Yank slams El Reg 'zio-fruitcake' Playmobil 'crap'

peyton?

Odd ending... be careful

This person seems to be in league, somehow, with the Prince of Darkness. I mean "go to Satan" would obviously be a suggestion to the reader. But "Go to, Satan" would be some sort of directive addressed to devil himself (along the lines of "Turn right, Ted" or "Fetch, Fido")

I wonder where it is Tom Lowe is ordering Satan to go?

I saw an interview

Where Shirley MacLaine actually talks about learning how to be stylish, "how to wear Chanel", from Hepburn, when they were together for The Children's Hour. Since it and Breakfast at Tiffany's were released in the same year, I dunno, maybe if she'd been cast for Holly only after working with Hepburn ;)

And don't get me wrong - I think Monroe is great. But I guess it's a bit hard to get past stories of her being helped by an acting coach scene by scene, or to really remember the roles where she's not playing the cliched "Marilyn Monroe" - glamorous and ditzy. Such a shame her career (and perhaps a permanent trend in her roles) didn't continue past The Misfits...

peyton?

ya can't

really quote Capote on his thoughts of the movie version. He could never get over, or see past, them casting Audrey Hepburn in place of his choice, Marilyn Monroe. But Capote said Holly was a portrait of the Manhattan socialites he new. Monroe could never have pulled off the dualism of the role (part hick, part sophisticate) as well as Audrey (or 'Moon River' for that matter) - imo proving Capote would've made the movie suck, and was just a whiny baby when he didn't get his way :p

Part of the problem with the movie (well, aside from Mickey Rooney) is that everyone remembers the happy romantic parts instead of Capote's grittier scenes - but they are there, just a bit more subtle.

OMG US states to ban txting + driving

peyton?

Why a law is not a bad thing

If you get pulled over and ticketed in the US, you can contest it in court. If the charge is just driving "without due care and attention" it is up to each and every individual judge to determine if texting while driving qualifies for that, and then also to determine fitting punishment. A clear-cut law helps eliminate any such ambiguity.

I like how

their child is unique... unlike all those other children out there lol. Didn't realize cloning had caught on.

Someone really should phone up Sweden and let them know that you can be called by something other than what is on your birth certificate. I've had coworkers that would not even tell people their real names before, let alone go by them.

Don't look to the Obama administration

For answers... just tune to Faux News, Rush Limbaugh, etc etc... Not a matter of people fearing they'll lose the right to bear arms so much as people that are just all stirred up by their chosen media (and secretly loving it too, I think).

Funny to hear them prattle on and on about how the country is suddenly changed/doomed/yadayada. I truly believe The Gilded Age by Mark Twain (and some other guy) should be required reading here. In spite of being published in the 1870s, it describes contemporary American politics perfectly. Nothing really changes, except what people remember...

Probably not - the FCC has tried to fine over "fleeting expletives" before and the courts have ruled against them. So long as it's obviously an accident (and the co-anchors face seems to confirm that ;) it's not a big issue.

Windows plays virtualization catch up with Linux

peyton?
Thumb Up

@JohnG

There's the human factor. No sysadmin wants to partake in developer squabbles. Dev A: "we have to upgrade - I need new feature X" Dev B: "no no - that's the version where they remove all the deprecated methods I'm using - we can't upgrade!" Just give them their own server and everybody's happy.

VMware has some nifty downtime mitigation tools. If you need to upgrade a hardware component, or replace a server, you can "vmotion" your virtual machines to another VMware server with no downtime.

There's other features too - the popularity of virtualization is definitely due to more than just people being suckers for marketing.

