Interesting

Sony thinks that the total lifespan of the PS3 will be 10 years.

I find this quite interesting, the PS2 hung on for quite some time after the release of the PS3. Maybe this will herald a new way forward for Sony - I wonder if they will consider marketing the successor to the PS3 along side the previous iteration. Kind of the same thing Nintendo and Sega did between the 8bit and 16bit era. This would be especially good if Sony continues down the route of "no backwards compatibility" (I could be wrong about that...).

@sabroni

I think there is already some support for additional screens with the 360. I think there is an app you can install on your tablet or smartphone that allows you to use it as a secondary screen for some games. Forza Horizon is one that supports this, I think.

Re: VCD's

@Michael Dunn

I do, if memory serves wasnt that part of an interactive project with the BBC?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was a BBC Master hooked up to a LaserDisc drive, probably due to the amount memory needed to store so much data.

Re: VCD's

I agree, Video CD's were a massive thing in the far east. You could get genuine copies of pretty much all the major films released over the last 25 years in this format, Video CD players were standard in a lot of homes in Japan for instance.

Before the advent of DVD, I remember buying quite a few films on Video CD - and not pirated ones either, genuine, licensed by the studio copies. I still have one or two at home now.

The format was so popular in Japan that there were a number of consumer devices that supported the technology, such as the Sega Saturn. The PlayStation also had a number of third party adapters that allowed them to be played on the console.

Just because they didn't take off over here doesn't really make them a fail. Instead the way they were marketed in the west should be the fail.

Assassin's Creed 3 game review

1Rafayal

I have enjoyed all of the AC games immensely from the beginning. However, I feel a little jaded that they have gone to the US for this one.

Of course, it had to happen at some point, it just feels to me that there are so many other places and points in history that could have given a much more satisfying backdrop for anyone who isn't from the US. Take Scotland for instance, Edinburgh and the surrounding areas have a very deep rooting in the Templar mythology as well as the south of France and India etc.

However, I am sure this entry in the series will be just as riveting as the last four games, I will even give Liberation a go as well (was suitably impressed by Uncharted on the Vita).

Re: Job requirements

I remember this myself. I left Uni in 2001, and went for pretty much anything that had graduate or junior in the job title only to be told I didnt have enough experience.

I went in the hard way and worked in a call center for a year before finally getting into a job relevant to my degree.

In order to make sure I would find work in the future, I decided to specialise. Thankfully these days people are after my skills, which keeps the wolf from the door.

Sky squeezes even more money from customers, gets fewer new ones

1Rafayal
Unhappy

I think that the happy times for companies like Sky are soon to be over.

Take me for instance, I am a Spurs fan (for my sins) and want to watch Spurs on TV when possible. But I dont want to shell out £40 a month for the privilege of being able to watch the golf in 3D, Right now, Spurs offer Spurs TV Online for about £50 a year, it gives you additional commentary and access to live audio, no live matches.

I, personally, would be more than happy to pay a little extra if it means I can get live matches from them than Sky. And this leads me circuitously to my point: I dont need all the extra crap that comes with the sports channels on Sky, I am happy to pay for access to just my clubs matches and noone elses. The same could be said about F1, I dont want the rest, just the ability to watch the F1 and I am happy to pay a fee to do so.

In the past, we had to get all the right packages in order to qualify for what we want, ending up with paying more out each month for stuff we just dont need. Surely it is about time that people like Sky can offer simplified channel packages that are streamed over the Internet?

Resident Evil 6 game review

1Rafayal
Meh

I am getting a bit tired of people saying that RE is no longer "survival horror".

No, it isnt the same as it was in 1996 - but isnt that a good thing? Capcom wanted to move away from the traditional RE format as soon as the end of the '90's (Devil May Cry started out as a sequel apparently). the 4th, 5th and now 6th iterations of the game have changed and evolved the whole game over the last few years.

Also, Capcom has to sell games to make money, if people do not want to play games like the first three versions of RE, then Capcom wont make money. If more people want to play games like RE5 then of course Capcom are going to keep making games like that.

IMHO, RE has definitely lost the shock factor and the scares. When you compare it to the Dead Space series, there is something definitely missing. But, at the same time, I personally like the action and pace that has been introduced, makes the story more compelling.

Part of me thinks that Capcom have created RE6 in this mish mash format to gauge exactly what the public want to see in the next iteration, be it a sequel or a complete reboot.

Valve's Half-Life

I remember reading a review for this in PC Gamer, one of the parting comments mentioned you should play this on hard the first time. So I did, took me ages to complete this game on that setting, but it was very rewarding to play.

4K vs OLED: and the winner is...

I have been looking at a new Toshiba TV recently, mainly due to its ability to show 3D without glasses. As it happens, it is also a 4K TV.

For me, the definition of a set would be driven by whatever the latest video games console is. If the Wii U supported 4K, or either of the new consoles from Microsoft or Sony, then I would go get a 4K TV. But thats just me.

Wouldnt mind getting a 4K monitor though, that would be a nice replacement for my HD monitor.

Re: Jobsian Cult

this is probably one of the silliest things I have ever heard a Cultist come out with.

