did i read/understand this wrong?
"will test remote authentication techniques allowing networks who don't even have networks to offer network connectivity."
So the network who doesnt have a network will offer a network connection? How does that work?
Re: small point...
" Nobody said "Foxconn rebrander" "
yep, fully aware of that, which is why I said that Ms Leach loves the term. and the ref to Foxconn being the iPad maker in this article taking it a step further. too advanced for you?
no, dont have to read it, you are right, just like you didnt need to read my comment or reply to it. Gun to your head?
"iPhone and iPad maker Foxconn"
i know Ms Leach loves the rebranding thing, but isnt that taking it a bit too far??
Foxconn provide a supplier chain service to loads of companies, but this Bridy New Site doesnt ever refer to any Sony/Dell/Huawei/NokiaSamsung/etc gear as being from the "maker Foxconn"
Seriously guys, the humour in this has been beaten to death, the living shit kicked out of it. Are there any writer left in Reg Land with more of a bird brain that your logo to come up with new lines? One a year will do.
Re: No answer for 1m Android activations every day then..
how many of those activations are actually a reinstall of the OS and not a new user?
we'll never know.
anyway, techies still dont get it. turnover = vanity, profit = sanity. Market share doesnt actaully really matter if you are making most of the money
well this is progress at least.. the negative comments from the last articles must have struck a chord with Anna. One entire article without saying anything about "fruity firm" or foxconn.
This Birdy News Site might actually have someone in charge with enough sense to order copy and paste hacks to make more of an effort. Although she couldnt just write a normal piece without trying to pop in some little dig. Bitter much Anna?
Happen to agree though, tablets in 2003 would have failed. its well known Apple started dev of the tablet before 2003 and then decided that it wasnt where things were at and switched to the phone. Clever move instead of trying to ram a crap device down consumers throats. (queue the quips about all the other apple products... :-) )
But i suppose Anna's point is that he was proven sooooo wrong 7 years later. lol. Take that Steve. You fail!
I thought Ireland was bad for begrudgery!! this is getting commical.
Re: Situation normal
Yes, this Birdy News Site manages to sagnate a bit more every day.
How long before Anna gets her pink slip? Any chance of you "flopping", Anna, and doing an about turn on writing the same stuff every day. Stale. Stale. Stale.
Dont need to admit you are wrong, just do it differently and we will take that as an admission from you.
I am sure you can admit you are wrong.. havent seen it, but what do we know?
Re: Not impressed
Can one article on e-cars PLEASE tell me how much it costs to charge this thing?
I have yet to read one article what doesnt conveniently leave this out. Leccy is not Free.
Quoting MPG based on petrol is all well and good, but if you tell me that charging everynight adds £200 to my electricity bill each month, then the whole thing kinda goes up in smoke. (as the batteries most likely will after the first tip you have in the car!! )
This, the company pledged, "significantly advances the cloud computing experience widely considered the next major internet trend".
Re: As reported yesterday by other sites...
Been following this Birdy News Site's history with Apple for many years now, so no need to read up.
Its just that Reg were once able to come up with witty one-liners (and not just for Apple) that made me laugh too.
But now, the lines are just the same day in day out. Foxconn rebrander made me laugh to, until i read it for the 1000th time. And the irony is that in that time, Reg Reporting has gone into the drink so that they are really just themselves a rebrander of news from other sites.
I used to like the Reg for their ability to add humour and provide a satirical opinion on tech/corporate affairs, but now it like watching a stand-up comic use the same act for 30 years. You can predict it, heck you could standup and do it.
This Birdy News site is losing its edge.
Re: As reported yesterday by other sites...
Dear C. (too cowardly to use your name??)
I think he meant this Birdy News Site not bothering to fill web space with essentially copy and paste material and just provide the link to the original article.
And please, the constant referring to someone as a re-brander.... for gods sake get a new joke. Really. its old. We get it (although i never really understood it as most companies have to have suppliers. Its not like Foxconn designed the product or suppled the OS. )
Re: And your point is???
yep, looks like Mr Asay has already put a bit of his cash into Facebook shares and is desperately trying to convince people that 'its all ok' , hoping the share price doesnt nose dive.
my advice, dump them early.
Facebook, JC penny etc are all copping on to the fact that FB is a Social area, not a sales or reasearch area.
And tv works, because when the ads come on you cannot still see the program on any other part of the screen. On websites, you can ignore the advert becuase what you are reading is still there, so you dont have to switch your attention.
