nbn™ talks up HFC upgrades to gigabit speed

Shane 4

Idiots

Looks like it's official then, We have a bunch of corporate idiots running the show that don't have a clue about tech.

If they build FTTP we don't need to upgrade the network which will save money and wasting time re doing it, By the time NBN is done it will already be time to dig it up and re do the copper because it can't handle future bandwidth needs.

Secondly why are they praising gigabit speeds on old HFC, Why don't they also tell the truth and say that those gigabit speeds are SHARED by all in the street, So you will be lucky to get any where near gigabit speeds especially during peak hour you may not even get 100mbit. They will be making you pay for the "gigabit speed" though regardless.

Waleed Aly's NBN intervention is profoundly unhelpful

Shane 4

Buffering

He is right sort of!

But it's not just your ISP and speed,Especially if he is talking about youtube, It is because they changed the way a video buffers with DASH(Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) and it sucks compared to the old way that would let you buffer the whole video and skip through it whenever you like. Even with a 100mbit connection youtube now sucks and stutters so much I find that I have to drop the quality settings down to 720p to have decent playback.

There is extensions such as youtube centre that disables DASH, But it doesn't seem to work for me, Others have had success.

nbn says Telstra's copper in better shape than expected

Shane 4

Link us all the article, Because every one I have read has said the opposite!

They are all ripping up FTTN and replacing with FTTP because FTTN wasn't giving enough bandwidth.

Five technologies you shouldn't bother looking out for in 2016

Shane 4

Next iphone should have been number 1 on the list. As a joke, because it's Apple!

Driverless cars at number 2

Netflix(Australian catalogue) 3 It's not a joke unfortunately

Smart TV's recording you and sending ads at 4

Encryption(lack of and government backdoors) at 5 The real number 1

Australia's smut-shocked senators seek net censorship (again)

Shane 4

Both parties need to stop being a parent!

First they uses tax payers money to hand out to single parents and bludgers, Then it gives baby bonuses to new families like a grandparent would do to help out, Next is first home buyers grants like a mum/dad would chip in for their kids.

Now it is acting on behalf of a parent in censoring things from minors, My advice to all you in government positions is GTFO!

What next RFID chips implanted in newborns, So they can be tracked at all times?

We can all laugh now but just you wait what the future holds, When they are just left alone to pass any law they like, All in the name of "protect the children", "terrorism" or "national security".

Forget Nth Korea,Pretty soon it will be Malcolm Jong-un leading the democratic people's republic of Australia!

Kim Dotcom slams 'dirty ugly bully' Uncle Sam as extradition hearing ends

Re: Time to wake up

Are you that very same person who defended leaded petrol or DDT all those years ago? lol

Sometimes laws need to be broken and questions need to be asked, And somebody needs to keep a watch on the watchers so they don't abuse their powers!

Who else is going to do it? A government official hired by the government to monitor the government?

I am sure that will go down well. ;)

"Those who think this is just child's play are clueless and most chose to stay that way. When their bank account gets cleaned out or their personal identity is stolen and their world is turned upside down, then they'll start to get in touch with reality and the digital world that we now live in"

Funny you dare say that considering governments around the globe are calling for even less encryption after Paris attacks.

All so they can "monitor terrorists" or "protect the children" and other buzzwords they like to throw around, If they get their way your bank account details and personal identity will be less secure than they are now!

I dread the day where future houses will have to be built entirely out of glass, Just so everyone else can see they are behaving themselves! We can laugh and joke about it now but who knows, Would not surprise me one little bit if RFID tags one day become compulsory, When a child is born one is placed under the skin. A case of let's "protect the children" after all right?

So I take it everyone on the planet can also take their car dealers to court for every speeding fine they receive, Car dealer must be responsible right?

They make it so easy for everyone to put their foot down and go over the limit, They also make nearly every new car able to go over 200km/h, Which is double the allowance in my country on freeways.

I don't see how any ISP or service is responsible for what people are doing with it.

Are gun dealers responsible for any shooting that kills someone, Are drug companies responsible for all the deaths caused by people overdosing or mixing with other medication,

Are bottle shops responsible for all the drunken behaviour and violence that kill others?

The list is endless!

