Thumbs up to the technology, very impressive work, if it works as described but I wonder if it is as accurate as they say though, trained with 50million chinese? try it with non-chinese people and see if it works?

BBC: We're going to slip CODING into kids' TV
Re: Oh crap.
ummm maybe you should keep tools far away from them?
I sympathise with the phone thing though... and don't worry, I am sure the 19 month old will learn how to unlock your phone soon, I think mine was 2 when he started watching me unlock mine and copied me...
the thing with infants, they learn the pattern your hand does, NOT the code, so they figure it out faster than an adult without a direct line of sight.... although you only have to unlock your phone 2 or 3 times with the kid on your lap...
Re: I'm all for teaching children how to program...
"it's an essential part of being a politically mature member of society as more and more issues are related to data processing...."
I disagree, the last thing we want is every user behind a keyboard thinking they can 'program' a solution because they took a GCSE in IT and did some programming... that would cause more mess than anything, users cause enough problems with just excel and how to do macros they learned in school....
"but please don't torture kids with C++"
I agree, if we are to teach programming, lets teach the techniques, not the code....
Those who want to learn will make the effort and take further classes in the subject...
I.E. lets use something akin to lego mindstorms 'visual' programming language, my 7 year old understands that, and I am using it to teach him the principles of programming..

Now that's FIRE WIRE: HP recalls 6 MILLION burn-risk laptop cables
I agree actually, I've had very little bother with HP printers, and the printer drivers work pretty well.. oh you don't want to install the bloat software that comes with it (that goes for any manufacturers 'extras') I always wonder why they bother to supply it, but the drivers are great, the options are clear and easy to use, i.e. duplex, poster print, borderless, booklet print.. all the little finishing touches that mean your software doesn't need to know how to do these things...
US Copyright Office rules that monkeys CAN'T claim copyright over their selfies
Re: Almost, not quite
But if you ask a stranger to take a photo, they are working for YOU, you requested they take the shot... so its your copyright...
So IF he had handed the camera to the Monkey and gave him a banana afterwards, then surely it would no longer have been an accident, it would be work for hire...

Took my sons out for the day last weekend, went to visit some caves up a mountain in the peak district.....
They had a great time... but what I found crazy was the people using iPads to take photos!
I never see this with other brands, only iPad users..
I had my DSLR with me, so I have loads of lovely photos, taken in the low light of the caves without a flash...
Re: Flash
Most people are too thick to know how to turn off the flash....
But then again, taking photos of anything important with a phone is stupid, they are handy for spur of the moment shots, but that is about it... they are terrible in low light... they are terrible without the flash.. they are slow to respond...
Top Gun display for your CAR: Heads-up fighter pilot tech
Re: Health and safety gone maddddd!
"ANYthing that gets in the way of you driving safely is worth culling, and in-your-face distractions of messages you have to read is bad news. As a matter of fact, an analogue speedo is in this context also better - you read that a LOT quicker than a digital one."
Not sure I agree about the analogue speedo, but I agree that anything that distracts needs to be hidden away, no Facebook, no text messages, none of that crud should be on any car display.
My phone can read out text messages if I want to hear them as they arrive, not that I use the feature.. my phone links to my car and allows me to receive calls if It is safe to do so, and usually thats only a few seconds to tell the person I am driving and to call back later...
I would like a simple, HUD in my car, a digital speedo (I can read them faster, since its just two symbols my brain instantly understands, rather than looking where a line is pointing..) a Nav display that shows me my next turn and distance to turn plus the next turnings name, all focused at infinity for me so I don't have to refocus.
And while many would disagree, I think having very simple feedback of car controls like selecting a new waypoint (i.e. a petrol station/supermarket), changing car temp, etc. would be very helpful, as right now to do any of this you do take your eyes off the road, even if you can make the changes without looking you confirm them with your eyes.
Re: Irrelevant observation number 1:
Surely every car already has built in call handling (i.e. bluetooth)? or at least I've not looked at a new car in the past 10 years that hasn't had it.
I think taking calls while driving is about the same distraction level as talking with a passenger... except with a call you can end it with a push of a button and get rid of the distraction...
the hud looks a good idea, BUT I can't see many Bentley drivers buying it... or any luxury car brand.. I actually would love a HUD in my car, but no way will I be ruining the look of my car with an after market mess like that...
Why hackers won't be able to hijack your next flight - the facts
Re: We don't need no stinkin' backups
"> Why shouldn't that maintenance include a test flight
Because it's dangerous to the crew, plane, and anything the plane might crash into. I sure as hell wouldn't fly anything that has had the primary flight controls intentionally turned off."
Well if you have two channels, i.e. a redundant system, why cant it be as simple as flicking a switch from primary to secondary systems? then if they fail, flip back to primary....
I don't see why the secondary systems should be any less critical than primary..

