People like Stephen Fry aren't the problem
Its those who take interest in anything ANYONE says on Twitter that are the problem. How about we just all ignore twitter and it might go away and leave us all in peace? Giving a voice to every moron, brain dead celeb and simply ill informed celebs was the stupidest IT decision ever.
Re: Practice safe browsing
How about just doing this instead..
1) Type chrome://plugins into url bar,
2) Click on "disable" beside the java plugin
I'd love to sign up for a decent ISP
But sadly the 4 that server my area are all running over BTS cables and from the same exchange so they all provide pretty much the same speeds, about 3mb at most. Until fibre winds its way to us (which I'm not holding my breathe for) nothing much will change.
Its hardly complicated.
A massive percentage of Android users are folk who have been given it free or cheap by the phone operator. They have minimal interest in using it as a smartphone or at least minimal understanding of how to use it as a smartphone and given that Android is hardly intuitive with its myriad of options (which is exactly why many geeks do like it and thats their choice) its not a huge surprise that your 65 year old auntie doesn't use to surf the net and she probably doesn't even know what an APP is!
More iOS users buy the device to USE it for what makes it more than a normal phone or mp3 player whereas many Droid owners neither know nor care what their free phone can do.
Tube usage
Its a culture thing. Brits are far to paranoid to be seen holding a big obvious tablet on the bus or train, partly out of shame and partly out of fear. Having been in Singapore earlier in the year they have no such shame levels or fear of theft and iPads are everwhere being used for Facebook, gaming etc.
Is this a reaction?
To the pounding The Reg took for their overlay sugar sweet review of the iPhone 5 that now they're going to diss it at any opportunity? This is worse than some of the stuff the Droid Trolls post.
Odd how your own reviewer seemed to think it was worth buying, nothing like consistency huh?
I don't exist according to Virgin
They claim to cover 99% of the population yet my 3 year old house a few miles outside Edinburgh seems to be in the 1%. I'll stick to 3 then thanks.
Take note Samsung
This is how to make a device that's not an iPhone rip off.
Double speeds?
Oh great, so yet again a telco spend money on making already stupidly fast connections even faster while the rest of the country wonder what when fibre optic will actually make its way to their area.
@AC
Every 6 months? Really? Odd that, I thought the iPad 2 came out a year ago, must be my mistake. And as to incremental being the "Apple" way care to tell us all a company who doesn't do that? Samsung who currently have NINETEEN different Android phones? HTC who have EIGHTEEN Droid phones? All just ever so slightly different. If your going to bash Apple at least try and focus on something they do actually suck at.
Theres also the slight matter that the iPad 2 was the best tablet around, the iPad 3 is a slight improvement making it by far the best tablet. Apple haters bash all you like but if what they do is so easy then why is it that no other company can compete? Wheres the iPad beater?
The benefit..
is that you can walk into the store, buy the game, take it home and play it rather than waiting on the wonderful postal service to decide when they want to get round to delivering it.
Some stores are better than others, one of my locals has some pretty hardcore gamers working in it who do know their stuff and really try to help with suggestions of games, offering a 2nd hand for a few quid cheaper etc, whereas another on the high street is staffed by morons.
Pricing is an issue but then its the same everywhere, HMV, Comet etc all charge more in store than online.
I personally would be pretty sad to not have any Gaming specific store any more.
iPhone tarriffs
Perhaps 3 could explain why when you can get unlimited internet for £15 a month on a sim only deal they charge you £25 for unlimited on an iPhone micro sim? Is iPhone data somehow more expensive than anyone elses? The £25 tariff is a joke anyway, who on earth wants 4000 texts a month on an iPhone with email and iMessage??
Good old Samsung
They bring out a Macbook Air ripoff at the same price band and expect it to just magically compete. Wheres the USP? The fact its not an Apple? Sorry Samsung, one of these days you need to learn that just piggybacking on Apples success you'll never be anything more than a "me to" company.
And to think that Apple is always accused of never innovating?
Yes iPhone was used by another company....
then bought by Cisco who managed to cock up the legal case as they couldn't prove continued use of the name so Apple won the right to use it.
