HP confirms it's back in the smartphone business

What's this? WP8 generates low support costs?

HP will definitely go Android then.

Re: return of the ipaq?

I agree that Android is the most likely choice.

However -

The HP phone will definitely run Android. Anything else would be suicidal. Windows phone marketshare is in freefall

No it isn't, Barry. You want it to be but it's growing like a fungus on the corpse of Blackberry. The latest Kantar results show a continual market share rise at Blackberry's expense.

Re: So, just to make this clear...

You're right, there are vanishingly small chances of any of these not working. Vanishingly small. Multiply those probabilities to get the odds of them all not working at the same time. ooooooooooh, scary. Not.

And you qualified on the second condition by your petty choice of abusive monikers.

So, just to make this clear...

IF you've got SmartScreen turned off AND IF you've changed UAC to allow anything to do anything AND IF you don't have any AV, including Windows Defender THEN a) this might allow somebody to execute some code on your machine and b) you're a massive retard.

Is that about right?

Not really.

Cameras have traditionally been German or Swiss here - with many German makes marketed as Swiss post 1945 for reasons of actually wanting to sell some.

At the low low end, they were American and at the "enthusiast" end, well, a good friend of mine still makes her own pinhole cameras and takes some remarkable pictures.

It's a little cheeky but you could just grab an HP Microserver (around £100 including cashback) a couple of 4GB DIMMS (around £30) and a Technet subscription (£99~ish per year) which gives you everything that isn't labelled "Enterprise Edition" or a dev environment.

Mine charged from USB as soon as Motorola's drivers were installed.

dogged

Re: Some background info & suggestions

There are a lot of differing accounts out there as to what's going on under the flip, as it were.

P2K5 (Pegasus 2005) is variously referred to as an OS or as a bootloader, while the actual meat of the thing is claimed to be either an S60 variant, a proprietary Verizon Symbian - unlikely as mine is GSM and works in the UK - or JUIX, a Motorola-proprietary linux contaminated with Java.

I agree that my chances are low but honestly, it's a form factor that shouldn't be wasted on the horrible crap it runs as stock.

Re: Fuck them.

Maybe it was EA et al pushing this model but it's naive to think Microsoft were facilitating it from the goodness of their hearts. Somewhere along the line they'd be lining their wallets, skimming a % of the transaction required to reactivate the disk.

More likely something along the lines of "if you lock down our games from those filthy gamers, we'll give you longer exclusives".

If MS were taking a commission it'd basically be becoming a digital Gamestation.

Even the most rabid of Sony shills - hi Barry! - couldn't possibly argue Xbox One's phonehome and limitations were about Microsoft's greed.

Nope, those were for Mr EA Games esquire and nobody else. It made no sense for MS - they want to sell consoles. It made all the sense for EA - they want to stop you from owning your games.

Eadon doesn't think. Eadon is Google's Hate Machine™. If it's MS or Apple, Eadon hates it.

If there's an article about a non MS or Apple technology, Eadon will use it to say how much he hates Apple and MS.

If there's an article about a Google technology, Eadon will post that Open Source cures cancer and that WP gives you crabs.

The algorithm is really very simple, and based on their fabulous webcrawling tech.

We should applaud Eadon for the technical achievement that it is, a testament to what can be done when guerrilla-marketers get to order engineers around.

TypeScript 0.9 arrives with new compiler, support for generics

Re: Clearing up misconceptions

Understandable. The article was pure Eadon-bait.

dogged

@Kevin McMurtrie

Kevin,

It'd be lovely if TypeScript used C++ syntax but the requirement that you should be able to drop your existing JavaScript project in and have it work without amendment means that's not really feasible.

On the plus side, it sure beats CoffeeScript.

dogged

Re: Just what the world needs …

For those who don’t yet know it, JavaScript is an advanced, powerful scripting language. Like all languages it has its quirks and foibles. Many of them are addressed in the next version. Microsoft’s approach is, once again, a destructive attempt to hijack the Web

Having you considered checking out what TypeScript actually is before sounding off?

Usage pattern :

1. Take your JavaScript project

2. Drop it into TypeScript

Lo! It runs! (provided it would have run in any other JS environment - TS doesn't magically fix your shitty broken code)

3. Add more code using strongly typed objects, generics, overloading, all the good stuff.

4. Compile your project.

5. Examine the results of the compile to find.... zomg it's all JavaScript! There is no TypeScript in the output! at all! It's completely to standard!

Of course, 3 minutes worth of actually checking what the story was about would have told you that. And one minute of fact-checking would have told the author of the article that, too but clearly neither of you gives a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut about what's actually going on.

dogged

Re: "Typescript" ?

They are still trying to embrace and extend?

No. The compiled output of TypeScript is JavaScript. Of course, the article did its very best to obscure this. TypeScript is Anders Hjelsberg's shot at making life much, much easier for JS developers. It's a dev tool, not an alternative language.
