Tony, a very good article.
I am going on hols in 3 weeks and plan on buying an iPad so i dont have to bring the laptop. Will be the second time in 13 years i will be able to go away without a laptop.
My main work uses will be in browsing, email, SIP via fring and ssh/vnc/rdp/teamviewer, all of which i do on the iphone already on the move, so think i should be covered, just having a bigger screen and bluetooth keyboard.
Thanks for the tip on ethernet in the hotel, i'll be packing my airport express just in case.
I'll let you know how I get on.
we might finally see the type of video phones used in Earth Final Conflict. The modern day Kirk Communicator.
powered by FaceTime of course !!! :-)
buy it now
a company decides to do a web stream and its gets this type of article???? wheres the Chief Editor? Surely you should physically beat employees who turn this nonsense in as a story.
Its not like a live web cast has never been done before.
and only being available on Apple Platform.. ever heard of Beta testing? why dont we burn every company at the stake that only releases for one platform during testing.
God almighty, i must be getting old, my patience for this is gone very thin.
At Last !!! someone else who read the Reg and "gets it"
Good post Sean, pity alot of other readers will probably read it and disagree simply becasue they just dont understand the model.
although , i dont know if google will actually be in a net gain on Android. Development and support costs are huge, and unless the Ad supported Apps dramatically take a greater share, then it might not be enough. Wouldnt it be funny then if it went the same way as Wave etc when the bean counters decide to cut it !!
@andy and AC
since when is there an apostrophe in plurals? its usually used in places to denote ownership
eg: the cat's bowl ( the bowl belonging to the cat)
eg2 : the cats are black ( plural, no apostrophe)
go learn engrish ! at least you have pointed our what half of the population you are in !!! ;-)
yeah, totally agree, fring is a great SIP client. If they punted it as being that , with IM and fring out thrown in, then the could easily start selling it to SIP users for a few quid a go.
Compete with eyebeam etc.
forget about skype tie in and concentrate on their own services
an even better one
MBNA site. Used to have UN and PW box on one page and changed it to a 2 step process.
So you can keep trying usernames first to get confirmation of ones registered.
I rang them to highlight this and the guy on the phone rather bluntly told me that i was wrong, it was a security 'enhancement' and that no-one there had ever heard of what I was talking about.
would love them to read this story...
ok, i'll agree with you on that one, but what if Google put one tenth of the effort that Apple put into vetting all the apps.
They dont need to be as paranoid as apple , stopping browsers or such, but just preliminary checks that items dont contain malicious code.
then normal norman on the street will feel a bit more confident and these stories will be few
insecure techie i'll bet
what makes you think I am an apple user?
bad drivers are dealt with by being caught by the law and fined/imprisioned. Maybe you meant to suggest a financial punishment for users who are reckless with their computing devices?
anyway, I am in no way referring to the motor industry. I am talking about the computing industry. lets try keep your arguments on that topic. Yes I believe that the average user needs controls and protection in place. Tech savvy users do not need them but to make money on volume sales, I would not target my product at them solely and would prefer to instead cater for broader market.
Why is it so hard to accept that not everyone is a computing genius?
when will techies learn that tech savvy users are not the same as general consumers.
Android is a great product, but you have to have a walled garden like the iphone for average joe/josephine
surely the desktop OS history has taught us that? although, come to think of it, the only thing techies learn is how to repeat "My view is the correct one, everyone should do as I say"
and yes, i do appreciate the irony of giving my view here that knocks others views... ;-)
Re : Copy
Terry, I am referring to the fact that after the iMac came out, suddenly there was and i-Everything on the market. And even irons came in bondi blue.
Now there is the iPad and all speculation turns to what x-pad the competition will bring out.
Why do tablets now have to be called pads'?
Come on, wheres the imagination?
(there are other minor examples too, but you get the idea..)
why has no-one got an imagination? including RIM
why the hell does it have to have 'pad' in the name at all??? do all companies have to copy Apple right down to the name?
SURELY they could hire a branding team to come with a name?
At least its not Dell though, who would name it the easy to remember 'X9B7207-g' :-)
whine whine whine ......
fact is, I (and almost every other mac user I know) have NEVER bought an Apple device for the coolness.
I know they dont "just work". Perfection in software / hardware from any manufacturer is pretty much impossible.
But they do 'work' much better than anything else. I know I am much more productive using a mac than windows. I have to use both on an almost daily basis so its nothing to do with what i am familiar with.
