Please stop publishing this Frankfurt School Political Correctness nonsense already

Not enough quality women like tech jobs, so it doesn't matter how some clueless socialist feminist or excuse for a male wants to change the male/female ratio, and racial diversity without merit is a complete load of cow dung too.

Seriously, this Marxist rubbish is getting so very old, boring and tragic! Marx was mostly wrong, because Socialism always fails eventually, and fails faster in more extreme cases like the USSR and Maoist China. It's a great pity that the USA has got a nasty case of metastasizing Socialism cancer now.

The facts are White Men and Asians are generally more interested in tech and/or smarter than the alternatives, and these businesses select for the best staff! Also a smarter women would have children when she is younger rather than the absurd super career women nonsense, because it gets harder to get pregnant, to have healthy babies and to have the energy to take care of the children when she is much older!

The only things I ever remember Stephen Fry being amusing in was Black Adder and V for Vendetta; other than that he seems a bit of a Muppet.

I think the icon is appropriate given well they apparently catered to despicable characters like this when I still watched TV.

Re: Time for some truly revolutionary GUIs?

Open plan offices are the work of the devilishly stupid extroverts who confuse collective rabbiting with results because they need excessive stimulus to feel alive, it's also (bean counter) cheaper, but this is hell for Introverts, and costs a lot more in lost productivity. Luckily I recently got a better arrangement for thinking work, so no longer have to put up with that destructive chaos.

Anyhow, I'll stick with Windows 7 until enough of my favourite software providers see or can be persuaded that Windows is a lost cause, and to migrate to Linux; my Netbook already migrated from XP to Mint.

What a stupid design

1. Mobiles are already far too big now, a /lot/ wider than even the widest old land line phone, so ridiculously bulky and unergonomic!

2. The width of the passport would be unusable for pockets, possibly even suit/coat pockets, so require a bag or case to carry it in.

3. I bet that keyboard is a pig to use.

4. I you want a mobile that wide, you may as well use a 7" tablet as a phone, and get even more screen space.

5. Sharp square corners like that are a liability, seriously WTF was the designer thinking!

An Airzound Bicycle Air Horn is much louder than any buzzer; it can be as loud as 120dB at full volume, so I have the pressure regulator reduced to car horn volume. Re: Missed a few bits!

Hmm...

No, disc brakes have a separate aerated metal disc attached to one side of disc compatible hubs of a disc brake specific wheel, and needs special frame/fork fittings near the axle mount with a stiffer frame/fork to stop the frame/fork bending from the high braking torque.

Rim brakes are the older kind of brake and press in a flat surface either side of a rim brake compatible wheel rim. I have some of the V-brake kind on an MTB bike, but mine are the expensive Shimano XTR parallel push ones, and used on decent Mavic wheels which don't bend.

Disc brakes tend to be better in dirty or wet conditions, or when you need to really slow down fast, but tend to be a lot more expensive to buy and maintain than any V-brake, and can disable the bike if you bend a disc somehow e.g. too much wear or a crash.

Anyhow, this article is obviously biased to "Summer Cyclists" on big 700c wheel road bikes, which are often stupid expensive for something usable, even without rip-off bicycle electrics/electronics, and often have worse brakes, worse comfort, less stability/agility and less versatile tires than MTBs; just try riding a road bike in heavy rain, mud or sheet ice in winter, not good, but easy on an MTB with the right tires, which I have, including tool metal studded tires.

As for most Hybrids, putting MTB parts on a road bike like frame; just dumb, because 700c wheels are too fracking big!

Lastly if you buy a four figure bike the 10% you should spend on locks and an annual 10% on insurance soon make this look a costly hobby! Frankly I'd rather have savings, and spend more on computer gear and other useful/fun stuff.

Overclocking to 5GHz? We put Intel Devil’s Canyon CPU to the test

Why is anyone so stupid as to even think of using air coolers with top end CPUs.

Ready made Corsair water coolers blow away bloated air coolers for cooling, and are not that hard to fit, and can even be cheaper than top end air coolers; they even do them for GPU cards now! I've used an early ready made Corsair water cooler model for years now, with push-pull fans on the radiator.

