constant fools
The same circle since the VAX (and before?)
1. Central Mainframe to run all your apps from (now the Cloud (and i hate that term!))
2. People prefer local computing power, and control over docs and ability to work offline.
3. Build apps to run locally.
4. Start trying to convince people its better to run apps from hosted server.
5. GOTO 1
so, lets look at this case, people have office apps locally, check. Google builds online alternative, check. Google then develop offline version to suit most users needs/wishes, check.
Now, whos turn is it next to start all over again.
Hey, i have a great idea, TV Set-top Internet boxes... i am sure that could work..
insane
voip apps have been available for many makes of phones for ages.
How can they say its illegal on just one particular handset?
idiotic!
my 4 legged friend
@luke wells
"the most overpriced phone ever made" i can buy it for eur49. what's overpriced?
i can think many more phones that are more expensive
@Scott
"A) If there dumb" its THEY'RE. now who's dumb! your grammar is like a 419er.
My question: someone orders something illegal and then reports it to the cops when it doesnt show up... arrest them. Hey Police, i ordered 1000 copied DVD's and got stung. help me. oh and the drugs never arrived neither!!
turbosim
i got a turbosim for my v1 iphone way back when there was no unlock for OTB1.1.2. Worked perfect with no bad effects until the software unlock came out and i used that instead.
had 2 friends do the same and no probs there either.
Still have the turbo sim so must try it out in a 3g phone soon and see how it goes.
When the software unlock comes out, Apple have only created a massive target for thieves. The only way to get a 3g iphone without contract will be if its stolen and unlocked. muppets.
Anyway, i am happy with my v1 and all its apps. still does what i want.
My next purchase will be a cheap brand phone that has 3g and wifi so i can setup a mobile hotspot for myself and then go wifi from the iphone to the shared 3g. Bingo. All my devices on wifi/3g and a backup phone too !!!
but i digress...
solution?
surely it would be possible for the maker of any kit involved to access the device, read the config in NVRAM and write it out to a file and reset the password?
i am over-simplifying something i dont understand?
Now , if its was OS X, you could simply boot from the CD and use the 'Reset Password' Utility....
8mp .. pointless
once you go over 5 mp, its useless as most of the picture is filled with noise. the sensor is just not good enough. you have to have an SLR.
agree with derbheld... better to fix speed.
<flame> but... its still no iphone... ;-) !!! </flame>
brave sir robin, bravely ran away away
> i never did !!
well, for once the comments on a story provide ample entertainment for an afternoon! Shows how serious we consider the Blackberrys???
Must be something in the water today... pity its not friday
i'm off to get cracking on the gardening for phil
@phil hare
please... stop saying 'it'.... oh damn, now i've done it !!!
oh, i've said it again........

Re: I wish
"I wish you were dead,
I wish you were.
When all I have is you,
Inside my head,
You're in my head,
And it would be much easier if you were dead,
I wish you were dead,
I wish you were.
I'll forget that I ever let you in,
And I'll pretend that,this isn't happening"
@joe cooper
"It was not crap technology. I strongly suspect you have no idea what technology has even changed.
Let me guess - you're extrapolating backwards by comparing your iPod to a walkman. M I RITE?"
OK, let me clarify in as fisher price language as i can.
The technology/knowledge they had back then was very limited and in comparative/relative terms to what they have today its would appear basic.
The advances in computing power, metallic compounds, power usage, safety systems, build & design technology in the past 40 years are not to be ignored.
so, seeing as i dont have a degree in padding the crap out of a sentence i call it 'crap'. Maybe its my upbringing.. blame the parents.
i'm sure it was cutting edge back then but the point of my post was :
Do it again with what they had.. hell, even do it with what they have now-a-days.
I personally dont think they can/will. Man was never on the moon
and dont ever diss my walkman again... it has a play AND fastforward button AND i can change the batteries when i want. ;-p
go back???
cant go back to where you never were.
My Demand:
IF (really big IF) the US did get to the moon back in the 60's with that crap technology, repeat it today with the same kit. Same rockets, same moon buggy, same lunar module, same cameras etc.
I will allow some modifications for safety, but essentially the same stuff.
Watch it all disintegrate as it hits the stratosphere.
