Re: "an unnamed man in Darwin"
Took the words right out of my mouth.
Do we know which end he inserted?
Re: of course it has to be three films.
Isn't Jackson one of the few directors who gets to call the shots and tell Hollywood "I'm doing it how I damn well want"?
Re: ICS fail points docking
When it starts to matter?
Re: I wonder why...
That was 3 films for 3 long books... each longer than The Hobbit.
On the one hand I'm sad it'll span 3 years to see all the films, on the other it would be nice for a change to see a proper, deep film version that pleases fans - provided they get the extra info from real books and don't just make up a backstory they like.
Maybe I'll wait until all 3 are out and watch them together.
@fandom
If you really think lack of SD is a reason WP hasn't dominated, you've even stupider than you appear. As for multi-core... you can't even TELL if a phone has it without getting overly technical, you blithering idiot.
What a fun thread this is, ACs arguing with each other (or themselves who can tell?) because they're too scared to admit they [dis]like WP.
Re: A snowballs chance in hell
SD is allowed in WP8, and so are larger resolutions and multi-core. So in that case yes.
And all those things are not seen as deficiencies to mainstream users - WP7 is very solid and WP8 looks like it should be even better.
Re: Who wrote this?
Perhaps since they're tech journalists they don't have degrees in economics.
Re: Really?
What content they have in the UK and US is very different, you burk. Most of NF's users aren't in the UK and neither are their shareholders.
Re: completley missed the 2010 Olympics
Hardly anyone watches the winter Olympics though, do they?
Any Yanks here - how big a deal is Olympics (summer or winter) in the USA? Does the country go crazy for it and have massive TV coverage like the BBC does in the UK?
Seems fair
It was seeming overly harsh BUT the fact part of it is served and he should be able to take a place at uni makes it seem reasonable. IF he ends up having uni offers retracted then I'll swing my opinion back the other way though :)
Uptime always has to be balanced against cost. Twitter (you seem to have a spelling problem) might have decided the remote possibility of a double failure was better than the cost of a more redundant system since it's not a website which actually matters.
Of course an arrogant techy arsehole wouldn't know about things like business costs, only about insulting people they think they are superior to.
Re: 50MB?
A Flash SWF isa compiled binary and therefore more efficient than encoding the same functionality in HTML/JS.
But don't let the facts distract you.
Re: this is getting silly
El Reg is the 1-stop-shop for hating Apple, Amazon, Google AND MS. It's just cool to not like things which are popular.
When Opera and Linux inevitably dominate computing, they'll be mocked equally.
Coincidences
Is it really coincidence all these bank screw-ups are happening at the same time? It seems a bit fishy.
Re: Store vs Store
"I suspect that he's less worried about a competing store, more being railroaded until MS have the only store on the platform."
Being able to buy software is far too ingrained for MS to take it out anytime soon - even Apple don't do that. Of course WOA is different but that's a special case more like the iPad where this IS the way things work, on a new type of device. But a PC and buying software from any vendor just go hand in hand and realistically even MS don't have the clout to make that happen.
Not Like Newell is Biased
He's not worried it will destroy PC gaming, only that it will hurt his company's profit margin... suddenly Valve and MS are in direct competition.
Re: Windows Users
Were the Win/Mac versions of Safari identical in all cases anyway?
Re: The problem has been tethering
50Mb should be fine for using it for 'emergency' internet only. You should be able to check your gmail once a day on that for instance,
Considering it's free worldwide, this is still a massive bonus in my view... the browser isn't THAT bad.
"Share with no-one" == just don't upload to FB.
No because you might want to look at it yourself or show it to people face-to-face, or have it uploaded for making public at a later date.
Re: Archive problem
Did you not bother to read the article? He isn't bothered how to save a safe copy - but a way to PRESENT the stuff on the web so he can see it and let others do so. Making a backup on DVD means everytime something new takes over, you have to re-upload them and set it all up.
Re: Facepuke
I do love it when someone makes themselves look like a retard by calling someone else one.
the organisation will take care to protect individuals' personal details
Well that's OK then.
Not waterproof?
It looks like it should be and if it's showerproof I think they should have gone that bit further.
Re: Not bad...
