No new copters for Afghanistan troops

Habit of crashing though....

Lewis,

I do enjoy your columns but I have to question you comment that 'some fail to get airborne at all' not true mate, heli's have a ceiling that requires air density so they do struggle at altitude, but to say they (I assume you mean smaller aircraft such as a Lynx) can't get airborne in Afghan is false. They can, but are limited in where they can go.

As for the Chinook, bloody terrifying aircraft, when I was in the mob, all 12 years of it, I was lucky enough to enjoy a crash landing and a forced landing into a Bosnian minefield in that piece of shit. Both mechanical failure, I would rather bloody walk.

No more Eurofighters for RAF, despite 232-jet pact

Not so. During Desert Storm or 'Op Granby' as we called it, the US air force carried out night missions due to the superiority of their navigation/targeting kit on F16/F18s, nothing to do with 'bravery'. Tornado was an obsolete piece of junk and was committed to daytime missions to a), achieve something, and b), show our participation.

By the way, if you consider conducting nighttime bombing cowardly, tell that to RAF bomber crews from 43-45.... And ask similar Yank crews how much fun daytime missions were.
