'Windows 10 nagware: You can't click X. Make a date OR ELSE'

zen1

Dear Microsoft...

While I don't presume toll m speak for others, with respect to my equipment, you can suck it. I'm not upgrading ANYTHING to Windows X. It sucks, it's horrid, it's not intuitive, it's noisy, it's clunky and its invasive. The only way I'd even remotely consider it is under the following conditions:

1) Implementation of the full Aero UI

2) Stop recording my shit, this includes mouse clicks, keyboard responses, search results, cookies, etc. Just stop!

3) Do NOT change anything to what you think is better than the way I have it configured. It may not be the most efficient way, but it works in a way that's predictable to me.

4) Do NOT assume that I want to participate in any cloud based or "as a service" offering. It's still my hardware and my data, you have to right to redirect it.

5) Revamp your entire support site! It sucks and I'm tired of having to dig to find some error code, only to get redirected to a page promoting windows 10.

Meet these 5 demands and I'll consider it. But I'll tell ya, the jackass who took the reins after Balmer has made my decision to ditch all things MS pretty easy.

On a side note: Tim Cook should really consider awarding Nadella salesman of the decade, for Apple...

And this is supposed to surprise anybody?

They did the same damn thing with MSCE, Novell CNA/CNE's and Cisco CCNA/CCNE/CCIE's. If the educational system can make a buck pandering to someones dream of a life in computer science, they will all day long.

They crank out paper Certified (insert newest fad here) graduates every single day. And while a percentage might be able to do the job, the fact of the matter is, the majority prove only that they're capable of taking test well, rather than applying that knowledge in the real world.

Whenever I visit my relatives in Dayton, I ALWAYS stop by Wright-Patt, to see the xb-70. I'm torn between it and the SR-71, but I remember sitting on the front tire of the 70, when they still parked it outside. Man that was humbling! Not as big as the Antonov but still a large aircraft, and I struggle to imagine that thing flying at speed and can't imagine what it would be like to fly in such an amazing plane.

Re: Acts of God...

Maybe I'm a bit harsh for a gun owner, but that wasn't accidental, that was stupidity, pure and simple. I've paid a fortune for licenses, permits and classes on safety and properly handling a firearm, and it's jackweeds like him that give honest and responsible people, like me, a really bad name.

In short, I was taught a long time ago that there are no accidents with guns. Period. Either you respect them and treat them properly or you're simply choosing to act irresponsibly and are endangering innocent people. A sock doesn't securely contain a pistol safely, no matter how small. Even a child can figure that one out.

I have not one iota of sympathy for him or his foot! My heart goes out to the woman he injured and as far as I'm concerned, he should be completely financially responsible for any and all medical bills for her, related to this and he should have his ass locked away for several decades, for almost killing someone.

Re: Don't blame users for the UI

I don't know how many times I suggested of at least giving the user a choice between the Aero and the Metro UI's. Since it first made its debut, I have loathed the metro interface, so when MS delivered a hybrid love child of the the Aero/Metro UI's not only was I furious, but I was insulted at such a half fast attempt.

In the company I work for we have thousands of users who will need to be trained, most of which fought the migration from XP to 7. In my little consulting business, I don't how many of my customers who've contacted me to get rid of windows 8.x and 10.

All that being said, IF Microsoft listened to the tester feedback, the OS would be completely different. If that's not enough, Microsoft totally destroyed what little trust and faith I had in them because of their new anti-privacy/pro-big brother policies. I think that's reprehensible of them and I'm annoyed as hell that Microsoft is people, who truly don't understand the full extent of what's going on.

Me personally, I'm committed to abandoning all things microsoft on all of my own equipment. And if I run across one of my customers whom I think can handle the transition, I recommend them to give *NIX a go. Most who've given it a try have liked it immensely and don't ms the Windows drama anymore.

FBI backs down against Apple: Feds may be able to crack killer's iPhone without iGiant's help

zen1

yawn

I think it's rather hypocritical of Cook to stand there and proclaim a huge victory for privacy advocates, when Apple have pretty much bent over and grabbed their ankles for the government of China and god knows who else.

Furthermore, I find it absolutely laughable for Cook to stand there with a straight face and state he hated to be at odds with "Apple's government", or something to that effect. Apple is a multinational corporation that really doesn't report to just one government. Sure, it was founded in the US, but it has long sold its soul to SE Asia under the false pretense of "shareholder equity".

Finally, I want to make it crystal clear that I am pro privacy and find it pitiful that the FBI (et. al) feels compelled to take the easy route and go to the manufacturer, rather than figure it out for themselves. FFS, as many people who work for DARPA, the NSA, FBI, CIA, DHS, or any branch of the military, there has to be at least one or two people that might have the skills to at least give it a try. Or, they could just fecking outsource, like they have been doing for years.

I think this whole affair is pitiful and I don't know which is worse, Apple or the FBI!

Rooting your Android phone? Google’s rumbled you again

zen1

Maybe I just don't get it

but with the inherent vulnerabilities of both droid & iOS, why would any security conscious individual actually want to use apple or google pay systems? While I'm sure I'll get flamed for asking such a preposterous question, it just seems like every single day there's just another hack that allows some one access to your phone. Obviously, there will be those who love it for the convenience but, after seeing daily disasters with online banking for individuals, can anything really good come from any of this?

Microsoft steps up Windows 10 nagging

zen1

Dear microsoft

Dear MS. Over the past 25+ years we've had lots of good and bad times together. With DOS, you helped me do things I never could have done without the aid of a large mini or small mainframe. You've helped me conquer worlds, destroy aliens and entertained me for months at a time. But alas, all good things come to an end. MS, it's not me, it's you. I've come to expect a certain level of stability on my machine and I'm also quite protective of my data, so I won't be needing access to your cloud, nor will I be in need updates being shoved down to my machines, whether I need them or not, nor will I shed a tear at all of the gigs, if not terabytes, of space I get back from deleting all of the original files the patches supposedly fixed.

