Gloomy forecast, job cuts, product delays at RIM

Gil Grissum

Ex Blackberry user....

My first and only experience with the Blackberry was the Curve 8310. The user experience was the worst I've ever had with any smartphone. The apps were ok, but the web browser didn't cut it and the inability to play any sort of media (music, videos, no Flash) sealed it for me. I'm not interested in any of RIM's products, least of all, the Playbook.

Kill off PC gaming??

PC Gaming isn't going anywhere. There are plenty of PC games on Steam that a lot of people including myself play. Microsoft still has "Games for Windows" and even if they didn't, my favorite games are ONLY available on the PC anyway (Racing SIMS- GTR EVO/RACE ON/GT POWER and GTR2). Think Alienware is going out of business anytime soon? Not going to happen. Long live PC Gaming!!

Apple pilfers rips off student's rejected iPhone app

Hmmm.

If he didn't trademark his idea, then he was either naive or an idiot. If Microsoft had done this, everyone would be calling for them to be sued. Apple does it and what, it's ok? He should sue the pants off them and get them to "settle out of court".

Get rid of Balmer

Balmer is the problem. Get rid of him and things will change. Keep him at the top and Microsoft's steady decline will increase in speed. Maybe they're so behind in mobile for this reason- build no products, wait for someone else to build it, then sue for IP infringement. Shocked that Microsoft hasn't sued Apple and other Tablet makers. Maybe they are waiting for someone else to build a tablet that competes with the iPad.

Apple sues teenager for white iPhone conversion kits

Suing a kid?

Having the Police raid a journalists home as if they were your private security force is one thing, but suing a kid (and his parents) for buying parts from their supplier and then selling them on the web? And hang on, Apple couldn't produce a white iPhone 4 while Foxxcon apparently had the parts to do so, and this kid pretty much outed Apple as having the capability to produce a white iPhone 4 but didn't?

Even if you do allow Flash on your Jesus phone, I will not be buying one.

Think PCs will drop in price? Think again, warns Intel

Gil Grissum
Devil

Squeezed

Intel can try the strategy of raising prices to increase profits, but that won't work. People who want to pay more money for a computer don't buy PC's. They buy Macs and Macbooks (PRO). As evidenced by the Netbook phenomenon as well as the "fondle slab" phenom iPad/iPad 2, consumers aren't impressed with high tech specs enough to want to spend more money on PC's. Many aren't going to replace their PC with a new and more expensive model, in the current worldwide economy. Last year, I built myself a new Tower and it wasn't the latest, greatest intel Kit. It is a Core 2 Duo 2.3GHZ running two 9800GTs in SLI. It gets the job done for gaming, work, and content consumption. What did this beast cost me to build? $400. LESS THAN THE PRICE OF AN IPAD2. I refuse to buy overpriced PC kit just to make Intel rich. I suspect many feel the same way. If I want to spend more money on computers, I'll buy a Mac.

Ballmer: Time up for 'stuck in the past' Microsoft CEO?

Gil Grissum
Gates Horns

Fruitcake for lunch?

Balmer is a clueless fruitcake. His Long term strategy? Let's start with the disaster that was "Windows Millennium". Windows 2000 was fine, followed by Windows XP, which we had to live with until the disaster that was Vista in 2007. Windows 7 was what Vista should've been. Now what? Windows 8 on Arm? Where is the long term strategy for the smart phone and tablets? Too little/too late? Microsoft didn't like the Netbook market because everyone started buying them with XP on them, so they put a crippled Windows 7 on them to basically kill that market.

And yes, investors generally only care about short term profits and stock price increases, but this investor (as well as others) are right about Balmer's leadership. The only thing he got right in his 11 years at the helm, is the X-Box 360. Is that even profitable yet? So now he wants to drop 8.5bn on an unprofitable web telco, under the assumption of making long term profits? From who? Skype isn't profitable with Microsoft in charge. Who really thinks they will be with Microsoft in charge, especially considering that Balmer will surely ruin Skype by re-branding it with some Microsoft branding (which will surely ruin the product).

Balmer has got to go. He's failed and if he's permitted to do this Skype deal, that will prove to be his biggest failure to date.

Gil Grissum
Grenade

Schmidt?

Maybe Microsoft should steal Schmidt from Google? He was after all CTO at Sun, CEO of Novell, and was CEO of Google. He'd be a fine choice to replace the bombastic joke that Balmer is. Balmer has failed at this for ten years and because he is behind the times, the company he runs is behind the times. Oust him now before he makes the situation worse for his company. Mac adoption is still on the rise and Microsoft doesn't have an answer for the Tablet market. By the time they come up with one under Balmer, they'll be further behind in that market than they are in Smart Phones.

Google Chromebook: Will the revolution be subscribed?

