India to open-source its Co-WIN national vaccination booking platform

happyBoy

Does TheReg have an Anti-India bias?

I observe over the last few years a rather consistent "everything to do with India whether it be a cost efficient indigenous mission to Mars or offering to share Covid related assets with other countries for free" - is treated with gleeful disdain and a undisguised attempt to belittle by some of The Reg authors.

What's the plot? Where is the editorial balance? How about letting the readers decide and save your personal brand of ammo for something truly deserving (our very own PPE scandal perhaps?).

Re: Clean Path...

This is no different from any major node / PoP either being poorly configured or deliberately used for redirecting / copying traffic. Difference in the Physical cable world compared to most other IP based method is almost guaranteed invisibility of any tap being done. BGP et all leave a trail.

Re: Why not clean routers, webcams, 'Smart locks', etc.

Could you please share the brand of this lock as about to get one for some tinkering!

Re: I thought this was more or less known to be the case?

In case someone is interested, I highly recommend "Blind Man's Bluff The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage" for a read on this affair. Pirate, coz - well ships and subs and such with a pinch of skulduggery.

What's holding up the 5G utopia in Britain? Quite a lot, actually

Re: 5G is going to matter

Correct! Also - Hardly any operator has declared (apart from 1 in SE Asia I read about) a full nation wide 5G rollout due to the very same cost/coverage/capacity/backhaul/more site acquisition/RoI issues. OpeX wise - this thing is going to go from bad to worse in the short-term. Till we have mixed mode/G networks in play - due to the change in antennas and kit at the Radio edge becoming more active and complex - the ops requirements are going to start costing more (oops!) - at least till someone has a majorly 5G'ish nw and synergies start taking effect.

However - Standalone 5G is still far away and the 5G uptake will go similar to the 3G to 4G changeover with operators recouping investments/sweating assets on the current/4G as long as possible - spectrum (and Marketing) perhaps being the only carrot/stick driving slightly different behaviour. Mansoor is correct when he talks about the business case simply not being that clear. The other driver as someone else has pointed out is the 'me-too-PR' angle. The more imminent avatar of 5G is the Enterprise / Industrial use cases (IoT based).

This will take a while as far as consumer goes. Theres time for another beer.

Re: A little something about supercomputing architecture from someone in the business.

Don't think anyone is saying 'developers are crap' - rather that the cellBBE was harder to code for rather than the more established x86 based platforms. Which is one reason PS4 is back to an x86 architecture.

Xbmc on ps3 / ps4 - now that would be awesome.

Re: There is one thing you should never do to a harddisk

probably obvious - but nothing prevents you from laying the drive on its side you know :)

happyBoy

My 3TB WD MyBook has a Red drive.

For some reason, after I reset the drive once - I can no longer get the Wd2Go app on my Ipad to work - just wont validate the activation code :( apart from that the only gripe I have is that Apple Time Machine backup seem to get corrupted or something every 2 months (some message from the Mac book about needing to do a fresh backup for improved reliability...).

Works well enough for streaming etc. within the house though.

Great idea..except - what percentage of the 'average consumer' population do you expect to be technically savvy enough to do things like this, all/most of the times?

Texas teen jailed for four months over sarcastic Facebook comment

happyBoy

Would it not have been...

Fairer, more logical and balanced to either caution / warn or do something on similar lines to this kid?

I mean 4 months in Jail and now in seclusion (I understand its for his own safety etc.) - be interesting to see what has caused more lasting damage - a juvenile and rather unpleasant rant on the interwebs versus a solid dose of being treated like a criminal and put in Jail at age 18?

Stop

What does this mean for...

Mobile Phone + Identity theft?

a. Same level of exposure as the current alternative modes of payments (debit, credit etc)?

b. Lesser headaches / a more secure mode and mechanism?

c. Greater risk and perhaps newer types of fraud / ID spoofing?

STOP - as I for one need more info and clarity before this becomes defacto or pervasive enough

Thumb Up

Good show

Sounds very similar to how we were taught computer science when I was in school in India - except, they seem to be starting even earlier in Vietnam :)

If I recall, we did LOGO in 6th or 7th standard followed by BASIC in the next year, next up was PASCAL and ending 11 and 12th standard with C/C++.

Coat

Carriers less than happy then?

If this is a easy enough, economical enough and reliable enough alternative to the current 'I am the operator and would like 80% of the revenue' - guessing the mobile carriers are not going to be too happy about this.
