Bloodied Samsung's profits down 25% as it clings to mobe crown

MrXavia

Re: Being squeezed from both ends

The reason I buy Samsung is simple, their devices fit my needs.. big clear screen, fast CPU, microsd slot, removable battery..

Nothing revolutionary, but it meets my needs...

the iPhone is often touted as revolutionary, which is rubbish... it was simply evolutionary, and in its first incarnation, it was devolutionary, the only thing it brought over the Symbian based phone I had at the time was a slightly bigger screen and a capacitive touch input. nothing revolutionary there, infact it didn't even have apps....

Well thats what you get if you don't build it here.....

At least the Lifting fans/engines are built in the UK for the F35 (rolls royce) but whether the computers will turn on is another matter... I remember at one point the US was refusing to hand over the source code.....

We have a great history of building amazing aircraft here in the UK & Europe, I can't see why we didn't build out own VSTOL fighter, at the very least we should never have sold off our Harriers!

Sure it is... its much narrower than the competition... I always thought the iPhone was too narrow for mens big hands to use.. turns out its a real ladies phone!

ISPs haul GCHQ into COURT over dragnet interwebs snooping

MrXavia

Re: I should jolly well hope ...

With a Warrant, I would hope they do monitor things...

but that is the key thing, they need oversight, to ensure they don't overreach.. and its not so much because of GCHQ itself, but because at some point you know that there will be councils asking GCHQ for emails sent by someone they think is putting their bins out too early....

BT at last coughs to 'major outage' after broadband went titsup across UK on Sat

MrXavia

Problems started on Friday, I had to switch to alternate DNS servers.

But even with alternate DNS there were still problems, I am sure that there were routing issues as well that may or may not have been BT related, my mobile broadband has some issues also.

Google: Glass goggles are a 'fairly lousy surveillance device'

MrXavia

Re: Presumably..

There is a big difference to taking a video with a camera and wearing one on your head that can capture everything...

Simply put if you plan on having CCTV, you plan where you put it and why you need it... ensuring you put up the right signs if your a business...

If you have someone hold up a camera, you do it for a reason again you tell people why or your recording within the rights you have...

But with google glass, recording video is always on, and unlike CCTV, it is mobile, unlike a video camera or digital camera, it is not obvious that they are using it... I.E you have no idea if the person is reading an email, doing nothing or recording everything you say and do...

I have no problem with CCTV, I have no problem with people taking pictures or video in public...

BUT I do have a problem with people wearing a video camera on their heads all day, or recording conversations when I talk to them (and you KNOW that if companies have employees wear them, they will record the conversations)

Re: "cannot see or avoid any obstacles in its flight path".

My thoughts exactly, for 1500 quid I'd expect basic collision avoidance to be built into it.... nothing fancy, just some IR range finders on the rotor arms and a simple "back off an don't crash into things algorithm"... with an instant rotor shutdown (with electronic breaking) when something got too close that it might come into contact with the blades...

Everyone can and should learn to code? RUBBISH, says Torvalds

MrXavia

Re: The man is correct

"You are missing a few points and so is Torvalds:"

but your missing the point, even the spokeswoman for the 'year of code' can't code at all... they oversell what you can learn to do in a short time... and basically they will barely teach you anything you need to learn...

When I was at school they taught very little about coding, I remember trying to explain to a teacher than a BBC Micro was useless to me when I asked to complete my coursework in the lab which had Mac's, and I had already saved everything on a mac...

I learned to program because it interested me, but I think exposing people to coding is a good idea, and actually using a 'visual' building block language to teach the principals might be best....

MrXavia

Re: arehole

No, he sees the point... coding is not something everyone should do...

I've taught students at university that could barely throw together a basic html page after 3 years at university... I had to hand walk them through basic things.. and these are people who chose to take computer science at university! When I was 8 I knew more than them about how to program...

(But I would not actually call HTML or CSS coding, I call that a markup language)

Londoners urged to cut landlines and take up wireless broadband

MrXavia

"most of the cost of line rental is for the maintenance of the physical equipment"

I don't accept that it costs £14/month (BT's prices) to maintain a bit of copper between you and the exchange/cabinet, my copper wire has been in place for over 30 years, where is the cost for the line? the equipment you talk about is the PSTN voice equipment right?, not the ADSL+ stuff?

Samsung's 'OS of Everything' Tizen still has little to offer

MrXavia

Re: "It is easier and cheaper to connect different OSs and devices"

Actually, samsung are way ahead of Apple with their 'openness' and interpoability...

My Windows, linux, Android devices all talk to each other nicely, they can all throw video to the TV through their native apps, with IOS, i would need extra apple hardware to do it.... (although Samsung seriously messed up with their latest video players, there is no easy way to browse a 1000+ file DLNA server so I have to use a third party app to browse which then uses the built in player or sends to any DLNA client on my LAN

Google's driverless car: It'll just block our roads. It's the worst

MrXavia

Re: Jeremy Clarkson ???

you just KNOW they will try to make it crash....

MrXavia

@naughtyhorse

Its very easy to do...

If you are on a motorway, there are often no markers on the motorway until about 1 mile before, so if your driving a new route your not used to, you can easily start overtaking 2 miles before and then miss your exit if you can't get over...

Sure if you have GPS you may know (depending on how early it notifies you, mine is around 1 mile before), but still I would overtake with 2 Miles left if the cars are going 50 on the inside lane I would be passing at 70 on the outside..

The thing is, even a convoy of automated cars, should leave a 3-4 car length gap between them for safety imho, plenty of room to merge, at 70MPH you travel approx. 30 meters a second!

