Re: Barnard's Star, again?

try some research??? er, gimme a G, gimme an O, and another O......

"Barnard's Star has been the subject of much study, and it has probably received more attention from astronomers than any other class M dwarf star due to its proximity and favorable location for observation near the celestial equator"

Re: no need for ftl

the problem with that, is you may find by the time you get there, in a few centuries, that it has already been colonized by earths future generations, who have have managed to get FTL working... :)

Re: The Plinkett Equation

yeah Maybe, but the real culprit is a bad script, a producer desperately trying to make a 'bam boom' movie, while totally ripping up the science manual in the process, and mixing in a few other bits to make the old trekkers happy... ending in a utter mess, that does not seem to have any proper relation to the original!!

BUT the teenagers loved it, good hi-tech stuff, intrigue, explosions, villains, etc... yes, take out a few ST references, call it some other space name, I bet most would not know the difference!!!! :)

Trekkers.. you have to realise, most of you are nearly dead, and the teenagers want something a lot more dynamic and quick..

check the box office.. it made more than twice the takings of 'Voyage Home'...

Re: Interesting article

"Star Trek isn't Sci-Fi" ?? DO check the definition of 'Sci-Fi' please..

"Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginary but more or less plausible (or at least non-supernatural) content such as future settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, parallel universes, aliens, and paranormal abilities. Exploring the consequences of scientific innovations is one purpose of science fiction, making it a 'literature of ideas' "

Please explain why this description does not apply to Star Trek... :)

Or are you one of those strange people that think that some 'four wheeled engine powered' things on the road are not real automobiles???

Re: buy better equipment

you are just over complicating things.... (geek much?? :) )

do research for a decent panasonic TV, you wont need to worry about changing channels, etc... mine have all been renumbered to 2 digits, and put in easy to navigate/remember positions... :)

illiad

@Rabbit80

so, you're oop north, then?? we had all that retuning stuff, all through last April in London... welcome to the rest of digital UK TV!! :)

Note the 'Republic of Ireland' is separate, they are only part of the 'British Isles'.. :D

illiad

Re: Agree with Sky on this one

'filtering or navigation by' ???? simple English please?? something more complex than the following???

Sky allows you to choose by music, religion, sport, documentary, etc...

most Freeview enables you to change or remove program numbers, and remove whole sections by broadcast type- ie, analog (your old video, and even sky, has one!!) , pay per view, data and radio..

illiad

well *I* dont worry about changes..

thats why I bought a *decent* (ie, not stupidly cheap!!!) PVR and TV... and months ago had already customized what number most channels sit, for ease of use/ remembering... those numbers stayed put, I just had to scan and check to *exclude* yet another 'advertising' channel... :/

Re: No mention of video

the problem is, most young protesters don't even know the difference between flash & swf for web-pages, or even just a standalone player for them!!! :/

as for playing videos without flash support, have you not heard of 'streaming video', that youtube uses to play on Iphone??

illiad

Re: Ads

yes, you wanted flash to die, now guess what you got???? a replacement, and the whole set of problems that you had with flash!!!!! LOL ROFL LMFAO.... :D

illiad

Re: It's a monitor.

erm , surely the spec for a 'tablet' is portability and independence of external power sources????

Why is the iPhone so successful? 'Cause people love 'em

illiad

ROFL..

the person who buys a simple ford car is happy with it, it does what he wants... just like the standard IPhone buyer... they do not want all the tech stuff, just a reliable phone...

The person who buys a fancy sports car wants something that will do a whole lot more than just travel a few mile to the shops every day!! and then he will complain about mileage, etc, etc...

Just like the more demanding mobile phone buyer, who is usually expecting something as capable as his home computer!!! dream on..... :/

Please wake up, and realize the massive difference between the capability & upgrade ability of other phones..

Apple has a total of 4 actual phones, the latest is almost a year old... plenty of rumors, but no *touchable* version 5 yet...

Samsung has *seventeen* 'coming soon' phones, nokia has 8... Come ON, apple, spend some of your lawyer money on getting your phones more versatility and choice!!!

illiad

@AC 01:38 GMT Re: but I thought I just read that Samsung sells more phones than Apple.

...because they believed the people who said it was good... and then found their music is locked, the apps are limited, they have found the existing model a bit cramped...and there is little or NO upgrade path...

How about it, Apple??? why not an 'economy' model, a 'power user', model, a 'HD multimedia/ HIFI nut' model, a 'slimline' model, a 'photo expert' model????

These are provided by other manufacturers, why cannot apple do this?? If Nokia had not made such *really* bad decisions in the past year, and embraced Linux, big resolutions and screens, we would be talking about them, not samsung and android....

illiad

Re: Well..

WTH are you not using an IPad, then??? this has far better screen and resolution for the job, unlike the very cramped screen of the iphone....

Re: Er, what? yes, damned right...

yes, that is the main problem with large computing power, attached to a payment system... would you trust it with your cash??

and yeah, suppose it does all 'take off' and NFC is available right out in the fashionable holiday spots, where standard clothing is a bikini/ trunks and a straw hat for sun protection, while lazing out in the bay, by the floating bar.... how would you pay? your credit card in your pocket, not ruining your look, or risk damaging/ losing your phone underwater??