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/burnette/cisco-lost-rights-to-iphone-trademark-last-year-experts-say/236
They later settled so Apple now legally own it.
Loving the fingers in the ear...
response to this. As others have already stated, the issue isn't the browser or even how the error is trigger, its the fact that ANY application can cause a system failure like this. If Safari can do it by accident how long before a virus writer makes use of the same exploit to cripple your machine, if they haven't already. Its a proof of concept, doesn't mean it can't happen any other way.
Sticking your fingers in your ears and saying "la la la, I don't use Safari" isn't going to make the issue go away.
@Keep Refigerated
no.. its not just you..

RE:JDX
And what are Microsoft Studios exactly? Oh yeah.. a games studio. About all they've spat out so far is Kinect Joy Ride that I can think off. I agree it takes time to get used to it but then they should be the experts and should produce something for the others to aspire to. Look at the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy showed the world what you can do with motion controls and who developed that, oh yeah Nintendo.
Surely its up to the parents..
to monitor kids playing games at that time of night?? i.e. Get to bed!! Aside from that XBox already has time limits etc for parents to use and I'm sure the PS3 has the same no? How exactly are they going to police it? Helicopter gunships hovering outside kids windows looking for the glow of a monitor?
Lunacy.
Kinect 1
How about they actually release some decent software to go with the millions of Kinect 1s they've sold before bothering with an updated version??
Looks massive...
Do you get a free man bag to carry it around in?? Or do droid fans all wear combats with enormous pockets? Mind you, they'll need deep pockets with that price tag....
Like thats a surprise??
It doesn't understand most Scottish accents!!
Siri is amazing when it works but frankly as with all voice recognition it still fails more often than not for most people I know with various different Scottish region accents.
So yet another Android phone..
which claims to be better, cheaper, faster, stronger and longer than the iPhone, big woop. This is news how? Wake me up when one ACTUALLY does what it claims.
Buzz, hype..
"Typical Apple marketing, leak, buzz, hype."
And yet you read the article and took the time to post on it. Must've worked huh?
As per usual amazed that folk who "hate" Apple click on a story titled "Apple one-day-only sale". What possible value could they think there is in it for them? Some very strange folk out there.
I love the illusion..
that the Android app store is somehow full of anything other than pretty much exactly the same stuff thats in the Apple store. Why would it be? What pray tell do the average Android users use their phones for that the average Apple user doesn't? And you'll note I say Average.. not uber geek.
The answer is my dear friends. Nothing. They play games, they read email, surf the net, edit the odd document and use facebook/twitter/insert other social network website here. A quick look at the Android top selling apps reveals.. Cut the rope, Documents to go, Doodle Jump, Fruit Ninja, Pro Evo and many others which are exactly the same in the iOS store. Sure theres the odd widget type app or such that I'll admit only Droid phones use but the bulk are exactly the same.
As to the folk saying all the stories about Droid having malware are made up are having a laugh, seriously, wise up. Stop being such blinkered fanbois, of course theres malware, theres little to stop it so why wouldn't there be?? You want open, you get open, you get malware.. simples.
The simple fact that its so simple to steal Android apps and download them for free from pirate sites is the no 1 reason you won't make as much money on Android. That and as has already been pointed out, a large section of the Droid userbase has either no interest in apps or in many cases that I've come across don't even know they exist!
Greed
I've used many of these types of sites and got some really good deals from them however I did order a canvas from a company who took months to deliver and moaned that they were suffering high demand which was causing the delay. Didn't stop them offering yet MORE vouchers while my order was still outstanding.
As with this woman they are simply being greedy, theres usually a limit on the number of vouchers sold and it should've been blindingly obvious they couldn't fulfill 8,500 orders!! The story isn't about whether groupon is good or bad, the story is to engage your brain before entering into a contract.
The exact same thing could happen if you advertise anywhere and has happened time and again. Get an offer wrong and offer more than you can afford to lose and you're in trouble, plain and simple.
@Barry Shitpeas
You'd have to go some way to give Jobs a huge/small or any other size of anything.