ET hunter: We will find SPACE ALIENS in 20 years

MrXavia

I am pretty certain we are not the only Intelligent species that will ever exist, whether we are the first, the last or in the middle I do not know...

We have only been broadcasting loud enough to be heard for the past 60-70 years, and rather than continuing that, we are trying to reduce power needs and thus out radio signature will quieten, give it 30 years and our noise will be barely noticeable...

yes keep listening, but the chances of detecting any other intelligent life is minimal by radio waves, we are better off looking for evidence of intelligent life itself, such as light pollution.

What we need is bigger, better optical telescopes, capable of seeing extrasolar planets directly rather than indirectly as we do now.

but most of all we need research into FTL communications, sure it might not be possible, BUT the key thing is that if it exists that is what advanced civilisations will be using... Imagine the benefits too, the end of bad pings!

JJ Abrams and Star Wars: I've got a bad feeling about this

MrXavia

ST:ID was not that bad

It was a well made film with a great cast, a few nice references for the fans,

BUT saying that, anyone who watched space seed & ST:TWoK clearly can see how even though the actors were great, the story was a bit weak, and Khan had been watered down (although in this version you are talking about a man that has not had the same hatred boiling up inside himself that the original Khan had)..

I do hope the next instalment of Star Trek is without Abrams at the helm..

But on the Star Wars front... he can't mess up more than they did with the prequals.. I watched them all with my boys a few weeks ago... and even they (4 & 7) clearly loved the Original Trilogy way more than the prequels... I think the only good thing about the prequels is that without them we would not have the clone wars animated series, which both my boys love!

The banned weapons laws are very specific, and even then its usually bans on sales/imports not possession/manufacture last time I checked.

Although walking down the street with it would very likely get you arrested, but then again you can be arrested for carrying a walking stick if the police had reason to believe you intended to use it as a weapon...

Anyone wanting a long haul flight with a decent airline?

Sure it used to be REALLY crap, but T5 is not too bad, and T3 has been spruced up (still long bloody walks to the gates though.....)

I actually don't mind T3 at heathrow, and since I've never had a good BA flight i'm sticking to flying Virgin for now.. (although with the delta merge I am concerned that quality will fall)

Re: I don't see this as a problem.

Just because you don't use the feature, does not me others don't,

sure when Google replaced talk with hangouts on android, they ruined their own video chat option on smart phones, but hey hangouts are 'hip' its not like you ever want to talk to a single person is it? or call them using google talk from your contacts right?? all that I could do easily before they changed it...

anyway back to my point.. video chat is great when you away from your family, it lets you keep in contact with loved ones on a more personal level, such as reading a goodnight story to your children and letting them SEE you read it... A front facing camera is a must for me...

Now if only google can sort out their damned hangouts so its more part of the phone than an annoying app....

What's Android Silver? Samsung preps Tizen mobes 'for Russia, India'

MrXavia

There is a simple reason to 'shun' samsung apps, if you change to a different android device in a years time will you be able to install your apps? with google play, I am 99% sure I can no matter which brand of Android device I buy....

secondly, Samsung's apps are worse than google own... remember S-Translate? the whole 'show' of using it to converse in china on their unveiling of the S4? then people finding out you needed a data connection!

Googles works without it (sure not as nice as online version but it works offline!)

Spotty solar power management platform could crash the grid

MrXavia

Re: 566 terawatts a day?

Solar is a great idea, most roofs are empty with nothing on them, and could easily be built from solar materials, cover every roof in the UK and you would generate all the power we need... BUT the critical thing is cost, secondly the look...

they are ugly things and the prettier solar 'tiles' cost way more...

also if your roof is not south facing, don't even bother.. although they will try to sell you them anyway.. I had 2 people quote me for solar panels, promising masses of savings... then i had a chat with a local independent installer, who told me how terrible it would be and its not worth doing...

The only way solar will be worth doing, is when houses have it built in when they are built, so it looks right..

DreamWorks CEO: Movie downloaders should pay by screen size

MrXavia

Re: Movie business model.

Similar here in the UK, we have a small luxury (i.e. leather seats and a well stocked bar) cinema near me I frequent, and one of their 'adverts' before the show starts points out most of the money from the ticket prices goes to the movie makers and they run the cinema with profits from bar sales..

After that I promptly did my duty and brought another pint of beer and packet of pork scratchings!

Seriously they could rise the price at this cinema by £3 and still get people through the door, their prices are lower than the local multiplex, which I always feel like needing a shower after visiting!

MrXavia

No thanks, I will keep to buying blu-ray or whatever physical medium replaces it for 4K,

And for certain I will never rely on the cloud... Sure I have a UV account, it is handy, but I also have a physical copy of every UV film I have, the Physical copy is much higher quality...

Samsung Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner hacked in just 4 DAYS

MrXavia

Re: Biometrics...

Exactly, and they are using it for ePassport gates?

Sure IRIS was not perfect, BUT its much harder to fake at border control (i.e. you can't just stick a fake iris on your eyeball like you can a fake fingerprint).. the technology needed some updating, to avoid the need for multiple cameras at different heights which often had the wrong one activated I noticed.... Surely some form of eye tracking technology as you walked into the gate, with a high magnification lens would allow the eye to be scanned at a distance...

Over $1billion Lost profits? I call bull...

You can wipe off any 'profits' they expected to get from my Android purchases, I would not have purchased iDevices instead, it would have been a pure linux device instead (before buying my first android phone there was a linux based phone I almost brought) or at worst a windows device...

I expect that equates to over £1000 they would claim in lost profit from my android purchases...

(in actual fact I expect Apple products would have been more expensive and had higher profit margins)