1)Was responding to primarily to your claim that we're all getting are teeth crowned 2)You don't have to use whitening toothpastes forever and always 3)googled around - couldn't find a single study to support the claim against the toothpastes anyway... gels/strips are another story 4)no one said we perceive white teeth as healthy... we also tan the hell out of ourselves, smoke, binge drink... lots of stuff 'cos we want, not 'cos it's healthy.

some cultural insights

For the unenlightened, there's a wiki for "meth mouth" (don't go there if you're eating...). The reasons so many people (probably Americans) have labeled this guy a "meth mouth" are a)well obviously his teeth, but b)Meth production (and addiction) is associated with low-income types as it is relatively easy to produce with OTC ingredients. It is associated with "rural hick" stereotypes because it requires that your neighbors not live too close, since the production area smells tremendously awful. This is not a Hollywood party drug. I should add, I know this mostly from watching the news, *not* personal experience lol.

Couple other comments: @Cazzo Enorme: No we don't. Hollywood celebs? Maybe. Believe it or not, they represent a minority. Go to the toothpaste aisle of any store here and you will find a plethora of whitening toothpastes. Does that make us vain? Perhaps, but you have to brush your teeth anyway, don'tcha? Why not de-stain while your cleaning?

I also find it unlikely that, even if he isn't a drug addict, the deplorable condition of his teeth is no fault of his own.

Brown apologises for 'appalling' treatment of Turing

peyton?

I hadn't considered before

"...and has drawn a line separating us from a nasty, nasty part of our past..."

I've always had a bit of trouble appreciating such apologies, but had never really considered posterity. As current events get compressed and blurred together with the passage of time, it'll probably provide a sort of waypoint of past outlooks and thought. More so, I think, than gradual changes to laws, etc... and certainly more so than just saying "we apologize for every bad thing we did to anybody ever" (which some comments seem to indicate is what is needed. If people think Brown's apology sounded insincere...)

GTA maker coughs up $20m for 'hot coffee' sex

peyton?

I don't get the confusion

Parents buy their 12 year old a game.

Game hack makes the news, which now brings to the parents' attention that the game is full of sex and violence.

Parents are suddenly embarrassed that their crappy parenting has been brought to light and seek vengeance to redirect blame and assuage their culpability.

For the 'silly Americans' posts, much of the fallout was due to the rating the game was released under, and how they would have to re-rate it 18+. It had *already* received an 18+ rating from the BBFC who, like their American counterparts, do in fact consider sexual content when making their decision.

NZ woman sacked for SHOUTY EMAILS

peyton?

It's not 'supposed to be convention'

It *is* convention. Just like a certain finger extended above the rest is considered rude - along with a million other gestures. Just like phrasing your speech in a condescending or sarcastic manner is considered rude. Just like shouting is considered rude. Shouting rude? No, I was just elevating my voice to make certain you could hear me, right?

Yes, if you disregard convention, none of the above make much sense. And yes, it is context based. So, no, shouting to someone who is hard of hearing does not denote anger. If I put LMAO in an email, no one thinks I'm shouting or being condescending. Reminder emails in all-caps, for most (and this could be a generational thing), have a different connotation.

peyton?

@never quite got this shouting thing

"Text in capitals is a bit of a pain to read, admittedly, but I'm at a loss to understand why people get so upset."

If you only think about all-caps as lower case + 32, then sure, it's nothing. To most of us, it's discourteous, impolite, and unprofessional. Does that make better sense?

"Lord only knows what these fragile types would do if someone really did shout at them."

Often, that's part of the issue - these people would not behave this way in person - making their actions cowardly, which many people would also find irksome.

peyton?

There's a reason not to warn

Sounds like the kind of person no one liked in the first place, and they were just waiting for any excuse to get rid of her. Better luck next time (no, I'm not a fan of shouty emails)

Celebs join call for official Turing apology

peyton?

I usually agree that...

Posthumous apologies are too little, too late, and certainly don't benefit the people that are "receiving" the apology. But I will say, I was completely unaware of his treatment/suicide before all this came up - so it has had some real benefit, even if the apology never comes.

Though arguably just as useless in any sort of tangible sense, I actually like the idea of a remembrance through a knighthood or bank note.