Bigger screens..
seriously who wants one? Where exactly do you carry a much bigger phone? The iPhone is big enough shoved in a pocket, I can't imagine trying to heft around some of the droid phones. The only people I see regularly with much bigger phones are women who can shove it in an enormous handbag and are therefore quite happy to do so and make it simpler to text, email etc on the slightly bigger keyboard.
@Hugh Tonks
A tv that can wirelessly connect to a hard drive? Got one already, a fairly cheap LG Smart. I have it wired but it can work wirelessly. The interface is horrible though and it seems to randomly decide which files it wants to display, haven't spent the time looking at what codecs its looking for but the basics are there.
Not in Scotland it seems..
As looking at their own rollout plans it shows about a grand total of 20 exchanges getting it between now and Dec 2012.
I won't be holding my breathe.
Queue?
I walked into the Vodafone shop in Edinburgh Princes Street at about 8:45 this morning and was served after waiting behind a massive one person. Seemingly the O2 store was queued out most of the day but thats probably largely due to their stupid decision to not take pre-orders (I took approx 20 seconds to get my phone as opposed to the 15-20 mins a non pre-order would take) and the fact that their activations weren't working properly with folk having their old phone disconnected and the new one NOT connected.
Also to Mr "I don't give a rats ar$e" clearly you do, you read the story after all.
Loving my new shiny gadget and could care less what the haters think but by the same token I would never be stupid enough to queue for hours nevermind days to get a phone.
Firesale?
Ok, I'll bite little troll.
On what basis is record figures over a million orders a flop?? Are you going to tell me the HTC Super Duper Wonderful had 2 million pre-orders?? Please enlighten us all.
Innovation
One of the biggest things leveled at Apple is that the 4S lacks innovation, show me where exactly on any of those phones where the innovation is? They're all just the same thing with slightly different screens, cameras etc. iPhone competitors, yes, beaters, no.
Goodbye Steve..
You changed to world. Which is something not many of those who seem to feel the need to use this as a chance to remind us yet again that they don't like Apple. Heres some other breaking news for you. Nobody cares.
RIP Steve you were one of a kind and I doubt we'll see the likes of you and Mr Gates anytime soon. I raise a glass to you. Cheers.
Oh sure, its a pointless boring upgrade..
as opposed to the rafts of Droid phones coming out every 5 minutes which do NOTHING new whatsoever. They just have slightly different screen sizes, slightly different cameras etc etc. And as to the iPhone 4 not leading the pack. Name one SINGLE other phone which outsells it? I'll be very surprised if there is one. Sure the half dozen companies selling them have sold more of their 40+ droid phones but as to a single phone leading the pack, last I saw it was still the iPhone 4.
Not sure exactly what folk were expecting, no doubt if it was bigger there'd be moaning, if it was smaller, there'd be moaning and so it goes on. They've taken their best selling phone and made it quite a bit better and it'll continue to lead the pack. Moan all you like but I'm betting their accountants won't be moaning any time soon.
As usual...
folk moaning about Apples marketing. Its called being good at it. Don't like it, ignore it and stop reading articles about Apple!!
@Paul Naylor
Haven't you realised Paul, EVERYTHING Apple do is evil and wrong? Apple being good at marketing is evil as how dare they advertise their products. Apple making money is evil as how dare they run a business that makes money. Apple making products people want to buy is evil as how dare they sell things people actually want.
Its a well known fact that Microsoft, Sony, Google etc are all just in the business for the fun of it and always have the publics best interests at heart, so much so they give everything away at cost price. Wait, whats that you say? They dont? They want to make money as well but just aren't as good at it.. well I never.
As usual with Apple products, don't want, don't buy, give the rest of the world peace.
woo-hoo, it'll change my gaming forever!!!
oh.. actually, sorry.. it won't I don't have a 5 Mbps broadband connection and can't get one either. Oh well.
Good luck with the idea but I really struggle to see how this'll take off in any massive numbers in the UK with the hopeless broadband coverage.