Now can you claim that you have spent years working on both, so that your post was an informed decision? Or was it just a jealous rant of someone who just fears the unknown so has to justify their own faults by masking it with a put down of others?
a muppet could see that the connector melted and left a mark on the phone, not the other way around.
Unless the phone is capable of bursting into flames, melting nearby plastic and somehow repairing itself through nano-technology to appear like it suffered a minor heating.
Now theres a conspiracy for the Transformers fans !!
why isnt this story classed as ROTM?
just to clear up and ask the relevant question
suppose first of all, fair play to him... good effort.
@various, its not that Apple couldnt, its that they _Wouldnt_ (their choice really, no-one elses)
so, the big burning questions are : Does it actually kill the battery life? Does performance die? Does it crash? Can you use all the online apps, that were designed for using a keyboard, with just a touch interface?
nothing else matters much really.
modify the file structure on your phone?????? in gods name why to fuck would you want to do that?
Ah, to be fair, its great that there is an app for the 0.0001% of the planets population that want to do that.
FFS, i'm a complete low level techie and i have absolutely no desire to mess with my phone. ITS A PHONE !! Doing something just because other 'techies' go 'cooooool dude' is not _actually_ cool
and @Ben Tasker : Grow Up !
well said sir, however, it will fall on deaf ears.
Techy types have it built into their DNA to think that everybody in the world sees things as they do and if they dont see value in a product, then everyone else is wrong. And NOTHING can change that idea.
The insecurity of thinking that they might have to admit that there is a piece of technology or product that they havent heard of, used or own causes utter chaos and anger in their blinkered view, resulting in picking out the flaws in a product because it is not 100% perfect with all functions that can be conceived built in.
Ironic that the same people could never build up a business and produce the products they criticise in 100 years. No real talent. They simply dont understand the principles of business.
So , no, they will never tire of telling everyone else they are wrong and the mindless "its crap, it doesnt suit me, so it cant suit anyone " comments will keep flowing. despite that fact that it will shape how all other manufacturers start producing their version... irrelevant.
but i could be wrong !! ;-)
ignore the obvious
So the phone operators have done the same as the broadband providers.... in a race to the bottom to prove who can provide the cheapest service, they completely forgot about costs.
Kinda like what Dell did too.
Now that they are down there and realising that providing the "unlimited" plan costs more than they charge, so now they want to either grab a portion of someone elses revenue or try do it themselves.
So when they do open their own App store and then 2 years later realise that the cost of that is more than they realised, what then? Close it down and 2 fingers to customers.
They all want to be the RyanAir of their industry, but they havent the brains on how to do it.
Maybe BMW and Ford should go after Shell , BP etc because they dont get a portion of the Petrol sales.
I know . i know , its not a direct comparison but you get the picture...
"will have a whole new and more intuitive user interface"
when will nokia/RIM/MS et al realise to _stop_ putting in a new user interface every time. Think it out properly and stick with it for more then 1-2 years. its what annoys users most and detracts for the immediate recognition of your product.
also, i think "the trend for the browser to morph into the OS" is a mistake for any OS.
kinda like a few years ago when the Set-top TV box was all the buzz. Pointless and never took off.
oh and @/\/\j17 , I know loads of people who are still buying their first iphone. IN fact in the last 3 months here in Ireland i know more who have just bought one than in the previous 18 months (mainly because Vodafone just started supplying them)
trojan ≠ virus
cant infect me unless i actually allow it by installing it with my password.
i wonder, are Mac users really just more intelligent than windows users and know that clicking 14 confirmation boxes in a row without reading them is just dumb.
Maybe that the new argument in future. OsX, Linux, Windows are all equally secure, just the users of windows are thicker. i'd buy that. !!!! ;-)
and cue the hounds...
you are the one who should check first before posting.
An abbreviation is a shortening of a word (eg: abbrev.)
An acronym is a subset of abbreviations that involves initialisation or similar.
maybe you should have RTFD first !! LOL
Dear Rik Myslewski
Obviously you are not the type of person who creates a company with $40bn cash reserves. Giving it all away to shareholders is NOT the way to create a stable company capable of exploiting any area it sees fit. Mr Jobs has not done the company injustice and has proven time and time again that his way is better overall for the company , proven by the share price and company financial results.
