Apple blacklisted by Chinese consumer watchdog

Kebablog

Surprised?

For years mobile companies have supplied refurb units as replacements, so why all of a sudden are people getting pissed at Apple?

The IT industry have always used refurbished parts for repairs. As for 'you don't get to keep the old parts shit' I can't recall an instance where any manufacturer/retailer offered you the faulty bits back. Often the 'faulty' bits are returned to the manufacturer for repair/test or ultimately if it's completely fecked the bin.

Windows 8 'bad' for desktop users - Gartner's one-word review

Re: Another Vista?

I bow down to your superior knowledge.

Re: Another Vista?

Apologies, I meant the look and behaviour of windows has been the same since 95 to Win7 - the background stuff has changed completely. From a user perspective if you could use Windows 95 you could use Windows 7 (it had a start button and menus to nagivate) - now Windows 8 changes the front end that will lead to user problems.

Re: Another Vista?

Not really Vista. Vista was basically Windows 95 with a tarted up interface (and piss poor driver support), what Windows 8 seems to have done is go back to having Program manager from Windows 3.1 but with nice tiles.

HP Envy 4-1010ea 14in Ultrabook review

Facepalm

Not a bad looking device to be honest, but frankly let down by a poor resolution. The 11" MBA gets away with that resolution because of the size, but bump up the physical dimensions of the screen and it looks crap

To be fair it's not just HP - Lenovo are guilty of the same crime x220-t420-t520 all come with the same res, it's fine on the x220 but scaled up it's naff.

I'm sure some people will love it, but after initial testing it's not ready for a corporate deployment.

YouView launches with pricey premium DVR

Kebablog

"The trouble is, of course, a lot of folk own DVRs already. No problem, says the ebullient Sir Alan, this is the box their going to replace their DVRs with"

He's got a point, my Panasonic DVR is great, but isn't HD so this device (or future ones) is one to consider when I upgrade.

Re: On the other hand

Yes, you've achieved the right amount of 'Analyst Bollocks' in the post.

Re: It would be Tim Cook big second mistake at Apple...

"Also Apple has still not opened the iPod Nano to developers"

Could it be that the iPod Nano doesn't run iOS - it runs an interface that looks like it.

BT to fibre up another 98 exchanges, puffs 'FTTP on demand' offer

Re: Exchanges

It's not just lower density towns that get ignored. My area in Birmingham is listed as not being currently considered. We are however well served by Virgin - but I don't want them near my house.

Looks like I'll have to stick with my variable 4-5mb ADSL for the moment.

The Stechford (brum) exchange could do with a bit of BT love. We don't care too much about the size of cabs, you should see what Birmingham Cable (now Virgin) left.

I believe I'm on the up to 20mb service (but only get 5) but it looks as if my connection is down as well.

Annoying, but happy with Zen - as above they are good to speak to and generally things work fine.

Indeed, nice looking product let down by a poor resolution display.

Doubt they'll abandon Thunderbolt. It would be nice if both are included.

Anyway as for cheaper Macbooks, yes please - but digitimes aren;t exactly reliable.

Need a new channel!

'The standard laptop isn’t in the channel yet and wasn’t available for review'

Strange i've got one sitting on my desk! That said the Tablet version we ordered seems to be lost in the wilderness. At least I know what it looks like now.

One thing i'd say the new 16:9 (1366x768) screens fitted are a little awkward for work, width is fine but the loss in height is annoying. That said it looks to be an industry thing now.

Not me guv

I managed to get out of contracting before the rules were tightened around 2007 ish. Though to be honest my last 'contract' wasn't through an agency nor was there a contract. A local authority asked me to quote and then I supplied the work. So I probably would've escaped IR35.

After today's pile I might consider going back to being my own boss, we'll await what Osborne does for us. Probably it'll end up being relaxed for old etonians only.
