I do enjoy your columns but I have to question you comment that 'some fail to get airborne at all' not true mate, heli's have a ceiling that requires air density so they do struggle at altitude, but to say they (I assume you mean smaller aircraft such as a Lynx) can't get airborne in Afghan is false. They can, but are limited in where they can go.
As for the Chinook, bloody terrifying aircraft, when I was in the mob, all 12 years of it, I was lucky enough to enjoy a crash landing and a forced landing into a Bosnian minefield in that piece of shit. Both mechanical failure, I would rather bloody walk.
