plus EU import duty
for non EU goods.
There are far too many idiots that think it's the manufacturers that are at fault for overpriced US-EU conversions, and think it's just a case of converting the exchange rate.
All the prices they quote are always US excluding sales tax, yet ours include it, and they also fail to take into account the taxes levied on companies that want to sell in the EU but manufacture outside of it. Both of these together are in the region of 30% of the selling price.
Still it's the easiest way to spot an idiot....
Sony, Kobo, Nook and the other 176 EPUB based readers all use EPUB with Adobe Digital Editions DRM, their content is interchangable.
That means you can buy books form
and many more. Many of these also have deals. There is also 4x the content on EPUB (3m books), Kindle has about 750k according to Amazon.
Really I don't understand why anyone with a brain would buy a Kindle, as the Kobo is not only cheaper, it's better, it's more open and has more content.
RIM's problems go from bad to worse...
Once the buisness mobile, then the chav mobile, now the porno channel.,
RIM are done for.
Who got screwed?
Not me, I have had 5 years of unbelievably great gaming, Blu-Ray, 3D, loads of IPTV features, many added since new, all free.
The only people telling you that you got screwed, as the ones that benefit from you thinking that (Microsoft usually).
This whole gaming generation has been about Microsoft using every tactic possible to try and get a foothold and make gamers think that the PS3 isn't as great as the PS2 was.
The reality is, the formula that made the PS2 so fantastic was applied to the PS3, and the only losers are the gamers that can't see that or refuse to believe it, and actively go out of their way to play on inferior systems and pay to play online on laggy P2P networks.
Of course Microsoft have recently refocused their viral marketing target, as the Xbox now has a foothold, but the EXACT same tricks are being used to try and get Windows Phone 7 a foothold on which to build. Take a look at the "badmouth Android on twitter and win a Windows Phone" bribery to see how publicly desperate and low Microsoft are.
the 5 GENUINE Win Phone 7 users will love it.
As anyone that's not rewritten history will know that GeoHot was using the Hypervisor to try and break the PS3 in Jan 2010 well before OtherOS was removed.
OtherOS was removed in firmware 3.21, released April 1st 2010
If you are upset about this, GO BLAME HIM.
WP7 needs a full wipe and factory reset.
if you get this SMS. That is a remote exploit. It's great fun, in the unlikely event you know someone with a Windows Phone.
You can also bet this is just the tip of the iceberg, and more exploits will be discovered on a weekly basis, just like Windows...
NPD is NORTH American only. i.e. United States and Canada, which is why both these companies love to quote NPD in everything, as it includes a vast proportion of sales that buck the global trend.
How hard it it to comprehend?
"The NPD Group, Inc. (formerly National Purchase Diary) is a leading North American market research company. "
So bribing users
to make up stories about Android malware to win a phone that they can't sell for love or money isn't bribery and it's not viral marketing?
What planet do you live on?
This is almost as low as Microsoft have ever sunk (in public at least, most of their usual viral marketing, as I guess you know, happens undercovers).
All the while
the world is watching Windows Phone spectacularly fail, and we are all laughing our socks off and Microsoft and Nokias desperation...
I'm guessing by everybody
you mean everyone at the Reading campus...
Looking at the number of Microsoft shills here in maximum protection mode, it's scary how much viral marketing they are flooding the interwebs with.
Good job there are still SOME of us immune to it.
he forgot to tick the Anonymous Coward tickbox, and one of their hundreds of MS shill accounts just got compromised.
Too bad they didn't use Opera, Chrome, or Firefox, as it would take 10 seconds to make an extension that ticked the AC tickbox as standard.
Ironic that WP7 has just been hit my a remote exploit malware that means you need to hard reset your phone.
I don't think it gets any more EPIC FAIL than that.
WOW EPIC FAIL
on the same day Microsoft launched it's viral hate campaign against Android on twitter using it's army of braindead marketing drones bribed with the chance to win a WIndows Phone 7 that had the shop dust brushed off of it...
If you ever actually tried booting a full Linux desktop on it (I did), you would know how useless it really was... Like running Ubuntu 11 on a Pentium2. It was RAM limited, and running through a hypervisor, took about 60 seconds to boot to the desktop, and Firefox ran like a total dog.
Sure there were academics and military uses for the incredible numbercrunching potential of the cell, and ran a base kernel and basic shell, but nobody that wanted to use PSN would ever need that.
The whole thing IS/WAS a storm in a teacup, and the tech media should be ashamed of making it out to be anything else. El-Reg were big players in hyping this up, and in doing so destroyed their credibility for a very long time afterwards.
It was never an advertised feature.
Show me a TV advert or anything on the box that pushes it as a feature. YOU CAN'T... About the most I have ever seen was a 1-liner mention of it in the handbook and a very naff community website to support it.
It's a bonus feature, and it was withdrawn the moment GeoHot used it to try and crack the system open for piracy.
Extreme desperation from Microsoft...
Anyone else, you wouldn't believe it. Microsoft, you can totally believe it....
