Virgin Media's 'bye-bye to buffering' ad nuked by watchdog - AGAIN

Badvok

Re: [no VM customer receives download speeds of less than 15Mbit/s].

Not really untrue if you consider the context - it is an advert to attract NEW subscribers, hence IMO, you should really read it as "No NEW VM customer receives download speeds of less than 15Mbit/s".

Re: xxxxOffice

"The corporate IT-provided MS-centric solution can't even read older MS stuff (where does this idea that MS provide backward compatibility come from), and it doesn't stand a chance with WordPerfect."

Office Professional Plus 2010 (i.e. the version I'm currently using) comes with converters for WordPerfect 5.x and 6.x, Works 7.0-9.0, all old Word versions, and a generic text grabber for even older stuff. I'm thinking this might be why people think MS provide backward compatibility.

I guess your IT department just isn't giving you the whole shebang.

Virgin ramps 4G to a whopping 90Mbps - and switches it off

" isn't even sharing its UK 4G exclusive with its own brands, Orange and T-Mobile. So it is unlikely to let an upstart MVNO get any 4G goodness in the 1800MHz band it owns."

EE IS Orange and T-Mobile, just because it is not selling 4G under those brand names doesn't really mean that it is not sharing 4G with those brands. I guess at a stretch you could say that Orange and T-Mobile are logically MVNOs of EE, but really they are just brands. It is a bit like saying Toyota aren't going to allow Lexus to release their GT86 as a Lexus product.

Samsung slaps swift patch over phone-wiping Galaxy S III vuln

Badvok

Re: Not a (just) Touchwiz problem

"none of the others have Factory Reset USSD codes. hopefully."

You can hope, but in all likelihood this facility exists in all handsets.

Don't know why the reporters keep saying it is down to TouchWiz when the basic vuln has been shown to work on other phones. The only thing missing for other phones is the reset USSD code, security through obscurity is not security.

Virgin Media STILL working on fix for SuperHub corrupt downloads glitch

Badvok

Re: SuperHub Install

"First thing he did without being prompted was put it into modem mode and use my existing router."

Wow, he knew how? When I suggested it to the guy who came to do mine he simply plugged my existing router into the SuperHub while it was still in Router mode giving me double routing :( Though he did also turn off the Wi-Fi.

Badvok

Re: Still on the old cable modem

Yep, and having experienced the type of support people who seem to work for VM, it is for that reason my SuperHub has been in modem mode since the day it arrived.

Badvok

Re: "...the problem was a firmware one and nothing to do with the SuperHub's hardware."

I'm not saying your experience is wrong, but mine is different. The SuperHub in modem mode has been rock-solid for me, it may be that you have some other problem that is causing the drop-out - might be worth investigating further.

No, it's not general WiFi use, with Vodafone I believe you get bundled access to BT OpenZone WiFi and it is this that is limited to 2GB.

You are probably better off buying it outright on a credit card and paying it off in monthly installments (even with the outrageous interest rates they charge) than getting it on any of these contract deals at the moment.

Apple iPhone 5 hands-on review

Badvok
Meh

It's a nice phone. I like the fact that they've beveled the edge so if you drop it the glass isn't always the first thing to hit the floor and shatter. Hopefully they've also fixed any signal issues once and for all, although from the pics it looks like they are still using the same antenna concept.

Going a bit bigger and 16:9 is a good idea, it matches what everyone else is doing and most of the content that people will be viewing even if it does upset a few of the fans of the 4:3 screen (if they don't backtrack and deny they ever said anything of the sort).

4G is obviously a must-have these days for a top-end phone.

NFC should have been in there, and it is always funny reading comments all over the place by Apple fans that say any feature missing is not needed! (Typing this while eating my lunch which I paid for with a wave of my phone.)

Re: Waste of my time

"But if you had to use Word for Windows without a mouse, would it be an upgrade over WP?"

Speaking from personal experience - yes, most definitely!

Although I'm one of the minority around here who learnt windows the hard way, from version 1, often had to work mouse-less, and so learned all the keyboard short-cuts. Another one of the good things MS have done with maintaining compatibility with older versions is that you can still use any Windows machine without a mouse!

(I don't know if this still holds true for Windows 8, it is not something I tried when I experimented with it.)

I know of at least one large company that generally grants admin-level rights to developers to their own machine so they can do their job. Since this now allows them to read the password of anyone else who has enabled finger-print login on what is possibly a shared machine, which in-turn may actually be a domain login with access to pretty much any machine in the company, I'd say this is definitely an exploit albeit a rather obscure one.

@Paul_Murphy: Who said anything about Tor being the EXCLUSIVE preserve of paedos? I didn't, those are your words not mine.

All I pointed out was that by running a Tor node you are actively providing infrastructure that allows the anonymous distribution of child pornography. Sure it has lots of good uses too, but for me the bad outweighs the good. You may be able stick your fingers in your ears and ignore the harm the system you are providing MIGHT be causing but I couldn't.

Nobody really knows how much good use versus bad use there is - that's the point - but I'd wager there is considerable bad use simply because that is the way the world is.

Re: Can more people

Wow, even more amazing, we have people here who think that:

"Tor also makes it possible for users to hide their locations while offering various kinds of services, such as web publishing or an instant messaging server. Using Tor "rendezvous points," other Tor users can connect to these hidden services, each without knowing the other's network identity. This hidden service functionality could allow Tor users to set up a website where people publish material without worrying about censorship. Nobody would be able to determine who was offering the site, and nobody who offered the site would know who was posting to it."

Is in some way equivalent to a postal service where the messages are all openly and clearly addressed to a particular recipient and more often than not can probably be traced directly back to the sender.