You seem to be suggesting that he follow the "way it is done". Thats worked out great for so many other companies hasnt it ??!!!!!!
I thinks its great that Apple does it differently and more power to Steve Jobs for following a different path that is working while he is still alive.
We will all cease one day , but while he is still there hopefully he can empower and mould someone to follow in his path. I know i would.
Doing it different didnt work out too bad for him.
Applaud Mr Jobs for the good position that Apple is in today and not shoot him down for not doing it the way "its done" or how you suggest it should be done.
And as was said above, if anyone doesnt like it, simple, sell your stock. The rising share price must be a big burden for you.
ah in fairness Sarah, him saying the 'female in question' was rather innocent. I didnt even notice it until you highlighted. i dont think it was something thought out, to get at gurls ;-)
but i like this part:
"She said: "I can't bear to think about the body scanner thing. I'm totally traumatised. I've spoken to the police about it. I'm in too much of a state to go to work."
Straight from her solicitors mouth to get as much money from this.
lets be honest, most men look at womens tits all the time and make these comments all the time too.
any chance for an icon of yours , sarah???
how is this question even being asked by anybody with a grain of intelligence? Oh, forgot, its Reg Readers (damn, insulted myself there )
If you think you will need mobile use of the iPad, then buy the 3G one.
if you are stuck someplace with an ipad wifi and an iphone and need to do something online then USE THE FUCKING PHONE.
But hey, for the 0.001% of geeks that will really WANT (not need) to do this, then tether your iphone to your mac, the use internet sharing to share the usb/bluetooth tether connection out via wifi. Then join that wifi network with your ipad , and hey presto.. you are online to upload your latest BeJeweled score!
** the process & person
"The help file trick is pretty new to us. Usually on the client, we don't see this very often."
if its NEW, then you have NEVER seen it.... !!!!
if you dont see it very often, you have admitted to seeing it in the past, so it cant be new, you muppet.
or maybe he meant he usually sees it on the cloud & servers, not the client !!! LOL
everybody forecast doom and death to the iphone because it had no flash (software that is) and , oh wonder of wonders, its selling by the bucket load. I have yet to be put out in any way by not having flash on it and i surf a good bit on it.
so save yourselves the pointless debate, because history has already proven that it doesnt matter.
no, makes ME laugh
a GT3 is the same as a normal 911 with only " Minor tweaks, cosmetic changes" ????? Kid, slap yourself around for a bit will you?
Vista was and is slated simply because it is utter crap. Good intentions, badly implemented.
Win7 is really just a SP for Vista.... Same beating heart only this time it not arrhythmia...
starting to make apple's model look not so evil/bad after all now....
one thing i have to ask... maybe some user can help me on this... if I had a Moto Droid running v1.x of Android, how do I go about upgrading it to V2.x? can it be done? easy/hard?
once there are loads of different models of Android phones from different suppliers, are you still in the boat of having what was installed day 1?
for example, the first 2g iphone can run the same 3.x OS as all new 3GS iphones and there is a simple way for users to upgrade.
Whats the same route/tool available to android customers and will it too complex for the average user?
Microsoft NEVER brought out a tablet PC, their OS was installed on one built by someone else.
it would be like Bridgestone claiming they were the first to bring 4WD
Balmer keeps spouting about how many PC's and phones they ship --- ZERO! they never shipped one PC or phone in their life. Only the OS for one. And hardware vendors can drop suppliers. Watch what happens with WinMobile now that Android etc is around.
And the real benchmark is who makes one that USERS actually want to buy/use. thats the real key to design and implementation. No point in being first if you got it all wrong!!!
and just to be really bitchy... the iphone is the closest item on the market to being a ultra small tablet, so Apple do have a proven & profitable track record in this area too. (they make the entire device too!!)
its a good job the police described what he was wearing as i could not see it in front of me... i'll keep my eyes open for someone dressed like that so because its soooo likely that he will stay dressed in the same clothes until captured....
so you compare a 12 month plan to a 24 month plan and are surprised that the latter is more expensive??? AMAZING !!!
added to the fact that you compared a limited call plan to an unlimited call plan also..... LOL
just in case you cant work it out fully on your own, 647 x 2 = 1294
And for an extra 196 over the 2 years you can have unlimited calls and texts.
and in case you are still having problems, no the phone DOES NOT cost 1490. The phone PLUS all the calls and texts over 2 years cost 1490.
now get daddy to pat you on the head and sign your notebook to say its all your own work.
in that advert i saw more of the "alleged" iPhone than i did of the phone they were supposed to be advertising. and if i hadnt been reading this article, i would have finished the advert not knowing what phone was being advertised by what manufacturer.
at least i know what (i)phone to buy my niece now... she likes being a princess :)
except the "door" wasnt left open. He just picked some weak locks. So , now is it of if i come into your house if i find your locks easy to pick?
