1. Mobiles are already far too big now, a /lot/ wider than even the widest old land line phone, so ridiculously bulky and unergonomic!

2. The width of the passport would be unusable for pockets, possibly even suit/coat pockets, so require a bag or case to carry it in.

4. I you want a mobile that wide, you may as well use a 7" tablet as a phone, and get even more screen space.

I blacklisted PayPal because the disputes procedure was black comedy, so had to do a credit card chargeback; I couldn't even trust them to forward a credit card payment recently, so I'm frankly astonished that they are still in business!

Why is anyone so stupid as to even think of using air coolers with top end CPUs.

Ready made Corsair water coolers blow away bloated air coolers for cooling, and are not that hard to fit, and can even be cheaper than top end air coolers; they even do them for GPU cards now! I've used an early ready made Corsair water cooler model for years now, with push-pull fans on the radiator.

I'll have to see a lot faster or have my i7 920 24GB machine die before I even consider a new i7, especially at the stupid money for a new Intel CPU, a new mobo, and over 16GB of RAM. AMD are much cheaper, as I know from building beefy FreeNAS boxes.

People should also have a look at the book "Scarcity" by Sendhill Mullainathan & Eldar Sharif, to learn that people with scarcity can develop tunnel vision, so miss important stuff outside the tunnel and build an inflating debt spiral of currency, time, or other scare resources, and even come to a grinding halt e.g. bankruptcy or Divorce.

The basic social contract for governments is the sparingly use of the power /borrowed/ from the people to provide more benefits to the majority of the civilisation than costs, and excessive law, regulation, welfare and spying are pretty damned high on the costs side, so most governments are no longer fit to govern and they know it!

If they haven't: forewarn customers that IP4 addresses will become scarce and priced much than IP6, started increasing IP4 prices, provided a countdown of addresses for each locale to forewarn people, or shouted where the migration resources are.

I deliberately bought an IP6 compliant SDSL router over a year ago, with a separate IP6 configuration suite including IP6 firewall, because I knew that the countdown to IP4 would become saturated soon. I think I'll get familiar with it, and test enabling IP6 WAN to see if my ISP provides native IP6 access yet, and get security, routing, and other mapping set-up.

Enough with the cloud for personal things!

All these cloud centric IoT (Internet of Things) turds need to get real about personal and system security because the cloud will likely never be fully secure. There needs to be one or more dedicated gateway/firewall nodes which a zoned set of IoT must talk through (no, not an internet gateway/router/firewall) which decides what each of these devices can talk to, and provides encrypted connection tunnels or encrypted data wrappers to secure /all/ data transfers.

All IoT should damned well be able to run with only a local computer and not need to send any data to a cloud server, for any functionality, for any data which may compromise security e.g. that includes /all/ exercise and medical devices, including weight, movement, and cycling computers!

I will never buy any device which requires a remote cloud server for configuration or use, because it is a point access or support failure, and an open security sore; designers who do this should be made to suffer! I tolerate ebook and Android devices because I can use these off-line.

Rubbish design cooler if it blocks memory slot + water is better

I only use a heat pipe and fan CPU heatsink when the bundled one for a low power CPU which is hardly stressed e.g. a FreeNAS box, with a much cheaper AMD CPU.

My main PC uses a pre-assembled water cooler with push-pull fans on the radiator and stays much cooler and quieter that the old huge heat pipe cooler I had, and for about the same price!

I won't touch Intel for anything but my main PC, because the CPUs and motherboards are so damned expensive, so it only makes sense for stuff which needs the best processing power.

I have an email rule just to move anything not caught by my Spam filter, and with specific attachment types (especially zip files) to my Trash folder, because 99.9% of them are fakes and exploits, but not to delete them straight away, so that I don't loose a rare valid email.

It's about time all portable devices were made at least water resistant as standard, and I don't mean just the PCB, so that they can be used in a downpour or in humid conditions, and I don't want to have to buy Sony or some stupid waterproof bag for something which should be standard for all portable devices with a built-in power source!

If all portable devices were water resistant, Garmin etc. would face some serious competition and have to provide better for cheaper e.g. mapping Bicycle GPS is still stupid expensive for a usable package, buggy, and with only a tiny low resolution screen. The smarter watch people are really missing a trick for this, because they could clean up, by not making the strap the only mounting method, adding other sensor channels, and adding extra button shells or cases.

Lambdas meh, Java has always had Threads and Java 5 has concurrency classes

The problem with using concurrent Lambdas is lots of people don't know that concurrency has lots of pitfalls if you have any mutable state and don't know how to manage this; so there will be loads more flaky code from concurrency newbies using Lambdas. There can also be Thread pool starvation issues if you don't know how to get the new APIs to use custom Thread pools.

The cool stuff is not the Lambdas, it is the Stream API, and the other Java language and JVM enhancements; Lambdas just make this easier to use.

Ruby and all the other hipster languages,like Scala, are wannabe mainstream languages, but have been discovered to not be usable in anger, so people went back to reliable Java.

What a complete retard

The fastest Wifi is not even close to Gigabit, say 300MBit, the bandwidth of the router will be shared with many users, will run far worse than wired Ethernet, with dire user bandwidth, and be far less reliable. I'm already maxing out Gigabit Ethernet at home for NAS1 to PC to NAS2 file transfers at about 50MByte/s (using Intel NIC cards), let-alone frankly obsolete 100Mbit Ethernet, so only put light use devices on WiFi, and even then, I see occasional persistent connection issues.

I'm really hoping the price of over 1 Gigabit PCIe NICs drops really fast, because they are currently stupid expensive, so I can't upgrade yet from already tired Gigabit Ethernet!

Of course the Elephant in the room for schools, is most don't make proper integrated disruptive use of them, because may are stuck in the old teaching model, so in a lot of cases these computers and support infrastructure are a complete waste of resources.

The book and record shops were largely dinosaur (already hobbled) retail model, so it was easy for Amazon to clean up. Most of my books (especially fiction) are in electronic form now, from Kobo etc. /not/ Amazon (inferior locking), because paper books, and the book shelves to put them on, are far too bulky and heavy.

I refuse to buy any electronic media from Amazon because there is too much lock-in; physical stuff, fine, provided the price is right; but even they can uncompetitive or not have stuff some other retailers sell.

I've seen Hitachis fail click of Death nasty, seen Seagate degrade in RAID 1, so I got WD everything for spinning storage:

1 80GB WB Blue was used for years in a Netbook, now in an IODD; no problems still.

1 250GB WB Blue on 24/7 in a Netbook for 2 to 3 years.

Six 2TB Greens in a ZFS NAS, one died, after over a year, with heavy use, big deal.

Six 3TB Reds in a ZFS NAS, one died in a month, replaced in warranty; no new failures in a year, with much heavier use!

I won't touch anything Hitachi ever again, Seagate showed that they lost the plot, Samsung are not good enough for spinning disks, but I like their SSDs in RAID1.

I expect all disks to fail, both spinning and SSD, so plan accordingly, preferably ZFS based, because you get more redundancy and much earlier warning of a failing disk.