Here you go. some INDEPENDANT results...
They left out Opera, which has historically had the best security track record of them all... Seems like an intentionally knobbled set of results.
How can they claim that when Google sponsored it, and they excluded a browser that sits of the tree for security, that it's impartial. Here are some results based on the real world...
Google Chrome 159 - http://secunia.com/factsheets/Chrome-2011Q2.pdf
FireFox 72 - http://secunia.com/factsheets/Firefox-2011Q3.pdf
Internet Explorer 25 - http://secunia.com/factsheets/IE-2011Q3.pdf
Opera 36 - http://secunia.com/factsheets/Opera-2011Q3.pdf
80% for real?
for a console that plays at sub-optimum resolutions, needs a top notch broadband, costs £70 for the hardware, then top-dollar for the games, plus a pricey uncapped broadband package....
Is this some kind of joke? Did someone accidentally put a 0 on the end of the score? Or has someone fallen so in love with the IDEA of streaming gaming, that they are willing to ignore the obvious problems...
Every iPhone upto the 4s has Carrier IQ included as standard. Apple so far are the ONLY manufacturer to force it onto users.
All the other installs of Carrier IQ were not done my the phone manufacturers but by the networks...
Fantastic reader + more content than Kindle + no lockin
Kobo has 3m titles up for grabs vs Kindle's 750k.
With identical hardware to the £89 kindle, but £20 cheaper, more content and NO lock-in, it's a no brainer surely?
known as Opera Turbo, is disabled by default, and only really intended for slow connections (it compresses images on the fly sending you compressed WebM versions of them).
Whilst it may not work for you, it's not on by default and works very well for many...
"To highlight the amazing data compression powers of Opera, we posted a real-time counter on the opera.com home page showing how much data we were saving our more than 140 million users around the world. The counter was live from November 2 to December 2. In that month, the total amount of data saved was a massive 7.5 billion megabytes!"
Elephant in the room again.
That PS3 there, costing less than most of these, offering more including streaming and DVR functionality, gaming, movies on demand, Lovefilm, Mubi, Wbe browser, Blu-Ray etc etc etc...
However it's Microsoft
so it's likely they have their own software on it thats MUCH worse...
I would love to know how much Apple will be paying Samsung for lost revenue over these false claims.
Going by how much Sony got from LG over the 3 week PS3 ban which earnt them $30m, i'm guessing it's not going to be cheap at all....
Some serious egg on face from the Apple crowd here today.
Their holier than thou approach has turned sour as it transpires every single iPhone ever made (with the possible exception of the original iPhone) has Carrier IQ build right in as standard regardless of which network you bought your phone from, or which country you live in:
iOS 3: /usr/bin/IQAgent
iOS 4 and 5: /usr/bin/awd_ice2 or /usr/bin/awd_ice3
This is clearly much worse that the situation where SOME Android/Blackberry/Nokia/WebOS phones had it....
That said however, the whole thing is yet another storm in a teacup... But it makes me laugh when iPhone "protectors" are made to look like total retards yet again.
LOL, what an idiot...
Fancy making himself look such a fool with public statements like this that will come back to haunt him....
Lots of people like the idea of Siri
However they don't really use it.. I mean nobody wants to look even more of a dickhead than iPhone owners already look, by talking into Siri whilst walking down the street/sat in the park etc...
Unfortunate, but it's not really Loveflims fault.
Blame the Movie studios pressuring them.
I'm guessing they don't want to be moving to a soon-to-be-axed Silverlight platform either, but their hand is being forced. If they want to compete with Netflix with regards to streaming content, then don't have any choice.
As clearly if you have a decent Android handset, why would you want to massively downgrade to a Windows Pho 7?
If you have an iPhone, surely the task is to move up, i.e. to a mid-high end Android handset, rather than downgrade to a Windows Phone 7..
And if you have any Android you can already run a Metro UI copy if for some insane reason you want people to think you were stupid enough to be the only person to have actually bought a Windows Phone 7... Search the Android marketplace for Metro Launcher...
Really don't get the point of this.. I can't see anyone thinking, "wow, look at the non-customisable MetroUI, I want me some of that..."
You have been able to put apps into folders on Android for AGES.
Android 1.5 introduced it.
This really highlights how little some people actually know about Android... Like the fact that if they don't like the ICS look, it can be changed entirely into something you do like...
Launcher Go with Transparent Theme for example:
Or if you prefer, plenty of others
Wow iPhone 4s obsolete already?
Surely record time....
Perhaps users are disgruntled because nobody can tell they have upgraded, because it looks the same as the iPhone4...
You know how those "creative" types (baristas) are...
Something else for Apple fanboys to think is rubbish compared to their beloved fashion accessory (they are too stupid to understand a £100 Android phone and a £400 Android phone are not the same thing).
that Steve Jobs told everyone that Android was the porn-pad, and that you didn't get Porn on Apple..
Apple owners CAN'T defect, all their content is locked into Apple products forevermore.
Android owners can pick and choose which Android hardware supplier will be their next one, thus rewarding the best..
