World+Dog to demand ever larger tablet-phones

Mostly_Harmless Silver badge

bigger != better

More screen real estate is helpful for seeing things (obviously) for me this is a "mobile device", i.e. mobile first, device second.

I'm sick of manufacturers adding capability to the Device at the expense of Mobility. My current smartphone sits nicely in my trouser pocket, alongside my wallet...I know that when it comes time to upgrade I'll have more device than I can fit into my pocket

Massive DDoS attack blasts 123-reg offline

from the 123-Reg website's System Status page

"This attack was identified by our network team who made immediate changes to remove the DDOS traffic from within our core network, and within 15 minutes key work was completed routing traffic through our redundant connections and blocking the incoming traffic on our core network."

To me, that sounds like pretty good drills on the part of 123-reg.

Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy S III

Size isn't everything

If I wanted a big screen, I'd buy a tablet. I'm becoming inccreasingly frustrated by phone manufacturers reversing the trend of decreasing-sized gadgets by making phones bigger and bigger.

This is a portable device, and for me that means pocket portable. Next time I come to upgrade my phone, I'm going to have to upgrade my trousers as well.

Improve efficiency and extended battery life, then look at improving features, but keep the size down

I travel on business quite a lot. When I'm on out I tend to (a) use my phone more, (b) find myself in places like airports where charging can be a problem.

My current phone, on heavy use, will last for a day or more without me getting twitchy about running low on power. Normal use, I can go for 2 or 3 days without having to plug it in

By contrast, my other half's 2012 model smartphone is gasping for a recharge come teatime after a day of normal use. I just know that if I had the same sort of phone, and subjected it to the sort of use my phone gets when I'm out of the office, then battery depletion would be a major factor for me (and looking at my fellow travellers, I don't think that my phone use pattern is particularly excessive).

battery friendliness wins over speed/performance for me

Being someone old enough to remember so much of the vintage hardware being reminisced about on El Reg this week, I am happily amazed to see such a fast chip with so many cores available for a device small enough to comfortably into my pocket.

But what I am much more interested in here is the improved power consumption. I have a smart-enough phone...what puts me off upgrading to a smart-as-you-can-get-nowadays phone is the fact than instead of charging the battery every few days, I'd be needing to top up the juice on a daily (if not more frequent) basis.

Cameron's attempt to cram a robot arm wearing a Rolex into his pristine bottom

Re: There are uses for diamonds

I'm sure I've heard a story about a guy who fell under a waterfall and the body got trapped by some rocks. It was ages before anyone found the body, but when they did his Rolex was still working perfectly, and the motion of his arm bobbing around in the water has been enough to keep the self-winding mechanism going.

Re: MRI + metal tattoos

There was an old episode of Mythbusters (old enough to still have the tattoo-covered Scottie in the build team) where they tested the MRI+tattoo story.

Verdict was "Busted" IIRC. the only way they got anything remarkable to happen was when they mixed up some ridiculously metal-heavy ink and put a container holding a couple of pints of the stuff into the MRI scanner.

Virgin Media snags London Underground Wi-Fi monopoly

Mostly_Harmless Silver badge

I appreciate that in the relatively short timeframe, the logistics involved in providing connectivity in tunnels as well as stations could well be prohitive. However, the point in the article about waiting times at stations is a good one - the majority of idle time during a journey is (generally) on the train itself rather than the platform.

Personally, I'd find it frustrating to check my inbox before departure, and then pick up an email per station as I progressed along my journey.

Seems like a good idea, but I suspect will fall short for overall user experience.

I would hope that in the (heaven forbid) event of a major incident then the wifi network would be available for emergency services to use as they wish, with free access provided even once the charging period has commenced.

The killer feature of a netbook for me is the small form factor - and I'm prepared to trade a bit of screen real estate in exchange for uber portability. If I was a busy executive doing a lot of travel, but still needed a machine for doing mundane email/office-y things, then why not consider a netbook?