Not for me

This reminds me of the dumb Vax terminals I replaced with PC's at Cigna and the SUN Java station "network computers" that were suppose to eliminate desktop computers and help SUN sell the big servers back in the late 90's. Years later now we have Google trying to usher in the golden age of limited computing on cloud based devices? The only limited use computing devices gaining any traction these days is tablets and even they have local storage, local apps, and full functionality when not connected to the Internet. Good luck with this Google. You aren't going to sway many Windows users and Apple users are probably already laughing at this. The Asus Transformer makes a mocker of these Chrome OS toys.

Stampede towards Chromebooks? I don't think so

I'm all for Linux, but a browser based OS with no local storage and offline usage ability for the same price as a fully featured Windows notebook? Even smart phones and tablets have local storage and local app usage abilities offline. They'd better knock the price down a bit lower if they expect people to be interested in this. And we're supposed to pay a subscription for updates? I don't think so. Who is going to pay an update fee for their chrome book when they don't have to for a smart phone or tablet? No thanks Google. You can have your Chrome book. I'm not giving up control of local file storage and apps usage. No cloud for me, thanks.

New York vows review of AT&T deal

Good

It's good to see the FCC as well as the Attorney General of the state of NY looking at this thoroughly. It's a bad deal for consumers and a great deal for AT&T and Deutsche Telecom. Steve Jobs vindicated: Google Android is not open

Gil Grissum
Terminator

Hmmm...

Does the GPL state when anyone has to release a Linux based OS as open source? Is there a time limit on that? If not, in theory, if Google says they aren't ready to release the source code "yet", then they aren't violating the GPL, as long as they haven't stated clearly that they will NEVER release the source code for Honeycomb. Besides, by the time they've finished Honeycomb (all year), won't it be time for Ice Cream? I could care less when or if Google releases the source code to an OS I'm not using no devices I'm not buying. I'm more interested in when Gingerbread will come to my EVO. This whole situation does point out the obvious- that Honeycomb is a beta, isn't finished, needs work, and that all of you Xoom owners are beta testers. This makes comments others have made about Android appearing to be "unfinished" and "buggy", to have credibility. Every now and then something strange happens on my EVO with Froyo. I hope Gingerbread is more consistent.

HP Palm tablet specs outed

Too little, too late

The iPad 2, Motorola Xoom, Blackberry Playbook, and other more relevant tablets will be out long before this also ran. Most folks just don't care about Web OS any more. And the fact that HP isn't leaking any smartphone info leads one to believe that there is none in the pipeline, meaning that the last couple of WebOS fanboys left on Palm Pre variants, are likely to bounce to Android sooner rather than later.

H.264?

I have yet to come across a site that is H.264 for video but many sites that I actually frequent use Flash, and I can go to them either on my PC, Laptop, or HTC EVO. I don't see a problem with Google dropping H.264 support in their browser when their browser supports Flash and Flash supports H.264. It's not like you're losing support for H.264 at all. It's just going through Flash to show you video that supports it. Where is the negative in that, unless you're an iPhone and iPad user. Chrome doesn't run on those platforms anyway. I see no loss here for the public. If you love H.264 that much, use I.E. or Safari and move on. Nothing to see here.

Verizon to sell iPhone 4 this month

Gil Grissum
Grenade

Verizon is a CDMA network, not GSM (SIM). 4G LTE doesn't use GSM

A) Verizon's network technology is CDMA, not GSM, so there are no Verizon SIM cards in use in the United States.

2) Only the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro have SIM card slots. They do not work with USA based SIM cards. They use CDMA in the USA and GSM SIM cards in Europe.

It follows then that IF Verizon does in fact announce an iPhone on their network, it will certainly be CDMA and not 4G LTE, as they just released that technology and all of the new 4GLTE phones they announced for it, are powered by Android. It is highly unlikely that Apple worked on a 4GLTE iPhone for Verizon. Even if they had, it wouldn't use GSM technology or a SIM card. Know your facts before you post.

No problem with Adobe products here.

Flash 10.1 is neither buggy nor slow on my HTC EVO 4G. Then again, I don't root or mess with my phone. I just use the apps and functions I need and don't tamper with it. Flash runs fine on both my Core 2 Duo desktop as well as as my four year old Panasonic Toughbook, but then I run my systems lean and mean without bloat. CS 5 runs great on my desktop too. No problems there.

Those of you who are having problems running Adobe software, might want to call Geek Squad and get some tech support. I don't need any.

Apple iPad vs... the rest

Gil Grissum
Grenade

I have a tablet. It's called an EVO 4G

I paid $200 for my EVO 4G and I can do more with that than I can do with either an iPad or a Galaxy Tab. The Galaxy Tab doesn't look that much bigger than my EVO. Flash works great and I can actual download and view Mpeg 4 and WMV video clips. Oh, and since I have unlimited voice and data, I'm not paying for an extra data plan unlike others who have a cell and a 3G Tablet.

Tabs are toys for the idle rich. I can do more with a large screen smart phone that costs less than half of these tablets. Less money/more value.

App Store II: Steve Jobs sucks Mac's soul

Gil Grissum
Jobs Horns

Hmm?

