Want to remotely control a car? $20 in parts, some oily fingers, and you're in command

Re: Not every car

VW has probably the most complex implementation of CAN bus - it's pretty ridiculous what is possible on VW cars with the right software and cables.

But you're entirely wrong about it being VW exclusive. It's on pretty much 100% of recent cars: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus

Not even particularly impressive stats either - the Sony Xperia Tablet Z was released 6 months earlier and is 0.6mm thinner. And on top of that it's waterproof and has a micro SD slot.

Re: I wonder if it's straightforward role reversal

Making the casing from metal is not a very smart move in a device with one or two large panels of glass

Samsung are right to use plastic. The galaxy s i9000 for example is ridiculously shatter resistant

Huawei Ascend P6: Skinny smartphone that's not just bare bones

Re: The important bit.

From experience with the ascend g300, huawei's software engineers are seemingly far more competent than those of e.g. samsung. Updates notwithstanding, they ship a good ROM with intelligent minor changes.

Nvidia buys Portland Group for compiler smarts

Compiler smarts?

Great, maybe now they'll stop compiling PhysX with absolutely no optimisation or cpu extensions to make the GPU mode look better and sell more cards.

Re: HDMI CEC

You're not entirely correct, my mid-range Sony TV is from 2009-ish and even features a full PS3-imitation XMB, yet its smart TV features extend no further than DLNA and some useless widgets. No fancy streaming services whatsoever, even with the latest firmware, but crucially it does offer CEC.

USB 2.0

Because, like with the VGA port, Sony realise there is still a huge number of devices on the market that go horribly wrong when plugged into a USB 3 port. And in a scenario unique to Sony's laptops, the reverse is true too (I'm looking at you, Fiio E17).

Re: Surely SSD purchasing goes like this:

This. I got my 256GB 830 for only £140 from Amazon when they fucked up the pricing of the 7mm notebook bundle version. Amazing drive.

Voodoo Sound

If this has the same WM8994 DAC as the original Galaxy S phone and Voodoo Sound is supported, it will be the best MP3 player on the market for sound quality and headphone power output.

And yet...

None of these compare (in terms of sound, build, comfort, value, everything really) to a good pair of Audio-Technica or Sennheiser headphones and a cheap desktop mic.

Folder playlists

Folder playlists are the main reason I bought this app. The sqlite database they are based on is trivial to edit (you can just do it in-app if you're not automating things of course) and, most importantly, doesn't reset itself like the stock android m3u playlists from media scanner on boot.

And the interface is really second to none. The only other music player with a theme that doesn't look distinctly outdated and horrible is the Samsung TouchWiz player, and it leaves a lot to be desired in pretty much every other area.
