Microsoft's Bing in travel trouble

Marc-Oliver Kalis
Linux

@ amadeus.net

That is probably, because pretty much every travel-agency that thinks a little bit of itself is connected to Amadeus, since all airlines are connected to Amadeus and most other "travel-media" as in ships, trains etc.

Amadeus is a virtual standard in the travel industry.

It is as essential to have it as a travel agent, as is a SITA link-up for an airport.

Tux - because I like it.

Coren Giles? One should actually feel sorry for him

Being a Kraut myself, I am very much aware what happened in WW II. As a matter of fact my grandfather was a Nazi..... BUT.... only until he realised what happened behind the scenes.

During the actual Holocaust (Reichskristallnacht) he actually helped save many Jews from the SS and the GeStaPo.

I also have polish relatives and one can only marvel, how a renowned publication like The Times can actually have this little uneducated (at least when it comes to WW II and obviously many other things) write as much nonsense as he does.

But specially his completely unqualified and uneducated comment about "Chocky Tax" just shows, what sort of inferiority complex he must have. I suspect, that he actually comes from a sad childhood.

He was always rebellious (and is even proud of it...).

This in itself already shows, that he is nothing but a failure. maybe not in society, but in terms of being an example.

Many of our youth are undisciplined, rebellious (way over board), have a lack of standards (especially moral ones), no self-respect, and just have twisted minds.

It is not really surprising with examples like him!!!

I know I am going to get flamed for some of the comments, but this is what I genuinely believe!

Vodafone offers customers chance to pay for own infrastructure

Happy

great for international consultants!

As was mentioned before:

It's actually a great idea for someone (like myself) who is traveling a lot or is frequently abroad on long term projects.

I am quite certain I am going to get one (providing it works, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there)

I can save massive roaming fees.

As a matter if fact, this thing would be paying for itself within less than two months.

Ok granted, this summer there are no roaming charges, but only if you are logged onto a vodafone network. This way you ensure you always have it available.

School worker's Facebook post prompts suspension

Marc-Oliver Kalis
Pirate

The only one who should be suspended...

and eventually fired is/are the tosser(s) who suspended her in the first place!!!

Ok, I know we don´t have any (or only limited) freedom of speech in the UK, but she has in no way divulged who the culprits actually are.

If my kids where on that school, I would write a formal complaint against whoever suspended her, for really bringing the school into disrepute, since a quiet word on the side would have been far more effective!!!

With formalising this it has been put out in the public and therefore really damaged the reputation, but not because of what a non-qualified teacher said, but what sort of brainless idiots they have who actually went through with a suspension!!!

Cellular repeaters: Can you hear me now?

Marc-Oliver Kalis
Linux

Operators need to keep taps on them

Itś quite simple, eve nthough there is a good coverage, since it only repeats, you can potentially onnect more phones onto a single basestation.

if the repeater is too strong, a multitude of phones will connect to it and thereby reduce the service quality (typical symptom: ¨Network Busy¨.

so I can understand, when there is a reluctance to push out too many repeaters, since it can negatively affect your network

Re: A good but loving hiding is all that is needed (in most cases)!

I have gone through this, and have noticed, that my comment about sterilisation of useles parents has been quoted or at leased refered to a few times.

I just wanted to make clear:

I didn't mean it in the sense of physically sterilising them, what I meant, was the fact, that parent's need to be held more responsible for their childrens actions (as long as the law says they do).

Spleen did mentioned rightfully, that children are not logically and rationally thinking beings! The are children, and as children they have to learn!

They have to learn, that actions have consequences, and if they commit actions that are undesirable, they have to feel the undesirable consequences.

For one child it may be that it gets a good hiding, for the other child it may be that it has to stay in the bathroom or bedroom for 10min, and for yet another you take a way the TV privileges. But they have to be made aware, that they cannot get away with it. Just saying "You naughty child..." doesn't really help matters. it'll stop taking you seriously and loose respect! And that is exactly what is happening: There is no more respect for other children, for grown-ups, for other people belongings etc.

This already starts with the adults: we have way too many single parent families. Why? because we adults are incapable of trying to stick to something and working issues out! I am not saying that all marriages can be saved, or that single parents are bad or not worth it, there are many reasons why marriages break up and I am sure quite a few of them valid!

But children need to have more, than just brought to the nursery, cresh etc in the morning and picked up in the evening. They need time with their parent's and it's up to the parents to provide this! When there are children in the family, one parent should be at home, for and with the children. They are our responsibility!!!

