Here's the $4.99 utility that might just have saved Windows 8

illiad

Re: The end of XP?

I remind you about the 5% who have any clue about the internals of windows... many are using xp due to win7 cost, and usually have only 1 or 2 pcs... much more are using win7 happily, due to network needs, driver support, etc.. try connecting your brand new smartphone to XP by usb, and you will see why... :)

I think it is the desperate drive by shops to get new stuff, to get more customers, that seems to have blinded them to the fact win8 is for *touchscreen* PC only... 'I see dumb people' indeed... duh, it must be better, is new...

Dear Facebook: I heard the news today, oh boy

Elmer Phud - Re: Google+ over Facebook any day of the week.

Elmer Phud: and how is that different to how Facebook owns you??? No seriously, do tell!!

Congratulations, copyright infringers: You are the five per cent

illiad

problem with the stats...

the sad fact is, 90% of all internet users have NO CLUE about computers and 'net... they either just have it for their children to use, and the phone package deals, or just for email & Facebook etc.. they dont bother with knowing what all the other stuff is!! a friend mine said he had lost his internet - turns out he had somehow changed settings and lost the IE icon... that is all...

that leaves the 10%, half of which only vaguely know stuff.. and the top part of that is guys like me, who repair stuff, and help out the others for a fee.... :)

illiad

Re: OK, case study....

Damned right!!!!! If you pay *good money* for a product, it should not be laden down with adverts!!

The same is true with DVDs - ten years ago, you rented a film, and it went straight to the main feature -

Today, you buy a DVD, to find there are adverts for other stuff, including other films, that you CANNOT skip over!!!

If that is not a reason to download or buy a pirated disc **without** ads, what isn't ???

except that most bacteria, etc. will not survive the cold and dry conditions that ATMs normally experience.. and |I would not be surprised if the 'in bank' ATMs are regularly cleaned(just like all the other furniture :) ), and even the window cleaner gives the outside ATM a brush-over... :)

Re: Microsoft is going away sooner...

ROFL !! no chance of that!!! there are just **too many** idiots who *still* dont have a clue about stuff!!

eg.. a real coversation, would you believe he is a banker???

where's my internet??? / wheres google???

its on your screen, look for explorer..

huh????

{groan} the blue E...

what?????

{goes to his computer} see that? {points to icon}

uh why didnt you say that blue thingy??? where's my google???

{gawd how is this no brain alive?} - puts home page to google..

thanx mate..

illiad

Re: Windows 8 - It should go away.

the problem with 'MS gets it all' is that it is NOT the 'vaguely intelligent' who can find this site, but the millions of CLUELESS who *believe* what the sales men say... or are at the mercy of trying to find a good enough PC, to get win8 hard sell due to DUMB plus 'greedy for their commission' salesmen....

The biggest reason for staying with win7, is that many companies 'upgrade cycle' is *much* slower that MS.. my company's board of directors seems to have employed a pinhead who believer our min spec should be a 3 GHz multi-core.. and I can tell 1.5 dual core is well good enough for the minimal use it has, especially as it will only let us use ADSL that they got a cheap deal on that rarely goes above 5Mb/s !!

Re: Flash!!!!

ROFLMOA ROFLMAO .... Are one of the LAZY devs that wont stop moaning about flash, BUT wont bother to make a decent easy to use replacement for it using 'html5' ??? or just one of those idiots that thinks it is just so easy????

If you have done ANY research, you will know 'html5' is only a very small part of the solution ... look at how they do without flash on the iphone.. it is more 'streaming video' using a remote flash server, all provided by youtube, adobe, etc... until you find a website that does not use it... this is why there is STILL plenty of help for jelly bean users to get flash loaded... :)

What a Liberty: Virgin Media in buyout talks with telecoms giant

illiad

"I know exactly what you mean. Check your bandwidth on speedtest and it shows me getting full speed. Try to actually download anything real or stream video and you get 1Mb max...

The speedtest sites need to start using other protocols than simple http port 80 as clearly that's not being throttled. it wouldn't surprise me if they just hardcoded these speedtest sites in so that they are never throttled."

If you dont thrust them, try a REAL download from http://distrowatch.com ... :) make sure you have a *proper* speed monitor like netmeter first...

the point about Thunderbirds, is it is NOT going to be 'original'!!! unless you mean EXACTLY like the original???

If you are an old fan of StarTrek, the new 'prequel' film ripped most of the heart out of it.. the kids loved it of course, but not the fans...