Do you really believe that Apple commands 70% of the MP3 player market? Everything plays MP3's these days - its nothing special. My bloody TV plays MP3's from a UPNP server, memory card etc.

I am surprised that Samsung haven't hit Apple with a lawsuit, as if I recall correctly, wasnt it Samsung that was first to market with a mobile phone that could play MP3's way back in the 90's?

Sounds like prior art to me...

1Rafayal

Re: Jobsian Cult

That's hardly the defacto standard. It's a standard de jour. Apple will not be able to compete in the consumer electronics market when faced with the likes of LG, Sony and Samsung...

1Rafayal

Re: Jobsian Cult

I somewhat disagree with the idea that all the easy pickings are gone.

Apple probably wont be able to compete against the like of Sony, LG and Samsung in the future when it comes to adding devices to a home network that contains a telly and other proprietary devices. Sony in particular will be very keen to lock people into a specific ecosystem where customers mobiles, games consoles and TV operate as part of a personal media network.

The Jobsian Cult doesnt have a successful video games console or a booming display presence - it needs to get them from people like Samsung. All the Cultists have at the end of the day is iTunes and a communications device.

The Church of Google doesnt really care how you get Android, as long as you can get it, a bit like an STD

1Rafayal

Jobsian Cult

I have a book on my desktop called "Lean Software Development", basically it tells you to find a pattern that works and stick with it for the win. Its a concept that has been taken from the manufacturing industry.

Looks like Apple has also consumed this for the Jesus Phone. You dont have to the a most cynical opponent of the Jesus Phone to start noticing that there is very little of the famed "innovation" commonly associated with this Holiest of Relics anymore. So much so that Apple is now resorting to getting other companies into court to battle over whether or not their device looks a little bit like the Jesus Phone.

Now, I am pretty much guaranteed a protest by mentioning that Android is more like the "Muhammad Phone", and I am pretty sure that any Reg hacks who use that term would be stoned within hours.

To end on a lighter note, I think it would be fair to brand Windows 8 Mobile as the "Scientology Phone".

Re: re: Onscreen Keyboards

I actually agree with you on this.

Personally, I prefer a physical keyboard - but that is because my fingers are fat and I am constantly having to correct myself on a 10" tablet.

However, on a 7" tablet, I dont have this problem.

Keyboards are an entirely personal and subjective preference, clearly noted by tablet makers who are ever increasingly offering an official keyboard add on for their devices.

Agility without anxiety

1Rafayal

Agile is a great idea

but, a lot of organisations only pay it the barest of lip service in order to attract candidates as potential recruits.

I have worked in a number of places now who have attempted Agile in different ways. I think the best approach I encountered was where the organisation chose to adopt a best of breed method, taking the bits of Agile, Lean and XP that worked for them - and it did.

Recently, I have worked with an organisation where hiring managers were instructed by their peers to make a big play for Agile, but at the same time reinforced that software development would continue to be a bespoke waterfall methodology because "it works". We ended up with a lot of talented developers and analysts who had been working under Agile for a few years all of a sudden stuck in a prehistoric waterfall environment.

In my experience, when organisations want to use Agile purposefully, it works. When they just want to pretend they are doing it, then it doesnt. It amuses me that when organisations have their software being developed in a waterfall methodology complain that the brand new Agile tools they have just bought dont work the way they want them to.

I am a big fan of Agile and always try to introduce elements of it where ever possible.

As an aside, I used to consult for a startup whos director complained that unit testing was pointless. To quote him; "Why should I write a test, then write the code to fail the test before I start development?". Hmm, I wonder.

Why oh why can we not just have one sensible discussion regarding something like Linux or free software without it turning into some form of religious pogrom?

1Rafayal

Re: What prevents Linux from conquering the consumer PC market?

I am not so sure about the average user comments.

A lot of people seem to be saying that Windows 8 will be the death of desktop computing, especially for games and media. YouTube works fine on Linux, well the distributions I have used anyway.

These days we have Linux everywhere, in our cameras, in our phones, our tellies and STB's etc. It is a gloriously flexible platform. When it comes to games, its a bit light at the moment, but with people like Valve aiming to put Steam on Linux, things can only get astronomically better.

I think the idea of "Linux works for me, but not for the average consumer" doesnt really ring true these days anymore. Most people are clued in enough to understand what Linux is and use it. I think the question these days is "Linux works, but what can I do with it?". Until that question is answered, I guess the Linux user base will be smaller than the Windows user base.

surely he should be in a position to prove that his code was being sold with a commercial license before throwing his rattle out of the pram though? Shouldnt he also confirm that the version of his code that is being sold does not come with a copy of the source?

Plus, if this were proven to be the case, isnt the author allowed to take whoever it is selling his code to court under breach of copyright?

The article kind of reads that he heard someone may have been up to some thing and got all shirty, prompting my comments. Does the guy really think people wont try things out, or in the case of selling his code, try and make money off the back of someone elses work?

1Rafayal

So this chap is upset that other people have forked his code and even gone on to resell it?

Sony PlayStation Vita sales crawl

If Sony are planning to turn the Vita into some type of Wii U controller thing, then this could get interesting. Personally, I dont think there will be a difference between a portable console and a home console in the future (not near future, just generic future).
