More Google catchup.
in 2018 they may be where Google is today with mapping. But where will Google be by then???
Re: Android Heaven
WP8 is secure for only two reasons.
1/ Nobody uses it.
2/ There are no apps for it.
If the Android user decides to follow the link and download the app
Errm, so it's not on the Play Store then...
This simply highlights WHY users shouldn't disable the Android security that prevents sideloading, despite what Facebook and Amazon would like you to do....
"In the past we've suspected this change in cadence could reflect a desire by Microsoft to encourage people to go to Windows 8 quicker."
Most people don't want to go to Windows 8 AT ALL....
The Android comparison is totally unfair.
What Microsoft did when the OS changed, was made all existing apps incompatible, and old phones incompatible with new apps, leaving Windows Phone 7.x owners out in the cold with nowhere to go (they did it several times before too)
Google have ensured pretty much all Android apps work on yoru phone REGARDLESS of it's OS version. 99% of apps will work all the way back to Android 2.1, 60% or so all the way back to Android 1.5
How dare Google
take away a free service that nobody ever paid for..
Re: Android's problems
If you REALLY did application development
1) you would know that every time Apple make a new class of device, none of the old apps work, remember when you had to rewrite all your apps to make them work on tablets, and then again for the iPad3 and then again for the iphone5? Yep, that's REAL fragmentation for you. The OS doesn't deal with different aspec ratios AT ALL. Android deals with all of this, it allows you to include as many layout fragments as you need in your APK to handle all sorts of devices. If you didn't know this, or that there is a REALLY good compatibility library which backports all the cool stuff to versions of Android all the way back to 1.5, then you REALLY shouldn't be writing apps.
2) McAffee say lots of things, what they don't say is how many of these affect Google Play store, and how many affect some dodgy Chinese users with el-cheapo tablets where everything (including malware) has to be sideloaded. By the same token, nobody wants to talk about the massive piracy and malware problems that affect jailbroken iPhones... I wonder why,,, because Malware products aren't allowed on iOS, so there is nobody liek Mcaffee bleating about their snakeoil "solutions". Quite clearly you have fallen right into their trap set for gullible consumers.
3) Android allows you to load whatever browser you like, unlike iOS (where eveything is either Safari, or a Safari skin that's intentionally hobbled so it can never be as fast as the native browser). If you don't like Chrome (and I do, it's superb on my nexus4, but on slower phones, I can see why it might be a bit sluggish), then there is plenty of choice. Opera Mobile is REALLY good and renders very quickly even on 2-3 year old Android phones.
Re: Does the OS version matter?
Indeed, as regardless of Android version, you can run all the latest apps just fine... So really, what's the problem.
If you care about it, buy a Nexus. £159 gets you a Nexus7 that's always bang upto date (and not only much cheaper than the iPad Mini, better spec too). £259 gets you a Nexus4, which totally kills the iphone5 in pretty much every respect (aside from LTE/4G).
The guy is clearly a retard anyway, as he also claimed
"When you take an Android device out of the box, you have to sign up to nine accounts with different vendors to get the experience iOS comes with,"
Which is rather funny, as when I signed into my Nexus4, I only had to sign into a single Google account. If he is making this stuff up, why should we believe anything else he is spewing out in a desperate attempt to stop the Apple exodus...
Taken this long?
Of course Android supports other stores and side loading, so not really a biggie.
A4WP is over.
QI is the only established standard.
and as for Apple, well Apple is being Apple and doing their own thing. Expect the £150 iAirCharger that does the same thing as as a £30 QI charger, but has premium Nano wire coatings on their coils that enable better electron flow (or some other bullshit to fool the gulible iTards).
Hmm, sounds like the Xperia Smartwatches
..... from several years back.....
I think she is right...
-0.7% drop month on month for the Windows Phone disaster.
Nokia copies Sony's low-light demonstation from 2011
for it's flagship Lumia 920 in 2013..
Maybe use the closed down Microsoft stores
Which all seem to be barren wastelands even on product launches...
Someone in the press engineering a test for a predetermined outcome
never heard of that before... (not). Pretty much everything on the internet is exactly the same. Journalists routinely have agendas. This one got caught out by logging software oooppsie...
Microsoft couldn't sell them in the initial countries with typically loads of disposible income, instead they are trying to offload them elsewhere instead....
The company that invented HTML5, CSS and other things everyone takes for granted on the web, are now also working on pushing Webkit forward.
How can anyone spin that into a negative?
Re: Another one down
What;s Google got to do with this?
Opera have CHOSEN to adopt Webkit, nobody forced them (well the lazy developers that only bothered testing with webkit actually forced them), but it's not really Google's fault.
All you have ended up doing is looking like a nutter that hates Google automatically, because Apple or Microsoft told you to hate them.
Re: How does this help Opera's market share?
"Besides, maybe not everyone requires that functionality in the browser. Better to leave it slim and provide optional installers than let it get bloated."
Chrome download: 45MB (basic browser)
Firefox download: 20MB (basic browser)
Opera downlad: 10MB (browser, mail client, IRC, RSS, bit torrent and loads more).
Yep, you seem like a real expert who I can trust.....
Didn't Microsoft cut back manufacturing numbers for Surface Pro a few months back?
Perhaps they wanted the Nintendo style sellout hype to work for them too, where you can sell any old crap to Americans too stupid to see they are being played.
"Only Blue isn’t a new version of Windows. Instead it is the name given to a raft "
They are going to need a raft. All their main ships have already sunk. It has better be a big raft, so that big sweaty balmer has enough room to runaround on it..