If he was clever enough to know how to hack , then he is clever enough to know the consequences.
If he gets off, then its just another message to potential deviants that you can get away with wrong doing.
Its time people were properly punished, so others get a message of what will happen to them if they do it.
and if they are of diminished capacity , it sends a message to the carers/parents that they need to also take responsibility.
If i knew my son was of diminished capacity, i certainly wouldn't let him loose on a computer without observation
seeing as i am ranting, i am also sick of the "sorry judge, i kicked the crap out of this guy, but i was off my face on drugs" defense. Why arent these people being then convicted of 2 crimes??? They have just confessed to both openly. No, instead, they get a reduced/probationary sentence because they were not in control of their actions.
i'm sure they same excuse wouldnt work in the case of "sorry judge, i mowed down 5 people in my car, but i was langers drunk at the time"
if only i was a frog
"but it's built on that very stable core Vista technology, which is far more stable than the current Mac platform"
ahhhh hahahahahaha , hahahahahahahahahahaha.ahhhh hahahahahaha , hahahahahahahahahahaha.ahhhh hahahahahaha , hahahahahahahahahahaha.ahhhh hahahahahaha , hahahahahahahahahahaha.
oh god, i have been depressed for 10 years, but this cheered me right up....
this is exactly the reason why i stay away from computers completely.
pen & paper rocks... (but only the paper with an apple logo in the bottom corner.... ;-) )
I watched the first 2 mins of that video and maybe its just me, but it doesnt look all that real !!!
i'd swear it was done on a computer.
Further proof that man never went to the moon and this didnt happen either !!
I saw a TV documentary last night hosted by the guy who used to be McGyver.
According to them there are litterally hundreds of planets in our solar systems, alot that support life too. They were able to get there by a ring like device with water in the middle.
So 8 or 9 is just irrelevant.
1. we did do it, its just we weren't where you were looking and were at the other side anyway, but honest, we did do it. Hey guy, look over there...
2. very sorry , but we were out a bit, so no pics of the original lunar landing site. But it is there, we SWEAR !!! Hey guy, look over there...
3. we cant get this quite right, but we did mange to put a few men there 40 years ago without any issues. Must have got lucky... Hey guy, look over there...
used 'svelte' twice in the one article to describe the same product. unforgivable!!!
also, maybe the reason why they wont term it as the touch 3G is that it would cause so much confusion for the lower IQ punters who think it is then capable of making 3G phone calls and data and then start a class action suit for misleading product description a.k.a. "please pay us money because we are too f$*king stupid to know what we are buying"
the world needs to change.....
"The evil rumour mill has it that their network was so utterly shite that they've had to spend mucho wonga to upgrade it to cope with the metrosexuals pounding it with their Jesus 'phones on the "unlimited" data service, so much so that this area of their service would have been about as reliable as O2's without some much needed attention. Thus, any profit they may have made (yeah, OK, but hypothetically) from the Jesus 'phone disappears into capex. Lovely."
So what you are saying is that they made so much profit from one phone, that they were able to upgrade their network? Without the iphone, all their users may still be on the old "shite" network and no sign of an upgrade. Now, if i could get a product into my sales line-up that would allow me to totally upgrade all my infrastructure in 2 years time, i think i would signup in an instant. That is GOOD business.
Of course, the obvious-ness of many things are lost on most readers here as they only see things as THEY want it, and wouldnt last 5 mins in the real world if they had to try and run any kind of company...
Is it Monday???
"Although the check was returned for insufficient funds, the fraudulent payment caused Citibank to temporarily increase her credit line"
The fraudulent payment caused them to increase the limit??? LOL LOL
Teller A: hey, there is no money in this account the check came from. what should i do?
Teller B: Err.... you have no choice but to increase the limit on the credit card, man. Its Banking 101.
Until these bankers start getting put in jail for the reckless trading that still goes on, the economy will stay in the gutter as no-one has faith in the system being fixed.
