How LulzSec pwned The Sun

Guido Esperanto
WTF?

I do agree

that there is a touch of hypocrisy, but it appears all morals are drawn at one underlying factor.

Money, or to be specific Greed.

I'll remove names from the examples to highlight my point.

Group 1 hacks various resources and obtains information -information is then made public

Group 2 hacks various resources and obtains information -information is then made public

Two scenarios completely the same right?

Group 1 does this to provide content for its newspapers which it sells and makes profit

Group 2 does it for the lulz

As soon as money is involved and people making it, that gets people angry. As long as no money is made, people will laud you for it.

t'is truly bizarre.

Bin Laden's porn stash: Too good to be true?

Guido Esperanto

and thus the lesson of aesop may be realised

governments who are found to have lied in the past to further their agenda's have all credibility removed, especially when it comes to an issue which has an intention of polarising support for Bin Laden.

I have to mimic the professors comments. While I have no qualms believing that both parties are propaganda merchants, this story is the most extreme and damaging against the Al Qaeda leader that I am automatically suspicious.

We'll know in about 50 years after countless investigations and potential de-classification of government documents.

Apple seals $66bn in Jobsian wallet

Guido Esperanto

title ye not

I' m not expert, but my thoughts lie with it being a long term investment, but there in lies the chicken and egg.

As the company performs well, its stock becomes more lucrative inviting people to purchase more and more shares in the company.

The more shares you buy, the more your lock in with Apple, given they pay no dividends. So if you want to get your money back, your only option is to sell shares.

If your a big shareholder and you're seen to be selling up, it makes other investors jittery and the too start to get nervous about their money.

the more people get nervous, then the share price starts to decline.

Id imagine its a similar instance to a 'run on the bank'

people can only get their money back if they sell shares, but if they sell shares, they could turnabout an end of the $40 share price and potentially apple itself.

dont feed the troll

For the record I'm glad you spent 699 hours being thoroughly entertained and engaged at the same time, rather than spending the time doing truly antisocial behaviours.

as for the troll, its nice for you to categorise the time spent as being "wasted in achieving fuck all"

much like your post then, and I'd imagine there are many more like it, which I'm assuming is you providing ample hot air to vent your frustration at the fact that you have no way of controlling how "productive" someone is in a manner of their choosing.

Which nicely sums up your rant....you've wasted it and achieved fuck all.

This whole drama seems to be unfolding like a version of Sim City. I think all thats needed to really put the icing on this disaster clusterfuck is for Godzilla to rise from the depths to fight some tentacled monster in the middle of tokyo.

I certainly dont make light of whats happening over in the far east but the parallels with some ethereal sim city owner are astounding.

I've been "into" a game, but as my post attests, I managed to keep my self alive during.

There are many negatives associated with gaming, all of which are compounded or resolved simply by a choice, do I socialise with people or not.

Those choices purely affect you as an individual and perception of others.

However to choose to ignore your body's warning messags and "alerts", do so at your own peril.

There wont be a shortage of these people, but I dont have any sympathy.

Interpol issues arrest notice for Wikileaks' Julian Assange

please don't tar the rest of America with your brush

You preach as though America is acting as world police, saving our nation from the blight in the Middle East, that your methods are fair and just.

Only they are not.

These jihadi's you seem to be eradicating from the world, also appears to be a bunch of innocents, reporters and the like, something you like to term "collateral damage".

Your government, while delivering its silver tongue to its thronged masses, like yourself absorbing every word that spouts forth from their lips, is also plotting behind closed doors to entrench itself as a super power, using whatever means necessary to achieve that aim, but thats alright, because its done in your name and that of the greater good?

A lot of Americans are now via the publishing of articles on wikileaks are starting to see contrasting stories, those from the articles and those from the government.

I'm not going to preach on the validity of the articles, there are few who could do so vehemently, but they are starting to allow sensible Americans to move the spotlight from where it currently is

"WAR ON TERROR" to the Whitehouse and to start questioning your government on its methods and its strategies.

That is the positive from this. The people who sense there is some wrongdoing, now potentially have support of their suspicions, they will not blindly tow the governmental line.

Thats the true power of what wikileaks has released, the governments are now starting to fear reprisals and are now directing their aim direct at Assange and his organisation, to discredit him and the site to allow for uninterrupted brainwashing.

