Microsoft on the hunt for 'serious' Windows flaw

Jason Harvey

Workaround... or better yet...

get proper IT setups. the easiest workaround of course is to disable automatic proxy detection. the next thing to do is to actually configure the proxy settings manually (preferably by the user) (if needed).

it's a case of introducing security flaws where none existed when IT interacted more with the users. All this automated stand off-ish stuff just makes it harder to secure anything properly.

of course, for the average home user, this should be disabled anyway.

Frys

the only problem with Frys is that you better know what you want or you will get sold on the most expensive worthless kit they have in stock. their associates don't really know much about anything they sell. but if you know what you want... it's a great place to get stuff. don't get their extended warranty though... it's cheaper in the long run to just take care of your kit... or know a geek that can fix the parts that break. it's more trouble dealing with their warranty service than it's worth.

re: Should the same not be said about the 'owner' of Air Force 1?...

last time I checked... Air Force 1 is the call sign for any US Air Force aircraft that the president is currently on. so would your comment be about the US Air Force because they own the call sign? or would it be about the president... and for that matter, which president. once this president is out of office, he has no claim to the "air force 1" call sign as he will not be the presiding president. And if your comment is about the Boeing plane that is usually represented as air force 1, that's owned by the US Air Force.

and if your comment is about the president, I understand why you would wish to remain anonymous as death threats to the president are not usually smiled upon.

next time, try to actually know what you're talking about, or at least convey it better so that you don't look like a foolish coward... oh wait... anonymous coward... sorry.

Re: Why

Plus, if they sell it to install on regular PCs, they would have to support that and that would be a nightmare on the level of windows. Leave it to the hackers to enable the PCs to use it and then let them support themselves. They'll still make money off the sales of the OS.

It's only racism if you're white

Welcome to the USA. If you're white, you will NOT be eligible for any benefits due to the fact that we only give help to the minority, and you're not it. You will NOT be able to talk about people based on their skin color because that is racist. You are not allowed to interact with anyone of any other race in any fashion except to help or give money to them.

Welcome to the USA where every racist bigot that's not white gets praise while a white guy that points out that some people's ideas MAY be a little off gets busted for racism and hate crimes. Welcome to the USA where you're not allowed to be a voice if you're white any more.

reminds me of college where 90% of the scholarships were available for minorities and women and the rest were available to those who could write the best novel on the application. You're white and male. You don't get help. We don't care how poor you are. Now I have a house worth of student loans to pay off, all because I'm white and male. Welcome to the USA where racism against the white man is common place, encouraged, and accepted.

Hamline seems to have this type of attitude down to a fine art. Looks like the administration needs the psychiatric evaluation to me. It also looks like racism against the white guy (if the names are anything to go from). He makes some pretty blunt observations about what is what and they call that racism? bunch of racist bigots they must be then cause observations are not racist. If I look at a box of crayons and a guy is the color of brown... I can say he's brown. if he's as black as the black crayon... you'd think he could be called black. though I used to wonder as a child why white people weren't called peach or light orange. Welcome to the USA. Welcome to the melting pot. You are not allowed to mix.

Florida man faces trial for feeding homeless

hah... too bad it wasn't texas...

there would have been even more people come out for the great BBQ and casseroles... lots of good Baptists around here... gatherings always have lots of food and they don't mind sharing with much of anyone (the food or the gospel).

as for the old fogies in Florida... looks like they care more about putting up a nice yard than dealing with reality. Feeding the homeless helps. Giving them booze/drug money doesn't.

or maybe they're wanting to provide more booze/drug money to the homeless to kill them off to help ease the tax burden on their own medicare... those greedy old retired people! (isn't that all that's in florida anyway?)

re: So What...?

"stolen by two narcoleptic chimpanzees with ADHD."

heh... great stuff there. cracking the encryption itself is pretty futile... cracking the password would be much easier. but as you pointed out... most smash and grabs don't know jack about fixing electronics so how would they know anything about how to break into an encrypted hard drive. Format and go, get some quick cash for it and have a nice day.

reminds me of one smash and grab where a speaker box and amp were nicked from the trunk of my car... they broke the right channel's RCA center pin off in the amp and cut themselves on the smashed window - used to gain access to the trunk release. if they did actually manage to get it out in working order, if they just shoved the broken RCA pin into the unit... it probably didn't work for long.

Computer glitch nixes death row appeal in Texas

liberals are funny... these comments prove it

save the trees and murder unborn children... save the murderers and strip the justice system of their ability to carry out justice. Gotta love it.

so you would have us keep all the murderers alive with the possibility that they will get parole or escape from prison one way or another and kill more people? savvy that logic... keep the murderers alive and keep killing babies that are unborn. it's beyond my ability to comprehend that level of insanity. it's no wonder the world is going to hell in a supersonic jet... we care for the criminals but not the children. I see where the priorities are and I have to say I don't like it. to coin a phrase...