Faster-than-disk 1TB USB on sale soon... but if you lose it, you've lost £2k+

illiad

oxymoronic?

'Faster-than-disk' does not equal '530MB/sec and 445MB/se respectively through a 6Gbit/s SATA interface'

It SHOULD equal **6Gbit/s** on a SATA interface...

BUT a proper thumbdrive with an esata plug is still waiting for 'powered esata sockets'... :/

there are many specs, but in real life, it takes about 2 seconds to to transfer 30MB files from my sata cardreader to disc, and 20 secs from usb..

Re: Christmas Lights vs. Room Lighting

LOL :D you havent been spending enough on your decs then!!!!

illiad

I think you are mistaken... have a look at the stores, and see how many sell what type of bulb... due to demand, they have to stock many varieties, even the small halogens, for those with 'designer lighting' homes... you will find that many people think first of the cost, then design (usually constrained by the thoughts of the designer/builder of their new home!! :( )

Craptastic analysis turns 2.8 zettabytes of Big Data into 2.8 ZB of FAIL

illiad

loads of crap data...

most 'big data' is only proprietary stuff like pics, word docs, etc...

Trying to index HUGE quantities of data files takes roughly twice or more the space!! ( I am only guessing here based on work I did 10 years ago... ) - your data, a copy for check, a HUGE CRC to check, plus massive pointer file to track what data point is what....

go and find a good quality duplicate checker, that checks the WHOLE file, and give it 10Gb of files to work on.,... even todays powerful home PC's would start to choke... :) :)

Windows Firefox stiffs Adobe Flash, plays H.264 YouTube vids

illiad

Re: h.264

"One thing I don't understand, why pirates continue to convert the material they want to share to something else than mpeg4. As that is the format/containers the original source had from the very beginning. Kind of stupid but what would you expect."

there are **lots** of other codecs that devs love much more, that compile better, cheaper, etc, etc... NO that means **in their mind**, mostly.. :/ if you d/l a lot of *non-youtube* vid, go check how many are the above...

I find FLV (using AVC / AAC) is the most prevalent, followed by WMV and AVI.. but some are just renamed!!! get 'mediainfo' for the real story!! :)

this link also shows FLV uses most of the codecs talked about here...

Re: Note on Sagan

huh, if god does exist, he is a very evil, totally ignorant one... just think of all the very good spiritual people that die in awful ways...

Just remeber a good quote " anything sufficiently advanced, looks like the work of god, to a primitive society" especially if they do not know any truth about how the human body works...

My answer is, that god *may* have existed, but saw how stupid and evil people got, ignoring and totally changing his teaching, to just make money out of peoples suffering, etc, that he gave up on his 'project', and went away to another place, just leaving the mess behind....:(

Google to devs: Fragmenting Android is AGAINST THE RULES

illiad

"fragmentation"???

How about a PROPER definition????? this cannot be 'made law' until this happens... >:-(

The only one that seems to fit is the predominant geeky one.. corrections, clarifications, please...

E.G...

Do you mean that they have different specs of handset, and many different versions of the OS, with different GUI addons???

Then look at the standard windows PC!!! lots of different specs, from 10 year old PC still running win98, a server still running win2000, lots more running the basic version of XP, some with shell customizations, even many APPLE laptops running a partition with XP, then win7 with many customizations, oh and dont forget, the home, home premium & professional versions of the above!!!!

so WHY has everyone not called all THAT fragmented??? answers please, or at least stop the idiocy... :)

illiad

Re: time travel?

LOL, so little is known, that you could say just about anything.... :/

If you fell asleep during the lecture, the problem about going even near to a black hole, is that gravity has a high gradient, ie it changes very fast!!

going feet first...

note the numbers here are only for demonstration, not reality!!!

your feet will feel the the force of 100G, your middle will feel the force of 10 G, your head will feel the force of 2G... end result, your body will be stretched out to more than 100 times its length... think you could survive that???

so IF you could time travel, etc, the only thing that arrives would be atoms or human soup!!!

Re: Sheesh!!

yeah.... simple really!! :D

1) find some 'exotic material' (eg unobtainium ) and make a ring out of it... Hey, Alcubierre has the specs!!

2) wait a few million years, to get enough antimatter to power it..

3) find a way to keep it supplied with power, while not destroying all it accidentally touches...

wot you waiting for?? get constructing!!! :) :)