Going back in 2020 !!... ha, apparently they could do it back then, but need another 12 years to figure it all out again. Crap.
now, on more serious matters... wonder who will be the first couple to 'christen' the moon ;-)
and one wonders...
why linux isnt taken seriously enough to be a threat to Windows/OS X
When the rest of the business world they run the opposite direction with thoughts like ::
"If i trust the operation of my business to linux, and this little upstart has another hissy fit at some stage and does something because he 'wants to' (foot stamping) then will i be left f$%ked"
Real professional Linus.. real good. You showed them. Sink below everyone first. Winner!!!!
@ everyone above except Kenny
Am i the only one who saw the flames beside his post and took it for the tongue in cheek it seems to meant to be... an obvious attempt to start a flame war, usually meaning that the author is really saying it in jest.
The rest of ye need to get a sense of humour if you ask me... talk about over-reacting.!! sure lets stone him altogether.
I dont believe in Jebus...
what fridge?
@Justin... so much for posting anon!! lol
@ the story, sounds like the guy has ADD or is just an ASS.
ringing after 6 and expects it to be sorted. Whats the bets that if his boss rang him
at 8 pm telling there was a problem in the office he would tell him where to go.
twit
simple
as put in other comments :
The Uni made it available for Free. If they thought it was worth money, then charge for the info from day 1. If you are dumb enough the give it away for free after spending 35k on making it then tough.
And where did they get their info day 1 to compile the list... prob by looking up other sources??
And why did it cost 35k? i am sure i could compile a quality list in a month or 2 max.
Maybe the Uni should be taken to task for mis-use of funds!!!!
imagine the converstaion
" Hi, i am a *professional* (lol) hitman that has been hired to kill you. I work in privacy and am totally anonymous. You wont even see me coming.
But, today, I am offering you this one time opportunity to cancel the hit for a mere £100,000. Pay by Friday and receive a Free iPhone.
Let me give you my contact details... oh wait...damn, did my number show up when i rang you... bugger... <click>... "
almost worthy of the BOFH
classic tale
I remember a guy contacting my to come install WfW 3.11 on all his machines and setup file sharing etc.
I arrived on site and he proudly told me all the cabling was in ,I just had to connect, install and configure.
When i started looking he had daisy chained cat 5 cabling between each machine
and had left it like that, as he didnt know how to wire the RJ45 connector to loop on and thought I could do it properly.
I had to stop myself from rolling around laughing and nearly choked, before explaining to him what a hub was etc.
At that point the project cost got too high for him and he stuck to floppies.
oh, the memories of more innocent days.... !!
facts????
>"The BEST you can do is a personal attack?"
this from the man who resorts to calling people sheeple and Losers! lol
ok... now for the debate:
Apple are are 4th over all, slightly behind Acer. Quite good for for a company with a proprietary OS. The have full control over their own hardware and OS, not dependant on M$. This is especially important now with the lacklustre performance of Vista. Other Hardware manufacturers are seeing low sales because of the failure of a major supplier. Terrible position to be. Simple economics for any business.
Despite only being in the mobile market (OS and Hardware) for only one year, having only one model and it only being 2G, Apple have got 3rd position and climbing fast. Not bad.
If the ipod is a ripoff of the Rio, how come the Rio didnt get 80-90% market share? Possible answer.. its not as good?
OSX a rip of off windows/unix??? please. come on. If you are going to debate, please do it properly. Dont show your foolishness. I will give you the benefit of the doubt on this on that you meant a different point.
Doing a product in a different way is not a ripoff. Doing the SAME is a ripoff.By your reasoning, at this stage you could class ALL products as a rip off. thats just stupid. Ferrari ripped of Ford??
Lastly, Apple have , what, 20billion in cash reserves?? What a failure!! If you have done better, then you are qualified to shoot them down.
ah, but sure, you are gas anyway. always good for a laugh.
cheers
webster sqeaky
"everytime a new crApple product comes out to replace the previous one released just months previous."
yeah, the iphone only came out 12 months ago... wait.. thats actually called a Year on some planets!!
and apple are the only one who bring out new products every few months... no-one else does.. they have the decency to leave it at least a year or 2 (or 6 of you buy microsoft ! lol)
Its called 'progress' you muppet, move out of the stone age. Things move at a different pace now. If you cant keep up, then leave the stage.
planet of the...
