House bill: 'Hey NASA, that asteroid retrieval plan? Fuggedaboutit'

Yag

Re: The next man on the Moon will be Chinese

The US seemed rather interested in space for two main reasons :

- Because of the other use of rockets. You know, the one with the funny explosive devices on top.

- Because the other side was beating them to it.

You may think "FOR SCIENCE!" should be in the list, but it was probably not considered very important...

Now, the question is... Why are the chineese interested in space? i'ld say the first reason still apply for them, but i'ld also wager that they are planning long term exploitation of space-based ressources.

The devil's venom (nitrous oxide and hydrazine, funny stuff...)

"According the _Ignition!_, hydrazine's usually reserved for the upper stages, where its storability is an asset and there aren't any environmental issues to worry about."

The non cryogenic fuel/oxydizer combination is also welcome in ICBMs, as this allows easy storage and very fast launch...

Furthermore, the environmental issues of those two compound are generally not significant compared to the nuclear warhead. See enclosed picture.

Re: without complete offline....

Unless you have a RJ45 in your forehead to allow for a direct brain/internet interface, you'll always need some kind of box...

The main issue for a very dumb box is the required low latency - FPS players knows what I mean - and very high speed connection - sending high resolution/high refresh rate pictures in almost real time is not as simple as a bufferized broadcast TV.

You'll pay more for such a connection than by buying a high end console every couple of years...

I can spot a fallacy when I see one

Same for me, but I also consider that, between :

- Me, with my "basic" education on physics (up to Shroedinger's equation, and I forgot most of the stuff due to lack of use)

and

- An army of overqualified eggheads thinking routinely about this stuff for the last 80 years...

I'm the more likely to be wrong. Occam's overused-till-dullness razor and so on...

Help me, Obi Wan Quantobi!

Can someone try to explain in layman terms the whole "entanglement" stuff?

My current comprehension of this phenomenon is probably way off...

Here it is (please don't laugh too much)

Basic entanglement :

Two photon are produced with a given characteristic (let's say polarity) set at opposite value for each photon.

Due to quantic incertainty, you cannot tell which photon is set to which polarity until you measure one of them.

Once one of the pair measured, then the value of the other is also known.

Never could figure out why a lot of physicists seems interested by such an obvious result, so I'm probably missing something...

Report: China IP theft now equal in value to US exports to Asia

Yag
Facepalm

Wow... just wow...

"Currently, Internet attacks against hackers for purposes of self-defense are as illegal under U.S. law as the attacks by hackers themselves," the report states. "If counterattacks against hackers were legal, there are many techniques that companies could employ that would cause severe damage to the capability of those conducting IP theft."

So... if a thief break into your house and steal something, it should be legal to break into the thief's house and take it back?

As an extreme example : If someone kills a relative of your, it should be legal to kill the murderer yourself?

Yeah, it should work...

I also wonder about what they're implying with this "retrieve stolen information."... Does it means the information is 'lost' by the original owner, and they need to get it back, or - more probably - that they should retrieve the exclusivity to this information by destroying the stolen version in the hacker's network... Isn't it "destruction of proof"?

Yag

Indeed, it is true. In the land of the economists.

In this marvellous land, if corporate tax is removed thanks to the InvisiHand Faery or one of her friend, then :

- the corporations will reduce the overhead in good & services production

- they will then be able to reduce price in order to gain market share.

- As the one with the lowest price would grab all the customers, and game theory teach that corporations will NEVER agree on a given prices...

- ... then the price will be reduced until the equilibrium point is reached, which should be precisely the former price reduced by the cost of the taxes - no more, no less.

- all the benefits will then be reaped by the consumers!
