3D xbox games

I'm assuming this means it should be able to access Live Arcade then (N+, Peggle and others), rather than the "classics" from the original xbox... obviously the brick sat in my living room that has potential to start a fire playing Gears Of War 2 can't be reduced to a hd handheld media player - so those are really the 2 only options for "3d xbox games".

@ Mark - does anybody actually implement J2ME these days?? I've not seen it in the wild for quite a long time...?

Mines the one with my iPhone 3g handset in the pocket... because that can play Xbox 3D games too (supermonkey ball?)... even if it does lack a decent camera, flash, silverlight and Java.

RE: @ Sarah

"The smoking ban is the main reason pubs are closing, but the article didn't really go there, did it?. No one does. It's so obviously the reason. What a lot of bullshit to pretend that it's an irrelevent factor."

<flame_bait_comment_for_fun>

It isn't the smoking ban killing pubs, infact I'd say it wasn't going far enough - pubs are closing down because of the misery of smokers not being able to do what they took for granted for years!! All that negative energy and frustration, fury even, is bringing the industry down, so pubs are closing... they should ban smokers, not just the smoking itself, it's for the greater good, they really don't seem to be handling what non-smokers have had to put up with for decades - an area for socialising where other people's preference seems to be annoying others.

</flame_bait_commen_for_funt>

<actual_view>

Smoking ban isn't killing off pubs half as much as the credit crunch is... to think it's smoking ban is the main reason for it all is a little silly... high pub lease prices, pub mortgages based on earnings prior to credit crunch, and the gradual slowing down of business as people stop going out every week and instead do every other week are the real killers here.

If the government want to help local pubs, make it harder for large breweries from buying up local pubs and leasing them to people who don't give a crap over private buyers who see it as their livelyhood and care, reduce the tax for licensed restaurants and pubs, and cap the amount of markup they can make on these things (I'm betting some failing pubs will keep prices the same and pocket the rest in a bid to get a cash boost, ignoring what it was for in the first place!)... and leave current tax etc the same for supermarkets rather than increasing it... we should be trying to help the country get through the recession, not making the little things people do enjoy more expensive... we arn't all boozed up scallies smashing up bus shelters on the way home, some just enjoy a wine or a beer with their meal, or a quick unwind pint in pub with friends, or to take some home and have a beer with the bbq over summer...

RE: Smoking

Well in the past there used to be seperate rooms for smokers and non-smokers, but eventually smokers took over the entire pub and non-smoking area's were either dropped or put in stupid areas (often raised platforms at the very back of the pub - you know, so all the non-smokers would be lifted into the blanket of smoke up above, and forced into the hot smoky unventilated section so they could suffer more).

Just be glad you still get the nice sunny deck-chairs in the summer - while the non-smokers either put up with it blowing in their face, or stay inside all warm and sticky again.... well for the one week of sun anyway! :)

Personally, I've started using the pub more since the smoking ban, now I don't need to change and immediately wash my clothes then grab a shower when getting home from a nice relaxing night out with friends. Meals are also alot more enjoyable... but hey, I'm not one to impose my beliefs on others, if smoking came back, I'd just stop going... not winge and moan about how hard done to I am that smokers rule to pub once more... :p

@ code monkey

Yup - exactly the reason I stopped buying DVD's in the end... add to that the reason I stopped buying CD's (when they wouldn't let me listen to the CD through my PC - up popped some crappy app to play it for me...) and this industry really only has itself to blame - it can be forgiven for the first year or two of "oh noes, how do we stop them".... but it's been about 10 years since people started really using their PC's to manage and store music and they have only just begun selling drm-free mp3's for around the same price as a cd cost in the past....

The movie industry should really learn from the music industry's mistakes, and start releasing HD versions of their films through xbox/ps3/virginmedia/netflix type things on the day of cinema releases world-wide - they will get far more revenue from it. These days I ignore the cinema release date and just wait for the HD copy to pop up for download (legit these days, not so long ago that wasn't an option though)... problem is, by time that comes I've had the film spoilt by billions of reviews and friends spoiler-whoring the whole thing to me... not sure if anybody else feels that way, but our local cinema's seem to be filler with smelly teenage girls or chav lads shouting/giggling/banging throughout the film... hardly the "experience that counts"... I have far better sound/vision equipment at home... without the idiots.

huh??

""We didn't build the engine around vehicles," said Kaplan. He added that other games like to tack on vehicle combat (while describing, but not naming Halo) where "you can tell they didn't know what they were doing with vehicles, and it felt all floaty and things didn't shot right. The same mistake happened in World of Warcraft," he said."

If he is talking about Halo 3 then he obviously hasn't played it properly - the engine for getting in/out of vehicles and using them is fiddly at first, but it quickly becomes instictive and in online battles (with 3 anyway) they are an essential part of the combat and the game is better for it... I'm not a Halo fanatic, but to claim their vehicle system is crap is a little rich... if he's talking about the previous ones I don't remember problems with 2 either, can barely remember anything from 1 though... so I guess he could mean that, but comparing a game from almost 10 years ago to his latest creations is just daft.

