Not much use for non root users but as a Reg reader I would assume you are. Check out LBE Privacy Guard, its a free app that does exactly this. It prompts for granular permissions when installing new apps. For existing apps it will prompt as they request permissions.

Genuinely think this is a fantastic idea but what happens when a RAM chip, for example, in the middle of the stack fails, would you have to replace the whole tower, because you couldn't break the stack, reglue and replace, that might get expensive....

Shadow Copies

Correct me if I'm wrong but this sounds very similar to shadow copies on Windows, saved me having to dig through backups a few times when a user has rung up to say they have deleted a file by accident, handy feature, no? However at least on Windows you can set a max amount of space to be used and optionally turn it off, can this be done on the mac?

Haven't tried it recently because I'm a MIUI fan but search for leedroid on xda, he's released a gingerbread version on there with sense 3.0. I don't think its on his mini site yet though.