You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!
numbers made the excel way
"XP was windows NT 5.1 (as it was what 2k should of been) and server 2003 is NT 5.2. Vista is NT6. They're all NT product numbers really and don't really factor in the 9x line."
Yeah, just like 20 comes after 12 if you dont factor in the all the teens !!!
windows 7???
ok... trying to figure it out
windows 3.1
windows 95 = 4
windows 98 = 4.5 (?maybe)
Windows 2000 = 5
Windows ME = 5.5 -ish
Windows XP = 6
Windows Vista = 7
Windows 7 = ?? Vista reboxed?
I remember when I first booted Win2k and the message on screen said "Built on NT Technology". laughed myself silly. 'Drive our new car, its built on the chasis of one 5 years ago'
Why the hell are they admitting Win7 is built on Vista? If I was the PR guy, i would be putting as much distance between 7 and Vista as possible. Lie for gods sake if needs be.
wrong claim
it might be the longest journey for a GPS unit, but the briefcase didnt "draw" anything as it went on its merry way.
The drawing was still only on the piece of paper he plotted it on.
@everyone
greylisting.... simple.
@ all new nochex clients
You still dont get it do you?
Lets say that next week NoChex decide to do an upgrade and it all goes wrong.
What then? It _could_ happen.
You have just seen how easy it was to switch. Why didnt everyone who is complaining setup a nochex account months ago and have, at the very LEAST, 2 sets of html/php/asp pages, so you can put your nochex in when you want, and your hsbc (or other) when you want. Its that easy guys!!.
I just hope you all kept your HSBC account active and a copy of the integration.
That means you NOW have a backup for the future. Pat yourself on the back.
hope NoChex doesnt buckle under the new load !! ;-p
killer
its so funny to see a company that has been around for years in the mobile business trying to tout their latest one as the iphone killer... a device that hasnt even been around for 1 year and is the first offering from apple.
Conceding defeat from the start, no?
surely they could have spun it better?
2 failures
while its not acceptable for HSBC to be down like this and not keep clients updated, there is also a finger to be pointed at clients who rely on this exclusively and dont have any alternative.
If something is _SO_ crucial to your business, why no backup option?
I can never understand this.
Anything to do with computers can and will go wrong eventually. Fact of life.
If you could potentially lose thousands at any outage, then its your responsibility to have backup plans. No excuses. Even if its just paypal. anything.
Paris knows alot about titsup, i'll bet
what fridge?
has anyone checked if it has been submitted to the FCC for approval? surely it needs to go through that first or has that been forgotten?
They might announce it in June, but same as last year, it would not release for a few months after that.
Am i way off here?
Edge is too slow really.
I am now , for the first time ever, able to go home/holidays without my laptop and still do all the sys admin i ever need to do on the iphone, and all the entertainment i want, but 3g would be nice. Usable , but not comfortable at present.
Usability wise , it is streets ahead. Tech wise, a mediocre first offering. Now that it has proven a success, i think Apple will quickly race past the competition on that front.
and to anybody who complains that texting or anything doesnt do it like the nokia/ other phones. Hug yourself, back in to the corner and repeat "Change is bad".
@Sam Liddicott
"Am I wildly speculating when I suppose that no-one who has responded has any experience with being dead?"
i was dead once but i got better.
boo !
Re:Full circle
yep, only the circle has gone around a few times at this stage... remember the VAX / MainFrame.
Every few years, the whole idea of all stuff on the server is banded about under a new guise.
When do they ever learn that most (not all!) people want their stuff on their machine for a multiple of reasons. Security, accessibility etc.
Why build an online app only to make it an off-line/online app? Just put a plugin into MS or Open Office that syncs online. A Google version of .Mac as such.
Whats the next re-hash? Set-top boxes are the only thing a household will have?? Music rental will be the only way?? ha
the heart because of its irrelevance... ;-)
thank god
as a long time mac user (and other Os's daily), i am glad this has finally happened and levelled the playing field.
Now people might wake up to the fact that all OS's have security holes.
The only thing all computers have in common is the dumbo at the keyboard, effectively, the 'nut holding the wheel'
Apple needed this wake up call.
And users need to be educated more then ever.