Society may as well collapse if they think this way, Because everything can be blamed on someone else.

If I decided to start a business, selling donuts for example and some dude walks in and decides to eat until he bursts how is that my fault?

I am just offering donuts it's not up to me to tell the guy what to do with them!

Maybe Facebook and Sony should be taken to court for allowing terrorists the ability to communicate and plan attacks?

Where does it all stop?

Microsoft gets Edge on blocking ad injectors

Telstra's Netflix downloads get EVEN SLOWER

Shane 4

Speeds

I am on Telstra cable 100mbit which is already 3 times faster than the NBN obsolete crap government wants to roll out over here.

I can confirm ever since Netflix arrived here, The cable speeds have become a joke especially around peak time as everyone wants to use the net or stream.

It must be the reason why Telstra gave us cable users DOUBLE the monthly gb allowance from 500gb to 1tb, That was as soon as Netflix came here to try and make up for the crap speeds we now get.

So thank you Netflix for the extra 500gb from competition but also damn you for halving my speeds. lol

Australia’s opposition promises more fibre in national broadband diet

Shane 4

Re: The joke is on us

Don't under estimate Telstra, They were smart.

They knew their old copper network is already well and truly f@%#ed beyond repair and managed to sell it to NBN company for $30 million I think it was or something like that. lol

The ONLY way to do it properly is to run FTTP!

Seems expensive up front but it turns out cheaper in the long run, Idiots in government don't care for "long term" as they only want results now to boost their party.

The cost of the fibre cable has dropped substantially already when NBN was only on the drawing board.

The cost to maintain FTTN and then have to go back and replace it anyway will exceed FTTP's initial cost in the long run. All while Australia falls behind in global broadband speeds and with it potential new start up business's that could have boosted economy and created jobs.

Burn ALL the COAL, OIL – NO danger of SEA LEVEL rise this century from Antarctic ice melt

Shane 4

"no sea level rise danger", Says some scientist writing from the safety of Washington, Probably in a high rise building.

Try telling that to some pacific islanders who are already feeling the effects of sea level rise, Of course there is a danger depending on an individuals current situation. What can be debated is what is causing it but that is not the headline!

Apple iPhone 6S: Same phone, another day, but TOTALLY DIFFERENT

Shane 4

I think they forgot one of the zero's on the price!

I know the Aussie dollar is crap at the moment but the iPhone 6s 128gb launched at $1529! o.O

Could get an entire pc for that money.

And I thought $800 was steep for my imported Note II a few years back. lol

Can't see myself ever paying over a grand just for a phone but I am sure many out there do and good luck to them!

'Fix these Windows 10 Horrors': Readers turn their guns on Redmond

Shane 4

Those are only minor things to most of the normal users out there, I am more annoyed by the need to use a Microsoft account to actually use most of the new features in Win 10 like cortana.

Still many of us out there who prefer a local account only for their main pc.

Also the new Edge browser has 3 flaws which will piss off a lot of people out there, Can't open multiple tabs in any of your bookmark folders in one click or any clicks that I can see, Can't open a new tab to a page of your choice such as google search home page, It's either top sites(full of crap like facebook, twitter, amazon etc etc), top sites with news or a blank page. No custom option to open a new tab to a site of your choice.

And the last one is a simple one, Be able to sort your bookmarks by name, Have to currently drag each one to where you want it, A nightmare if you have 100+ bookmarks.

One other thing missing in edge which they will be adding later is extensions, So you can use your ad blocker and themes etc Should have been there from the start in my opinion!

Gone back to using IE/Firefox and Chrome until they can sort the mess out in edge browser.

It is fast though, I'll give it that.

Other than that Win 10 is pretty good, Basically what Windows 8 should have been, It is quite snappy and managed to set up EVERY driver for every piece of hardware I have, Which was a first for me ever. Usually always something windows manages to miss as I have enthusiast parts.

I think if you use the MS account you are going to get screwed, Marketing and spying on you galore.

I would rather just give up the new features like Cortana personal assistant and just use a local account.

Windows 10 Edge: Standards kinda suck yet better than Chrome?

Shane 4

Stability and speed please

All I care about is NOT seeing, "internet explorer has stopped working".

