Give in to data centre automation and change your life

Joe 48

UCS Director

I've had some hands on time with this in the past 12 months and the potential is amazing. I certainly don't want staff installing ESXi or adding service profiles to blades. Simple admin tasks should be automated imo. No techie wants to watch an ESXi install, especially on large scale deployments.

Regarding my recent experience. From the point of physically putting a blade into a chassis, to it being online in the cluster with VM's running on it is around an hour. The only user input is assigning a name/IP and putting in the blade. The rest was automatic. Too many people assume its their jobs on the line, when in fact they are now doing much more interesting work and rather than fighting fires are ahead in so many areas. Its made a huge difference.

Complex to setup, yes, but worth it. Add in a little, cough "ITIL" cough, incorporate it with processes and procedures so it all hangs together.

There are two rules to automation. 1. If you are going to do it more than once automate it. 2. Assume you are going to do it more than once.

How good a techie are you? Objective about yourself and your skills?

Joe 48

Unqualified

Move to the UK. I'm in the middle of what, I at least, consider to be a successful, or at the least enjoyable career in IT. Yet I've never even looked at any sort of degree or university course. In fact based on my terrible grammar it could be argued I'm completely uneducated....

I love my career, not so much my current employer but you can't win them all. I'm working in a field that means what I do really does save life's. The fact I never see it is the only thing that bugs me. I'd love to know what happens to the data that passes through the systems I build/maintain.

Regarding getting a job. When I'm in positions where I need to have staff I always ask one question. Describe to me your home IT setup. The more geeky it is, then the more that person has a passion for IT and that passion imo is worth more than any qualification you can get. If they have passion they will learn. Generally this has worked well for me over the years.

Above all else a job isn't worth your health. If its getting too much get a generic 9-5 job that pays the bills, where you can switch off at the end of the day, turn IT back into a hobby.

Problem Still is

The worry with all this is, I'm not sure the public care enough. Or they don't appear to.

The only place I hear people complaining about their rights are on tech forums.

Nvidia U-turns on GTX 900M overclocking after gamer outrage

Joe 48

Re: Laptops

@linicks

I agree overclocking is pointless in a notebook. The performance gains are minimal, at best. However gaming on modern notebooks is surprisingly good. I get just shy of 10,000 in 3d Mark 2011 pushing 9,756 on mine. So although its not the absolute best for gaming, it's incredible what this thing can do!

I travel but I like to get my gaming fix whilst on the road, or more to the point bored in the hotel room. The laptop ticks all the boxes for this. Ample performance, slim form factor and not bad looks. Its certainly no brick either. Check out the MSI GS range.

PlayStation Network blasted offline AGAIN. Just not Sony's decade

Joe 48

Re: Pissing off the wrong people.

You say low security network, but I'd expect the likes of Sony and MS to know what they are doing when it comes to protecting my personal details. I don't think someone entering their CC details on a gaming site is any different to amazon, paypal and the like. I'd expect most people have used a CC at some point on line these days.

NetApp goes for a ride on VMware's EVO: RAILs

Joe 48

Confused.

Isn't the whole point of EVO-RAIL to be a more hyper converged modular setup, removing the need for separate storage you get in the converged setups? - Please forgive the converged buzz words....

As soon as you add external storage you turn it back into a Flexpod. Also steps all over VMware VSAN. Not quite sure what this achieves except show Netapp are clutching at straws to regain some market share they've lost this year and yet again going about it all wrong.

Another lick of Lollipop: Google updates latest Android to 5.0.1

Joe 48

I'm liking it

Love the new interface. Battery could be better (Try keeping the camera app shutdown), I can still use the old mail app and haven't been forced to use Gmail so unsure what the complaint is here.

Anyone getting 2 days off any modern phone either never uses it or runs a very aggressive battery save mode imo. 1 day seems to be the norm.

Ok its got some bugs but no more than normal imo for a first release of Androids new OS. They always have issues.

Pebble the Next RIM (Blackberry)

Just a thought but Blackberry was very good at being a corporate device, great for email, calling etc. With amazing battery life. They didn't change with the times and looked what happened.

Pebble should learn from this. Yes their device currently is very good at a few things. But the market is already shifting slightly and if they don't keep up they'll end up in serious trouble.

Just a thought.

Ok, so you didn't say you were running defaults, my bad. But you still imply its not that big a risk, when in fact it is.

Joe 48

Not for me thanks....

@Jediben

IP geolocation would worry me, not hard to locate someone from IP and getting more accurate all the time.

Add that to cameras around my house so they can instantly work out blind spots. Like the bathroom windows.

You can think of a lot worse with default passwords? I can't, leaving my home and family vulnerable is much much worse imo.

General non technical peoples ignorance I can understand, but you seem to grasp the problem, and yet still choose to ignore it. That imo is even worse!

Hope your pub gets resurrected again soon.

Joe 48

Doing my bit

I've just purchased a Pub and turned it into a house.

However, the Pub I purchased was in a lovely remote location in a small village. Unsure how this will help the high street, but I've got a stunning house!! Plus they had a another pub in the village so I still have a watering hole.

Win win!

Re: Facebook and Tor

I'm taking myself to the nearest police station right now, either that or phoning my Russian 'friends'.

Its been a fun debate and I can see your reasoning. Still, given the whole threads those comments aren't quite the same context at the first examples you posted, which were much more direct. I said I wouldn't joke about something serious, not that I wouldn't joke, as yes that would be complete tosh, I think you're taking it to the extreme a little, although I suppose thats the point you are making.

Either way in the full context everything I've ever posted on here I'd feel comfortable defending, assuming I don't get same defence lawyers as that Chap posted above!

Last post for me on this one as my down votes counter is back to normal levels and my Dad can't defend me right now, he's busy still beating the Dad from my comments a few months back.....

