great idea, one small problem. how is a flat fee of £300 going to pay for the costs to BMW? The roaming charges alone for a days use would be more than that. They must have done the math, but unlimited 3g roaming streaming sounds mighty expensive

if you dont want to root, and

want a stock jelly bean experiance, nova launcher is the way to go. it drops sense, and just gives you a very close appramation to the stock launcher. lovely stuff.

Lots of people have always asked why BBM wasnt cross platform, and now it will be. I also belive that opening it up will kill blackberry. Lots of people are relient on BBM, but now they wont be tied to blackberries, which lets be honest, arnnt nearly as good as android or apple. When you can get BBM on an S4, why would anyone buy a Z10?

Re: WOW, 900million.

one billion used to be a million million. but some point in the recent past it changed to be a thousand million. no idea why.

synergy

All the Sony hardware needs to work together. Why can't I remotely connect to my ps3 from my Sony phone? Why can't I video chat with my PS eye equipped ps3 to my psvita or my Sony phone? Its getting better but Sonys various divisions have always been to distanced from each other. They need to forget DRm and artificial lock ins, and allow people to use the full potential of all the various net connected Sony devices. Microsoft or apple would kill to have the potential that Sony currently have.

by the end of the year?

why on earth is it taking so long to add the start menu back in? Hacks have been out since before windows 8 launched.

Re: Bloody hell..

Too many of the, now failing, manufacurers released under specced and cheap phones to try and jump on the android gravy train. Early sonys are crap, almsot everything after the htc desire HD is garbage. The other manufacturers tried to grab cash at the cost of the customer, and now its coming back to bite them.

Mike Brown
Bronze badge

Argruably the desire was the 1st mainstream android...

Which makes it a shame HTC are where they are now. Its completly their own fault however. The released too many phones, in too short a space of time. Each was virtually the same as each other, and for a while they released some really under specced ones.

from the sounds of it

they are skint*, and are needing to get real money out of the banks and into the company proper. Which is odd.

*i dont mean "fags or food" skint btw, not normal people skint.

Mike Brown

i will fix this

step 1: Get rid of corp tax and simplify personal tax e.g. one income tax to rule them all

step b: Increase the min wage massively

step the third: Increase income tax massively

Bosh! Problem fixed

Re: What sort of cretin buys a Amazon Swindle anyway?

id forgotten about the 3g!! This makes his rash kobo purchase even more annoying.

Re: What sort of cretin buys a Amazon Swindle anyway?

non techies. i actually recomended a kindle to my wifes great uncle. But then he went and got a 2nd hand kobo, as it was cheaper. Ive had nothing but problems since then. It dosent help he dosent actually have any net connection at home, or a computer for that matter, but the plan was to use the libruarys wifi, and buy all books from amazon thro the device. Nice and easy. Now i have the hassle of trying get books on this device that ideally needs a computer and a net connection, when he has none. He actually enquired about getting newspapers on it!! What would be the point? He only goes to the libruary once a week, and because he is the wifes family i cant tell him to stop being a moron. Now if it was my dad.....

Re: “Every device now is 'always on'. That’s the world we live in.”

no he dosent. my phone is "always on", but if i turn off the data i can still make calls or play games, or take photos. By linking his tweets (twats?) to electricity he basically said if the xbox isnt "always on" it wont work at all. Thats a huge shift.

telcos dont really need to worry

as customers still need a mobile device to use voip. the vast majority cant afford to buy a handset out right, so will still need to turn to the telcos to get subsidised handsets.

Re: Apparently, we are special

People seem to think that IT isnt a real job. And tinkering with computers is easy (well it is....but). I think its to do with how usefull but ultimitly pointless a home computer for the vast majortity actually is. Yes its nice to email your gran, or play bejewed, or look at cute kwittens, but its not quite as vital as a washing machine, hot water, or a fridge. So plumbers get paid, we get stupid questions. Personal fav was being asked why a consumer grade printer couldnt print in white, and the person not understanding the many scientific, and not so scientific answers i had to give.

poor people

Are phablets not for poor people who cant afford to buy a real tablet, and a phone. The real benefit of these things is the contract method of buying it. No money down, and you can walk away with the kit.

