Sys admin lets users root phones?

This article was nicely written, but seemed strange from the stand point of a sys admin.

1) The employees get a choice??

2) You disregard a phone (Moto) as they cannot root it and load whatever they want on it?

Sounds like a pretty forward thinking company

Mandela memorial. Yup, let's SNAP A SELFIE, say grinning Obama, Cameron

Compact101

What would Mandela want, people sitting there glum or people celebrating.

Dammed if the do, dammed if they don't.

Don't see you writing stories about the inappropriate street parties, carnevals etc that are happending across South Africa.

Rubbish Register story. I know you're a red top, but no need stoop to the Jeremy Vine level or reporting

Re: I'm not an Elmer - help me!

A question on the 4G

Do you often use it where you don't have Wifi and is it actually worth it over 3G, i.e. you really use your 4G and life without would be like being on Dial-up Modem.

I'm on a 300 mins, 300 txt, unlimited data £8.50+VAT plan.

Never use my mins, txt or that much data, as most of the data is FB, Maps, WhatsApp and a bit of web, with anything heavy normally coinciding with being when I'm near a free wifi at home, work coffee shop etc.

O2 tears wraps off £26-a-month mobe sport, music, games (and 4G)

Compact101

Lazy commenting, as I haven't clicked through to see the sport on offer.

But would be nice if 3 came along with an offering that was just football and/or pop music based.

I like climbing, mtb, snowboaridng etc.

I would be nice to select from a list of sports to receive, maybe something you can change everything month.

Videos, clips, news updates etc.

That would be more tempting to me than football.

Meh

I agree

I bought the Playbook, great piece of hardware. Ok software

But has now been left behind by the company.

I still use it to surf and watch movies, read books etc and would have considered the Z10 once it reached £300, but after RIM letting the Playbook die, I've decided to go with Android.

Currently waiting for the HTC One to reach £300 (or the Moto X), which should happen soon when the HTC One Mini and the Moto X are launched.

Unfortunately I now couldn't careless for RIM, which is a mighty change from championing it a year ago.

The report shows that total BBC turnover topped £5bn for the first time last year, with revenues reaching £5.09bn in the year to 31 March 2012, up from £4.99bn. Of this £3.6bn came from the licence fee, with 25.7m households due to pay the £145.50 compulsory annual levy

But Top Gear is worth it :)

Reprogramming??

Quite a lot of even semi tech savvy people re-program the menu's to the way they like.

I've been doing it for years and even my dad does it.

(Actually quick question, can this be done on Sky?)

As more tech savvy, mobile and internet using people come about, more will create their own menu options i.e. removing T4 wales and bumping Dave up the list :)

A woman in IT is like a dog who speaks: Rare. A woman in IT security?

Compact101

I work for a large International IT company any have many women on our projects in all roles.

Though I will admit the more geekier perceived the role, the less chance of finding women.

BUT...

We have plenty of Indian colleagues working both off & onshore and they have a good mix of both male and female working in all areas. So maybe just a Uk thing

Mobile gaming is definitely moving forward, but to say they will replace Consoles, is like saying that consoles were going to replace PC gaming.

Mobile gaming is in a different area to Console.

People like the large screen and handheld controls Consoles offer.

Maybe in the future the mobile will be the hardware that links up to the TV by cable or wireless and a contoller.

Salesforce CEO Benioff: Win 8 is 'the end of Windows'

Compact101

There may be less imputes to move from 7 to 8, but people still need computers with OS's.

And in the same way sites like this get all excited over the latest IOS, people still like to upgrade.

In the future though they probably won't pay do much to upgrade their own machine, as like he says OS's aren't as important as they used to be.

Of course hardware manufactures want the upgrade as it drives sales it the same way brown is the next black is the next blue.

Salesforce doesn't offer that upgrade cycle to hardware manufacturers, who advertise A LOT....

Like most of the above, I have used iGoogle as my home page for years now.

Great for quickly seeing, hotmail, gmail, evernote, weather and surf reports.

Quite miffed they are taking it away.

D-Link DHP-1565 802.11n router with integrated powerline

Compact101

At £100 a router, a pair would be a little steep for Powerline.

Better getting a decent router and a pair of the TPLink or Devolo's for around £60

I setup Devolo's in my parents house and they love the roaming 4/5 bars around the whole house, where before the iPad would drop out in half of it.

Samsung unwraps 17in Ivy Bridge beast

Compact101

Being on the road a lot, I want portability but performace.

Currently my T500 with 15.3inch screen is nice, but 17inch would be fantastic.

Be able to have 2 apps on the screen at the same time.

Would just have to see how much it weighs, real battery life and could I get it in my laptop bag :)

So steal the looks and weight of an Ultrabook, but give me the power, battery and screen of a laptop...

Europeans turn backs on Ultrabooks

Compact101

Some of the problems is that people have different requirements for PC's, which often overlap the silly group names.

I don't want a netbook, ultrabook, superbook or thebestestbook, I personally want a laptop, that is:

Powerful enough for: office, internet, watching video's, editing photos and occasionally editing video from snowboarding (games would be nice but I have a PS3).

Battery: I would like it to have 6hours of normal use, though I know it will be a bit heavier (if batteries were cheaper, they could come with a slim 3hr battery and stylish, but heavy 6/8hr one as I have on my work'slenovo T500)

Screensize: Large enough to use, all the grads get the manbag size 11 & 13inch and regret it after a while. I like to have a wide screen 15inch so I can have email and word open, or 2 excel docs, (or a video and firefox :) side by side for multi tasking and making life easier

I would like it to be stylish, sleek and not too heavy (when I think apple I think these, when I think PC, only Sony and some samsung come close, but then they are plasticy and break easy, all my perception of course).

But as said this is just me, I travel a lot in hotels most weeks, watch movies, use the internet, work with multiple docs, tools and screens.

The problem is the marketing, media and pigeon holing of machines. Really people prefer cheaper machines at the moment, possibly due to price or screensize.

Also if I am going to splash out, then might as well splash out on Apple as they make good stuff, that is nice to use, lasts and has good customer service, thus worth the higher price (which can be seen in the tablet and phone markets)

BangCd also have something similar.

When i email them, they replied that someone is sending out their emails to discredit them/get them on a banned list.

I receivea a couple a day.

Since they replied to my email quickly, I'm not going to cry over a few emails, espeically when they are aware of the problem and trying to go something about it.