I'll have to see a lot faster or have my i7 920 24GB machine die before I even consider a new i7, especially at the stupid money for a new Intel CPU, a new mobo, and over 16GB of RAM. AMD are much cheaper, as I know from building beefy FreeNAS boxes.

Good god, where will the new storage experts come from?

Infernoz Bronze badge
Holmes

Seriously, this is all due to the financial system being based on fraud.

There are lots of books on this, especially at Mises.org; basically the following is the case:

* we have a debt based currency, the government and economy are in a debt spiral, until loads of people go bankrupt or the currency dies, central bank 'printing' only delays this!

* we have have lenders fraudulently providing compounding interest loans, based on fraction reserve of debt(!) bonds and currency, and mostly nothing, so not an honest value for value exchange.

* all this fake money inflation pushes up the price of goods, so makes stuff less and less affordable for younger generations, because wages tend to lag these price increases, so more people have rent stuff.

* toxic waste like synthetic derivatives is just debt fraud on steroids to the n'th power!

People should also have a look at the book "Scarcity" by Sendhill Mullainathan & Eldar Sharif, to learn that people with scarcity can develop tunnel vision, so miss important stuff outside the tunnel and build an inflating debt spiral of currency, time, or other scare resources, and even come to a grinding halt e.g. bankruptcy or Divorce.

The worst absurdity is trying to run any closed system with no creative destruction as a market, it just doesn't work, and leads to colossal waste and disorganisation.

You have to make it peoples _business_ to get this stuff right and to suffer personal consequences when it fails, otherwise they get complacent, or worse become socialist do gooders (do bad)!

Microsoft still don't get it, the libraries and runtime matter loads, and Oracle need to stop being morons with Google about Java (sorry J2ME is obsolete!), just look at what that clever man Elon Musk has done with the Tesla patents; he gets it that monopoly leads to stagnation. Libraries matter and Java has loads more that .Net, and has Maven to make them really easy to use, so you don't need cruft like Assemblies, or have to use those haystacks the Windows folder and the registry to run code.

All Governments are dangerous and can easly end up as criminal gangs

The basic social contract for governments is the sparingly use of the power /borrowed/ from the people to provide more benefits to the majority of the civilisation than costs, and excessive law, regulation, welfare and spying are pretty damned high on the costs side, so most governments are no longer fit to govern and they know it!

Quite simply, career politics must be forbidden, whole governments rebuilt smaller, and taxes and spending drastically shrunk; and if they don't yield, then they must be forcibly removed.

The reason these criminal governments have lasted so long is because they are funded with fake money, known as fiat (debt) currency and have allowed banksters to set-up profitable /private/ central banks to cheat the tax payers, the bond buyers, and savers via profitable interest on state debt and fraudulent currency inflation, and on occasion excessive deflation to force sale of assets at excessively low prices.

It is no concidence that WW1, the Great Depression, and WW2 happened after the Federal Reserve conspiracy was devised and created; this criminal enterprise made them all possible!

That's retarded

If they haven't: forewarn customers that IP4 addresses will become scarce and priced much than IP6, started increasing IP4 prices, provided a countdown of addresses for each locale to forewarn people, or shouted where the migration resources are.

I deliberately bought an IP6 compliant SDSL router over a year ago, with a separate IP6 configuration suite including IP6 firewall, because I knew that the countdown to IP4 would become saturated soon. I think I'll get familiar with it, and test enabling IP6 WAN to see if my ISP provides native IP6 access yet, and get security, routing, and other mapping set-up.

Re: The question becomes, then...

I will never run windoze not great (8.*) unless required by work, because it is not just a horrible UI; we all know that it is much more insecure to the NSA, by design! So neglecting windoze 7 will cause me to find ways to punish them.

