Windows 8 is Windows 7 without the windows
been using Win8 eval version for a week now, I like the splash and the clean look which I understand is for tablets really. But what I'm missing is the 'Windows' (ie tiled look), so Win8 is basically a windowless Windows.. unless you fall back to the PC mode which for all practical purposes is Win7.
So Windows 8 is really Win 7 + the tablet interface (and as I understand crippled API to the chagrin of developers).
Obviously this, now-its-a-table-now-its-a-pc OS is targeted for its new tablet+keyboard devices. I see where they are coming from, I just think the strategy is wrong.. I think they should have focused on improving the 'windows' philosophy and interface which can work in both PC and tablet modes and which is lacking in tablets instead of a totally different interface for both.
It's a stupid law...

... Google engineers are laughing their asses off on this one.. I cant understand how Apple insists on putting out a quarter baked product.

.. seriously, how do you know that your router is not secretly monitoring you anyway? sure we can sniff packets within our network but the serial interface? the only way to do that is to grab packets going to the upstream but not from within the router itself.
I've learned my lesson.. from last year and the year before that..
.. still with AWS -- nothing compares really with the maturity of the offer and price so far -- but we dont have any illusions.. we've backed up all our critical files in another side of the planet. We'd still be down if the worse happened but at least we have another set of really remote backup. Google Compute will probably take another 2-3 years to be 'good enough' to be even considered.

probably not... it might be too taxing on onboard pre-micro computers. I'd hazard a guess it's all fire and forget ala UDP.

.. had this bug on my iphone 4 for almost 2 years now, as soon as I upgraded to ios 5 and it turns out even those with 4S were also affected, there's thousands of iphones in this state judging from the threads in apple's (self-help) support pages.
and couldnt help but notice the new color scheme of El Reg nowadays.. dominant M$ blue.

Mute problem still is a problem..
when I upgraded my iphone 4 to ios 5.1, my phone is always on mute when making calls (ie the other party cant hear me), putting it on speakphone or using a headset however works.. fast forward to 5.1.1 and still the same problem. What I noticed was the mute button (on the virtual keypad) always has the dashed line across it.. whether its highlighted or not. I'm not losing any sleep on this but it sure is irritating.

yep.. its a hollow victory, if you call it that.. oracle simply won on an assumption that SSO is copyrightable. I suppose we'll just have to wait for the judge to decide if it so (he promised he will if the jury thinks it is).
I think, like the EU courts ruled recently, he will say it's not copyrightable.

part of the reason why I'm contemplating on moving to a Mac..
1) installed fedora 15 in my (then) 5ish year old compaq presario a year ago.
2) worked really well, but for the life of me I couldnt make the laptop print to a network printer.
3) hibernate simply sucks and results to a system crash that requires a reboot or worse fsck
4) I dont have the time nor patience anymore to 'tinker' around.. I just want something that works.. comes with age I suppose.
5) As a developer, I'm increasingly getting more inquiries for 'mobile' apps development.. well and good except that I need a Mac for iPhone/ipad development..
6) The only way I can run Netbeans (my preferred java IDE) +Eclipse (for Android) + Apple's XCode IDE is in a Mac.
7) MacOSX is still, afterall, Unix.. so yes I may want to do the occassional tinkering.
So there.. I've bared my soul...

well unlike old and spent satellites this one is loaded with toxic fuel.. I wonder how they can control its eventual descent since they can only receive comms one way (it they just get telemetry info and not sent commands)..if there's a chance that it will impact a city or something can they shoot it down once it reaches the atmosphere? maybe call up the good US of A and offer a target practice for the airborne laser perhaps?

iOS sucks in file management bigtime..
even with itunes, plugging in your iphone to a laptop to manage your songs, images, videos etc is a real pain.