Joe 48

Re: Facebook and Tor

@ElReg!Comments!Pierre - I can't help stupid people. What did those people think would happen. I'm not stupid enough to joke about something that could be serious in the same way I won't walk into a bank with a plastic gun. I'm not a numpty!

@John - No I can't imagine being framed. To be fair I can't imagine being in a terrorist attack either. But I have seen Terrorist attacks happen. Can't say I've witnessed anyone being framed. Not to say it doesn't happen though. Googled Stagg. Again he did silly things in the effort to strike up a romance. Not nice what then happened as a result though and to be fair quite obvious looking at it now he wasn't guilty!

I think I need to reiterate I'm not all for mass surveillance. I just think at the moment it maybe is needed. In light of no better options. I agree lots with other peoples comments about policing it better and trying to restrict it in some way but I still think its a hard balance to get right. That at the end of the day is what my view comes down to. I can at least comprehend how difficult it is. Maybe I've seen things others haven't, maybe I'm looking at it from a different point of view. Just thought I'd at least put something else on here to show a different view point. Got everyone talking.

Joe 48

Re: Facebook and Tor

Are people really this paranoid about this happening? Ok so a few readers of Elreg are, but we're not exactly speaking for the masses. Most of us are geeky types who are most likely over thinking it all. Either that or your all so dodgy its untrue!!

I'd love to know what they'd gain by imprisoning me, so can't see an example of when this would happen. Yes If I was slightly dodgy, and they wanted an excuse to get me, they could, in theory, make something up. It all just seems a little too like something you'd see in a hollywood movie. Maybe they could go old school on my ass. Getting my fingerprints putting them on a gun, getting a body from the morgue and setting up good old fashion frame.

If everyone on here is that worried about this, the only thing I can suggest is you put down the mouse and keyboard and leave the internet alone. Unfortunately this sort of mass surveillance is here to stay, for now, no amount of us debating it here will change that. Unfortunately I don't think the general non tech savvy public, either know, or care enough either.

Waits for next random reason I'm going to get arrested for......

Joe 48

Re: @Joe 48 - Facebook and Tor

A very good example. I can see how it could happen, I still can't see it ever happening to me. Might be a blinkered approach, some will say an ignorant one, either way I'll take my chances.

I appreciate everyones views, concerns, worries, about what they say being used in someway to lock them up for eternity but will/does this happen, very rare I would say.

Heads off to post about my lunch on Facebook.... Interpret that how you will, its a tasty looking lunch!

Joe 48

Re: Facebook and Tor

Jeez, are people really this paranoid these days.

If my drivel is code, its damn good, because even I can't break it! If I'm ever arrested for a Facebook post I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.

As for the Err-Head comment, nothing constructive to add, so time for the personal insults. Bravo.

Joe 48

Re: Facebook and Tor

Its on Facebook.... Nothing, and I really do mean, nothing, gets posted that would be of any interest/concern. I'm in no doubt the Government are interested in what I post on social media though.

I always get in shot down on these topics as I still see what GCHQ do as necessary. Do they do it correctly, well thats the part open to debate, but as I've said before on these topics, damned if they do, damned if they don't. Personally I'd rather they air on the side of caution and collect more data if it means stopping an attack and saving a life, because lets face it for a minute, thats the main reason of all this mass surveillance, the internet is evolving, its such a unknown about how to react to it and I think its surveillance will be constantly changing.

Down vote away fellow Elreg commentards. My stats had almost started to level out.

Joe 48

Facebook and Tor

Facebook can now be fully access on Tor with nothing breaking out on to the open net. Other example of a company thinking about security for once. Of course you're still logged into Facebook though!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29879851

I'm still on the fence. Yes I understand people are worried about mistaken identity but on the flip side I want to know I'm safe and lets face it the world isn't all roses.

Hard balance to get right and one debate that will rage on for a long time.

I work on a simple principle. If I have something I want to keep private, I don't put it on the net. To be fair its very rare that I have something that private that I care about.

What I say on social media isn't going to get me into trouble as its just rubbish most of what I post. The rest is generally family stuff, photos etc, that I want to share with others. The internet is for sharing, and therefor imo has to be open by its very nature.

Hold onto your hats and follow the BYOD generation

Joe 48

BYOD - Security

Do these young people not realise they'll still be sitting behind a proxy. I'll still be monitoring all web access. I'll enforce the end points have up to date AV and the correct security patches before they are allowed on the LAN, and that even then access will be limited to certain systems only and a VDI will be used for the rest. Hell at least I'm saving company money and I'll still sack them if they don't work hard. BYOD just got more tempting!!!

Happy 2nd birthday, Windows 8 and Surface: Anatomy of a disaster

Joe 48

Re: Next up, Jony Ives?

Irony Deficient, thanks for replying. I've tried everything. It works fine in safe mode. However even with a full wipe and fresh install the issue is apparent immediately after the the first setup, with no AV or 3rd party apps installed. Hard to tell but even the reinstall seems slower than it should be 5+ hours, where as on my connection it should be around 2 hours for a circa 5GB download. So the issue is even apparent whist restoring the system.

I get the same issue in Safe Mode too, and I've spent too much time trying to fix it and Apple were no help whilst in warranty, a touch less help now its out of warranty. I do have the default Apple AV product XProtect running but never found a way to turn it off. Firewall off I've tried.

I'm beyond caring. At some point I'll replace it with a later model but I'll be damn sure I test both USB and Wifi first to ensure the 'bug' isn't around any more. Seems to be quite common on the Apple forums with early 2013 models.

Joe 48

Re: Next up, Jony Ives?

It gets worse.

On my Macbook Pro in all versions of Mac since Lion I get downloads that stall out after a few minutes and the worst USB copy speeds ever.