Oh, and to your question of how would GM know if the campaign worked, thats kind of the whole point of analysing a campaign. As in "We spent X here and sales and interest went up y%, but we spent Z here and sales/interest didnt budge" . If GM cant tell you that, No-One can. Centainly not you or FB. Maybe thats too much to understand for this Birdy News Site?
have to agree about the "X possible now steve is dead" comments.
Seems to be a flavour of the month statement from this Birdy News Site.
At least they have calmed down on the one CAPITAL word in the headline to make an article appear more gripping when its probably dull.
and this fanboi is definitely *not* frothing about bigger phone screens or smaller tablet screens. I like to be able to pocket my phone and use my tablet.
Re: This will be interesting
" Im thinking more like $500 for a 32" 1080 set with AirPlay and Siri for recommendations, recording, notifications etc."
Yeah, and i am think $2000 for a new AMG Merc.
Re: Accounting can be very creative
i dont see how money can be brought into this at all.
Whether they made money off it or not is not the issue, its that fact they used something without a licence.
So, if I am accused of stealing a DVD, I can show my taxi fare receipt into town and the meal i had and say, overall the excursion cost me money, and get off with it?
** for our younger readers, "DVD's" were physical, large, shiny discs that films and software came on in the past **
fruity frim, foxconn rebrander etc.... Reg, that become old now... get a new line. Same as when everyone started taking the piss on AppleInsider comments because every article they wrote included the line "as first reported last XX by us"
Mabybe we will start calling Reg as the Nominet or RackSpace Rebrander, seeing as they are suppliers, or the overdrawn firm ?
as for the article :
"now that Macs were under attack from bot armies like the Flashback Trojan"
What other bot armies "like" flashback? are there? answers greater than 1 only and preferably showing a significant threat.
So effectively he things that BSD is comparable MS XP? Good to know.
I happen to agree that Apple need to up the game slightly, but his comments are waayyyyy out there.
so bad this one is BRILLIANT
a must watch when you are pissed
Re: Sounds shitty
They might as well burn the R&D and production money instead of wasting it to bring this to market.
They really have missed the whole "knowledge of your market". Game sharing only ADDS to sales. I have often gotten a game from a friend to try and liked it so bought it when he took it back. Without that loan, i wouldnt have tried it, hence wanted it.
Bloody Apple and their walled garden!!!! :-)
being pedantic i know
but there is no iPad 3. its just the iPad now, same its just the iMac not iMac 17 , or AppleTV or Mac Pro.
Good move I think
As regards the story, if i was this wrong so often in work I would be booted out, how come these guys get paid for saying stupid stuff and then changing their minds when it turns out to be wrong and then get paid for a new report saying something else wrong. Mind blowing
How utterly crap and tacky does that stuff look. Impressive to a 5 year old or a boy racer with the usual style and taste that make a 5 year old blush.
"with a bit of Batmobile tossed in" The batmobile would never allow itself to be desecrated like that.
( i am standing firm here that the Joel Schumacher films never existed. )
if i saw a car with the animated lights i would deliberatly ram the car. see how much that costs to fix! ha
Re: Re: Re: Looks more like Apple locking people into the app store to me
I have to admit a bit of tongue in cheek with that part of my post. Just highlighting how completely ridiculous people get with their arguements for/against certain things.
I happen to like the 'walled garden' idea on my phone. I have yet to think of an App that i couldnt find in the App Store that i 'really' need and i consider myself a power user.
I am happy that i am quite safe though.
Its all fine getting a virus on your computer and it spewing out spam. Cost = zero (and yes i know,it can be more if it gets access to password etc, but for this example i am just identifying one issue)
But on my phone, if i get something that , the texts/calls to premium can cost me.
So a phone should be more guarded.
and anyone who hates the walled garden, then answer is simple... just find a different phone, no big deal :)
Re: Looks more like Apple locking people into the app store to me
what a nonsense article.
There is NOTHING here to lock you down, just a select box to allow the user to pick a setting. BIG NEWS!!
OS X will never be locked down like iOS.
And if you want to talk about locked down, how come no-one ever said windows was locked down because it only allows me install windows apps. I want it to run my mac & *nix apps and it wont. Bloody M$ and their walled garden ! what a load of Crap.
interesting that the companies who say this is bad are the ones who stand to lose financially.
stop talking crap guys. Its only a setting that can be easily changed. I know I would set it to App store only on my kids / idiot families Macs so I have one level of worry less with them.
