Labour vows: We'll pause one-dole-to-rule-them-all for drastic fix-up if elected in 2015

Nice idea..

The whole UC idea is technically a good one in that it is supposed to link to HMRC to determine the earnings of a claimant (if any) and adjust benefit payment accordingly such that people are always better off working than not.

The fact that the various civil service departments are completely incoherent in their IT systems is a major issue for the roll out of such a system and is the main thing that should have been sorted prior to the introduction of UC.

How many of you El Reg readers have had letters through from HMRC regarding child tax credits etc and asking you to tell them you and your partners earnings - they have your NI numbers etc, why the hell can't they just look it up??

By having a real-time link between systems (or even better, a single system) then the roll-out of any such link to benefits would be much simpler.

Thumb Up

I tried to stifle my laughter but inadvertently ended up with a load of snot on my keyboard.

(Wiped off prior to type this message I might add.)

Please work for nothing, Mr Dabbs. What can you lose?

I now have a stack of printouts of http://xkcd.com/627/ on my desk to ward off any advances to what seems to have become an unofficial IT helpdesk.

Volvo tries to KILL SHOPPING with to-your-car Roam Delivery

why just cars?

Surely the concept of one time keys and drop off locations would be better applied to a locked box or garage at the home rather than in vehicle which (a) can move around thus create a new game of "give the delivery driver the run around", and (b) is worth a pretty penny more than a locker type thing.

Putting this in a car is pointless, but from Volvo's perspective I suppose they aren't going to branch out into the home and garden product arena.

The right to bear arms

The 2nd amendment that these gun loving nutters hang onto so much only mentions the right to keep and bear arms, it doesn't explicitly state any and all weaponary. I'm sure there are plenty of USA right wing nutters that would love to keep and bear bombs, chemical & biological weapons etc but strangely the US government has banned their ownership by the general public. Surely they can legislate against guns too and just let them keep and bear bladed weapons if they are that keen to keep their 2nd amendment.

popout

Doesn't google know about it's own popout button on the corner of the current compose pane? This takes your current composition or message, opens it in a new window and allows you to mess around with your inbox, search for messages etc.

Why the need for this new, less functional google chat like interface?

Not just for V media customers

My missus just got the £10pm Wildfire by simply calling them and telling them that she wanted a new phone and that T-mobile were offering something solar in-store for a tenner. Her contract wasn't even up 'til September. No other Virgin media products req'd

Why not...

... just recreate the album in digital form - Make a f*ck off big 60min mp3, with no gaps. (is it possible to put timecoded metadata in an mp3?, if so track title problem sorted!)

Personally, I prefer listening to entire albums but none of the iCrap allows you to play one album after another, short of creating a playlist, which is just an arse.

Time to write an CD -> mp3 ripper/combiner.

it won't last long...

once the developers get fed up of coding a nice iOS app, only for it to be rejected they'll just concentrate on developing for Android and/or a nice HTML5 web app.

No doubt, if that happens then Apple would try to nobble Safari so that it blocks access to web-apps that it has decided to put on a blacklist. If they did then I doubt Apple will be around for much longer and all our iCrap will go the way of our Betamax vids.