"WHERE'S THE LOVE?!"

I'll tell you where the love is... it's in the wrong place. time to wake up people. Time to get a clue. It's time to care about what's right and good instead of what's bad and ugly.

dead horse? until abortionists renounce their faith in murder of the unborn, no. and I find nothing that defines being put to death as murder. Murder is defined as the unlawful and intentional killing of a human being by another. it's funny how all the liberal nut jobs want to take unlawful out. They always want to take the law out of their way when it doesn't suit their purposes instead of facing the consequences. Absolutely laughable.

Jason Harvey

@ (too many to list)

or perhaps I happen to know a bunch of lawyers here in Texas (yup, I live in Texas) that are lazy, corrupt, used to doing under the table deals and breaking all the rules and getting away with it.

and for you sensitive types out there (probably everyone who decided to bash me for being a little cynical), don't read the [rant] section... it'll just piss you off more because of your way too liberal sense of be nice to everyone and don't make anyone face the consequences of their own actions. *wink*wink*nudge*nudge*

[rant] Yeah, the guy was on death row and why? because he was convicted of a crime and received death as his sentence. If you agree with the death penalty or not is not the point, so get off your horse, it's running the wrong way. The legal system has its problems (duh!) but without it, things would be worse. If we tear down the legal system one brick at a time by bending the rules here and there, you end up with the school system where everyone is passed on to the next grade and patted on the head even if they're a complete failure. You have to draw the line somewhere. If the lawyer was really that hard up for printing time... go to a print shop and let them speed print all the legal stuff... or better yet, get it done a few hours ahead of time instead of working towards just in time. I'm sick and tired of people who want to be all nicey nice to everyone including those who need a swift kick in the arse to get their act together. People need to stand up and face the consequences of their actions. WLCOME TO REAL LIFE and all that. There's no such thing as a do-over, just a face it and learn to do better next time. Get a clue people! [/rant]

Jason Harvey

maybe... just maybe...

the judge is tired of lawyers bending/breaking the rules and is laying down the law. fancy that... a judge laying down the law... I thought that was their job. go figure.

as for the RIAA/MPAA/IFA/etc... the search engines are there to help people find stuff. If you use the search engines to find the trackers that are hosting the illegal material, you can shut down the trackers and get the users that are uploading these files. Shutting down the search engines just makes martyrs out of the search engines and more will pop up. It's a novel concept to actually go after the criminals isn't it. oh wait... they don't want to go after themselves, since they too are criminals extorting money from all their artists... err not paying their artists their due. *digresses into rant about criminal/mob type activity committed by the major music/motion picture labels*

Here's a concept that no OEM will buy

why not sell computers and let the customer buy their own OS. Then you don't have to support anything except the hardware... if it's a software issue, pass the buck to the OS maker. Then there's no OS premiums and you might actually get fair pricing. Or for those lemmings that must buy an OEM system... save the hassle of dealing with the OEM's support and build your own (except for laptops... bugger of a problem building those on your own... not enough universal stuff there to work that one out, but desktops build easy).

nothing wrong with bittorrent

in fact, the last time I downloaded a linux distro via bittorrent, it maxed out my bandwidth after about 30 minutes... ftp from mirrors have never done that. I was able to download that ISO in a few hours instead of days. It's not bittorrent that's bad. It's just another way to use the internet. What's bad is people uploading the copyrighted materials. I love how all these intellectuals always dog the protocol and search engines while apparently ignoring the fact that someone has to upload the file and break copyright first. Why don't they take down the trackers that host the illegal torrents. Use the search engines to find the illegal trackers and do something about it instead of attacking every dick and jane that downloads something. Oh wait... that would actually require thinking and detective work.

re: Nokia Battery Recall problem?

because it's easier and faster to search for a known pattern in the number or search a database of known bad numbers than to search a database of ALL the numbers. My phone had 1LI1 in it... and I could discern it all cause the ! has the little left cap on it while the I has no cap and the L is a normal L. as for O vs. 0 (zero) ... I always assume zero first when the sequenced referenced is a serial "number".

for those who question their reading abilities for the smaller than small numbers... a handy dandy reading glass can be yours for the low, low price of $xx. simply go to your local market and pick up your own magnifying glass. or better yet, borrow one from a friend. this will not however solve the problem with o vs. 0 though.

of course you could always go to your local wireless dealer and have one of them get the eye strain reading that number.
