I guess I never made that connection. I've called people a gimp, don't get me wrong, but I've never linked Gimp and gimp. Weird how that works.
And I'm not saying that in a sarky way. I'm actually OK with all of this. Like we stopped using spacker, and other insults to people's physical well being. If all I have to do to stop a person feeling insulted, is change 1 word, it feels like literally the least effort I could make.

The way I heard it said by someone smarter than me is that it's a stealth tax. Trump talks big about punishing China, but the tariffs aren't paid by China they're paid by US consumers, and it basically becomes a tax that disproportionately affects the working class - 25% tax on the essentials, and run of the mill appliances and items will never be felt by anyone who earns a good wage. But working class folks have a real risk of bleeding over it.

Why does it suggest that ? People respond differently to different things. Some people get arsey or angry when they're falsely accused, some people do it when they're accurately accused. Their prickly response, imo, shows a human being angry because of quite damaging accusations against the business they love working for. But that's just me
I'm really broke atm, things are going terribly. But just before this started I was lucky enough to get myself a 1080Ti (got it on release date, buggers even tacked on an extra 20 quid because "we've had to let a lot of people down holding this for you"), and I tell ya, it's getting more and more tempting to flog it. 4K gaming is beautiful, and my health is the cause of my woes, which means I have just..all the free time. Which I play games with. If I sell this a GTX670 would be my replacement. Nevermind low settings, most games won't even bloody run.
I've had more than a few msgs on Reddit from people offering me £800, £900 cash in hand for it. It's an absolute bloody nightmare. I might be the only person ever to be gutted that his graphics card is still the best out there.
The reason you got PCIe is because SATA isn't cutting it, or you just wanna show off. You pay the premium for the extra speed it offers, for your games or software.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay a premium for such a tiny SSD. Well, unless Apple decide to brand them and make them essential for the mac experience..

Doesn't work. It's more like if a US bank had overseas branches. The US courts should still be allowed to compel the company to reveal account info. They're not physically asking for the money to be moved, they're asking to see the balance.
I could understand if the crim used a different provider, one that wasn't a US-based company. But it's generally understood that even though you're using a worldwide accessible service, you're accessing the "local" version.

Honestly, I'd rather give up CPU cycles than see intrusive (or any, really) ads. I'm fortunate enough, probably like most people here, to have a powerful CPU, so the cycles are spare anyway. I could see how for a lot of users it'd be more of a problem.
It'd be nice to see it evolve into a way for it to be managed, via some sort of side action of seeing how well the page is loading, to determine how much strain the mining is having on the user.
But when I'm browsing the web, it tends to be all I'm doing (bar a tv show or movie playing in the corner) so I think it's a great way to help pay for sites.
The problem is the internet has always been "free", and that mentality is never really going to go away. Far too many people see ads as some sort of insult almost, even if they're not intrusive; just them existing is a problem. But content creators need to get paid!

This has been coming for a while. A fortnight ago China banned ICOs (El Reg covered it here https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/09/05/china_bans_cryptocurrency_ico_raisings/ ). China was always going to move towards this.
Moving currency out of the middle kingdom is a challenge (it might be illegal ? Don't quote me on that). So bitcoin was seen as a great way to cover cash in a society with very prying eyes. So of course they were going to crack down on it. China would never allow something like bitcoin to become pervasive, as they can't control it. And China isn't one to let that slide.
The thing with the Norks is that even if they did buy bitcoin, how are they going to monetise it in a big enough way to make it worthwhile. They need to move tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars a WEEK. No exchange could facilitate that and it not be noticed. Sure they could pay one off..but in today's age, with so many electronic eyes, it'd last about as long as a gnat orgasm

Virus scanners can only catch known threats or their derivatives (is that the right word ?), so if an enterprising hacker creates something knew, the scanners won't catch it.
BTW if I'm wrong on this I'd love some education. I assume this is how it works; scanners only know what to look for because of a database and the way they act. If there's more to it than that, I'd love to learn
Video conferencing for the day to day, to replace impersonal phone calls. And it's not just the the inmates who would benefit from this, can you imagine the joy it'd bring kids, especially younger ones, who would get to see Dad ?
This is has a whole other awesome side to it; a lot of parents won't bring kids to prisons/jails, it's just not suitable. A lot of the incarcerated never even get to see their kids grow up. Now they can watch birthdays, speak regularly, show them the macaroni art. Damnit I'm tearing up here.
Can you imagine as well the power taking that away would have to encourage behaviour ? More than a lot of cons hold onto the idea of seeing their loved ones again. A constant reminder of what they look and sound like would be god damn glorious.
And of course, keep the face to face visits, because cutting off human contact that doesn't involve a shiv is downright barbaric.

I do feel like as it's a minor, there should be some leeway, but overall, I think they're doing the right thing. People expect their profiles to be private, that should extend to after death (and before you open your mouth, my missus died in 2013 and I couldn't access her profile to get pics that were set private, so yes I have experience with this)