Give me a stable browser that can have at least 10 tabs open without one of them crashing, And then causing the page or tab to not be able to close, Usually requiring a complete browser shutdown and restart. Damn that was annoying in IE.

I like IE's easy layout, Firefox's functions and Chromes speed, Now merge them all into one browser. ;)

Australia's PM says data retention laws think of the children

Shane 4

Re: Well, terrorism AND protecting the children

Ohh don't worry about the DNA sample, I am sure they are already in the process of getting a contract for someone to make all the RFID chips to place under each citizens skin!

DNA only tells who you are, They(Governments around the globe) want far more information about you than that. They will be wanting to know where you are at all times soon.

Turnbull says NBN 'most reckless commitment of Commonwealth funds in our history'

Shane 4

If the NBN is worst in history then WTF have they been doing all this time in parliament, NBN can benefit everyone where as baby bonuses or first home buyer grants only benefit some! Take your heads out of your arses politicians, Investing money in countries infrastructure is far more important than anything else, Roads/rail/public transport, hospitals, schools and now in 21st century TELECOMMUNICATIONS more than ever.

If they bothered to do any research at all they would have seen some other countries that did FTTN are already saying it was a waste of time and money and are now upgrading to FTTP!

Carlos: Slim your working week to just three days of toil

Shane 4

The parts that say, Retire later and longer hours don't mix especially for REAL jobs.

By real I mean any blue collar job, Would love to see these office workers on a construction site or in a factory at age 70 doing manual labour. All good and well sitting on your ass punching codes into a computer or talking on the phone to some client anybody can do that. Now try standing for 8+ hours or lifting/carrying/assembling heavy stuff around all day, Or stuck on some assembly line where time is critical. Now picture those scenarios with a 70 year old trying to keep up. Yeah you see the problem!

If anything working day should be cut down to 7 hours so no one is so stressed and tired and it should be a 3 day weekend to fully recover, I bet if that was implemented worldwide just how much better/happier we would all be instead of this constant rush with everything along with stress and the hate/rage/violence that it can lead to.

But then again by the time a lot of these readers reach 70 they will be most likely replaced by robots/programs, That goes for office positions as well! ;)

BitTorrent not to blame for movie revenues, says economist

Shane 4

Geez let me see, Family night out at movies $50+(That's just the tickets), Putting up with annoyingly loud food wrappers from other people, Others using phones or talking through movie, Coming back to your car that's been keyed from some jealous asshat.

Compared to staying at home with family and friends, Reclining on couch with feet up like gold class, pizza or anything else which you cant take inside cinema, No finding parking space, No annoying people to ruin movie, Large screen TV with Dolby surround, $5 movie rental for HD version on my cable tv box and even 3d version for those that bother.

I think you get the picture, I know which one I'll take every time!

You can have a tv or projector that can cover your whole wall these days for an affordable price, The times have changed. They need to come up with a completely new experience if they want to take peoples money which is getting harder to come by for many.

Data retention saves Australia from TERROR says Labor MP

Shane 4

This is getting out of hand in all major western countries now, These dickheads seem to forget what our ancestors were fighting for. Freedoms which governments are now eroding away bit by bit. The terrorists have already won with out lifting a fkn finger, They have put fear into minds of governments causing them to act against its own people in the name of "safety".

Next they will be wanting us all to live in glass houses that way everyone can see what everyone else is doing!

Spend money on old school spies and overseas intelligence, Putting more restrictions or taking away privacy just shows that the fight is already lost in my opinion. You can not stop any attack just as you can't stop some completely normal citizen one day losing it for any number of reasons and going on a rampage hurting/killing other people, All the data in the world won't help.

Just give me more storage and an extra days battery use, Couldn't give two shits wether it's iphone or android anymore or 2k,4k,8k resolution or whatever they are trying to push these days, Have had both and they are just as good as each other. 128gb on device(before sd card) would be nice for a lazy bastard like myself who doesn't like deleting their podcasts and other media just to make room!

Ohhh and most importantly seeing as it is a phone after all how about adding a decent antenna instead of the shit from both lately, signal quality seems to be getting worse each new generation, Not sure if it's because of all the BS and bloatware installed or what but it can't be my phone company, The towers don't move!

