the Cloud (and i hate that term!))
2. People prefer local computing power, and control over docs and ability to work offline.
3. Build apps to run locally.
4. Start trying to convince people its better to run apps from hosted server.
5. GOTO 1
so, lets look at this case, people have office apps locally, check. Google builds online alternative, check. Google then develop offline version to suit most users needs/wishes, check.
Now, whos turn is it next to start all over again.
Hey, i have a great idea, TV Set-top Internet boxes... i am sure that could work..
my 4 legged friend
"the most overpriced phone ever made" i can buy it for eur49. what's overpriced?
i can think many more phones that are more expensive
"A) If there dumb" its THEY'RE. now who's dumb! your grammar is like a 419er.
My question: someone orders something illegal and then reports it to the cops when it doesnt show up... arrest them. Hey Police, i ordered 1000 copied DVD's and got stung. help me. oh and the drugs never arrived neither!!
i got a turbosim for my v1 iphone way back when there was no unlock for OTB1.1.2. Worked perfect with no bad effects until the software unlock came out and i used that instead.
had 2 friends do the same and no probs there either.
Still have the turbo sim so must try it out in a 3g phone soon and see how it goes.
When the software unlock comes out, Apple have only created a massive target for thieves. The only way to get a 3g iphone without contract will be if its stolen and unlocked. muppets.
Anyway, i am happy with my v1 and all its apps. still does what i want.
My next purchase will be a cheap brand phone that has 3g and wifi so i can setup a mobile hotspot for myself and then go wifi from the iphone to the shared 3g. Bingo. All my devices on wifi/3g and a backup phone too !!!
but i digress...
surely it would be possible for the maker of any kit involved to access the device, read the config in NVRAM and write it out to a file and reset the password?
i am over-simplifying something i dont understand?
Now , if its was OS X, you could simply boot from the CD and use the 'Reset Password' Utility....
8mp .. pointless
once you go over 5 mp, its useless as most of the picture is filled with noise. the sensor is just not good enough. you have to have an SLR.
agree with derbheld... better to fix speed.
<flame> but... its still no iphone... ;-) !!! </flame>
brave sir robin, bravely ran away away
> i never did !!
well, for once the comments on a story provide ample entertainment for an afternoon! Shows how serious we consider the Blackberrys???
Must be something in the water today... pity its not friday
i'm off to get cracking on the gardening for phil
Re: I wish
"I wish you were dead,
I wish you were.
When all I have is you,
Inside my head,
You're in my head,
And it would be much easier if you were dead,
I wish you were dead,
I wish you were.
I'll forget that I ever let you in,
And I'll pretend that,this isn't happening"
"It was not crap technology. I strongly suspect you have no idea what technology has even changed.
Let me guess - you're extrapolating backwards by comparing your iPod to a walkman. M I RITE?"
OK, let me clarify in as fisher price language as i can.
The technology/knowledge they had back then was very limited and in comparative/relative terms to what they have today its would appear basic.
The advances in computing power, metallic compounds, power usage, safety systems, build & design technology in the past 40 years are not to be ignored.
so, seeing as i dont have a degree in padding the crap out of a sentence i call it 'crap'. Maybe its my upbringing.. blame the parents.
i'm sure it was cutting edge back then but the point of my post was :
Do it again with what they had.. hell, even do it with what they have now-a-days.
I personally dont think they can/will. Man was never on the moon
and dont ever diss my walkman again... it has a play AND fastforward button AND i can change the batteries when i want. ;-p
cant go back to where you never were.
IF (really big IF) the US did get to the moon back in the 60's with that crap technology, repeat it today with the same kit. Same rockets, same moon buggy, same lunar module, same cameras etc.
I will allow some modifications for safety, but essentially the same stuff.
Watch it all disintegrate as it hits the stratosphere.
Going back in 2020 !!... ha, apparently they could do it back then, but need another 12 years to figure it all out again. Crap.
now, on more serious matters... wonder who will be the first couple to 'christen' the moon ;-)
and one wonders...
why linux isnt taken seriously enough to be a threat to Windows/OS X
When the rest of the business world they run the opposite direction with thoughts like ::
"If i trust the operation of my business to linux, and this little upstart has another hissy fit at some stage and does something because he 'wants to' (foot stamping) then will i be left f$%ked"
Real professional Linus.. real good. You showed them. Sink below everyone first. Winner!!!!