Nowhere does it clarify which planet this survey was conducted on.
It clearly wasn't planet earth....
You can add the feed in Google Currents.
You can even add the whole article body too, with some clever Yahoo Pipes magic.. :-)
Already failed in the US FTC investigation
"Many of Google's competitors, including a bruised Microsoft, have long complained that the ad giant favours its own services over its rivals' products in web search results"
This was proven to be untrue in the US, and almost certainly fail here too (as otherwise, the EU will look like they are in Microsoft's pocket, as nothing is different this side of the pond).
It's just sour grapes from Microsoft, who suck at most things these days...
What's interesting, is the EU were involved in the US investigation anyway
"The Commission would like to acknowledge the close cooperation in this matter with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition"
So the likelihood of them coming up with a different outcome is slim to none.
Microsoft in channel stuffing shocker.
Nothing new here. Every new hardware product, they stuff the channel to make numbers look what shareholders expect.
The idiots are those than believe it...
I'll take 10 of them.
and pocket a cool £1500 and then throw them in the bin....
Oh, you mean they aren't paying me £150 each to take them??? Damn, there goes my plan....
Same Microsoft shitstirring as got threw out in the US.
Lets see if EU are in Microsoft's pockets....
Re: Could be worse
Perhaps he did. Haven't they only sold about 350 in total?
It has LTE (which few people have) but us twice the price of a nexus4, much worse specs and a dire app store
I can't see this setting the alight.
Re: Home users still pay for office software?
Standard documents, or microsoft standard documents? BIG difference.
I have never had a problem reading any word document, regardless of the version of MS Office it was written in. I use Google Docs (now Google Drive), and it just works, and the concurrent document editing and collaboration is superb.
Home users still pay for office software?
http://docs.google.com Price: FREE
http://www.openoffice.org Price: FREE
http://www.kingsoftstore.com Price: FREE
http://www.libreoffice.org/ Price: FREE
http://symphony.lotus.com Price: FREE
http://www.oxygenofficepro.com Price: FREE
http://www.zoho.com/ Price: FREE
Some of them might not include things like macro languages, but how many home users use that??? ALL of those are suitable for 99.999% of home users. Sorry Microsoft, like Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Xbox, Surface and Zune, you are simply out of touch...
Re: Pay Pal, an alternative spelling for ...
What are you doing that makes this a problem?
Full Freeview lineup would be nice first.
Vast swathes of the country can't even get the full UK Freeview channel lineup, shouldn't that be a priority first?
Yes, because you paid for a subsided phone. Unlocking before the end of the contract period is the same as stealing money.
Are all Americans this stupid?
From the country that brought us the Xbotch360 RROD
comes the new Boeing 787 skyburner.
God bless Amoreica
Clearly it's not a cold call, you are on their database, as you are a customer. ...
Re: Use Netflix..
You might as well cancel NetFlix and just download everything from Bit-torrent, it's just as illegal....
Consumers don't want it.
Microsoft are a dying breed, Their products are irrelevant now and consumers are voting with their wallets. Their dubious buiness practices of years gone by have now come back to bite them in the ass.
Nobody wants Windows, Xbox, Zune, Surface, Windows Phone etc. Consumers are WAY to wary of their lock-ins,
Sorry Apple Lovers
Your favorite designer fruity status symbol company has lost it's mojo and are running around releasing any old shit, in the hope that some of it sticks.
They have no answer for Android. Android beats them in features, performance price and style at the top end, and value at the bottom and mid end. There is an Android for you, regardless of your requirements (big screen or small, waterproof, drop proof, keyboard or touchscreen, you name it, there is one).
The same is now happening on tablets too, the latest 7in Android tablets piss all over the iPad Mini, as does the 10in Android tablets over the iPad, and not only are they better, they are also cheaper too.
Re: OI! Random Fanboi!
Funny, because when I switched on my Nexus4 and signed into Google account, it automatically syncd the following for me.
SO what was your point? Google do the cloud WAY better than Apple does.
Re: Must surely be game over for Windows Phone
Yeh, because limited stock MUST mean everyone is buying it...
Honestly, I thought the human race had evolved since the Nintendo Wii launch stunts, but clearly not....
Have you been drinking the Brawndo ?
Apple's true colors yet again..
It's all coming out how corrupt Apple really are...
Re: Microsoft tastes OWN medicine
The difference is of course, Microsoft are the first ones going crying to anyone they have in their pocket, when it's their turn.
Presto is a great engine, one of the best infact. The ICE demo looks really nice. I am wondering if they need to use WebKit for iOS (because of lame Apple rules), but it will use Presto on everything else???
Either way, NOTHING is official, it's all hearsay from a single site (the same site that claimed Facebook for about to buy Opera).
I wouldn't trust too much.
What I do trust however, is Opera will do the right thing for it's userbase (250m users), and I don't care if that means WebKit, Presto or Trident (LOL...)
I'm sure the handfull of real Windows Phone users are delighted
They can buy a £400 3D printer to print a £2 case...
Is this how bad it's got? Microsoft trying to create "cool factor" with their failed products? It's Kinect all over again....
As long as my RTL F1 broadcasts are still FTA
All is good... I can live happy without the dirty feeling of lining Murdoch's evil pockets.
Re: Once again El Reg's commentards prove themselves completely divorced from the real world.
I'm guessing you havn't seen the dire Suface sales figures then....
Lol, you really believe that tripe don't you.
Nobody I know owns windows phone, you never see them out and about either.
It's a total failure.