Played WoW for about a month last year... found it fairly confusing early on, far to many random names that all sounded the same and therefore found it hard to follow any story-pattern, not real character development either - maybe they should be writing/plotting out the game play more, not less... then again, I'm not really a MMO fan, so it could be I just didn't "get it"... which is fine, each to their own...

RE: Bloody Trekkies.

I would class myself as a trekkie... but I love bsg... infact, anybody I know who likes BSG likes ST too... except the die hard BSG fans, who claim BSG was more "real" and not classic "crappy" scifi like ST.... so I think the opposite is mainly true, it tends to be the die hard bsg fans that have an inferiority complex against ST's popularity or something....

Personally, I liked the rawness and depression of bsg, same as DS9 was my fave ST... bsg ending confused the hell out of me, but the person who suggested anders to be God, and the time travelling twist has my thanks, because now in my mind at least the ending makes alot more sense... I've suggested the time-travel twist to repeating and endless looping to bsg die hards, and they essentially spat in my face because "BSG isn't ST, they don't do silly scifi - it's a cop out" etc etc... personally... it tidies almost all of it up... it explains why constellations for Earth 1 are exactly the same as ours, why there was a north american continent on Earth 1 too, and goes a bit to explaining why we have the mythology of "All this has happenned and will happen again" blurb.

What is doesn't explain though, is why a star pilot like Kara didn't check to see if the number's she took from the music weren't jump coordinates straight away... it would be the first thing to check... what the hell was she trying to do with the numbers in the first place?!?! My only theory is possibly something that comes from a stargate/startrek way of thinking - that the numbers wouldn't lock/engage/gotoearth until the singularity somehow lensed the jump.... but as my friend pointed out, it's bsg, not startrek... they don't like too much science... I mean, c'mon, they had FTL drives and colonised several star systems... but couldn't cure cancer, and everybody was addicted to smoking.... wtf???

hmmm

seems to me that everybody complaining about the iPhone's shortcomings on here don't own one. I dropped my N95 for the iPhone, and aside from the camera, there really isn't alot I miss from N95, and recently I was forced to fix my girlfriends N95 (the fragile screen cracked, this is after the sliding mechanism broke, and after the phone had an odd "charging" bug with most recent update btw, so they aren't all stable phones).... thing that struck me is how hard it was to get back into the thing... Symbian is very basic and fiddly, even if it does tick all boxes on a tech sheet.

The iPhone isn't perfect, but neither is any phone, and what the phone does, it does very well... which is less than I can say for any other phone I've owned, other than maybe my old 3210...

Tech support to the rescue.... just tick the "Recently Purchased" or "Recently Played" smart playlists to your iPhone sync music options... it's THAT hard...

Some would be stressed if it ignored specific options the user already set and did what it want, then people would be complaining about how it used up valuable space for music you didn't want on the phone, why won't it just do what they say?! ;)

Personally, flash doesn't excite me, nor Java... just allow sideways texting, cut&paste, and MMS... I would be more than happy for their engineer to come and upgrade my camera resolution/optics too.. but I highly doubt that would be included in the free upgrade! :(

I hate Virgin Media... even more so than BT... but I'm being forced to move over to Virgin at my new address in a week or two, basically because I can't get faster than 1mb at the new place using adsl, the exchange isn't adsl2+ yet, yet in a villiage area, Virgin have a fibre cabinet on my road, and will offer me 20mb broadband, mid-range tv package, and a phone at less cost than bt line rental and basic broadband with o2... even with their 75% 5-hour throttling should I go over 3gb at peak, that will still be 5 times faster than what BT have to offer..... it's a disgrace really... and it's no wonder they are losing customers!

RE: iPhone, for business users?

Actually it's not so bad for business use.... I found writing emails on Blackberry and the N95 more of a pain than an option, but I can shoot off fairly decent sized emails on the iPhone most days... I rarely cut&paste in emails though.

I've installed a few applications on the thing that enhances it's usefulness, not fart applications, but a freelance project-timer/invoice application called Jobs, Things is pretty decent for busy days, a couple of web-designer tools on there too are pretty awesome.. calendar syncing is fairly decent now (I don't touch mobileme btw)... voice recorder applications, vile vault applications, MyRail is useful if you use public transport and need to get around london between business'.

Just because kids use it to p*ss commuters and family off with prankster app's, doesn't mean there is nothing else of use on there. You quickly become quite nippy at typing on the touchscreen too... something I wasn't sure about until after the first few days.

Personally, I wouldn't mind owning one of these... I've been using my Macbook pro for a while now, and not had a single problem except having too little ram in the first instance.

In this case I will make the same decision I did with my macbook purchase - look at amount Apple charge for extra RAM/HDD size... look at difficulty of adding my own, decide if I need new tools/degree to do it.... and spec my machine accord to whether extra extortionate price of extra stuff outways whether I can be ars*d... but if price was the real concern I'd probably be buying a generic PC and putting osX86 on it...

So, if you want a machine that's upgradable/hotswappable then buy another product.... if you want something that looks pretty and sits on your desk doing mac-like things, then buy the mac.... ffs... it's not like they are MAKING you buy the thing... as much as they wish they could, you have control over your own purchasing decisions.
