Teardowns confirm $1,500 Google Glass hardware is DIRT CHEAP

Why Not?

Re: To be fair...

Of course that is why the customs teams & trading standards have such difficulty identifying good fakes.

The raw materials are similar, moulds are fairly cheap, cost of cheap plastic versus expensive plastic are only a few pence so if you are worried about being caught you might pay more for top quality fakes.

As per the article the frames were costed conservatively at $20 and top quality, so any glasses are probably a similar cost, To then cost new plastic glasses at £450 (as I was quoted for my last pair) seems like a generous mark up.

Its not like bespoke items its fairly easy to make good fakes of mass produced goods if you have a big enough market.

Never mind the HORSE MEAT, trading standards cuts'll hurt IT crowd, too

Why Not?

whilst I think cutting frontline trading standards is a very bad idea as there are a lot of aldulterated goods and dangerous fakes that need to be policed, the sale of Dodgy DVD's and under licensing seems to be something of a civil matter.

If M$ software is being under licensed they and Fast can afford to counter it with a civil case.

I only ever seem to get phone calls trying to sell me seminars and software licensing tools from FAST, this is despite working for a Global company with very tight control on licensing.

Battery vendors push ultracapacitor wrappers to give Li-ions more bite

Why Not?

The extending battery life I suspect is talking about service life as well, it will last longer in service as you aren't thrashing it. You are also using both power sources in their sweet spot. I assume there are some electronics built in to manage the draw on both. If you decrease the amount of aggressive discharge from the lion cell then you decrease the heating and the likelihood of the battery becoming a bomb.

From the description they aren't losing a great deal of space for the capacitor.

I think the truth will be in the discharge not the heating..

Re: Better is the enemy of good enough

A point I obviously didn't address fully enough in my post then?

I suggest you join the business you would fit right in.

Why Not?

Better is the enemy of good enough

I see so many business units that have a 'special way, that is so complicated you couldn't possibly understand it' of dealing with customers in basic tasks.

When you peel the onion, they aren't doing anything special that can't be done by the major ERP's / MRPs much better and with more standard add ons.Maybe they have one or two quirks used by 1% of the customers but these have very little effect on the bottom line or the potential to do so.

The real benefit is when you improve their process and make sure they serve their customers better.

And if you have thousands of sites it makes sense that every major tool is the same and supported by a Vendor or preferably multiple competing vendors rather than Dave from accounts.

Now there are some real niche tools that can affect the bottom line. An ex employee -> contractor wrote a tool that allowed us to report on customer units and charge a good whack for it. Now those are worth doing. However ordering, building, buying & invoicing its best to get off the shelf.

The problem is getting it across to the single business unit that they are 0.05% of the the profit so spending 10% of IT's time to increase their profit by 1% is a waste of time.

Sorry in biggish companies standardisation is the way forward. Now getting it right is more challenging and requires clever and motivated people, most of those left years ago when the accountants took over.

Also the business never appreciated the benefits of the one off's or the advice from IT as one guy said when I said - that is bad idea because of business reason X,Y & Z the order came down from on high 'just do it'. You guessed it XY&Z bit us in the rear. There followed a long weekend producing my original suggested solution and was greeted with 'well at least IT got it right at last'. Guess who got the payrise?

But if you do it with standard tools then you have to do it well, that means lightening fast networks, great support & applications that work properly, the funding for those is stored with the Unicorns.

Re: IR35 closing one man consultancies through fear and uncertainty

You might want to check out what "Umbrella Companies" do for a living. Check the Annals of the PCG for cases they lost and talk to a few ex contractors. Oh look a handy list and look the Tories were going to abolish it.

http://www.contractorcalculator.co.uk/ir35_history.aspx

It was part of my decision to close, shortly after a bunch of nice ICT chaps turned up at 30% of the cost we were. (We weren't actually charging a lot, much less than a backbencher's salary).

Of course despite being a tax avoider I was still paying more tax than the ICT chaps were earning.

So now you know someone!

Dear Dave

You know we have so many imported "IT experts" the wages have dropped significantly in the UK?

Combine that with IR35 closing one man consultancies through fear and uncertainty.

Only hiring large bodyshops stuffed with offshore and imported labour for government contracts.

Selling off every organisation to foreign buyers who then offshore IT.

So not sure what these experts are going to do except work in Starbucks?

Anyway if they are any good why would they start an IT business in the UK, you would be better off in Eastern Europe.

Darth Vader outs self as iPhone fanboi

Secondly, Star Wars is famously set “a long time ago in a Galaxy far, far, away”. If Vader truly did use an iOS device in that distant locale and time, Apple's various patent lawsuits against Samsung and others just got a whole lot harder to prosecute successfully.

No far from it, by exposing it was a long time ago then they have established that no 'prior art' from Samsung can exist. Now they will have to reveal that Apple are really a descendent of an evil Galactic Empire but all except Fanbois won't bat an Eyelid.

Re: Do what we want, not what we say

Indeed if only they had been in power 10 years ago when all this wholesale tax avoidance really took off they could have nipped it in the bud. Instead of waiting until the bust they fuelled and watching every large UK based tax paying firm fold because their competitors didn't pay VAT or Corporation tax or if Bodyshopping income tax or NI.

I mean the workers party allowing wholesale sale of the Tax offices to a tax haven or sending out search parties to get cheap workers to gerrymander would be unthinkable.

Thought you didn't need to show ID in the UK? Wrong

Why Not?

Usual government tosh.

There is a deposit scheme Landlords have to use. Its Government mandated and provided by the usual suspects.

https://www.gov.uk/tenancy-deposit-protection

If both the Landlord and the Tennant have to register with this and be verified (proper certificates, insurance, ID etc ) just like the DVLA do with cars and you extend it to hold deposits half the fraud, non compliance and identity issues associated with renting would disappear. The minimal fees required for this would be worth it for tenants and landlords.

Renting or subletting without using the deposit scheme would be illegal.

of course its easier to make the landlords take the blame for poor immigration control.