I got a call the other day from a client telling me that a virus got past my filtering and going mad. Turns out an email with a link came in and someone click the 'Free Porn' link. I am still amazed that this happens. surely all employees are told first day : "DONT DO THIS."??
oh, and windows users suck !!! LOL
VSS
VSS, what? Even most windows users dont even know what that is, but ye all know time machine by now.
Ah look, we all know MS invented the computer and all features that go on it.
Really, they _were_ the first to come up with all the ideas.
somehow though, its not _how_ or _when_ its done, its the interface/implementation that matters to Joe Gobshitte. Funny that too.
anyway, time to go burn the fridge
at least
we only have to shift thinking by a few weeks. as opposed to Vista where 2005, 2006 and 2007 are the new 2004.
Ah, now i got it... Apple copied Time Machine from M$ !!!! lol
@ John Macintyre
who said it was ebay??
irony?
"Green Lantern's return stretched credibility almost as much"
funny to read that in a thread that is discussing fictional characters with
(usually) non-terrestrial powers.
>> The Green Lantern is credible enough, but for him to return?... nah..
bit too far fetched for me<<
:-p
anyway, everyone knows I am the true Batman
anyone remember the line in South Park, return of Chef
"And he lived for eternity .... until he was hit by a train in 1892"
or something like that...
@ anyone
tell you what... use an iphone for a month, then come back and give an informative decision. When the iphone launched, i said i wouldnt get one, reminded of that everyday by my friends.
However, used one and quickly switched.
To anyone who says you can get handsets for free etc,, yes you can buy wine for £2 a bottle but how come you buy the £7 bottle? Quality and doesnt blow your head apart.
I now can finally leave my laptop behind and use just the iphone. Could never do that with any other phone no mater how much i tried and i own an ISP.
Anyway , stick your cheap handsets...
Biased views always win ;-)
@MDA Vario III
i'm not saying there arent cheaper options out there, sure there are.
My point is that i NEVER heard anyone comparing prices by looking at total contract cost before and NEVER heard so much whining about prices when other phones have sometimes cost up to and over £700, but now, its all about the £1000 the iphone costs over 18 months. Wrong! The phone PLUS calls plus texts plus free wi-fi costs £1000.
And granted there are better features on others, but this Apples FIRST phone ever. Lets compare later this year.
Dont forget that £550 is saved over 18 months.. yeah maybe you could lease that ipod and xbox for £30 a month ;-)
@ rick
£1000 for an iphone? someone saw you coming or else the brain hasnt engaged yet today. you can get one downtown for £270
and before you start mumbling about "total price" , only do that if you are going to quote every other phone in terms of "total price"
Nokia n95 can cost from £249 - 399, an 8880 for over £400 and nobody batted an eyelid at that before.
Now you can get a phone AND ipod together for less and its a "rip off". Grow up, bunch of whiny bastards.
why?
didnt even read past the first paragraph as I had to ask myself why you would publish this today and not wait 8 more hours when the keynote speech might give more of a clue as to the sdk features.
Seemed a bit pointless to me unless there is another agenda?
how
how come nobody has asked how the kid was caught?
"oh, the train has derailed... hey that kid has a tv remote - Get him!!!"
the paris icon because it has a question mark ;-)
give them confidence
Windows Live : Built on Vista Technology
based on that, it bound to go down a treat
no pleasing
when there was a lack of staff to handle the rush in the US everybody complained that apple/ at&t were badly prepared and only interested in screwing people.
now they are hiring extra to cope and people can only say why are they needed if the phone is so easy to use.
the answer is that they are needed to deal with time wasters like you who have to find something to be unhappy about. gobshites.
@bob
yeah, apple went out on purpose to source a faulty component...they are such bastards... grow up!!!!
the fanboi's are bad enough calling things like this a feature, but people like you are worse who have to jump in immediately with dumb coments.
