Brit pair deported from US for 'destroy America' tweet

SirDigalot

faults all round

In this day and age saying anything that might be somehow interpreted at an attack on the USA will earn you a visit by some very very uptight people with very little imagination ( i think it is actually a job requirement or, like men-in-black they remove it when you are hired) these morons should of course not have said what they said tweeting or otherwise, however they are so overly sensative over here that it is not funny. Lack of imagination, and a healthy dose of panophobia, and a nosey disposition, are faults of this place. unfortunatly we are our own worst enemy, and easily distracted *ooo squirrel*

idiocrasy the move seems to be scarily close to what we will end up with eventually... though with a lot more fear involved. I think is we cannot be made to be scared of god anymore, (many still are but only on sundays) so we will be scared of the boogeyman, and over here they have not met the gel with the reassuringly big poker!

America abandoning DSL in favour of faster cable

SirDigalot

we had DSL for a while

when they had old dry pairs it was sdsl from telocity in chicago, 1.5/1.5 it was really quite good, then they went belly up and changed to another company they were ok too it was stil sdsl, then we moved, we got ATT DSL (Definitly Sh***y Lines) and it was aweful, after arguing with 'abraham lincoln' who lived in kentucky (Delhi) for an hour as to why i could not see my ethernet connect dsl modem in device manager, they realised they had given me the wrong package, (i got a call back from teir 2 or 3 or something an actual real honest to goodness english person in chicago to ge tthat sorted) then the fun started, we never got full rate, we were "on the limit" of distance, then it used to drop the line all the time... we gave up in the end, that linked with the crappy satellite TV that was always going out when it rained ( or a plane flew over) we went to cable, it cost alot more, lots and lots more lots and lots and many more! but at least we got a stable connection enough to satiate all 7 people using it ( 2 teenagers especially) we were in a pretty built up neighbourhood and everyone had comcast too, always got top speed never had an issue no matter what the time of day..

now we are in florida, oh dear, well it is stable, enough, cheap about ½ the cost of comcast... so can;t really complain... never wantto go back to dsl ever... however if verizon would expand to where we are i would drop cable in a new york second (which apparently is a very short amount of time)

when i left blighty i had NTL cable i think it was 512kb or something or something i was dead chuffed coz it saved me a few hundred quid a month in dial up charges!

NASA shuts off Voyager 1's central heating

one day..

when we invent/discover/buy from aliens some really fast effective way of traversing the local interstellar neighbourhood, I am sure we will go out and try and find these probes, and possibly try to return them, we know which way they are headed, we just have to catch up, we might also need to translate how to play the golden record too, or take a look in the 'historical archives'

I thought...

That they had sort of 'fixed' this with the old minidiscs and stuff, where you can set a copy bit, but i guess no one uses mindisc anymore :( also i thought they really did not mind you copying it to a tape or other analogue media since it is degraded and changed from the origional. now i do remember making copies of mix tapes and they really were bad (though that is also to do with the crappy twin tape portable thigns we had), and i thought that there was a way on minidisc again to degrade the copy or was this another format? my mind is a bit fuzzy.

I wish it was sensible to argue that a lossy recording is not the origional, (then again look at some of the 'artists' complaining, i would hardly call their origional great!) but since it can be copied exactly then i guess thats their beef with the whole thing.

as far as i am concerned now i am keeping all my music and implementing a sound proof room, just in case it is classed as a public performance... maybe i should just cut my ears off and everyone elses too...

The moment a computer crash nearly caused my car crash

SirDigalot

my previous car had an interesting issue, i would be driving along and all of a sudden all the warning lights would come on and the speedo/tach would stop working, sometimes the central locking would try to lock also, i kept taking it back to the dealer, everytime they checked even on a test drive, they found nothing, i told them that it sounded like a short somewhere as the issue was very random, but was shrugged off with the 'punters know nothing' look while smiling and saying "yes sir certainly sir, would sir like a coffee, this way to the waiting room sir" luckily they kept giving me a rental for nothing, so i didn't really care, but after a few months of this they had the car for nearly a week, they replaces the BCM which they thought was bad, they were about to throw in the towl and give me a new car, when the 'technician' saw some sparking by the firewall... oh my someone had forgotten to put in a grommet, and hence a couple of wires were shorting causing all the issues! they replaced the loom (under warranty) and i got my car back, it was mentioned in passing that it was what was suggested a few months before by me, but the subject was changed quick!