But the seed in the minds of sensible Americans has been planted and that is enough.

Wikileaks seeks to undermine the message that past and subsequent governments have and will lie to their subjects to achieve their means.

you and they seem to forget, THEY WORK FOR YOU. THEY ACT IN YOUR NAME. If you let it continue, blood will be on your hands as well.

good points

I cringed at the "all costs" part, because while in principle, thats exactly what I want, however as you succinctly put, to what end does "at all costs" go to?.

I believe aim should be taken directly at the source of the material.(the abusers).

I also believe that servers in a jurisdiction where CP is defined should be able to be shutdown, without the quagmire of law that seems to make this difficult (if original article is to be believed), Therefore reducing a network of material.

I do agree with the blocking standpoint. It achieves nothing.

Guido Esperanto

I dont want to sound like a Daily Mail reader

but why is this so hard?

The majority stance is that CP is an abhorrent activity that must be stopped at all costs. Thats a unity on opinion, why not a unity on policy?

That scenario sounds great in a world of fluffy kittens and perpetual smiles.

Truth is the world is a great big competitive place, with one person trying to get one over on another.

Sony could never guarantee the intentions of all those using homebrew and would not any unscrupulous beings impacting on the service recieved by its *psn using customers (*thats actually a facade explanation, truth is they want to protect their profits!). As a result Sony maintain their standard by ensuring only those who comply with their rules, benefit from their services.

Its a hardball game, and while I'm not a fanboi supporter of Sony, I can see it makes total business sense. How many more walled gardens are we seeing. Apple anyone?

The same applies to other facets of our lives, sports, the law (debatable but go with me this time).

I mean what sort of uproar would there be if a paid professional footballer, realised that if he actually picks the ball up (not goalie) and runs,. he can get it to goal far quicker than kicking, passing, dribbling etc.

thems the rules for that sport, you either play with everyone else and abide by those rules, or you create your own subset of the sport and see if you can get everyone to join in.

but to summarise, you are right, it aint gonna happen.

Offending someone shouldnt be an offence, unless the person doing the offending is extremely callous and relentless, by which point it stops being offence and becomes harrassment.

The comedian Steve Hughes makes a good point about being offended. "When did sticks and stones may break my bones become irrelevant"

To paraphrase,

who is not a user nor a fan of apple products, I cannot deny the work that Steve Jobs has done.

Looking at it from a business point of view, 13 years ago, Apple were against the ropes with dodgy product lines and a business model people didnt want to be a part of.

Steve comes back and flips the company on its head.

Morally and ethically people could have issues with Apple. However, what about all the people that Apple have kept employed during these recent hardships, and no doubt have employed more in recent years.

If there is anything positive about Apple that I see, its that.

But I think for consoles, especially as games get bigger, the BR is going to be a great advantage.

one other "pristine network" aspect

one other "pristine network" aspect, which tends to be more of a negative than a positive.

Ideal networks, (hose that are governed by an ITIL framework, have oodles of political beauracracy and nothing gets approval without several signatures and ass covering) often do NOT have the ability to react to a scenario faster than those companies whose IT bods hold all the cards.

Par example, a new 0 day exploit appears for a particular brand of db, MS SQL , MS will release a patch (eventually) to plug the hole.

The corps, will perform testing to ensure compatibility and maintain performance, while the non-corps, will just install the bloody thing and hope for the best.

Sure it could go wrong and ass-holes start a puckering (those that know will understand!) but nothing gets the heart racing and blood pumping quite like unplanned server downtime.

Guido Esperanto
Thumb Up

I like this article

Its the first of the "sysadmin" ones that I've read.

From some of the comments I'm amazed at the number of fully compliant, totally kosher IT systems out there.

Goes to show that my 10+ years experience are in minority places.

I've had experiences like Trevors and while it would be absolutely great to have all the support an abilities around, its just not always possible. So you make do with what you got in the time you got it.

Some of these scenarios echo my own. Sure you can cast righteous GOD OF SYSTEMS judgement on my attempts, but you know what the job got done and stayed doing, up until I hand over. that was what was important.

I think this and the other (if they are similar) articles highlight issues all around the world in companies that want maximum return on absolute minimal investment., and sometimes it does mean cutting corners.

The good news is that its a fantastic place to learn, nothing like being in the deep end to boost your knowledge.