Yes, often our situation doesn't allow us this "luxury" but it is sad, that we have to call it a luxury. this should be the norm!

I am very well aware, that this opinion is not very popular in some cases even hated, especially by the government. Why, because with every mom or dad staying at home, they take in less taxes. and with that less money to squander!

I will probably receive a flame war, but I can only say: our children are our future, and for the sake of my and my families future, I am quite happy to stand on an unpopular opinion.

All the best!

A good but loving hiding is all that is needed (in most cases)!

I blame the parents and our society!

It's very simple: we need:

a) Compulsory Military Service

b) A few more hidings for the foul-mouthed, undisciplined, poorly-mannered brats, that people claim are nothing but a few children with some issues!

I have one child myself (second's on the way) and we do have a very strict regime at home! Don't get me wrong! I love my daughter to bits and dare anyone come near her in a fashion, I don't like!

But, when it comes to foul language, poor behavior, discipline (or lack there of) and just general manners towards others (and I mean children and adults!), we don't have any ifs or buts!

I cannot understand how parents can allow there children to talk rudely to other children or adults and let that go without any consequences!

But I suppose that is our society:

Nobody wants responsibilities!

When my daughter plays up when shopping, I take her either to a quiet corner or to the car and she get's a decent (but NOT HARMFUL!!!!) hiding.

Then I talk to her and ask her if she understands why, and the matter is sorted.

I DO NOT ABUSE HER!!!

But I suppose we have way to many parent's out there, who should have been sterilized before they started scr**ing around and proved how incapable and useless they are in raising their offspring!

And for those morons who claim, that a hiding is no good:

In some cases you may be right, and I do believe and know that there are some children who never required a physical, but I do believe, that the vast majority are still in need!

Best regards

Vast majority here are tossers!

And I mean it just like that!

And in this case I am even willing to publish my name!

How many of you numpties have ever been anywhere in the middle and near east?

how many know or understand anything about the culture there!

just for info: I am a Kraut, or commonly also known as German (just for those who are not quite old enough to know, which seems to be the majority too, since a lot of the £$^%£" written sounds like that of clueless kids!

I have lived in the Saudi, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq amongst others. I have traveled to each and every near and middle eastern country! And I found that the people over there are in generally more friendly, more courteous, and far more accommodating when they see, that you are willing to adjust a little to their customs and traditions.

But when people come across arrogant and self-righteous they are hit hard.

I am not saying that all Europeans are all arrogant bastards (although I personally think many of the are!!!) but the moment something happens over there everybody cries fould, where over here, many people get treated poorly and unfair when they arrive in the country and it doesn't seem to worry anyone.

In many cases, I found the US, Ozz, NZ and Europe fare more oppressive than the Middle East....

And now: feel free to flame me

Software glitch hits Heathrow T4 baggage system

Marc-Oliver Kalis
Thumb Down

BA(A) NO Thank you!!!

I have to say , I have seen so many airports around the world, and no where not even in the African bush, have I come across so much incompetence and inflexibility!!!

BAA claims to be an international business, but they certainly have absolutely no clue of crisis planning!

Being a consultant, I would say that any essential system has to be duplicated as far as possible! What sort of business continuity planning is this, when there is a high possibility, that one system can take down nearly my entire operations!!!

BA could be seen as the equal to incompetence!

I have flown with many airlines throughout my life and have had good as well as bad experience with pretty much every airline!

It just seems to be BA that I have had only poor experience with! considering that they are the largest airline in the world, their service is no better than any budget airline!

How on earth, can you expect passengers to fly "without" luggage on a long haul flight! This just shows, that BA do not take their passengers seriously!

What about the people wanting to go on holliday, and that have their hotels paid for already etc.

Because they can't take their luggage, they have to cancel their holidays??

My goodness, the entire PR team of BA should be fired, as well as the management and replaced with some capable and competent people!

I have flown BA six times end every time it was a disaster! Most business people I know, have on average one negative issue to say about BA per return flight!

I have one return flight per week to Germany. I couldn't handle the stress of flying if I where to fly with them...

Germans demand Nokia return funding

Marc-Oliver Kalis
Alert

Nokia - maybe not as much profit as they thought...

Working in Germany at the moment, I can obviously hear a lot of negative press in Germany about Nokia.