@ everyone above except Kenny
Am i the only one who saw the flames beside his post and took it for the tongue in cheek it seems to meant to be... an obvious attempt to start a flame war, usually meaning that the author is really saying it in jest.
The rest of ye need to get a sense of humour if you ask me... talk about over-reacting.!! sure lets stone him altogether.
I dont believe in Jebus...
@Justin... so much for posting anon!! lol
@ the story, sounds like the guy has ADD or is just an ASS.
ringing after 6 and expects it to be sorted. Whats the bets that if his boss rang him
at 8 pm telling there was a problem in the office he would tell him where to go.
as put in other comments :
The Uni made it available for Free. If they thought it was worth money, then charge for the info from day 1. If you are dumb enough the give it away for free after spending 35k on making it then tough.
And where did they get their info day 1 to compile the list... prob by looking up other sources??
And why did it cost 35k? i am sure i could compile a quality list in a month or 2 max.
Maybe the Uni should be taken to task for mis-use of funds!!!!
imagine the converstaion
" Hi, i am a *professional* (lol) hitman that has been hired to kill you. I work in privacy and am totally anonymous. You wont even see me coming.
But, today, I am offering you this one time opportunity to cancel the hit for a mere £100,000. Pay by Friday and receive a Free iPhone.
Let me give you my contact details... oh wait...damn, did my number show up when i rang you... bugger... <click>... "
almost worthy of the BOFH
I remember a guy contacting my to come install WfW 3.11 on all his machines and setup file sharing etc.
I arrived on site and he proudly told me all the cabling was in ,I just had to connect, install and configure.
When i started looking he had daisy chained cat 5 cabling between each machine
and had left it like that, as he didnt know how to wire the RJ45 connector to loop on and thought I could do it properly.
I had to stop myself from rolling around laughing and nearly choked, before explaining to him what a hub was etc.
At that point the project cost got too high for him and he stuck to floppies.
oh, the memories of more innocent days.... !!
>"The BEST you can do is a personal attack?"
this from the man who resorts to calling people sheeple and Losers! lol
ok... now for the debate:
Apple are are 4th over all, slightly behind Acer. Quite good for for a company with a proprietary OS. The have full control over their own hardware and OS, not dependant on M$. This is especially important now with the lacklustre performance of Vista. Other Hardware manufacturers are seeing low sales because of the failure of a major supplier. Terrible position to be. Simple economics for any business.
Despite only being in the mobile market (OS and Hardware) for only one year, having only one model and it only being 2G, Apple have got 3rd position and climbing fast. Not bad.
If the ipod is a ripoff of the Rio, how come the Rio didnt get 80-90% market share? Possible answer.. its not as good?
OSX a rip of off windows/unix??? please. come on. If you are going to debate, please do it properly. Dont show your foolishness. I will give you the benefit of the doubt on this on that you meant a different point.
Doing a product in a different way is not a ripoff. Doing the SAME is a ripoff.By your reasoning, at this stage you could class ALL products as a rip off. thats just stupid. Ferrari ripped of Ford??
Lastly, Apple have , what, 20billion in cash reserves?? What a failure!! If you have done better, then you are qualified to shoot them down.
ah, but sure, you are gas anyway. always good for a laugh.
"everytime a new crApple product comes out to replace the previous one released just months previous."
yeah, the iphone only came out 12 months ago... wait.. thats actually called a Year on some planets!!
and apple are the only one who bring out new products every few months... no-one else does.. they have the decency to leave it at least a year or 2 (or 6 of you buy microsoft ! lol)
Its called 'progress' you muppet, move out of the stone age. Things move at a different pace now. If you cant keep up, then leave the stage.
numbers made the excel way
"XP was windows NT 5.1 (as it was what 2k should of been) and server 2003 is NT 5.2. Vista is NT6. They're all NT product numbers really and don't really factor in the 9x line."
Yeah, just like 20 comes after 12 if you dont factor in the all the teens !!!
ok... trying to figure it out
windows 95 = 4
windows 98 = 4.5 (?maybe)
Windows 2000 = 5
Windows ME = 5.5 -ish
Windows XP = 6
Windows Vista = 7
Windows 7 = ?? Vista reboxed?
I remember when I first booted Win2k and the message on screen said "Built on NT Technology". laughed myself silly. 'Drive our new car, its built on the chasis of one 5 years ago'
Why the hell are they admitting Win7 is built on Vista? If I was the PR guy, i would be putting as much distance between 7 and Vista as possible. Lie for gods sake if needs be.