It is rocket science to Joe Public.
it is rocket science. Android phones are being sold in so many shapes and forms to the general public who have no flippin idea about permissions and I doubt they are given any training by the stores who sell them it are they?
I can just imagine my parents going for their next handset upgrade and being give a droid phone, they certainly aren't stupid but when it comes to tech I can easily see them quite happily clicking away accepting everything foolishly assuming that they are safe buying things from the store when thats quite clearly very far from the truth.
Same applies to kids, Droid phones are so cheap do you really expect a kid to care when an app says it wants permission to location or whatever? Or indeed that their parents will be savvy enough to stop them? Err.. no. Neither do I.
IT pros who seem to think they entire world thinks the same way they do are way of the mark.
@AC
Why exactly do you feel sorry for XBox owners? For all its touted power theres very few games that show much difference between the machines, shown by the fact pretty much every dual format game gets exactly the same score in reviews. Sure theres minor tweaks here and there but nothing that really effects gameplay that much and before you start on the fanboy route I have both and pick the games largely on the basis of how much I'll be playing them (they're in different rooms) and if I want to play online (in which case 360 still wins hands down).
Both machines have their flaws and strengths plain and simple, the whole ones better than the other arguments have been done to death and are pretty flippin boring. Really, who cares?
Anyway back on topic. Theres still a stack more they can do with both consoles and I'll happily stick with them for the next few years. To be honest I'd resent throwing down more money just to get more polygons. I'm with Citizen Kaned on the memory issue, nothing takes you out of the moment more than a loading screen.
Surely..
this is crying out for an iPad release??? It'd be epic. Don't change a thing except perhaps update the graphics a bit and make it a "little" easier?? I remember the tension of sending my team into a site, creeping around hunting down those damn aliens but as with others remember I didn't get close to finishing it as it was to flippin hard!!
Who cares
Nothing in any of my mails the plod or anyone else would find that interesting anyway. Sure they've better things to do than snoop on little ol me. Perhaps send your bomb making instructions by carrier pigeon in future if your that worried?
Channel 4/E4
Do this ALL the time with the little sponsors things at ad breaks. Never heard of anyone complain about them.
Why is it that..
every Apple thread is full of fandroids whinging and bitching whereas the Apple fans could care less about even reading the Android threads nevermind commenting on them? The hatred for Apple never ceases to amaze. You don't want one, fine NOBODY CARES you don't need to remind us all every 5 minutes.
Had to laugh at the usual comment about Apple releasing a new phone every year when firstly this will be the first new phone in 18 months and secondily having just had a look at the HTC website see that they have no less than THIRTEEN Android phones available and thats just one company (and also not counting their Windows phones). Get a grip, seriously.
Getting really quite bored..
of these sad little no lifes. Why can't they just go back their mums basements and play WOW and eat pizza like all the other geeks?
Top Gun
Maybe our pilots need to go and train with the yanks and play topless volleyball to soft rock music, that'll help their close combat skills.
Whats the fuss??
Before this was introduced a friend uploads a picture, they can tag you in it, post this being introduced, a friend uploads a picture, they can tag you in it, only difference is that it helps them find you in the picture, big woop, whats the story exactly apart from yet another excuse for those who don't use Facebook to remind us all why they won't use it?
Imagine..
A company trying to make money for themselves and their investors, shocking, how dare they?
When will people wise up and realise that companies exist exactly for that reason, its not about the "players" and all the false loyalty that people give to the likes of Sony, Apple, Microsoft etc is completely unfounded and certainly is NEVER returned. They are out to make as much money as possible the same as any other company.
It certainly doesn't appear to be much different to what Bungie offer for Halo for free.
@Simbu
Try READING next time before ranting. The article explains to you, in words, in English that they already have that ability, its just not used on the iPhone yet. "Apple already has this technology in place in iOS: it's how the iOS-based second-generation Apple TV updates itself."
The Big Bang??
All I have to say to that is BAZINGA!!
@S2S
Perhaps if you used a tablet instead of a smartphone you'd be able to type a reply that didn't look like it'd be written by a 12 year old?
Either that or you just need to learn to spell and type?
