I need to multitask, but Windows 8's Metro won't let me

dogged

Re: My standard desktop use at work

On a desktop pc, the point of metro is to get people used to metro. It's just a launcher and metro apps are trivial, unimportant things (excepting email, maybe).

It's not any worse than the Start button, just different. It's not any better either.

It is wholly there to sell tablets and phones, in my opinion, but that doesn't make it a bad thing.

On the other hand, the rest of Windows 8 is really very, very good. You'd be a fool to spurn it on the grounds that you don't like using a launcher. On the grounds that Win7 is good enough and upgrading is an unnecessary expense, sure. If you can live without the optimizations and frankly scary speed boost.

It is, as always, entirely your call. But the launcher is an idiotic thing to worry about.

dogged

Re: Simple multitasking

None of those are Metro apps.

Do you have any clue what the topic is?

dogged

Re: My standard desktop use at work

I really do not understand all this blind panic among people who should know better.

Let's spell this out once and for all.

IT'S A LAUNCHER. YOUR DESKTOP IS STILL THERE. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE METRO APPS. YOUR TELEMETRY SYSTEM IS NOT A METRO APP. EXCEL IS NOT A METRO APP. CS5 IS NOT A METRO APP. YOUR WEB BROWSER OF CHOICE IS NOT A METRO APP (unless you chose IE10Metro and why the hell would you?).

UNLESS YOU ARE TOO STUPID TO USE A LAUNCHER, YOU'LL BE FINE.

fucksakes, people. The sky is not falling.

Re: Remember 'Bob'?

Instead of screwing around with the User Interface, how about making Windows secure once and for all.

Probably because it's too hard

That bit is the reason I downvoted you. No. Not "too hard". Try "absolutely impossible on any system to which executable programs can be added", you retard.

dogged

Re: Bogus argument

Are you suggesting that all of MS's server monitoring tools are going to be Metro apps?

The clue in the Task Manager. It most definitely is not a Metro app.

dogged

No, you can use the desktop and have as many as you like.

Bogus argument is bogus.

I don't see why it'd be "always on" when the plan is to use IPTV. There's no recording in that scenario.

My XBox gives me iPlayer, 4OD and skyPlayer (although I never use that). No iTVplayer and I don't think whatever Channel5 have but really, that's not exactly a major loss.

I quite like the YouView idea but it'll have to be pretty damn good to make the XBox redundant.

Get over yourself. Linux on the desktop failed. Wanting something else to fail just to make up for it won't change that.

And, incidentally, I don't remember hordes of Microsoft trolls popping out of the woodwork on every linux/Android/FOSS article to say how shit it it is.

And finally, don't you fucking dare accuse me being paid by MS. I'm not. I work for a living. You and Barry enjoy college while you can.

Re: Question for the Windows Phone executive

The app-yoinking is kind of strange. All of these apps do apparently run (according to WPCentral) but Nokia have pulled them anyway. In the case of Skype, it won't be missed because it sucks to all hell on WP anyway at the moment.

The apps are also still available for the Dell Venue Pro which has similar processor/memory constraints which is telling.

So wait and see, I suppose.

Worst. Reporter. Ever.

Here's what Paul Thurrot has on this -
This week, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was widely reported (including right here in WinInfo) as having said that he expected to see as many as 500 million Windows 8 users by the end of 2013—a fairly impressive feat given that the product will have been on the market about 15 months by that time. Microsoft PR contacted me to explain that he never actually said that, but wasn’t able to provide a video or transcript of his speech, nor tell me exactly what he had said. But the basic gist of it—since, again, no one seems to be able to provide this very basic information—is that Ballmer was simply reiterating a statement the company had made previously in its Windows Store blog, that there would be more than 500 million Windows 7-based PCs ready to upgrade to Windows 8 by the time Windows 8 ships. And the credible Todd Bishop says that Ballmer actually said the following in his speech: "With something like 400 million to 500 million users expected in the next year, the best economic activity for people building machines, and the best economic opportunity for people writing applications, will be around Windows." Point being, Ballmer was talking about Windows generally, not Windows 8 specifically.
Re: outmicrosoft Microsoft

Call me when you find a company that meets this requirement. Google certainly don't.

dogged

Re: @Stoneshop: Microsoft *must* be on dangerous ground messing

That's true. I used to work for Motorola years ago as an RF engineer, designing logic and faultfinding on GSM base stations.

They have a LOT of IP in the field of what you'd call BIOS on a computer and plenty regarding packet-switched network design and implementation, fault diagnostics and network maintenance.

On the software that makes a phone work?

Not so much anymore. They don't even use their own OS these days, or make their own chips. So yeah, Moto have a lot of IP. Almost none of it is relevant against a software company.

dogged

Re: Germany

Because German patent law is brutal and German courts are regarded as sympathetic. It's like suing in Delaware or East Texas.

dogged

You could offer yourself to Motorola as an expert witness in rendering this patent invalid but if nobody mentions your prior art in court, it's as if it never existed.

So basically, if this offends you so much, telling us is just pissing the wind. Contact Motorola.

dogged
Meh

Re: Microsoft *must* be on dangerous ground messing with the big boys when it comes to mobile

Probably not.

Microsoft are a software company, Motorola aren't (and even back to the V. days were renowned for shitty OS implementations, far worse than anything MS have ever inflicted on the world). Even now, Microsoft don't make phones. That means all those hardware patents Motorola stacked up over the years are essentially useless against them.

dogged

Re: MS vs. non-MS

Yeah, google are lovely fluffy bunnies who love everyone, especially YOU. Riiiiiiight...

Motorola have certainly sued over patents though. And this case was brought against Motorola, not Google.

Since IE and Messenger are both baked in, that doesn't happen.

dogged

Re: What is the difference between a smartphone and a featurephone?

It can. YOU can't code it, though.

If you can check email while playing music, multitasking is happening. WP can do that because the music player has native access.

It can multitask. It just doesn't let any old idiot with a copy of Visual C# Express fool around with its nethers. If you feel that makes it less than "smart", that's your decision.

"Extremely long copyright terms"

I'm a little concerned by this "extremely long" descriptor being bandied about.

Suppose you wrote a book. Suppose it was never really huge being a bit visionary but years later, somebody noticed how awesome it was and it got huge. HP Lovecraft is a good example here. However, suppose that unlike Lovecraft, you survived.

If copyright terms were as short as I've seen mooted here, you would quite literally never earn a penny on your creative genius. You would die in poverty (like Lovecraft) while everyone else had a great time reading your book on their Kindle.

Something about this strikes me as really, really not fair.

Is that wrong of me? Does that make me a copyright fascist? It must be horrible to be the one making that kind of call.

@AC -

Your response indicates you think developers are too stupid to use a launcher.

Actually, most responses in this thread seem to be "I am too stupid to use a launcher".

And requiring business software means using the launcher to launch the business software. It's not rocket science, unless you're absolutely retarded.

I can't believe how many people commenting on the Reg forums consider themselves to be stupid and incompetent.
