Facebook names former Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg head of global affairs

Re: I'm not missing the opportunity to flip this...

I seem to remember the LibDems stopped the brexit referendum being called when they were in coaltion. It was called when they were no longer in power. Seems like there was a difference after all...

Let me get this straight, you are saying that you stopped voting anti-Tory in your constituency and are angry that the Tory then got in? Sounds like it's your fault!

What do voters want? An IRL Maybot? Sure, give that a whirl

Childcare is a pain in the bum and so is HMRC's buggy subsidies site

fangster

Once you have gone through the pain of registering for 30 hours free childcare in the first place (need NI of both parents + current and previous work details and addresses), you then have to reconfirm it every 3 months/term. You get an email saying to log in and reconfirm. You click on the link. The page has many options none of which are log in or reconfirm. You guess. You are asked the DOB of youngest child. You are told that you will need NI details etc. You click next. There is an option to log in after which you can reconfirm without need any extra info! Fuckwits!

Re: More than a security problem

BT uesd to do this (maybe they still do?) everytime a new version of their (never used) BT Broadband helper tool was available. It knackered all the automated ticketing systems etc. in my business (rack in my basement at the time!). I couldn't figure out what was wrong until I tried to use a web browser and it came up with the nagging page.

Three non-obvious reasons to Vote Leave on the 23rd

Shocked, shcoked I tell you

AO is coming out for Leave? I'm shocked I tell you. Next you'll be telling me The Sun has also abandoned it's long-held ambivalence...

Plusnet ignores GCHQ, spits out plaintext passwords to customers

BT business broadband would always email me my password (unrequested) in plaintext (including to other admins on the account) whenever I made a change!

Virgin Media's SPAM-AGEDDON 'fix' silences mailboxes

Yes, all the same problems are still here, SPAM worse again. Can El Reg try and get an updated statement from VM?

Loose the big pictures!

The first thing I have to do on every article is scroll down a full page to get past the non-value-adding picture to the text. This is getting very boring now and I'm going to sop reading for the day and get back to work...

Also I can't pretend that I may be reading something work-releated and technical if those big pictures flash up everytime!

NOT APPY: Black cab drivers enraged by Hailo as taxi tech wars rage on

fangster

Several years ago, in my previous neck of the woods, the local paper had short bios of local council candidates. The 3 BNP candidates (I guess they would be UKIP now) were all described as "black cab drivers". They wrote into the paper next week to make it clear that they drove "black cabs" not that they were cab drivers who were black!

Should my aunt continue to use XP past April?

Should my aunt continue to use XP past April?

Not really work as such so apologies but I recently got this email from my 70+ year-old aunt (whose computer I originally setup):

"I have heard that Microsoft will no longer be doing updates on their XP model after April. Does this mean that it will not be safe for me to continue to use mine and that I should get a new model? "

I replied that as long as she keeps her AV up-to-date and firewall on and doesn't click on anything dodgy she'll be fine.

Was this the right answer?

BT are the same

Everytime I change something to do with my BT business broadband they email me (and anyone else connected to the account) my password in cleartext! They are still doing it. I've given up expecting anything more from BT...

Virgin Media to push out nimble new broadband speeds

fangster
WTF?

Plenty of space!?!?

"Virgin still has plenty of space on its network"

Really? Just have a look at their support forums to see the number of people complaining and being told there are problems with "over utilisation"!

Portsmouth redefines the Olympic-sized swimming pool

WTF?

It is Olympic size!!

"We expect an International Olympic Committee ruling on the matter in due course."

Will the statement on the council's website suffice?

Will someone at Vulture Central now get round to updating/correcting the article?

Although admittedly, it not being true does take aware from the article somewhat. Maybe a follow-up on the gullible media?

McAfee false positive bricks enterprise PCs worldwide

fangster
FAIL

"Moderate performance issues"

Er, it removes svchost.exe! That's a lot of vital windows services that stop working (and reboot your machine in some cases, i.e. RPC). My internet stopped working after the forced reboot so I was lucky I had a second PC to try and work out what was going on. I applied the mcafee hotfix suggested which worked for a while but then it quarantined svchost again! I tried to apply the new definition file in safe mode as suggested and it said "Error: No qualifying McAfee products found"! I now use AVG...

Lib Dems demand niceness, ignore technology

fangster
FAIL

Amazing bias of the author

"lacking a unifying theme"

"The Lib Dem desire to make the world a fairer place is encapsulated in its four key points: fair taxes, fair future, fair deal and fair chance (for children)."

Er...might the theme be fairness?

Compare this to the her bottom-licking piece on the conservative manifesto yesterday!

Similar detailed policy on the "small stuff" in both Conservative manifestos (i.e. greater protection from abuse for NHS workers), in the LibDem one is magically "tinkering at a level way beyond what one would expect of a party seriously preparing for government".

The scrapping of ID cards is important enough to be headline news in the Conservative manifesto piece and evidence of how amazingly different they are but in the LibDem piece is just part of list that proves they are going some way but "still don't get it".

Come on, I expect better from El Reg!