Through the years you gave me access to some fairly decent tools for me to manage, operate, manipulate and compute data, in ways I not thought possible, but after Vista, Windows 8 and now 10, I've come to realize I don't need you telling me how to and where to keep my data nor do I feel the need to help you recover billions of lost revenue, by trying to make up for losses caused by your inability keep up with Google or facebook. It's bad enough you've completely gouged me over the years but for you to turn around and tell me I can have an OS for "free" but then turn around and whore me and my data out to advertisers? I have a problem with that. Call it an irreconcilable difference.

So, for now, we need to go our separate ways until you get your collective heads out of your asses and realize that it's not my data that's the commodity, your products are. So, so long, it's been real and shoot me an email when you get a CEO who isn't an asshole and actually listens to his customer base.

Sued for using HTTPS: Big brands told to cough up in crypto patent fight

zen1

Re: Dear rest of the world:

The thing I find so infuriating about the patent trolling problem is that law suits over something as ubiquitous as https would be akin to Rolls suing the rest of the auto industry because of their use of the steering wheel in an automobile, or Lancaster suing other manufacturers for using disc brakes to stop their vehicles. It's a waste of the courts time, a waste of company expenses, which ultimately get passed to the consumer, etc. This shit has to stop!

zen1

Re: Re stu 18

I think public floggings, or to be more specific, caning would be perfectly suitable for punishment of the trolls.

zen1

Dear rest of the world:

We think people who pull this kind of crap are scum, too. We can thank the less than sincere promises of torte reform by lawyers in all levels of government.

Re: Safest Option?

V1,

Given OPM's less than stellar understanding and managing certain databases that contain sensitive information, they have absolutely no credibility in making statements like that. If you have or ever had a clearance your identity and names references are completely vulnerable. And sorry, as much as I'd like to blame the GOP for a lot of our country's woes I honestly can't as it would be completely misdirected. Every government agency, department, office and entity that handles any data that could be considered sensitive is required to comply with NIST SP 800. She clearly and consciously chose to ignore it.

zen1

@ AC: Re: Conspiracy

I've been following this case rather closely as I recall all of the paperwork I had to submit and oaths I had to take, to protect sensitive information, back in the day. Given the details we have concerning the data that has been found and confirmed as classified (I'm really being generous here), any other individual, including a former joint chief, would be fired and prosecuted. If said individual was simply a mere mortal, there would be 10's if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, jail time and one would be prohibited from ever holding public office again.

Please let me preface this next statement with: I think all of the presidential candidates are idiots and I can't see a single redeeming quality in the whole lot, but Mrs. Clinton is by far the most loathsome. She's not only treated like a sacred cow by her party, but is advertised as one of the most intelligent women in the world. For someone who is as allegedly brilliant as she is AND a lawyer, one would think she might have known better?

As for the talk about revolution here in the US... Attempting to overthrow the government and replacing it with something other than the constitutional republic it is is illegal. I think the proper context of the term revolution would best be defined as reset.

What America's drone owner database could look like in future

zen1

Not completely true

Said purchaser MUST complete a background check for the ATF. The only loophole, which I think they should close, is a "straw sale", when a private individual sells a weapon to another private individual. In most states, going through a federal firearms dealer isn't required.

They should require all weapons sales to go through a FFL holding broker and as usual, a firearms background check should be mandatory.

Downloads for Windows 10 November big-bang build axed by Microsoft

zen1

how much could Disney have saved by RIF'ing American workers and replacing them with Visa holders? Unless they're contractors it has to be less than a half mil, which is the proverbial microscopic drop in the Disney accounting bucket. Once again, this is nothing more than a clear case of yet another American corporation selling out, simply for the short term.

Who's running dozens of top-secret unpatched databases? The Dept of Homeland Security

zen1

@ Prst. V.Jeltz

I know this is probably obvious, but at least acknowledging them internally is a good start. Broadcasting the fact without a coherent plan already in place, OR not staying ahead of them in the first place, is shows a systemic failure of processes and piss poor management.

zen1

Infuriating!

As someone who's audited by the govt on a regular basis, I find it effing infuriating that the very same government entities that make sure my company is complying with DoD handling of sensitive data is the same group of idiots who are running a complicated IT infrastructure like a bunch of <explicative deleted> noobs. If it were up to me, shit like this would not happen. Period. If it did, department heads would be in jail for criminal negligence, if not tried on espionage. As nosy as this government is and as sophisticated as it's intelligence gathering can be, you'd figure that there's be a little inter-departmental assistance going on and they'd get their security shored up. But no, it's like a bunch of independent fiefdoms, all squabbling and finger pointing until they get caught with their pants down.

If I get a deficient on my audits, I have a short amount of time or I lose my business. It's as simple as that. The fact that there have been so many public facing systems, networks and services that have had so many security problems is in-effing-excusable. Someone in the executive branch (god forbid) or the legislative branch (even bigger imbeciles) should get off their asses and do something.

People are upset because they aren't getting a trinket after pledging money on an initial start up's? Um, that is one of the inherent risks of being a venture capitalist, no? From the comments I've read on KS, people are acting like the start up was a retail outlet for this product, instead of a fledgling venture. And if they didn't pick up on the fact that there is some personal risk involved then I can't say I have a whole lot of sympathy for them, because you really don't have to read between the lines, there.
