Consumers start feeling the love as Chromebook sales surge

more fodder for MS madness

There is little chance than many readers here on TheRegister and other Microsoft supportive media such as ZDNet will accept any truth to this story, even though other reputable and respected Technology Market Research entities publish very similar results stories.

This subtle fact, combined with continuing news of Microsoft poor sales showings with Smartphones and Tablets - by comparison with Apple and Android systems which outpace MS in area of twenty times sales and growth - drives Microsofties into panicked mania, usually resulting in gibberish and non-factual responses and comments in the forums.

reverse attitudes

The Microsoft idiots responding negatively to Yahoo's actions had no problem with Microsoft (totally) ignoring Apple mac OS X, Redhat/Ubuntu Linux and ChromeOS for support of Silverlight, DirectX and Skype - producing completely broken version for Linux until even now.

On any other topic of technology marketshare, Microsofties consider Apple OS X, ChromeOS and Linux of no consideration or worth mention compared to Windows "Desktops". Now that the situation is completely reversed with Windows Mobile suffering badly - and declining - in Marketshare compared to Apple and Android mobile, they are whining like babies.

Get a life, idiots!

Prez Obama backs net neutrality – but can't do anything about it. Thanks, Obama

Obama's Net Neutrality back-pedalling

President Obama is making excuses for actions that he can "legally" and morally take in support of Net Neutrality.

One -The President can tell Wheeler directly that he is strongly “for” Net Neutrality – in unambiguous language - as a principle that advances Internet and technology use in USA.

Secondly, he can inform Mr. Wheeler that he would be fired for any support of the programs advanced by large Internet infrastructure providers for “tiered Pay-for-Play” Internet, as result of undue influence, pressure or financial r numeration, even into the future, when these draconian companies and Mr. Wheeler think everyone has forgotten.

Greed and payola as intricate part of Capitalism are the bane of US society well-being, with the effect that the country is quickly falling behind in many aspects of technology learning and use, particularly in comparison to other G8 or G20 countries.

President Obama cannot afford to be a coward on this issue.

I've got a new Linux box, how does it work... WOAH, only asking :-/

Article writer comments are very misleading, since several of better known and respected Linux distributions - today, October 10th, 2014 - do not require or suggest "dropping to a command line" in order to perform certain functions.

The other rather telling comment is his referencing "playing around" with Linux as an alternative to his dis-satisfaction with Microsoft Windows. Since Linux "is not" Windows, those interested in seriously evaluating this incredible Operating System (OS) need to get help and advice "beforehand", rather than “playing around” and stumbling along ignorantly into a very new computing paradigm, and wasting a great deal of valuable time and energy when so much intuitive and expert assistance is readily available - mostly without any costs or obligations.

Over the past ten plus years, and especially during last 2 - 3 years, I have taught Linux and Free/Open Source Software topics in Greater New York area to those of all levels of technical proficiencies and all ages - up to 80 years of age - with ultimate success.

One key consideration is willingness to learn and not making asinine assumptions about Linux as many in USA, like article writer, frequently do coming from a very limited Microsoft Windows only experience.

It is instructive that the adoption of Linux and FOSS in most other developed nations has been quite noticeably easier and more acceptable to adults and the young, than for most Americans. Maybe basic intellect play a significant part!

Windows Server 2012: Smarter, stronger, frustrating

wanderson

Windows Servr 2012 functionality?

Earlier this year it was reported that Microsoft was attempting to update/replace it's aging and limited NTFS file system with most, if not all of a license of Zettabyte File system owned by Oracle.

No-where in this or any other article written about new Windows 2012 by Microsoft Wow guys has this issue been addressed. More stories about perpetual "point & click" administration Interface that is nothing new on Windows, and "updated" Hyper-V virtualization that in September 2012 remains years behind VMWare and RedHat KVM virtualization are not worth reading for those looking for substantive information on Microsoft "great, improved, New OS".

Continuing propaganda of Gee-Whiz! about anything Microsoft is a waste of time for Theregister and technologists looking for true innovation. Everything said about this new Windows - it's "technical features", has been available from Linux and *BSD for several "years", and providing significant performance, reliability and security advantages over Windows by every metric.

de Icaza misuided

From the moment Miguel de Icaza gained notoriety for his work on Gnome desktop , he has made some very strange (with some contradictory) statements about Linux, Microsoft's "wonderful" and superior Dot.Net and C# language that goes completely against the reality, and intent and advantageous model of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS).

I attributed these to his youth and lack of experience in the real world of business and/or technology politics. Unfortunately all his efforts directed towards compatibility with Microsoft's technologies and the company's benevolence and acceptance of him have failed, and he may be a bit dillusioned at this point.

I sincerely hope he can eventually understand and see a way forward, as it would be sad to witness innovative minds like his go permanently astray.

Analyst says Surface could hurt Ultrabook, Windows 8 tablets

wanderson

Windows 8 Tablet "Expected" sales?

Simon Sharwood speaks of Microsoft 8 Surface Tablet "expected" sales of 4 million as if this is factual and inevitable.

Not in many years has technology reporting been so blatantly biased as to render the article writer an official Microsoft advertising representative (dupe), which is not only devious but demonstrates a lack of clear thinking on the part of someone who is "supposed" to report in a reasonable objective manner.

The Register need to get more competent and credible article authors.

Windows and IE hell for thousands of USA companies

Fortunately for many entities in Europe, South America and South Africa the migration from Windows/IE hell to Linux has been very successful, particularly since the financial savings and significant increase in operational efficiency have been much greater than expected, with considerably less paid than anticipated.