I personally try to stay open minded, but having spoken to some poeple involved, it seems, that Nokia really does have a case to answer.

It might only be a technicality, but at the moment it seems, that it would make Germans feel really good, that one of the subsidy Locusts wouln't get away with it.

I am generally against subsidies, since they are in essence nothing than a bride (I will give you money if you stay and this government looks good, because "we are doing something against unemployment")

That Nokia pretends to be surprised (or possibly is surprised) doesn't surprise me, because they didn't expect that much resistance.

Due to the Siemens / BenQ disaster, Germans are very sensitive to issues like this.

What makes matters even worse, is the fact, that Nokia was making huge profits with this factory in Bochum and Nokia is now working on profit maximisation ("profit at all cost" so to speak) rather than profit optimisation.

So just to squeeze out a few million more (which is not necessarily a lot in terms of profit per share) and some more subsidies, they just close down a plant, which is still very profitable, and holds highly skilled personal.

At them moment there is even research into a German law, which prohibits certain actions, if it is in "bad taste".

This law states that something is not permissible when it appears to go too much against public opinion. For example:

when the borders between east and west Germany opened obviously a lot of people came over. things like bananas where very rare and expesnive in east Germany. Some grocery stores decided to bring the prices for bananas to something like 10-15DM/kg from around .99DM/kg.

Police closed down these shops and most of them were prosecuted for acting in "bad taste" and were fined.

But also the issue with not having employed as many people as they initially promised it's not just ten or twenty, but around 10% less than contractually agreed.

So lets wait and see,

Best regards from Germany

Virgin Media trashes patent infringement accusations

Marc-Oliver Kalis

Patent Trolls

Now the £$^£$"%" yanks are coming over the pond to start the crap here too!

I am no friend of Virgin Media, but for once, I have to say:

hammer them hit them where it hurts!!!

I am all in favour for patents, but not this non-sense, that is nothing but a list of some features!

Absolute NO to software patents!

They do nothing more but hinder further development and purely fill the pockets of some patent troll!!!

Me agroed? My blood just comes to a boil, when I see how everybody seems to think that the crap what we get from the other side of the pond sounds cool, so we have to do it too, even though it's already been proven non-sensical!!!

BTW: @ El Reg: can't you add a shotgun or even better, a fully automatic rifle (maybe something like the German H&K G11 or even the MG3) as an icon, to be used specifically for reports relating to the YOU ES EY?

Head banker leaves job over Muslim gaffe

Marc-Oliver Kalis

WOE? Politcal correctness gone wild?

People are wondering where the islamophobia and the hatred against foreigners comes from...

Well, it's quite obvious.

when people get fired because of a joke like this, it's natural that the anger get's released on one way or another!

I for one, cannot understand how someone can take offense because of something like this...

I am a believing Christian and cannot count the number of jokes I have heard about Jesus and Christianity!

The fact, that the Quran states, that non-believers (non-Muslims) should be killed, should I take offense in that too and have an agro against all Muslims?

What about the jokes against the Irish, the Welsh, the Germans, etc.

What about jokes about cats and dogs, and birds. they might feel offended too...

I know, let's stop telling jokes all together and be a bunch of humorless morons who only complain about the nasty things that everybody else is doing to us.

Sad thing about this is (from my point of view!!!):

As a Christian I believe, that anyone who does not believe that Jesus Christ is our Saviour, will end up in Hell after they die (for those who are curious, have a look at

Revelation 20 ). So it's it makes it even worse, that they want to be miserable in their current life.

BTW: has anyone found the Paris Hilton angle?

Hitler Syndrom

It is disgusting to see, how a great project like Wikipedia is being killed of a by a few paranoid idiots, who just see conspiracy after conspiracy!

I call it the Hitler-Syndrome

The moment you get more power than you can handle, it feels too good to be true and one thinks that everybody is out to get you.

Hitler had exactly this problem! He got too powerful, and then all aof a sudden saw enemies where there were none, which in the end caused him to make decisions, which lead to his downfall (Thank th Lord for that!!!)

Unfortunately he also caused a lot of harm and mayhem through these decisions.

Some of these paranoid admins, are on the virge bringing this great project down!

I personally feel so strong about it, that I think, since Wikipedia is really a community project, every admin that was on this secret mailing list, should be banned for at least 90 days!