I will only switch from windoze if I run the software I need on the new OS; I currently can't run all of mine in Linux or FreeBSD; I've tried via VirtualBox and Wine, it's not usable despite tweaks,

I've already migrated an old netbook to Mint because of the XP frack up, it works OK, my RAIDs run FreeNAS (FreeBSD based), and if this gets bad enough, my Win 7 PCs will probably migrate to Mint too! Mint is OK, but the VM hosting could be better.

At work we plan to add new Dev servers, and I'll request that the VMs are running Linux to host our servers, except where we need windoze to run microsad servers, because windoze is tired and costs. If this goes well, we may look at selling the idea of customers using Linux servers too, because PostgreSQL could easily replace SQL Server, and Linux would probably be the only workable alternative for windoze XP on old boxes.

microsad are losing it, and will slowly lose it all if they are not careful, because it keeps getting easier to run more stuff not on windows.

Enough with the cloud for personal things!

All these cloud centric IoT (Internet of Things) turds need to get real about personal and system security because the cloud will likely never be fully secure. There needs to be one or more dedicated gateway/firewall nodes which a zoned set of IoT must talk through (no, not an internet gateway/router/firewall) which decides what each of these devices can talk to, and provides encrypted connection tunnels or encrypted data wrappers to secure /all/ data transfers.

All IoT should damned well be able to run with only a local computer and not need to send any data to a cloud server, for any functionality, for any data which may compromise security e.g. that includes /all/ exercise and medical devices, including weight, movement, and cycling computers!

I will never buy any device which requires a remote cloud server for configuration or use, because it is a point access or support failure, and an open security sore; designers who do this should be made to suffer! I tolerate ebook and Android devices because I can use these off-line.

I'd be more worried about all the pharmaceuticals in it if it is 'cleaned' sewage water, and if "Flouride" (mixed industrial waste) is added.

No, it's not just gluing components or services together, you need to know about the stuff you are using, how to make infrastructure too, so you know what it can do, know that your glue may actually be an application itself, so that you know when what is being asked for is stupid, so that you can suggest something which is practical and will actually work for years with rare quick maintenance tweaks, and not suddenly blow up and take ages to fix the original crap design!

Infernoz Bronze badge

Excellent

I've had to try and fix layered cruft (technical debt) code, got fed up, and now spend the time to make readable extensible code; the sooner this is done the better, because old code can be a minefield of nasty subtle bugs, and some major ones too!

It is not just security code which needs to be fixed; I looked at the Sqlite code, in the past, and saw a freaking declare macro mess which would take too long to port to another OS, so a legacy commercial project which I had hoped to patch with it was retired.

I really dislike C code which makes a lot of use of declare macros, when this should be moved behind a *.h interface, with separate *.c or *.cpp files for each OS or other major dependency i.e. factory style code rather than a minefield of switch code!

If all portable devices were water resistant, Garmin etc. would face some serious competition and have to provide better for cheaper e.g. mapping Bicycle GPS is still stupid expensive for a usable package, buggy, and with only a tiny low resolution screen. The smarter watch people are really missing a trick for this, because they could clean up, by not making the strap the only mounting method, adding other sensor channels, and adding extra button shells or cases.

Lambdas meh, Java has always had Threads and Java 5 has concurrency classes

The problem with using concurrent Lambdas is lots of people don't know that concurrency has lots of pitfalls if you have any mutable state and don't know how to manage this; so there will be loads more flaky code from concurrency newbies using Lambdas. There can also be Thread pool starvation issues if you don't know how to get the new APIs to use custom Thread pools.

The cool stuff is not the Lambdas, it is the Stream API, and the other Java language and JVM enhancements; Lambdas just make this easier to use.

Manitol happens to be a Sugar Alcohol (Polyol) used to flush bad bacteria out of diseased cattle; so the extra mass which people dropped was probably most of the digestive flora losing grip on the intestines and just falling out; that and any digesting food is a lot of mass to loose in one go, probably much larger than a normal deposit! A number of Polyols can do this flushing to varying degrees e.g. Xylitol is useful because it stops bacteria sticking to a surface and is hard to digest, which is why it is in some nasal and dental products; this is why you see warnings on most products containing Polyols.