Many are assuming that Steve is just opening a consumer app store and is not and would never consider closing the Mac platform from outside pro apps. He's already done it with the iPhone/iPod/iPad. He's already indicated how Lion will incorporate features of the iPhone OS. In the future, it's not a stretch to lock the hardware and OS down to only app store approved apps. It's a telling sign that an Apple Pro app insider indicates that they are de-emphasizing the pro apps division re-distributing "resources" (nice way of saying- "staff") to consumer divisions. Steve can't have been happy about it when certain professional app companies (ADOBE) made their apps cross platform). Could that be the REAL reason behind banning Flash on iPhone/iPad/iPod? If so, he'll likely attempt that on the Mac's in the future. Do you think everyone who owns a Mac will allow Steve to dictate to them what software they can install and use on their Macs? This is why I'm not giving up my Powerbook G4. It's not the latest kit, but it's from a time where we still had choices in software.

Microsoft vision chief sees world without Microsoft PCs

Gil Grissum
Grenade

Balmer is the problem

All of this crap started when the MBA/none techy BALMER became CEO. There has been a lack of vision since Gates stepped down. The shareholders should be howling for Balmer's head and insisting that Gates take over. It worked for Apple (Jobs return). It would work for Microsoft. Granted, Gates would have to give up his obsession with a PC centric technical world. The marketplace and sales stats on Apple and Android vendors, shows that there are enough compelling products that aren't PC's. Microsoft is dead in the mobile space. Windows Phone 7 could be a step in the right direction if they change the name of it and convince developers to port or write new apps for it but running Windows 7 on an HP Slate that has a Netbook Processor and a price of $799 when a Netbook with a larger screen and full Keyboard with the same Windows 7 Starter Edition, isn't compelling at all. In fact, instead of Starter Edition, they need to just put Windows 7 Home Premium on the thing and call it a day, but they won't.

Get rid of Balmer and if Gates can't be saved from his PC trance, find someone else who gets that the mobile form factor is where the real growth is, long term.

HP whips out iPad challenger Windows 7 fondle-slab

Gil Grissum
Grenade

There is no business case for them...

Accept for high paid execs to do a "look at me" when they whip it out and do some mundane task that doesn't impress me. The mere fact that they have been around in Windows form forever at too high a price and took off like a rocket when Apple released one in it's content consumption/flashless form, show that the people that are buying them are either idol rich, Apple fanbois, or some of both. No expansion, HDMI ports, USB ports, Flash, or business apps, make it a toy for people with more money than sense. Apple sells hobbled toys to mass numbers of blind, coolaid drinking idiots who defend their fearless leader while bent over with pants around ankles. No thanks.

Phone 7: Another Vista or another XP?

Gil Grissum

Missing bits

Why remove the bits from Windows Mobile 6.5 that worked, and placed Apple-like restrictions that make WP7 behind the times? No SD card slots? No Native apps that aren't Microsoft or partners, running in the background? And what's with the Facebook obsession to the exclusion of other social networks (Myspace, Linked IN, etc)? The tiles are ugly. Who did they do Usability testing with? And no Flash Support, while Android and soon, Web OS will have Flash support? Someone said it right- Copied all the bad bits from Apple and none of the good bits from anyone. I won't be standing in any line to get one of these. Looks like I'll be sticking with my Pre Plus for a while.

Jobs' Lion to marry Mac OS X and iOS

Gil Grissum

Convergence

Convergence around duo core Atoms or their own in house built dual core arm chips isn't out of the question. They're already doing it with the iPhone and iPad. Seems inevitable that they will do it with the Macbooks, but the Mac Pros will definitely need the horsepower of desktop class chips for some time, due to Intel's iCore CPU's. But if Intel can figure out a way to make their Atoms more powerful while using less power, who knows?

It's also a natural progression to converge iOS with OSX since they are already related. That would also make porting apps between them all, very easy.

Obviously, they aren't impressed with Windows Phone 7. We'll just have to wait and see.

Some existing AT&T customers might not jump ship, but those who did and were disappointed by the combination of customer service and network performance, will surely bounce if and when the opportunity presents itself.

Ballmer goes to LSE as internal doc calls for radical overhaul of MS

Get Balmer out of there

Balmer is a text book case of why you do not want n MBA running a technology company. I was working fine with Bill at the helm because he's a Tech at heart. A Programmer. That's the kind of leader Microsoft needs. Not an MBA who does not have the vision, wisdom, or common sense to run the company. Microsoft has sucked since Balmer took the helm. He's got a list of failures, thanks to his lack of insite:

Windows Vista; He laughed at the iPhone, now it's the top smartphone. He's laughing at Google and Android is on it's way to surrounding and overtaking Apple. What ever happend to .NET?

Balmer is a joke. Bill or the board or a combo of the two, need to pull Balmer out of there. Apple yanked Gilbert Amilio and brought Steve Jobs back. Look what it did for Apple. Bill needs to come back and fix what Balmer has broken.