I bought a new car 2 months later, even though it suffered no problems after the fix...

i like having traction control abs and eba as well as a number of other safety features, while i never really have call to use them, (TC in the winter in chicago/midwest, though not nescassary, is very useful though it was fun to turn it all off in the parking lot and have a jolly good romp on the snow) brake assist scared the crap out of me when it engaged, a large truck decided he wanted to be where i am and pulled over, no signal (at highway speeds) i hit the brake quickly, not very hard but firmly (luckily there was no one riding my a$$ - yes, i did check first) and the car loses ALOT of speed real quick no skidding either. so while the best intention os to be fully aware of everything, sometimes you are caught by suprise, besides, without all the cool things and warnings and buttons to push you cannot pretend to be james bond in a traffic jam.

Secret US 'Jedi' ghost-copters kept out of bin Laden raid

judging by some of the other media reports on this chap, he has a little bit of a cross to bare with the current administration, not sure how or why nor do i care, but i guess we have to take his word as gospel, though, i am pretty certain none of the involved seals are really allowed to talk about things like this to ex military and were probably told not to mention certain aspects of the mission and technology due to them being classified and stuff.... but if he sells his books then good on him, no one said entertainment had to be truthful, even if he thinks it is himself

"A third of 8-to-15s who were on a social network said they were most concerned about the possibility of getting bullied online or that strangers could find things out about them."...

having been through some ridiculous homework with the kid that she got from her computer class in high school, apparently being bullied now consists of typing in their general direction, basically if you say anything but "hi" "hows the weather?" you are labeled a cyber bully, she had this questionaire that was sent home for the class, and basically all the answers i gave made me a cyber bully, they were generally phrased "have you EVER..." well of course i bloody have, if it takes you 20 minutes to get online (and stay on) back in the day you were not going to waste it by being nice were you! sheesh! I pointed out in the end, that much like a TV if you do not like what you are seeing....turn it off, they are not forced to go to social networking sites, or youtube or whatever the latest fad is these days, they do it by choice, and, quite often these days i choose to filter those sites for her because the drama is too much, your a kid fer christs sake, go out and squash insects or fight in the playground or something!

i feel like crying also...

we are moving to a different part of the good old USof A and the fastest offering they will be giving us in the new location will be a paultry 16/3, but i guess it is a price to pay for not having to deal with a midwest winter again, so now i am downloading all my downloadable content and games before i join the slowskis... however the bright side it the absolutely pathetic speed offering also means my monthly bill will be chopped by almost 2/3rds I wouldn't really mind but it is not as if we are moving to the arse end of nowhere.

who exactly

thinks up these prices? therecertainly is NOT 15k's worth of aluminium in those figures, and to be fair any modeler/scuplture-rer person would be able to sculpt them, of it is is not as if playmobile do NOT have the moulds to go on... so exactly where does the cost come from? maybe they meant 15,000 pennies... i wish i could get away with putting price tags like that on stuff...

now where did i put my $500 hammer again......

I agree,

When i was a wee nipper, i did not really think about it either, the louder the better, although things never seemed as loud in those days, i remember sony had their AVLS on the walkman and discman, i think most players have a similar thing these days to limit volume to "safe" levels, though buggered if i know where it is! My kids play their music way too loud, moreso the 14 yr old then the older one, though it annoys me they will be walking round the house with their earbuds in, even if the TV is on or they are doing something, always needing entertainment, very sad.

Now i am older with constant tinitus and partial hearing loss in one ear, i realise how dumb i was ( of course working in a blues club for a few years as a sound guy really did not help, with SPL at 120dba+ @ the sound desk and NO ONE in the club! (and the musicians got annoyed when i told them to turn it down) but i do attribute hearing loss to stupidity in youth too, no matter what i tell my kid though she never listens, we all know better at that age!
