@Alistair

I could only ask for one, as the Register only has an icon for a single pint. Perhaps this is time to introduce several pints for a "round of beers" icon.

I've returned to parts of Spain after a couple of years away, and some of the locals would remember me as "the englishman who could speak fluent spanish". So I think they and I share your sentiments!

Re: Risky business

Bike Balls is probably a safe bet when it comes to Kickstarter. It's a product that involves putting LEDs and batteries into a "ball sack" that hangs from your saddle (not that I'd want a pair). I'd only invest in two kinds of kickstarter projects:

1:

Simple things like BikeBalls. I backed Exploding kittens, and surprise surprise, they managed to deliver a cardgame that was promised.

2:

Complex/ambitious projects backed with a small amount of cash. Elite Dangerous was a good example: £20 for a piece of software as a deliverable. Had it failed, I could have wasted that money any other number of frivelous ways instead.

Paying thousands for things like that homebrew contraption really is leaving yourself open...

French Playmobil heist: El Reg denies involvement

ElectricFox
Boffin

To do a playmobil reenactment of a Playmobil heist, you would need Playmobil models of Playmobil. At 1:24 scale, the models of the models would be 1:576. The best way to recreate this off the shelf would be to see if you could get a model ship of 1:570 scale with people. Although 1:600 is more common as it represesnts about 1/10th of a nautical mile to the foot (new register standard for scale?).

Even then, it wouldn't be a Playmobil heist of Playmobil, but a Playmobil heist of Airfix...

PRINTERS ARE EVIL!

My mother-in-law had a wireless printer that failed to print every month. Her work-around was to re-install the software each time she wanted to use it. Turned out the software simply allocated a static IP address to the printer when it installed. She turns the printer off for a few weeks, and it is allocated a different IP address when she then turns it back on to print. I'm sure there's a nifty driver/software solution, but I just reserved a static IP address to the MAC in the router. That way, it should work with any other devices that she wants to use it with in the future.

I didn't want any reward, as harmony with the in-laws is priceless!

ElectricFox

A more fair trial...

...would be 5 F-35 competing against 30 or 40 A-10C, accounting for the cost of purchasing and maintaining those numbers of aircraft.

Reported on the BBC today: the UK is reducing the F-35 B orders from 36 per carrier (72) to the two carriers "sharing 12" (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-34077719). I'd hate to be going to the Falklands in 1982 with 12 jets. Two Harriers were lost in a mid-air collision in that conflict. That would be 1/6th of your F-35 jets wiped out.

The new Falcon Heavy: MOST POWERFUL ROCKET since the Apollo moonshots

Or in English

A 747-400 with GE engines gives 2.76 kNorris of thrust. So this rocket's thrust is equal to ~41 kNorris. I don't think that a 747 thrust would make a good Register standard unit as there are too many variations and configurations of the aircraft. This might lead to confusion.

Wow, 185.0642 pieces of Linguine, or 2.8104 Double Decker busses weighing in at 15.5 kJubs

But only 0.1874 times the length of a Brontosaurus according to the Register's automated online standards conversion calculator, which puts a single Brontosaurus at 15 Double Decker busses (just under 140 Metres). I know that the Brontosaurus is a misclasification of Dinosaur, but the Wikipedia redirect puts this species (Apatosaurus) as averaging 23 Metres in Length. Could there be a reference I'm missing here, or is there a fundemental problem with the Register SI measurement system. Such a glaring error would surely throw the commentard community into chaos!

Re: When will we take mental health seriously?

I've spoken quite a bit to a couple of relatives who are professors of mental health at a university. They both say that bipolar disorders and depressions are impossible to treat without drugs. The chemical inbalances are insurmountable by any amount of support and motivation for the sufferer. This will be the 10% of cases you're talking about.

The bottom line is that society really needs to remove the stigma attached to mental health disorders.
