Comp sci world shock: Bonn boffin proposes P≠NP proof, preps for prestige, plump prize

Re: Current cryptography assumes P≠NP?!

The problem is that if P=NP then we know we just haven't found a good factorization solution yet but that there is one out there. That would kill of public key encryption as we could never trust that the NSA (or any other favourite TLA) hasn't already discovered the clever solution and is easily breaking all encryption.

Hey, Atlantis Computing. What the heck is this in your EULA?

Not unusual

Unfortunately this isn't unusual. I've seen this in the ToC's of many of the online semantic web APIs. They restrict you from publishing any evaluations or comparisons with other systems etc. It's a real pain for doing academic work as reviewers will always ask "how well does your approach compare with <insert well known public API here>" and you just have to say you'd love to tell them but you can't.

Timeout, Time Lords: ICANN says there is only one kind of doctor

In the UK Medical Doctors aren't Real Doctors!

This really makes no sense. At least in the UK most medical doctors don't actually hold a doctorate and so anyone with a PhD is more entitled to call themselves doctor (as I, with a PhD, constantly remind my wife who is a medical doctor but only has a Bachelor of Surgery and Medicine). Also most surgeons drop the Dr title and use Mr and Mrs etc.

I'd say that if ICANN want to enforce a rule then it should be that if societal norms give you the right to use the title doctor then you should be able to register a .doctor domain.

Sorry, chaps! We didn't mean to steamroller legit No-IP users – Microsoft

I don't care what MS says it still isn't working for me. Strangely this morning it was working fine, it only went off sometime after lunch, and yes I've checked that it isn't my end

Thanks ever so much Java, for that biz-wide rootkit infection

Re: Why blame Java at all?

Right, well I guess malicious jar files does suggest java was involved, just a shame that point was missing from the original article, although I see it has now been added.

WTF?

Why blame Java at all?

I've re-read the article twice now and I can't see a good reason to blame Java. The author even states "I have no idea what the initial vector was; the primary delivery mechanism scrubbed itself clean". So if this is true how do you know Java was to blame?

I'm sure there are unpatched security holes in Java but blaming a fully patched java 6 install with no evidence that it was at all to blame is just scare mongering.

Apple's new Safari snubs older Macs, drops Windows version

greenwoodma

Scraping the Windows version is odd

While I never used Safari on Windows as my main browser, I did find it useful to be able to test out web apps I was developing. While I know it uses the same rendering engine as Chrome it seemed to be closer to the Mac experiance than testing in Chrome. Surely I can't have been the only one using it to ensure Mac users got a good browsing experiance. Seems daft for Apple to scrap it if only for this reason.

It's the car behind the ford

It doesn't look as if Google has changed to using Ford cars. If you look closely enough at the photo you will see that the camera is actually mounted on a black car behind the ford. Can't see if it is an Opal but I'd guess so.