3g is good enough

As above. Im more than happy to wait the extra 2 seconds for a webpage to arrive. and so is the great majortiy of the population. This isnt like the massive difference between 2g and 3g, so untill its cheaper i dont think many will upgrade.

Mike Brown

But still they come

old news

we discussed this months ago on warseer.

Whats more ridiculous is that most of the background from their games is ripped (homage'd?) from lots of sources. Im in the middle of reading a mote in gods eye ( or what ever its called) and was stunned to see references to Tanith and Istavan, the whole imperial set up is similar too. There is also loads of Dune, smatterings of Heinlen, some Lovecraft and buckets of Tolkein.

Whilst GW are money grabbing ass hats these days, the fluff is great, and the models are so pwetty. i can let them off.

Anyhoo, blood to the blood god, waaaagh, and other such things. Im away to paint my Dark Angels.......

Mike Brown
Bronze badge

this will never work

as the article mentions: most people dont upgrade. How are MS going to stop people using office 2007 and start using this? The only thing i can think of is to spike 2007 with a dodgy upgrade, and if that got discovered MS would be in a world of pain.

MS are too late to the party....again

Re: draft

agreed. as long as it will hit within a 1000 mile radius, the USA have a problem. All Iran needs to do is aim for the centre, they might only hit field, but as you say they might not. And the US cant take that rather big chance

Re: Wall street is crazy

I can see your point but has it has to do wth the way apple does business and what products they produce. Arguably they only sell 3 (maybe 4) products. And arguably there success is a fashion bubble waiting to explode. It wouldnt take much for apples main revenue streams to dry up. I realise they have gazzilions in the bank, but a couple of poor choices, a failed release, god forbid; a recall. and all that cash is used up.

Mike Brown
Bronze badge

does that mean

I can put google and facebook on my CV as employers?

this seems a rather silly way to grab some cash

Mike Brown

more proof

that MS know they are in trouble, but dont have any real way to fix it

Mike Brown

Re: Its the per item profit, stupid!

Spot on. Shares dont just reflect todays value, but future value too. And as you say Apple are making less profit on more products, this isnt a good thing for them.

Mike Brown

free wifi? so i can browse and then buy online? how decent of you.

morons.

as has been said. cheaper prices or failing that better service. free parking wouldnt go amiss as well.

Nah, I prefer the current solution. Ignore the main issue, blame the poor and the disabled, and try to save billions by cutting after school clubs.

Mike Brown

the tin foil hat wearer in me is deeply troubled

Is this an attempt to gag people on the net ,who can converse with a much larger and broader number of people, about a vast array of subjects. Its much harder to organise a revelotion when forced to use word of mouth. Hmmmm

As we all knew, windows 8 is suffarable when used with a touch screen. The bigger issue for MS is what happens when there is no touchscreen.

Re: "Hell Fire Belief"

going the religious route actually destroyed any chance they had to fight the rfid tag. If they hadnt called it thr "mark of the beast", which is ludicrous, and just went for the privacy and freedom route they may have something.

Re: WTF?

why would the whole call have to be silent? its perfectly feasible to have a surprising amount of silence during a skype call. So you could have a normal conversation about the weather or football, or your cat, but during every pause a super secret message is being sent. It would be trivial to work out how much time would be needed to have the correct amount of pauses, to send a certain message length.

Mike Brown
Bronze badge

Re: WTF?

Becuase the data sent still looks like skype. Which makes it look perfectly innocent.

Plus if the decode app is small enough, it can be hidden within skype itself. And since veryone has skyupe already, noone is going to take any notice of the skype icon on the computer.

Re: Remember Instagram

Agree totally. The only reason the iphone sells so well is the cache that the buyer belives they are buying into. By releasing a cheaper version they destroy the illusion of luxery. And in turn there whole marketing angle. I cant se them doing this, but if they do its more proof that we have past "peak apple".

Mike Brown
Bronze badge

wait wait. £60k profits from £100m sales. When there overheads and costs muct have been miniscule (as they wernt paying for the products) there is somthing wrong here.