EVERY company in the world involved in manufacture get a substandard component at some stage.. thats life.
bet people like you complain every night that its gotten so dark, like you have been hard done-by...
why cant common sense prevail??
ok, car analogy aside, if you take ANY product and hack it to make it do what you want, the manufacturer does NOT have to make any update they issue compatible with your hack. Answer : DONT apply the update. they even warned you. i am not talking about modding (like a skin/wheels/stereo/headset) i mean _hacking_ . Chip & nitro your car and see what happens to your warranty...
as for contract and 'forcing you'. You dont have to buy the product if you dont like the terms.. simple. i want a package holiday to spain, but they FORCED me to fly there? no. this is the offer. I have a brain. do i want the offer or not? i make a choice. i dont want an at&t /O2 contract, fine, go somewhere else.
And there is NOTHING new here. loads of handsets are only available through one operator. its only highlighted now because the product is so desirable by the masses.
and apple screwed no-one.. offered a product, people bought. no stealing, got what you thought you would get. Update brick your phone? I know of people who got a replacement, but apple can refuse if you hacked it. Show me one report of someone with an genuine one, that was bricked and then refused service..please.
and before the fanboi flames start, yes i use apple products, but i also think apple have messed up with the iphone. Wrong business model. And guess what? MY mind says that even though i want it and want it open, it isnt, so i wont buy it.
Brains , people, use them.... now repeat after me.. "We are ALL individuals"
law
"Why do people think it is their 'right' to use the iPhone on any network?"
Becasue you are allowed to by Law and that supersedes any contract you enter into.... not that hard to grasp really.
That said, I have been an avid Apple user for over 15 years and now think that they have gotten it TOTALLY wrong... iphone will still be a success, but they are still doing it wrong. bad ethos. my next phone will still be a nokia now.
edit to above
ok, now i am laughing at myself... the figures quoted above are for the industry!
going back under my rock
how come no one spotted this??
from the third post :
"A sample "normal" quarter (Q2 2006) has 225,000,000 phones shipped"
Well then , thats already 215m more than they 10m they wanted in a year. LOL
And we are expected to trust your maths when you mistake millions for thousands
ROFL!!
in other breaking news, a man woke up. . .
sympathy
OK, i realise my comments were a bit harsh and now is not the time to rub people in it.
I think its great that you build up your business and its growing. I was there once , (still am in many ways) and know what its like to get crap wages while you keep putting money back in.. it seems endless.
But, losing a day here and there for some reason is ALL PART OF BEING IN BUSINESS. Some Newbies just dont get that.
Tomorrow , your own Elec supply could be down, do you have your own generator? The next week you could be broken into and have all important equipment stolen, after that it could be a fire. All these things happen and affect your business.
Reality is that if you run your own business it YOUR decision what redundancy to put in, not someone you hire. If you cant afford it right now, then fine, but be prepared that if it goes wrong you might lose a day and get on with it. Now you might be able to say, well, at £500 a day, its worth putting in a server in the US for $100 a month.
i personally think fasthosts have done well considering the circumstances. Yes , maybe some better information flowing, but come on, put yourself in the same position.. it aint easy.
total idiots
anybody who complains here about this ruining their business... cop on! you are only making fools of yourselves. I run an ISP and even this didnt ruin my business, so if you are in a different sector how can it have that effect on you?
And if you are large enough that being offline DOES affect you that much, if you have relied on only one host/server then you deserve to be fired.
To all the others who are going to move.. who is to say that the datacenter you move to doesnt have their 'black' day next week?
Would your brains not kick in now and make you decide to not 'move' but to get _another_ server elsewhere and have redundancy. If you cant afford it, then the website ISNT so crucial to your business and your whining is just plain lies.
eg : 10k loss in 1 day and it never crossed his mind to spend 1K extra per year and put in a server in the US?? Come ON!!!
I have servers in Ireland, Uk and USA so no one point of failure. Yes, its an inconvenience when servers are offline, and some clients are lost, but thats bsuniess, not matter what sector you are in, things go wrong and its up to you to decide if the cost of safe-guarding is worth the potential loss.
Base point is : things go wrong, no matter where you host, if you dont plan for that, it your own fault.
I know loads of people wont like hearing what i have just said and i am open to major backlash now, but, to me it just seems like common sense.
I pity them
I have over 20 servers there. All were down at 7am. Rang the support line and was number 55 in the queue and got through over an hour later.
Engineer told me that they were working on it and staff couldnt even get to work.
About half the servers came back online about 9.30 and the rest about 1pm
The RSS feed says that phone services in the area are out due to weather.
Fair play to them, cant be easy.