The City of Munich for example moved 15,000 desktops and about 8 thousand servers to Linux in less than two years, with most of the headaches comng from the myriad Windows XP/networking disastrous configurations, not Linux training or user acquired comfort/competence. The Brazilian government has similar successful experiences on an even much greater scale.

I am working with organizations in the Caribbean with similar migration projects - Windows to Linux, which should be even less catastrophic since there was substantially less investment in the very expensive Windows ecosystem over the past ten years.

The greatest benefit to these Linux migrations is the future flexibility and upgrade capabilities - much less the tens of millions of dollards and heart attacks/headaches saved, that will result in even more value. Sort of like preventative medicine - some hard work now with greater rewards later.

Why Windows 8 server is a game-changer

wanderson

Re: Windows Server 8

It is obvious that this commenter and several others are totally ignorant about modern *nix administration, as there are excellent tools sets available for that purpose that are easy to use, unless one has only the "brain dead" mentality of most Microsoft Windows Server admins, who generally only understand software admin developed to the lowest common denominator for intelligent beings.

All these feeble attempts to distract others from facts that Linux and Unix Operating Systems - the better known and quality releases - have always been more flexible, scalable (PC base to Super computer), secure -need we say more, and significantly better ROI than any iteration of Windows server -even when it is Free.

wanderson

Windows Server 8

One thing that article author did not mention is that most of the "Standards based" changes to Windows Server 8 were due to fact that Microsoft does not own these add-on feature technologies and therefore must conform to copyright use on "Open source" functionality added or they could not implement all of the features it wished due to restrictions placed on their software use.

The "Wow" he expressed about the file system is sorely over stated as Microsoft burrowed "what it could" from Oracle ZFS file system, whereas Operating Systems like Solaris and FreeBSD use the full power and flexibility of ZFS.

How second rate is therefore it's grandiose Windows 8 file system.

Almost every thing referenced by author is standard fare for UNIX/Linux for many years. He need to get a life.

Dear Dell and Microsoft: You're not Apple

wanderson

Microsoft, Dell & consumers

I have admired Matt Assay's accomplishments and diverse experience for some time, but think that he fell and hit his head on a rock for this article.

To postulate that Microsoft would even have the expertise, understanding or the technology savvy to produce Internet Explorer and Silverlight specifically for Android and iOS is a stretch, especially since these technologies are not owned or controlled or "designed" like Windows.

Worse yet, they are based on Linux and UNIX, both appauling anathema to Steve Balmer.

Any company as myopic and closed minded - and self-intentioned - as Microsoft would not know where to start supporting anything not invented (or mimicked from somewhere else) in Redmond.

At least he is giving them the benefit of the doubt for possible forward thinking rather than backward reminiscing.

Read-only nation: can Open Source change the British way?

wanderson

IT in UK

As a Brit, it strikes me that the country and most of it's citizens have completely given in to becoming controlled dupes of large - mostly American - corporations in regard use of technology.

Why else would some commenters make inane statement about proprietary applications such as Microsoft Windows being modern when compared to Linux as an ancient relic. True ignorance and stupidity.

This explains why the education systems here would chose to spend tens of millions of Pounds in purchase of US software - like AutoCAD and Microsoft Windows Server, when far superior programs - as Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) are had for pennies or even gratis.

Countries like India, Brazil, China, most of continental Europe and even little Vietnam have swept past us in technology, why we sit reminiscing about the glory days of the British Empire. sic!

Server vendors and the dead hand of commoditisation

wanderson

Server Commoditisation Bad for Innovation

Mr. Mellor overspoke in article about " Windows and Unix were so crap at the job" in regard to server apps multi-tasking, since both Sun Microsystems/Oracle with Solaris Containers and FreeBSD with "Jails" (both UNIX based OS) have very effective multi-applications tasking systems even if not supported by disk I/O improvements of type provided with Virident or Fusion-io.

Therefore, he needs to think before attempting to attach lack of innovation and poor performance of Microsoft Windows technology to others, so as the mute the mediocrity and lack of innovation that emanates from Redmond.

This linking of "misery loves company" syndrome may not be intentional in some instances, but has shown to be carefully planned by many Microsoft dupe reporters in trying to minimize the negative view (and reality) of Microsoft's failures in creative enterprise technology.

Oracle looks for love at Java DevJam

wanderson

Oracle and Java

It seems that article writer Damon Hart-Davis is more concerned about getting latest Java VM for his personal Mac that in-depth reporting on the status of Oracle allowing certification of the Apache Harmony, and pre-maturely concludes that Oracle will "do the right thing" by RedHat, Azul, Apache and everyone else, even while the company closes off prior business arrangements.

How naive and stupid can a tech writer be, when he has witnessed the calamitous moves by Oracle in several areas of technology management, including reneging on official declarations of technology agreements.

These technology journals need to get better qualified, more sensible and intelligent reporters.

Office for Mac steps closer to Windows version of software

wanderson

Office for Mac

What is so incredulous about these "updated Office for Mac" announcements, and even the whole mentality behind Microsoft Office for the Mac is that the Mac using public are and have always been second class citizens with regard to Microsoft software on their platform of choice, and these "one step closed to full acceptance" stances are ridiculous and laughable - but in a sic type of way.

HP, Dell punters furious over Windows 7 upgrade delays

wanderson

Windows 7 non-shipment

It has become tiresome to hear constantly from Microsoft Windows users the whining and complaining - either about the products themselves, and/ or the services of these products from Microsoft's OEM vendors.

If they are so unhappy, dump Microsoft based computers - period!

Oprah Winfrey declared on her TV show some time ago that she will no longer accommodate people complaining and making "excuses" for their bad behavior. The same holds true for Windows users. Get a different Operating system (OS) based computer or get a life - you made the bad choice by selecting such crappy software, so live with it, or go climb in a hole somewhere.