"The guy behind me stopped, and the bees all made for his headlights,"
did you think to test all the bees in that hive for the parasite? they might have all been infected but you didn't know...
just saying.... ;-)
" started to glow red"
it would have to be _*VERY*_ hot for that to happen and at that temperature, it would not look like the photo.
i'm sure there was a flaw in this device, but lets keep the report in the realms of normality.
glass hoses - stones
much like the flaws in your typing/grammar. If you point at others failings, you have to be on a very high perch....
"smartphone manufacturers could relinquish control of the operating system software updates. This process has already been implemented with the Apple iPhone"
Apple have relinquished control of their updates? really? really??
Am i reading that part wrong?
in case any of ye havent cottoned on to the common item here, its NOT the GPS that sucks the power, its when you have the SCREEN on permanently.
Thats why runkeeper etc doesnt suck battery.
No matter what you are doing, if you have screen on all the time, your battery will drop like a stone.
Reduce the brightness can have an amazing effect on battery life.
dont be evil
Just get the world + dog to use your free service and then start charging them.
how long before they do this to other 'free' services?
not so "cool" , are they now?
BTW, i dont disagree to the charge, just think this is going to change how people view them
if all malware is known to have included code to not run in a VM (windows & mac) then surely it must be possible to put something in place to make it *look* like you are running a VM , even if you are not, and then malware wont run? Is that over-simplifying it?
Eg: malware checks for a plist or a registry setting and wont run if its there. Then just put it there even though it does nothing.
would that work? should i patent that?
why would anyone want to try copy windows?
anyway, you cant sue people who copy ideas that you copied/stole anyway.
and are you saying that MS *never* sued anyone?
Yah, sure they did it the perfect way, thats why the EU and US have had them in court many times for their trading practices.
you forgot the 'joke alert icon'
modern day word for that is "Blogger" ... get with it !!!
While I myself think that the RC Faith is a bunch of nonsense, this hacker has demonstrated that he is no better than a persecutor of others based on their beliefs.
Everyone is entitled to their beliefs and his/her actions only show an intolerance of this.
This Hackers actions are in principal (not magnitude) the same as the Crusades or Terrorist Bombing. Thought process stems from the the same initial basis.
Maybe the hacker might benefit from a bit of teaching about respect for fellow man and living your life to the best of your ability without causing distress to others.
Ironic isnt it????
reload page until your details come up???
In the meantime pretend you didnt see all the other peoples data. and dont copy and paste it.
tell them to stop using WHERE 1 LIMIT RAND(),1 in their mysql query !! LOL
"We are following up unconfirmed reports that Steve Jobs is actually still alive."
Bad taste lads. Bad taste.
Attempt at humour in this article is a major fail. Total crap. Very disappointed.
article misses so much it scary
kids "cheap/free" grow up to be the soccer dads and then want the "cool" phone instead of being seen as Mr Cheapo Dad
Google have NO experience in dealing directly with support/sales issues with the general public with respects to hardware. What makes you think that they know what way to go on this and wont mess it up?
What about all the Google 'partners' who woke up Monday to find out that they are now Google Competitors. Direct competitors ! If I was HTC/Samsung I would be worried that future versions will be X months behind what google release on their own phones, Or what if they decide in a year that they no longer provide Android to third parties? I'd be looking for a plan B pretty quick. And remember , I have just spent the last year or 2 giving them all my sales data and now they are my competitors !!
iPhone is about the whole eco-system apple built. Google might not be able to replicate that fully.
They are a copy-cat company in everything but search/ads. I cant see how acquiring Moto will change this.
well said !
IT tech people rarely make good business people. They all want to piss on their own street corner like a clueless mutt and bark loudly at other who come wandering by, but yet are so mad for affection and attention like a dandied up through-bred that they "race to the bottom" by providing their time and resources for Free in an effort to appear "cool".
** Disclaimer : before you start pissing on this corner and barking your head off, i used to be one of those until I copped on and realised that making profit was cooler.
1. fair play to Duncan. he reacted like any father. For anybody talking about his 'illegal threat', lets not forget how illegal it is to threaten his daughter. Another example of the victim becoming the criminal.
People have no fear of the consequences of their actions these days because they can get away with it and do-gooders will go on about their 'rights'.
2. Break both of your own arms? OK they will heal, but while you have 2 arms in a cast, who will wipe your arse?? That would humble any man!
nothing to worry about
I've already written a followup article that disproved his theory in 2021.