London cops cuff 20-year-old man for unblocking blocked websites
Re: Jolly good work.
`'Oh please, not that nonsense again; am I the only poster on these forums who has heard of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, or the DMCA? Copyright violation has been a crime in the UK since 1 January 1989, and in the US since sometime in 2000..."
I guess you have never read the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 then?
Edit: and the DMCA is a US law, does not apply to UK
Last time I read it,Copyright Infringement was a Civil offence,
it is only criminal when it causes significant harm to the copyright holder (I can't be bothered to go find the act and copy the relevant passages right now)
Edit: I looked it up, read here.. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/48/part/I/chapter/VI section 107 for what IS a criminal offence.
But the law is good, it is set out to protect copyright holders from organised infringement, but also not criminalise minor infringers. I.E. bootleggers get nicked because they cause losses and make money, sharing with a few friends is less of a worry.
The problem is that the internet has meant a single person can easily cause severe harm by sharing something to thousands of people for no effort..
What I suspect in this case, will be the proxy is set up specifically to give access to these blocked sites, and either makes money via Advertising or charges for access...
Although I still cannot figure out what crime he has committed...

Scottish independence debate: STV player flops under weight of viewers
"shouldn't we all be getting a vote then?"
Nope, or scotland would be kicked out of the union...
I myself think it would be stupid for them to leave.
but I can see some benefits to the rest of the UK if they leave...
Shipbuilding would move back to England(most likely) or Wales since the UK would have to cancel any future building of warships in Scotland,
Our nuclear deterrent would move to England or Wales.
more jobs would be created in the remainder of the Union because of those two things.
The downside is conservatives would have too much power, and power without balance from opposition is risky.

NASA tests crazytech flying saucer thruster, could reach Mars in days
"Results need replicating. That's all part of good science."
And that is the brilliant bit, NASA are duplicating the original designers results!
Lets hope this brings him funding so he can afford to get to work on it and either prove it 100% that his idea will bring the results he thinks, or not.
Maybe only 1 in 10,000 crackpot ideas will turn out a gem that changes the world, but I think all should be funded as best possible, you never know which idea will work until it does...
Look how much has been wasted on toroidal fusion, its always 50 years away yet costing us billions, so a few million £s thrown at a crackpot idea might prove itself worth it!
Brilliant!
Good going NASA for testing this out, I am really surprised they proved it really works, but very pleased of course! When no sound came out of china after they started research on it, I expected it was either they failed and didn't want to loose face or they succeeded and decided to not publish...

Recording lawsuit targets Ford, GM in-car CD recorders
Re: I sincerely
Completely Agree, and I thought that in the good ol US of A it was legal to make a backup of a CD?
In the UK I can't see this ever winning in court, even if you consider the player is designed to rip CD's. there are NO losses to the studios (people did not buy two copies of a CD before they could rip so they won't now), no losses = no crime & no losses for a civil offence.
I like our copyright laws mostly, they protect copyright without being overly zealous. (even if we do need a few exceptions added, such as copies for personal use by the purchaser & their family)
Scotland's BIG question: Will independence cost me my broadband?
Re: A little question. If you think Salmond is right do you think Farage is right also?
Well, I could have a few pints down a pub with Farage and expect a decent debate about things.
Alex Salmond is too much of a fanatic to try that with..
I hope he fails and on failing looses the next election and falls into obscurity so our country can get re-united properly and back to business!

Bad back? Show some spine and stop popping paracetamol
Re: Nothing works faster ...
I hope you find a way to fix your back problems, not just mitigate them...
but I find Tramadol works for most stuff... although many people have addiction problems when it comes to that drug, it binds to the opioid receptor.. Personally I have no problem with them, they are a handy stop gap when I get severe back pain or migraines... (but then again Paracetamol/Ibruprofen don't actually seem to work well for me and cocodamol just gives me headaches, so I have little choice in what I take when I need to..)

Re: Hm, picocells .... can those work with SIP?
"make my SIP numbers available on my mobile"
Just buy a decent mobile, mine has SIP built in (its an SGS4), so I get my sip calls on my phone no problem...
I also have a quite nice Gigaset DECT SIP phone for my office, that handles SIP & POTS calls.. it also has built in bluetooth and is basically very nice, so i'd argue against all sip handsets being crappy
One thing I would like is a way to route the POTS lines I have to SIP without needing a separate server.. also I'd like my phone company to allow UMA so i don't need their crappy femtocell when out of range!
Yorkshire cops fail to grasp principle behind BT Fon Wi-Fi network
I have to defend the police here...
Sure the police can be pedantic, power abusing thugs, but not always..
In this instance, they were right to send out the letter...
It is very likely the 'busybody' only told the police that he saw a man using someone else's wifi, not that he was using FON.
So, with that info, a blanked letter to ensure people secure their hotspots is sensible, and good advice!

Well in this case, no charges have been filed, that is the problem, surely no extradition should be granted unless a charge has been filed.. and really, the actual charges are a bit odd from my perspective, but then again all I know of it is from the media..... but I can't see how he can get an impartial trial now with all this media attention most people will have a biased opinion for or against him...