ISP blows the whistle on router chip 'fault'

Marc-Oliver Kalis

not faulty Chip, but flawed and useless 'BT'

I think, people don't realise, that it's actually not the chips fault, since it works very successful in millions of other routers, but the extremely poor and rotten BT infrastructure! An infrastructure that is being used to cash in through a quasi monopoly, but that they are not willing to maintain.

Any one who has read the article with just slightly open easy, will recognise the pattern.

In terms of speed the majority of Europe is far ahead of the UK, only where there has been some un-bundling, the line quality is reasonable.

I have tested AR7 routers (AVM Fritz!box, Linksys, Netgear) and non AR7 (Speedtouch) and can really pinpoint, that it is due to the chipset.

That doesn't mean that the chip is the reason.

It is absolutely normal, that equipment form the same manufacturer will communicate significantly better than equipment, that is "just compatible"

It would also not surprise me, if BT deliberately withheld this information, so they can cash in on "unnecessary call-outs".

Interestingly, when you go for BT Broadband, as a normal consumer and opt for a router provided by them ,you will always get one with a Speedtouch chip set.

In itself this may not hold up very much, but it certainly is an interesting coincidence.

Telecel Zimbabwe to lose its licence

Marc-Oliver Kalis

Zimbabwe used to be rich!

when Ian Smith handed over Rhodesia to Rob Mugabe (before he robs you) who then changed it into Zimbabwe, the country had not a penny of debt!!!

I can't remember, when that was the case in the UK, US, Germany...

The country was in a very good state of affairs, even though it was under several years of sanctions.

This real time image of a monkey (no I am not referring to him being black, just his brains) has managed to completely ruin the economy to the point that makes nero look like an angel. just for those who are unaware: Nero created the highest inflation ever recorded (although some say that was in Germany in 1928)

Austrian domain registrar 'aids' phishers

Marc-Oliver Kalis

Also Spamhaus has to stick to the Law!

The way spamhouse is behaving is completely out of line!

I have always regarded them as being quite professional and law-abiding,but it seems, that they have turned into a bunch of cowboys, that are trying to be a law onto themselves, but at the same time trying to avoid taking any responsibility!

This is typical spineless bullying tactics!

There are laws in Austria, and nic.at has to adhere to them!

Spamhaus has absolutely no right in performing this "do what we so, or else..." act.

The have caused so much damaged in the community, it is really sad!

I have followed this pretty much from the beginning, and spamhaus have multiple opportunities to get the domains at least deactivated, but not deleted.

And Steve just gave a "my way or no" and "not good enough" speech.

then finally you can have a look into the various newsgroups and the way he is expressing himself, is completely unprofessional.

He has always claimed to be professional, but when you look at all the evidence, he looks more like a little boy throwing a tantrum, because he doesn't get his way.

I can tell, that by now, there are probably thousands of admins, that will have taken out the spamhaus lists, simply, because they are no longer trustworthy!!!

T-Mobile terminates Truphone

Marc-Oliver Kalis

This is the typical management arrogance

This behaviour is typical for "Deutsche Telekom" which T-Mobile is a subsidery of.

They think, because they have a monopoly in Krautland (I am aloud to say that, since I am one myself) they can bully their way through in other countries too.

Because of the managements stupidity they are currently have big problems because of a massive strike in Germany, which is now starting to affect all areas of their business.

Just because they don't have a mobile network, doesn't mean they don't costs for various of their services.

Who is t-mobile to say what they should charge? after all, they are charging their customers horrendous rates for dialing this number.

Or are they all of a sudden going to charge landline rates to truphone numbers.

This is the only way I could realistically see it being justifiable.

They want to be treated fair? well then they will ahve to pass on the buck and treat their customers fair.

Apart from that, T-mobile should first get their network in order before they make these claims.

The company I currently work for is about to move away from them due to their extremely poor client management and their poor network performance.

BBC culls Jam staff

Industry vs BBC

I am generealy an advocate for the industry, since it does drive a lot, but sofar, I have still to see (whether paid for or free of charge) sometyhing with the quality of the BBC.

I am a German who lives in the UK, so I do like comparing with the status quo in Krautland (I love being politically incorrect :-))

Even though in Germany they have a very similar system and charge even more for TV licences, they do not produce anythiing like this quality. I suppose one of the few things, that the brits do better than the krauts.

I haven't come across any commercial provider that has anywhere near this quality on offer.

If they did, they wouldn't need to complain about it, because people are genereally willing to pay for quality (I am!!!!)