"And don't forget, if it were not for Linux, Apple's proprietary OS would not exist"
What the hell?? Are you saying that BSD is based on Linux?
Or that OS X is based on Linux?
Either way.... You have made a fool of yourself. Pity, to that point you were not doing too bad.
how it should have happened
Hire all 4
Put Tom in with his Nail File and more ideas. Susan's skin care business compliments this so add her product range too that she heads up and develops more in consultation with Tom. Helen oversees the operation, make it a well-oiled organised unit. Jim goes out selling the stuff... perfect
good to see someone with a bit of cop on and a brain around here... finally
SImple, consumers vote with their pockets and just dont bother buying this game in the first place.
I'm surprised Sony would announce this so soon after their recent embarrassment
"grow the f*ck up" ???
why dont you start your own business and produce something that others copy, then you might appreciate the position.
If they let this slide, then they are effectively saying that their patent application for the design was pointless. If they dont protect it fully, then it opens the gates for others to copy.
When you get yourself in this position you *might* start to appreciate the need to *have* to protect your IP.
in fact, for anyone that has a company and DOESNT protect their designs, they are the ones who should "just grow the f*ck up"
If MS said that windows is the largest installation in the world and i am selling house windows, could I challenge their trademark? Doesn't matter what he said! A trademark is a trademark
"And yes I have depression, OCD and Asperger's"
Firstly, thats is terrible, I really hope you have good support around you to help.
But, having all those, how many crimes have you committed and what have you stolen?
Diminished ability to tell right from wrong is completely different from having an illness.
Not saying that its true in this case, but I am sick of hearing law breakers going to court and "claiming" some unprovable illness as a reason for their action. It only makes things harder for people who have legitimate problems, like you.
The best one I heard was a guy who beat up the girlfriend and then robbed a car and his excuse in court was that he was off his head on drugs and booze. WFT?? Admitting more crimes is now a defence??
Why cant people have the common decency these days to just admit when they did something wrong and say sorry? Much more honourable and impressive.
not too far away
i want one !
not as bad as the security on MBNA's system. Went from a username/password combo on one page to putting the username on page one and asking for pw if you get username right.
Not only that but it also shows you the users 'sitekey' image and text before asking for pw as a security measure.
You can put in any username and get to the next page and see their 'sitekey'
SImple to copy to a phishing site and then get people to put in their password and suck up all the details for the lads in lagos.
Of course when i rang them to point this out, I was told i was wrong and its now MORE secure even though I would tell the operator what the sitekey image was for an account name i guessed.
Also emailed the Reg on this a few months ago, but seems like its not a news story!
Am I the only one who sees this as an issue?
He shouldnt have apologised.
Its about time people stopped pandering to all the wankers out there who whine about everything and act like a tough bully through email/online. Take the Michael O'leary approach.
He should have told that 'early adopter' to fuck off and read a book or have a conversation with his kids or something. Did your life end yesterday without copy/paste? No! So another day isnt going to make a bit of difference so STFU
Peoples perspective is arse-ways nowadays.
anyway, if he is an early adopter , why doesnt he have an iPhone. Everything else if just a bad copy months later..... ;-)
i'm definitely wondering....
when you say 'call mom' loudly, are you going to do a Hiro Nakamura on it and stop time and go to each phone and hold down the home button for 3 secs to activate the voice dial?
otherwise I think they will all look past you, waiting for the men in white coats to appear .. ;-)
and most likely the people spilling out of the stores with "iThingies" have just bought it, the clue being that they just left the store that sell them, meaning that the didnt already own one...
ah, its friday.. maybe you have a long week and need a pint...
" if Twitter think that they can control their platform completely then they're going to have to learn that it probably won't fly"
yeah, how dare they think they can control their own products and services!!!! i mean, who in their right mind would start a business with the idea of being in control themselves.
2 sides people, for all we know Twitter might have been asking for compliance for weeks/months and were being ignored... this might have been their last resort.
but hey, ignore that, lets find guilty and shoot first
Becasue WE know best right ! after all, we are Reg Readers !
@ElReg!comments!Pierre - think a little, please
"[Android] had been in development for quite a while before the iPhone came out"
are you trying to say the iphone development started *just* before it came out??
It was in development about 4 years before it came out, at least.
and everyone know what the early Android interface looked like. (pre june 2007)
anyway, back on topic... google were looking at bing to see if they should be copying what they are doing and found out that bing was already at it. imitation/flattery