Re: While we're at it ... stock JB on a Nexus S?

could it be it needs flash????

Flash Player to vanish from Android store on Wednesday

illiad

...

yes, well BBC is rather stupid that way... I would bet that an argument between them and adobe, is why they have withdrawn flash!!! :)

James 100: an even bigger irony, is that once everyone has got used to using 'the flash alternative' the same "malware excreting programmers" will just continue merrily on... Just like IE, now at Version 9.... :/

Have you got an 'adblocker'??? try adding *.swf to it, and see how many sites still work... I find it is only the video ones (except youtube, that does work, but needs an iphone...), but I will test further... :)

illiad

Re: And all this is a textbook reason why...

durbster: hmm, good post.. what do you think of the 'alternatives' above?? I guess we will have to wait and see if anything better comes out.. it rather depends on the take up of JB....

illiad

Re: The bigger picture

"And to all those expecting a world without Flash to be one with no animation or advertising, you're utterly deluded. You'll still get crappy animations and adverts, they'll just be done in {whatever takes its place} "

Damn right! if you are wondering what, I'll fill in *research* you should have done... :)

DO NOTE that thes are quite old now, and may have been updated or superseded..

illiad

Re: BBC iPlayer and the Apple-only streams

"when you blank the screen to save power, or even if you focus on a different window, the audio will not instantly stop!"

No, that is NOT flash's fault! - it is the ancient IOS 's blame, with no multi tasking!!

no, it wants you to use all its *other* far more capable stuff... RTSP, AIR... you need to look around a bit more... :)

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean review

illiad

Al Taylor: thanks! :)

Great to hear from someone with brains (seriously)!! :)

Thats very interesting about those links... I guess it is too early to see what will happen, but there is some recent chatter about getting something working, beyond saying 'its wonderful' etc..

As I said elsewhere, we'll have to wait until after aug 15, to see what happens, and how many devices are nearly or fully bricked by desperate geeks, and how many just 'work'.. :P

thats the thing that gets me steamed, peeps talking about stuff before it is even 'put in the oven', never mind baked...

I think the worst example was the rip of the new 'hulk' movie in 2000, that was so bad, it was most likely copied straight from the studio's editing suite, unfinished!!!

illiad

Re: Android FINALLY catching up to iOS

see my post in answer to AC 24th July 2012 13:21 ... who may just be lazy, or found the links dont work... :/

please try them, all the reviewers wont bother! It will be a few months until JB is out for 'old' handsets anyway.... :( :(

meanwhile, if you are a newb like me, and dont want to 'root' - then 'astro filemanager' gives you an easy way to back up your apps.. :)

this is in the 'it always works, dunnit??' class... the same as PC wifi... blissfully happy, until it all goes wrong.. another good use of android, to see whether some nutter has kicked the router, or messed up the PC...

Re: Hmph.. so many things MISSED OUT!!!

NOT if the reviewer had actually shown this!!!

go tell them to say, "yes, youtube works, as well as others... " because NO-ONE has said any thing like this, not even casually on the browser review!!!!!

now go on, be of **public service** and try these on your nexus... :) then I can tell all my friends they are stupid, video DOES work on JB, so go and get it!!!! :)

they missed a detail...

The *main* plus about a text, is that it does not waste the recipients time.. you dont HAVE to answer it immediately, unlike most voice calls.. - you will get a silent notification, and then you can answer back when the boss isn't looking, or when you have finished what you were doing.. :)

the content?? supporters may want you to think that... (in UK) but the law says you only have to have a TV , it does not matter if you have not switched it on for a month.... :/

Detector vans??? nope, they got you when you bought the TV, or when you last paid the license...:) a few stories about police getting a search, to find no TV anywhere!! :)

As for TV vs Broadband... It was tried, but failed due to problems with licenses for good content, that effectively starved it of an audience.. go ahead, just try to find a *full* episode of startek, farscape, stargate, friends, etc... LEGALLY!!!! :)

"but the shift to webmail has been underway for a decade" yes, that the 'fashionable' thing...

*everything* is great, lovely...until one day... INTERNET IS DOWN!!! how are you going to do all you important stuff then??

Y'know that doc you received on webmail only last night at 2am, thinking , I can barely see, I'll do it tomorrow..

- now if you were using a POP email client, like eudora, (yes, its FREE Open source now, for win, linux, and appple..)

- It would load all your mail & attachments when doing the mail check, so that important Doc would be sitting in the 'attachment folder' ready to be printed out... no more internet needed... :)

Android Jelly Bean won't get Flash Player

illiad

Re: Don't know why people are complaining

too right!! I guess it will be another year or more for jelly to actually be available, *plenty* of time for alternatives to be made, adobe to realize they ate losing cash, and attempt another u-turn, or even try suing google for producing what it should have, buying it , and releasing it as the new thing to produce buggy media with!!!

illiad

Re: Die, flash, die

oh yeah, dont blame Adobe for how bad and crashy flash is...

once the new 'google media player format' has taken over 70% of flash use....

- those SAME 'flash hackers' will take it, and make it as BAD as adobe flash was!!!!!!!! :)