The downside is that when it goes wrong (and it does) there is nothing worse than the sinking feeling in your stomach about finding a resolution quickly and more importantly will resolve the issue.

Kudos Trevor for spilling the beans on some real IT departments. There are far too many sanctimonious documents and people telling you how (in green fields) to do things right, truth is, its not always like that.

Google Instant sinks raft of search controls

Guido Esperanto

on your first paragraph

to summarise google is trying to get more for doing less.

sounds perfectly like a business to me.

I find it strange that because google has nurtured its way through the web years people have become so comfortable with it, they believe it serves "their" best interests.

This could not be further from the truth. The interest is google's and their alone. As long as they can best serve the people paying them money, the "freeloaders" can just find another search engine.

And to tip my hat to google, there are no real notable "excellent" alternatives.

Every tech market loves a monopoly

Guido Esperanto
Megaphone

the problem with linux and its community

is that its trying to be all things to all people. Spreading themselves too far and too thin.

Companies like MS, Apple, Sony, Google etc succeed due to their drive in a particular direction.

Its a strategic gamble, that their research into the availability of opportunities is accurate. If they are spot on, they clean up, if they dont, some disappear into the ether (SUN) or have enough to bankroll another attempt (googlewave)

Linux does not have the benefit of that single aim or drive. The closest you have at present is Ubuntu, whose aim is clear to be a SIMPLE userfriendly alternative OS to windows.

and to some degree its working, because their prominence has been on the rise.

Monopolys succeed due to their strategic drive, which focuses the company, and the bankroll which starves other like minded companies of much needed funding.

Then once a monopoly is gained in one market, they start spreading their wings and encroaching on other markets.

Thats why you have google heading into the browser then OS market.

You had apple encroaching on and gaining a signifcant foothold in the mobile market

Sony encroached and dominated the gaming platform (PSOne/PSTwo)

it might not be liked, but t'is the way of the world.

Sony updates PS3 system software

Guido Esperanto

your car analogy makes no sense.

When starting your PS3 you are given an option "There is new firmware available do you wish to download?" That presents you with an inherent choice.

By choosing not to download a firmware you relinquish your right to access the PSN. You still OWN your hardware, you just cannot access a service that Sony OWN.

There is nothing to stop you doing whatever you want with that device, aside from the point, you will be doing so without Sony support.

If you decide to modify your Ford car as is your right and that modification causes a failure somewhere and you to crash, what do you think Ford will say?. Will they take ownership and say "yup, he modified our car, so therefore our car is at fault?"

Will they hell. They will grab the popcorn and watch from a distance.

Any modification you make to your own equipment is fine. Just dont expect support from the originating manufacturer. If that means denying you a service then its still your call.

As for being conformist, well I still see the Sun in the sky, so amargeddon isnt yet upon us.

what stinkin title

I'm a former card carrying member of the pirate club and have traded it in for a non-pirate club.

Based on my gut instinct, (which is formed around the people I've socialised with and the people I talk to online, ) the jailbreak allows 95% of those who download it to run pirated games.

There are 5% of people who will use it to satisfy some techy curiousity - all the power to them.

What do you do? Do you allow the 95% of people who will use the jailbreak for freeloading to damage the revenue stream for yours and other businesses so a minority 5% can do what they want with the console they "own"?

Ignore the megalomaniac that is Sony for one second here.

You spend money on an idea, and make it real, you intend to make money of that idea by selling the product to others. Are you going to let people stop you earning money just because they can? Or are you going to do whatever is in your power to protect your investement?

I also do not get the statement about "Sony once again treating all of their customers as criminals".

My ps3 is the original, yet the firmware updates will have no bearing on how it operates for me. I want to take advantage of the services that Sony offer so I agree to their terms and I operate by their rules. Call me conformist, but you know what, I just wanna play games.

I dont pay full whack for the titles, I prefer to wait for the drop in price, but I will pay something.

If I dont want to take advantage of those services, I have a choice. The choice is weighted heavily Sony's side, but its a choice none the less.

I hold no allegiance to Sony as a company , I just like their products over the likes of the MS offering. But I'd support MS attempt at ensuring that they score what revenue they deserve.

People may question the deserved nature of large profits, but you know what, they provided a product, we buy it. In that purchase we make that judgement about whether something is worth it or not.

Who can blame Sony or name any other corporation for continuing to maintain that success?

Who wouldnt want it to continue?
