Meh

All this....

....for a another pile of shit movie from Hollywood. We should have this kind of power for more interesting stuff like a James Burke Connections series. All in 3D of course.

Fuck EA

I have been boycotting them for years. I am so happy to see those money grabbing BASTARDS getting screwed. Now if only we could have similar news about Activision-Blizzard....I would fucking love it.

Still not good enough

When they come up with Mint for Phones, than it will be news. Go Mint!

What? Am I dreaming?

Is this true? How? Where? When? Quid?

Wow....I am so happy because of this. I mean, I hate Stephen Harper and the conservative lunatics running the country but I never thought it would be possible for them to revert back to a Parliament decision because of public outcry. Is this a dream? Is there any hope?

Amazing. El Reg making my day!

Good job

All the offices I manage run Dell machines and they've been very reliable. I am quite happy with their Pro Support for Business as well. Very good on Dell and very good for the folks that had to do the work on site. But I have to say, without offsite backup, you are risking too much.

I love explorations of all sorts....

I can do that too!

"Unfortunately the object was a static 1cm tall cylinder, it was only invisible to microwaves (not visible light) and the invisibility effect only worked from one angle."

Well, when my wife if complaining too much, I am too tired and the pub is open I get invisible too. For hours!

I am not surprised by the review

After all, MS gave us a glimpse of what happens when you use a phone OS for the desktop (what a fail). But on a phone Windows 8 should be good. I am happy we have more competition now. It is good for us when more contenders fight for a bigger market share.

3 Lessons

1 - Technological tools are wonderful and can be used for noble purposes, like education.

2 - Some kids are still kids (not miniature of adults), even though their tools are different nowadays.

3 - We can improve the lives of everyone in this planet with some good will, technology and guidance.

Of course politicians are not interested in any of this. Anywhere.

WTF?

20 Billion for this?

I can name at least 30 ways to improve this new UI for free. How the hell is someone spending 20 billion to get that crap?

Anyway I suggest WTFUI

A brilliant idea

Indeed very clever. But between paint balls and a gigantic nuclear warhead I prefer the latter. Right in the middle of the asteroid. Call me crazy, but I rather obliterate something then try to move it when it comes down to my ass being destroyed.

Another day another dollar

And another try by MS. Let's see what happens. We will have a pretty good idea how this OS will fare once people have been playing with it for a couple months. My expectations are....well......VERY low.

Well...

I understand the need for tape in specific situations. However, at this point in time it is stupid to have someone assuming redundant backups using tape is a good solution. Try restoring a network from one and you will see why. It is perfect for archiving purposes, especially for public traded companies, but honestly, it is as obsolete as most other magnetic media.

The cost benefit is not as good as it used to be, especially now that many large companies have offsite datacenters to transfer their data to.

Oh, and I HATE tapes. Beer time here. Got to go now.

Unhappy

It is sad...

....but it is how the market operates. I think the losses of many lives and the struggle to recover is already bad for the Japanese people but to see factories moving out and people losing their jobs as well is horrible. Unfortunately I cannot blame those companies for leaving. Japanese workers are very expensive. To have to shut down operations because of so many natural disasters plus the nuclear meltdown problems......I think is enough for anyone. It is a risk management issue and Japan did not survive to tell the tale.

I cannot believe I am going to say this....

But after testing both, the consumer preview and the developer preview of Windows 8 for a few weeks now, I think I miss any other version of Windows. Even Vista....

Win 8 is one of the major failures I've seen in design, functionality and accessibility. In any product, not only software.

Alien

Rowan Atkinson

He should be the one in the main role. As Black Adder. The gay beach volleyball scene of the first movie was enough. Let's get someone that fits the role properly.

Alien - because Tom will never fire at beings from outer space (Scientology forbids that on rule 22, I think).

Re: Two things.

I am not talking about BIOS encryption. I am talking about HD encryption that can be select in the BIOS.....COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THING. All my laptops have it. It doesn't matter how hard you try to break through this encryption, you simply can't. Even the FBI cannot currently break that encryption.

Re: Two things.

I have to disagree with you. DELL laptops have encryption available for HD, any size, for many years now. Free. It is on the BIOS settings and it is a very strong encryption. So your first two statements are incorrect. Second, your third statement is absurd. Any network policy, even the most relaxed one, can have the option of asking for HD encryption password after a few minutes idle. I am assuming that to steal the device HOT someone will take at least 3 minutes to grab it and get out of the building. Physical access is part of IT security policies too.

There is no excuse for this FAIL. Whoever is responsible for IT administration at NASA, is very bad in what he/she does. VERY BAD.

We should all strike

It is unbelievable how thankless is the IT profession nowadays. We ran all the shit they have. We can render useless every single company in this planet by simply not moving as fast as we usually do, and yet, many employers don't appreciate the hard work we put on their companies. Let's pull the plug, crush enemies and hear the lamentation of the women!

A huge strike all around the world. 24 hours without IT professionals in any areas, in any countries and the world will crumble like a castle of cards. We can ask for a 3000% raise next day and 6 months vacation and they will say: "Thank you for showing mercy IT DUDE!"

And someone please bring the Jack Daniels.

As long as it doesn't shrink my penis....

Rombizio
WTF?

And how does it come out?

Also, this device is too big to travel in many of our arteries and veins. I agree with some other fellows here: I would never let them put this inside me with this size. And I doubt this video properly illustrates how blood really flows inside your body. Looks like it is flying, not swimming against the current.

And don't get me started on the shape....

Rombizio

I don't like it....

I tested 7 different products in two and a half months and compared the prices of them all. In the end, I went for the slightly more expensive IBM Tivoli solution for one of my clients. Not only it is a better backup service and has better technical support, but it can backup Exchange 2010 faster, easier and with much more granularity. Have said that, for smaller businesses AppAssure might be a good solution.

But I think Dell will keep it universal and not only for Dell servers. Maybe now the product will be cheaper, possibly having a better cost-benefit in the end.

Mint and Mate

I am running Mint 12 with Mate. Feels better than Cinnamon and much better than Gnome. It is not perfect but it is the best option for now. Mint 11 was near perfect, I have no clue why they had to touch it.

And for now, Mint is the best desktop distro out there. By a long margin.

Ha!

When I mentioned that the drone was taken down roughly but under control by the Iranians and that the US Department of Defense had announced that the drone showed by the Iranian TV was real, I got some thumbs down.

Who is laughing now....How can people be so stupid to believe that the US security measures are flawless? Probably the same stupid person that believed that a drone flying extremely high in the sky would be shot, crash and remain intact like that.

Unencrypted communication fail.

Rombizio
Mushroom

For the people that think it is fake...

The US Department of Defense just confirmed it is the real deal. And more...they admitted lying when they said it "crashed" on the Iranian side. The drone is pretty much intact and there is a strong chance it was guided to a rough landing by the Iranian hackers.

Oh well.....Americans: lying to everybody and bullying others since 1776.

Law suit sequence

So the aircraft instruments fail (Airbus' fault) and then a couple of assholes that didn't know what do to kill the crew and passengers because they did not know how to fly straight. And the captain was somewhere else at the time (Air France's fault x2).

In US that would be a multi-billion dollar law suit that at least would partially comfort the victims families with a few million dollars each.

If I was the French president I would ask all planes from the company to be grounded until every single pilot and co-pilot could prove they can at least recover a commercial plane from a stall (Aviation 101 - Class 1 - Introduction).

I, too, blame the french.
