Chinese tech players take aim at Apple's talking tech

Confuciousmobil

Chinese market

The Chinese market is the largest in the world but as they

A) don't want to pay for anything and have no enforceable copyright laws, and

B) murder westerners who get. Involved with their political elite

I'm not sure it's a market I would like to get involved with. Apple are trying but I'm not sure it's worth it.

4 million?

Is 4million for both versions or just the RT? And at what price? Or is that 4 million regardless of price?

And people who want a full blown desktop OS on a tablet fail, as MS have done, to realise that tablets are not replacements for laptops. I believe that there will be a lot of very disappointed people.

Just tried outlook.com on my iPad and it just redirects to live.com and I get my normal hotmail.

Is this a limited trial or do I need to log in on a PC first? Or do MS just not want me to try it?

Surface: Because Microsoft does so well making hardware?

Confuciousmobil
Meh

Landscape?

How many people use their iPad in landscape mode most of the time?

A tablet is usually used in portrait mode which, being widescreen, the Surface will not be good at (all the pictures are landscape - that is for a good reason) . For that reason, I do not believe the Surface is going to be used the same way as the iPad.

Which means it's a laptop/ultrabook replacement and I'm just not sure how big that market is. I might be wrong and there could be massive pent up demand for a device like this (I was wrong about the iPad when it first came out, couldn't see the point, but am on my second one now and love it). It just seems to be attacking a small, niche market.

It's a long road from announcement to success and to release in the USA only at launch seems to show a distinct lack of faith by MS - I wonder if it will ever make it to these shores...

I hope I am wrong as I would like to see it succeed. We'll see when it's released.

Re: Tethered Jailbreak Remains

RedSn0w has not been updated. As with lots of minor upgrades it does not need to be but you must point it at the 5.1 Ipsw and is exactly the same tethered JB as 5.1

With JailBroken devices, incremental updates do not work (thank you Apple) so you will have to download the full Ipsw ( the size varies by device but the actual size and SHAs can be found on the Wiki).

Really not a lot in this update to get exited about.

Moody's downgrades Nokia to near-junk status

Confuciousmobil
Unhappy

For Windows Phone to break into the market it needs a market leading phone - if they don't get one soon they will always be known as a third rate OS.

I hoped Nokia could deliver, but unless they do soon they are likely to pul out of the phone market and where will that leave Windows Phone?

MS need this to succeed as much as Nokia do - they have both invested a lot and Windows Phone could be good, but it needs market leading hardware to show it off first - with it they could both succeed, without, I'm not sure.

I would like to see a third player in the mobile OS arena but unless they do something soon it will remain a two horse race.

Win 3.0

Win 3.0 was the game changer. That was what allowed me to access more memory so I could create larger spreadsheets in Lotus 123 V3

Luckily it took a couple of months after the release of Win 3.0 for the Lotus User Group to issue their newsletter saying it was impossible to get 123 running under Windows due to incomparable memory management.

Two days later they released an update telling people how to do it.

It had taken me most of the day to install the eagerly awaited Win3.0 and figure out how to get 123 working on it, but it was worth the wait.

Upgrades to Windows since 3.0 have all just been minor, it was 3.0 that broke us free from 640k

Re: Hmm..

What has JailBreaking got to do with the number of Apps you download from the App store? All it does is give you access to additional Apps that allow you to do more with your device. If anything, I download more from the App store as JailBreaking makes my iDevices more useable so I use it far more than I would otherwise and hence download more Apps than people who only use their devices occasionally.
