LibCons bin £2bn of late Labour projects

BAE

cancel all BAE and other defence purchases or defence R&D funds. We'll be out of debt quicker than we know it. Besides it's cheaper and better to buy US.

Once money is available put it into universities and SMEs, not BAE, for new defence research.

What a complete waste of a jail cell, but then it's probably doing him a favour... low sec prisons are rather comfy these days and he'll get looked after and free entertainment.

Google open video codec may face patent clash

Squirrel

monopoly

What Google is doing is forcing MPEG-LA's hand to expose its monopoly of patents, whereby all codec use technology they patented (whether its true or not because of the generalisation and limited approaches to video encoding).

Whether software should be patentable is another matter entirely. But by having them expose their monopoly, then anti-trust measures can be taken.

MPEG-LA think they own everything related to video encoding because of their patents. It's about time they were stripped of all their trivial patents and generalisations as it's now limiting so many different industries and all innovation in the area.

kill it with fire and let a small group of real IT architects have a go

These big firms full of inexperienced monkeys seem to fluff all the IT gov projects and give IT a bad name.

If they're going to go ahead with more SME IT firms doing gov contracts, then at least they'll have a chance of getting some quality instead of being milked for every penny.

Also gov contracts should be fixed fee with deadlines and penalties... none of this bottomless cash pot that they get away with now.

The wonders of VPNs

They're never actually hosted where the DNS resolved to. It's just a VPN end point, which is why they can move so quickly, all they do is change the DNS A records and point it at a new VPN end point.

Obviously the lawyers don't understand this at all and will keep futilely attempting to take the head of the Hydra, missing the other heads and not realising that they almost instantly regrow.

A slap on the wrist and a £200 fine is the way to go MAX. Really it shouldn't have got this far, a caution or strong talking too was more than enough but I guess it's way past that.

Pirate Party UK sinks on maiden voyage

Squirrel
FAIL

not at all

The local pirate got a ton of press in the local paper and on facebook. I think that counts as a win for them.

If it was just another pressure group like ORG, it would have just been ignored.

Your narrow mind and limited exposure to the wider reality is limiting your potential. You may not agree with them but their approach exposed a lot of people to their cause and highlighted issues like DE act that otherwise was mostly unnoticed outside of the IT industry.

The name sucks and they could never win, but that's not the point! It's about being informed.

Squirrel

Vote Lib Dem, doom humanity to extinction

Squirrel
Alert

Or vote laborious or convicts

The two 'main' parties are so close on the political compass they might as well be the same party. Alternating between them ad infinitum is madness. Only mad people repeat the same mistake over and over and expect the result to change.

Conservatives want "change"? wait what was your party name again? no kidding.

ICBM is not a valid threat to this country and hasn't been for many many years. The UK is a toothless lumbering wreck on the international stage. We need to call everyone back and completely reevaluate what we do. We're just a tiny island not the USA and even contributing 1/6 of what the US do is far more than our fair share. We spend far too much on 'defence' for all the wrong reasons.

Asteroids, if we see them coming I'm quite sure our current tridents have zero chance of hitting them because they don't have enough fuel to break orbit and reach a roid before it's too close to make a difference (it'll break up and scattershot the planet), leave that to the yanks or russians.

Power is a different issue and I agree that for the foreseeable future nuclear is important until solar & wind power catches up, and then we'll still need nuclear as backup for windless cloudy days. And do as some remote US towns do and use massive batteries to assist power peak usage and other deficits.

Luckily air con is a US fad for residential or we'd be properly screwed.

We can do it on wave/wind/solar but we're not quite there yet, maybe in 10-20 years with higher efficiency tech. OFC population caps/limits need to be seriously looked at like in China and Japan or power requirements and imports of all kinds will just continue climbing.

wikip is not wikim

Just thought I'd straighten that out for you. I even checked the bondage page on wikip for you. Yep your kids are safe!! (unless you count oil paintings (ca. 1630-1890) as subversive) - even though I'm quite sure searching for 'bondage' or having that in an URL wouldn't get through any school or parental firewall.

Also there's nothing illegal about the image you linked (even in the UK).

How much drilling did that take you to find?

If you go looking for porn on the internet, you will find it. Is that a surprise?

**** OMG think of the children **** I love that line (not literally). It's a wonderful escape all for people that can't look after their own and see demons in shadows. If your kids aren't educated enough to not go looking for this stuff then maybe you should monitor their internet use, or wait... teach them about sex so they're not curious about unknowns!

WTF?

not really

"makes me puke a little in my mouth." - I've never had that unless I'm ill. Maybe you should see a doctor.

Listing qty of pics in a category isn't really much evidence is it? I had a quick look at the penis category and it's mostly medical or information orientated. I'm sure there's quite a few porn like images in there somewhere put it's a tiny percentage of the whole, and as a public image bin I'm not surprised. They do monitor posts but only for illegal images - sometimes some illegal images slip thru' and have to be reported by a third party. No one is perfect.

The attack is probably done by randomly returning the wrong DNS queries or HTTP location headers.

Either way a VPN which includes DNS would bypass anything BT could do to a connection. Or use any old VPN and openDNS.

OFCOM Please do something about it. It's called false advertising, plain and simple.

Line speeds I can understand are tricky to predict from one house to the next as the quality of the 10+ year old copper lines can vary massively. And the wording 'up to' is usually prominent enough for any one. However, out and out lying about 'unlimited' is morally and legally wrong.

<3 xen

The 2 (xen vs kvm) are totally different approaches. I'd like to see those in charge of xen in Cambridge really start pushing it again as it's lost a lot of momentum.

Maybe dynamic provisioning is the way forward as a marketing point.

If I had cash to spend and needed proper non-static virtualisation then vmware would be my choice. Static, I'd probably stick with xen on centos for now, no need to fix what isn't broken.

suspend them all

Have ICANN/Nominet randomly check 100 domain names per week with a recorded delivery notification, if no reply within 28 days or the post bounces then suspend the domain name for another 90 days and then put it back on the market! If they contact after the 28 days because they're wondering why their domain isn't working, then fine them costs+£10 for not having the correct details registered.

One of the great annoying thing about the internet is; if you register a .co.uk, then some random will watch co.uk will then buy the .com equiv especially if it looks like a business bought it. I've seen this a few times. It's like the stock market, with automated systems getting in instant orders. You only fallback is to research the domain names with a trusted provider and then buy the lot.

Domain names are running out and most are just domain squatters. The great thing with .co.uk is that nominet will just kick them off and give it to you, however, it takes a little while.

PHPers prefer Windows desktop to Linux

Squirrel

nuts

There are 'issues' with developing on win and then running on linux. Just to name a few... missing functions in win, filesystem rights, UTF-8 vs windows codepage conversion, by extension of that; localeconv() and also include paths.

You can code around all of it but if your devs aren't aware then everything will pass unit tests until it gets into it's production(-like) environment.

The best compromise I have found for php devs that are allergic to linux; use virtualisation like virtualbox to run LAMP and work from host-only shared folders.

You can even debug like this and it's linux so no licences to buy, you can just copy the virtualisation config and HD file to new systems.
