Microsoft puts a figure on open source 'patent infringements'

Chris

Title

"If Microsoft knows of exact patent violations, doesn't it have to bring them to court right away, as soon as it believes that it's IP is threatened?"

No. Microsoft doesn't have to do anything. But if they sue, they would of course have to inform the jury of the specific patent violations they believe to have occurred.

Patents do not need to be defended.

"Patent law in the U.S. requires you to enforce your patent or you lose it., period."

That's false. Patents simply expire at the end of their term or if the owner fails to pay the required fees. Other than paying the fee, no other action is required of the owner.
