Setting default apps

"> Any link in email or another app therefore opens in Safari, even when Chrome is present.

The Android approach is to present the user a choice every time a relevant link or file is tapped... ie, click a link, and asked which browser to use. Is there any way to set a 'default action' in Android?"

Either click the checkbox for "always use" or click the "always use" or "this time only" button, depending on how old a verzion of Android you're using. IIRC the latter method is valid for ICS and later.

4/1?

"Agreed - 4/1 come late this year? It's not like we've never seen boffins pulling our collective legs before after all..."

What does the 4th of January have to do with anything?

Re: Dear Tim Cook,

Anyone who's been using Apple kit for any length of time knows that you never buy any 1st gen Apple device anyway; you always wait for rev.2 kit.

Re: hope it's true

No need to queue overnight if Ebuyer send them out a week early again like they did with the N7.

One of my favourite games on the Amstrad CPC

I loved this game, although I never managed to complete it.

Yes, I've been playing with it (ooo-err!) for a couple of hours now. It's definitely an improvement over Honeycomb. The stock browser is much better and scrolls nicely without the annoying tiling that the HC browser does. The typing lag in the browser seems to be gone as well. Overall, it's a great update.

To be fair…

…they seem to have been quite good at providing firmware updates for the Blu-ray player I have (BDP-S370) and haven't removed any functionality, instead adding extra IPTV options.

@bob's hamster

"although when my Virgin connection was down last week I couldn't even watch pre-recorded tv"

Actually you can. Rather than pressing "OK on a programme in your recordings (which, as you've found, doesn't work as it can't bring up the info page to play the programme) just highlight the programme and press "Play" and it'll play just fine.

Not hard to figure out.

Other than the 21:9 set the screen sizes of the other models are easy enough to figure out by reading the model numbers.

Probably due to the BD versions being 24fps and the PAL DVDs being 25fps.

Re: Kindle Feedback

Yes I did. Here's the reply I received:

Hello,

Thanks for writing about the Screen saver pictures on Kindle 3.

We're regularly working on improvements to your Kindle experience. I've let the Kindle team know you're interested in loading custom standby pictures to kindle 3 in the future.

Customer feedback like yours helps us continue to improve the service we provide, and we're glad you took time to write to us. The Kindle Team will carefully review your suggestions.

Thanks for your interest in Kindle.

Oops!

Meant to add a second link. This is the thread where the cause of the problem was identified, with pics to show what's happening. See page 8 onwards for pics.

SD picture problems

Going from the posts on the VM forums it seems that the SD upscaling problems are due to TiVo assuming that PAL SD broadcasts are interlaced in the same order as NTSC ones, so the line order is swapped. VM have stated that they're waiting for a firmware update to fix the issue.

We had a couple of iPads at my last job. Most people held it with their fingers curled round the edge. The large border prevents accidental input on the touchscreen.

Composite vs Scart

The problem with using composite is that you don't get any widescreen signalling like you do with Scart so you have to manually tell your TV whether the disc you're playing is 16:9 or 4:3.

So far Safari 5 has behaved impeccably for me. Still haven't decided if it's worth switching permanently from Firefox yet but I'm willing to give it a few more days (mind you, if it hadn't been for the quick appearance of an AdBlock extension I'd be back on Firefox already).
