Three-yaarrgh! Major UK mobile network's data goes down

F'tangF'tang

Online Sat Nav

Google and Apple Maps didn't work, but I was saved by NavFree which worked just fine offline...

(Realised 3 was off at about 7:15 am as I went to download the Metro in North London, and was off in the City till about midday)...

Re: Hmm...

That's the good thing about un-censorship... It makes it easy to identify the lowlifes who feel smug about being able to joke (lamely) about someone taking their own life.

Cutting edge radical comedy... Right on kids...

How one bad algorithm cost traders $440m

F'tangF'tang

Computer says Buy

The electronic order book trading system (in UK its SETS SEAQ etc...) Just takes market orders for buys and sells from the market makers (or market manipulators as they are sometimes affectionately known), or any joe public with a trading account who wants to be put "on the book" to trade in a particular stock.

All the software does, is match buyers and sellers. It makes a "touch" price (the best price offered to either buy or sell) of a stock based on the orders on the book, listing hierarchical best prices offered by the sellers one side, and the buyers on the other.(Bulls buy, bears sell... ish). Identical prices are ranked by the time the order is submitted to the market. Usually, you would never want to buy at market price, as 90% of the time, when you get a live quote to either buy or sell, you will get an improvement on the market price (by a large % with some illiquid AIM type stocks)... getting inside the spread as it is known...

You will usually see market makers on both sides of the book, being both a buyer, and a seller...Obviously at predetermined levels, so as not to electronically trade with themselves...

You can see it all happen real time with Level 2 data, with the columns of all the buyers and sellers on the book and the prices being asked, and the trades getting executed and removed from the order book as they are completed... as opposed to Level 1 which just lists the highest Bid and the lowest Offer price with no visibility of the orders below the touch price (market depth)...

All good fun, but sadly not far different to going to a casino nowadays...

Comet in bad way after big losses

F'tangF'tang
Unhappy

Bill Haley

I would much rather shop at Comet than DSG... I think I have an innate hatred for the Dixons, Currys and PC World group and would struggle to hand over any money to them...The online prices at Comet are the same as instore, and when I needed a new Dyson vacuum cleaner, they were by far the cheapest, by a hundred quid, and I got a £65 cleaning kit free... yaay... They also phone you an hour before they turn up, so you dont have to remain housebound waiting for them...

Saying that, I usually prefer to buy online rather than instore, so that you get the seven day distance selling regulations to return the item if you want...

Its going to get harder to actually touch the item you want to buy before you buy it soon, as the online marketplace kills off the bricks and mortar way of shopping...

How to choose the right screen size

F'tangF'tang

sixty

I had a last generation Pioneer 50", and the difference between Sky SD and HD was minimal to say the least (might be because the Pioneers had pretty good inbuilt scalers)... With the Pioneer 60" it was much more noticable... HD is good, and I have it...but I could live without it...

Its strange how they shrink tho... I took the tape measure out more than once to double check the size...

Thats sitting 10ft from the screen btw...

O2 Poo

Apparently the exchange in "East London was vandalised"...

I managed to get that little snippet of info... As well as one customer services rep hanging up on me when I asked how I can remotely retrieve voicemail, and another rep telling me to call 07802090100 to retrieve it (it turned out to be the number to retrieve voicemail when abroad... And they text you number which is handy when you cant receive texts...), being told its not o2's fault, but they didnt know what the fault was or when its likely to be fixed.. and they wont be considering compensation... and that redirecting to another number will take 24hrs...

Yes I spoke to a few different reps this morning...

Data seems OK tho...

Thats in North London btw...

Data isnt an area in North London btw...

I'm in North London and Data seems to be working...

Sleep Sheep Sleep

Good luck trying to find that Sleep button on there when you are half awake and want another 10 minutes under the duvet in the morning...

I guess by the time you have located it you will be wide awake anyway, so maybe it was an intentional ploy to get you to wake up and not be lazy......

The Avanti Flow has a fairly big curved Sleep button on top, and a weeny little one on the front, but the top one is a bit recessed so even that is a pain to find when you are not quite with it...

Gimme a big Sleep button that lights up when the alarm is going off...

Halfords.com crashes off the internet

F'tangF'tang

Halfrauds

With a trade card most stuff in Halfords is 50%-60% off the shelfprice... Still, EuroCarParts is a better place to get your car spares...

Yes the staff are all teenagers who usually dont know an alternator from a starter motor...

But, their Halfords Advanced workshop tools are really good... Independently tested their torque wrenches (made by Norbar) came out tops for accuracy, beating the top name brands by a wide margin...And the 150 piece socket set is lifetime guaranteed and unbelievably good quality (frequently on offer for 50% off... or permenantly 50% off with a trade card) for about 90 squids...

Staff: what car have you got?

Me: Aston Martin DB6

Staff: Are you nuts... you have an Aston Martin DB6 and you are buying parts for it in here...

Staff and all customers within earshot: AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

iPhone customers lay into Apple after iOS 4.0.1 update fails to install

F'tangF'tang

2 USB or not 2 USB, That is the Question...

Update worked OK for me, 20 mins start to finish... but bowing to peer pressure I will say it bricked my phone... Can I be in your gang now...

You cant expect a normal USB cable to work... This place has them on special... And you must be to buy one...

Diary of a somebody - life in iPhone 4 land

F'tangF'tang

Is Required

Just like the girl who accidentally flashes her boobs at you when she bends down...

Its not an accident, she knows what she is doing...but everyones happy, so who cares...

Of course Apple create the hype... Apple just give you a flash of its "stolen from a bar" new product, and the "hype" begins (aka advertising) ...... It wouldn't work if it wasnt so subliminal. Its all a pre written storyline.

Thats why you never saw the whole car in the Jaguar XK commercials... You cant crave something unless you have at least a rough idea on how it looks...

Its called clever marketing ...

iPhone 4 Day: pre-orders and pregnancy cut no ice with 02

F'tangF'tang

Is Required

Why don't the people queuing outside Mme Taussauds, or Hammersmith Odeon, or even Ikea on sofa sale day, get slated as much as those that choose to make an event out of the non event which in this case is buying a phone.

Its called antici...pation. Quite a nice feeling really. And no need to take a pill, or drink or smoke anything.

Even with the sun out it seems theres always a crowd ready to rain on someone elses parade.

Sky punts 'truly unlimited' 20Mb/s broadband

F'tangF'tang
FAIL

Not 2 Unlimited

Although Sky broadband is still relatively cheap, it peeesed me off when they changed the monthly download limit from 40GB to 10GB.

The official explanation of: "To bring the usage allowance on our Sky Broadband Everyday service in line with what the majority of our customers actually use, we’re reducing the monthly Usage Cap from 40GB to 10GB." is such a load of poo.

Only a matter of time before they change the T's and C's on these new packages once you've been with them long enough.