The only interesting thing about this post is that it helps us establish a ratio for the foaming at the mouth "Android users are better, Apple users are iSheep" types to the "Apple are great, Android users are arrogant dicks" types.
Apparently about 5:2.
Re: Yay
Luckily for Amazon and the rest of us, there are more people in the world than you.
Re: The real story is
WP7 is very good. WP8 could be wonderful (or terrible of course) - and since all major operators are selling WP7 in the UK your comment doesn't even make sense... operators would sell WP8 to cover their bases.
Re: Hmm.
Well they have to keep the negativity balanced. In fact dissing Nokia puts them on a par with Apple, MS and Google which they should be pleased about!
Windows 8 is very fine on a touch device and gives Microsoft a real crack at the tablet market
Which is the whole point. W7 is great for enterprise or PC; W8 is designed to challenge iPad.
Re: Epic FAIL, and no messing
Damn right. Replace them all with techy know-it-all teenagers, that'll solve everything.
Re: Gotta love those Frogs.
Then type in "torrent of rain" and hit search.
Anyway this "it could mean something else" argument is bogus... you could equally say "they shouldn't stop 'blow job' in autocomplete because that's the name of my favourite band".
Are they really banning all results containing the word "torrent"?
No. Read the article.
Re: Oh god
Don't care - I can buy a Kindle book and read it on my Kindle or my PC or my iPad or even on my WinPhone. It's a fairly open type of closed :)
Re: Sigh.
Wow. It must take really BIG blinkers to believe the only people expressing positive feelings to MS stuff are paid to do so.
Re: Microsoft have Windows Phone fans left?
I bought my first Lumia last week, knowing full-well I can't put WP8 on it. I couldn't give 2 hoots - I don't want loads of stupid games. It was under half the cost of an iPhone and on a par with low-end Androids, which several reviews had it beating.
Re: Further proof
Or it was a practice Galaxy by a Creator ;)
No it makes you a sanctimonious jerk.
People aren't jumping on those who don't use the site; they're jumping on those who like to make a song and dance about how and why they're not using the site.
Why is failure to grow a failure?
They stopped growing because they got everyone* in the main countries they operate in. Why is holding steady at a billion users seen as a failure?
*obviously not literally but if you look at a key target market like student/20s, they really don't have much left to aim for.
Re: Let Twatter be next
What a lot of bitchy whining kids the El Reg anti-everything cohort are. You'd fit in great on FB.
Re: You're Welcome, Mr. Zuckerberg
Now you just need to leave this forum too.
Presumably this is why WindowsPhone surprising runs so well on low-spec hardware... not that MS suddenly learned how to write fast code, but that Android is a bit slow compared to a C/C++-based OS?
What about iOS though - isn't OBJ-C also a fast compiled language?
I want my music to sound at least as good as a CD and ideally better
On a smartphone/device you listen on a bus, good luck.
Re: How is it crippled?
I have an iPod and I put songs on it from Windows. I don't have iTunes installed.
And, iTunes is (allegedly) much better these days.
Re: Off topic, facial recognition
You can set it so tags of yourself in pictures require your authentication/review, IIRC.
Re: Absorbs light rays completely...
Not really. In real life it WOULD look odd because you could walk around it and it would always just be a 'hole'... whereas in photos it wouldn't look odd. e.g. the Douglas Adams references...
SIM
Why does the reviewer think not using a MicroSim is any kind of advantage? My new phone uses Micro and my operator simply sent me a free new SIM to replace my existing standard one.
Re: Fab phone. Dinosaur price.
That's like saying because you can buy a TataCar for £8, the game is up for BMW.
So, it's like a phone that can't make phone calls or take pictures or use the internet w/out wifi?
Yeah that'll never take off. Apart from the millions of iPods sold every year of course, but clearly only iDiots buy them so you're right, it's a market without any consumers.
Re: Absorbs light rays completely...
Um it would just be black. Not going to make a great photo :)
What about other properties such as stress/strain/etc?
The whole "can't upgrade to WP8" issue
Does anyone know enough about the technical side to explain if this is a real technical issue? Is it potentially something you could do yourself - in fact can WinPhones BE rooted/jailbroken? We've seen you can put Android on an iPad for instance, can you on a WinPhone?
Serious answers only please ;)