Doom god John Carmack teleports from id Software to VR upstart Oculus Rift

YES, Yes you would be addicted to it. It isn't like 3d glasses, This puts you IN THE GAME!

It is a whole new gaming experience, It is so realistic that quite a few people get motion sickness from it and they are still trying to figure out a way to get around that.

If the price is right it will be the next biggest thing in gaming without a doubt. Then of course there are many other uses for it, medical, engineering, military training and yes probably porn.

Only let down is the low resolution but I hear the final consumer version will have a HD version when it's released.

Many out there are willing to fork out $500+ on latest graphics card so they wont have any problem doing the same on something that will totally change their gaming experience.

AIR TIME! Our expert cosies up with the new top-end iPad

Shane 4

Seems decent, I have been on old ipad 2 and just got a hand me down off old man who just got ipad air, Now I have his old ipad 4. Having said that though my next tablet I will buy is probably a Galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition, Just seems like it has most of the stuff I want on it. Better screen, higher pixel density, micro sd card slot, S pen, no issues with flash web sites etc etc.

Ipad air has it right on size/weight department though, It feels a lot easier handling it without much effort!

Sorry but I don't know anyone that prefers cloud over having it stored locally on disc, card, drive or whatever, Cloud is rubbish if you are struggling to get a connection, Why should I need an internet connection just to play a song or video I own. What if the server is down for maintenance, Also don't want my personal files stored on some computer on the other side of the globe where their laws/jurisdiction is completely different to where I am, who knows they could be looking at the data and selling the info to a 3rd party.

There is absolutely no question we are having an impact, I think most scientists now agree on that part, The only question is how much are we responsible for, Is it substantial or is it insignificant.

Goes to show how short sighted you are! Higher speeds will allow for things that are not even around that one day you will take for granted just like now. You can always go back to your 14.4kbps dial up modem if you like!

You think spending on infrastructure is a waste? It's the best thing any country could ever spend money on, Rather have my tax dollars being spent on this than some stupid fkn baby bonuses or first home buyers grants that just make society worse off and only benefit a minority.

Fibre to the node, yeah that's great download whatever at super fast speeds in seconds to the end of your street then wait hours for it to get to your pc, Bad luck if it's critical work load that needs to be done! Not all out there want it for movies/games downloads, Some run business's or work from home, More speed=more opportunities.

Australia's coalition launches new broadband policy

Shane 4

No idea

What's worse is at the start coalition said wireless was the future and a better option than fibre, Just goes to show exactly how little they know about how it all works. Wireless base stations what are they plugged into, yeah that's right, cable/fibre, Coalition seems to think wireless just works on magic and faeries. NBN would actually make wireless better by having more bandwidth to go around.

No way in hell I am voting for Liberal next election they have no idea what they are talking about on this subject. Give it up and find another subject to attack Liberal cause on the NBN subject you are just making a complete assclown out of yourself.

2
0
Shane 4

Coalition has no idea

FAIL!

Lost a vote, A lot of people including myself have had 100mb/s connections for the past few years here and they are talking about NBN alternative of 25mb/s, What century are you living in? The whole point of NBN isn't just to provide CURRENT needs but allows FUTURE proofing for all the upcoming HD content in the future as well as enabling business's to utilise teleconferencing and other high bandwidth features, 25mb/s won't cut it for 4k TV's when that comes out but fibre will easily get to 1gb/s speeds which will be what the next generation will need and want.

Coalition has their heads up their asses and is just after a cheaper quick fix, All that will happen is their version will end up costing the same or more later on when they have to go back and upgrade, Better off to spend the money now and do it properly, I don't regard the huge cost as a waste when it is part of a countries infrastructure, Do it right the first time! Rather have my tax dollars being used for this so that everyone will get the option to use it rather than see it pissed against the wall with stupid baby bonuses or first home buyers grants that only a few will benefit from.

I'll stick to my optical media for a while yet thank you very much. I buy quite a lot of stuff off Steam when they have sales, But other than that their prices just don't compete with a boxed game from online retailer somewhere on the other side of the globe!

Also I doubt the next gen consoles will be cloud only, Would be the biggest mistake in tech history at this point in time.
